New Supenaam speedboat landing to be completed in December Ongoing works at the Supenaam speedboat landing.

The temporary landing being occupied by speed boat operators The construction of a new and modernized speedboat landing at Good Hope, Essequibo Coast, is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. This information was yesterday revealed by the deputy chairman of the Good Hope/ Pomona Neighbourhood

Democratic Council [NDC], Arnold Adams. The revetment of the Supenaam Water front had commenced some two weeks ago, and has since made steady progress. Adams, who is also a member of the Regional Democratic Council [RDC], believes that the

project is going according to plan, and should be concluded by the end of December this year. Arnold revealed to this publication that the 34$ million project will include designated stands for vending, along with seating accommodation for

passengers. He also noted that a special ramp will be constructed for persons with special disabilities, along with a parking lot for general purpose. As construction of the revetment continues, Adams stressed that safety is of top priority to the contractor and his crew at this moment. In an effort to maintain safety, Arnold said that the NDC has temporarily relocated stallholders to a wharf west of the construction site. Adams added, “In the meantime, vendors were relocated to the vendors’

wharf on the Supenaam Waterfront. The speed boat operation site was also relocated and so to avoid the congestion we continue to implement the turn system so that only one boat will occupy the wharf. “When they discharge they pull out and another pulls in.” This publication understands that taxi drivers were also located in an area safe for business. It is believed that the construction of the new wharf is one which will tremendously boost tourism

in the small, but rich agricultural region. Residents, on the other hand, have already expressed their excitement of having this new project implemented in their community. In the meantime, the RDC has since set up a work committee to overlook the construction of the wharf. According to Adams the committee consists of the Regional Vice Chairman, Nandranie Coonjah, and representatives from the region’s Tourism Association and the Essequibo Chamber of Commerce. Then they engage in language that the party does not sanction. They are not members, but they claim to be supporters of the party.” Pleading with supporters, he said, “If you are supporting our party, please stay away from that. That has no place in our country or in our

party.” The leader of the Opposition admitted that his party has been passive to racist sentiments by party supporters. “Too often, we just take these things sitting down and we don’t take firm action on this.” He continued, “I want to say particularly to supporters of the PPP that we must respect.
