The West Demerara Football Association leg of the GFF/KFC U20 Independence Cup KO tournament kicked off on Saturday afternoon with two matches at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground. Pouderoyen Football Club and Uitvlugt Warriors were the teams registering wins, the former recording a huge 7-0 win over Stewartville, while the latter got past Crane FC by a 3-2 margin. Pouderoyen, while there was one each for Donte McAulay (27th), Stefon Jupiter (48th) and EJ Marks in the 59th minute. Andre Heywood netted in the first minute of their clash with Crane thanks to Andre Heywood but Crane responded in like manner on nine minutes through an Alex Ward goal. Kendall Ruel restored Uitvlugt’s advantage in the 40th minute but again, Crane evened things up on the stroke of half time through a Keron Innis effort.

The second half was all to play for and as it turned out Uitvlugt Warriors again went ahead but this time, Crane were not able to respond which meant that Uitvlugt walked away winners of the clash. J. Senson netted the winner in the 65th minute. Play will continue today at the same venue when Eagles will take on De Kenderen from 14:00hrs followed by a clash between Den Amstel and Beavers FC. Stewartville drew the bye to the next round as only nine (9) clubs are contesting.

Gayle back home with Tallawahs KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica Tallawahs will once again have the services of Chris Gayle for this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The 39-year-old Gayle who represented St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the last two editions of the CPL has been selected as the Tallawahs’ marquee player. The big-hitting opening batsman previously led the Tallawahs to two titles in 2013 and 2016. “We are delighted to have Chris playing for his home team for the 2019 season,” Tallawahs’ chief executive officer Jefferson Miller said in a release. “There is no bigger name in Twenty20

cricket and we can’t wait for him to arrive and make the Jamaican fans proud. We are looking forward to Chris being a big part of our push for a third CPL title.” Gayle is the leading run-scorer in CPL with a tally of 2111 runs and has three centuries in the league, all for Tallawahs. They will be playing five home games at Sabina Park once the tournament starts on September 4. He will be also be playing in the World Cup, after which he is expected to retire from ODIs. Gayle was in tremendous form in this year’s Indian Premier League for the Kings XI Punjab where he scored 462 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 158.76 and average of 42, with four half-centuries.

Whiddon Antigua of Running Braves won the boys’ under-17 800m yesterday.

of 37.18m in the girls’ under-18 Javelin. The 800m event wasn’t short of entertainment; Daniel Melville (PPYC) won the boys’ under-20 category in 1minute 59 seconds ahead of Jevon Harris of RBAC. In the men’s open invitational, Devaun Barrington of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) club ran a decent 1minute 53 seconds ahead of Anfernee Headecker, who was overtaken in the final 80meters of the race that was livened up by a pacy rabbit. Following the race, Barrington noted that he has a lot of work to do since his winning time was only good enough for fifth place at the last Carifta Games. National record holder in the men’s Javelin, Leslain Baird, as expected, comfortably won his event with a best throw of 69.02 meters in the men’s open invitational. Head of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson, noted satisfaction with the event and explained that the association will now look forward to the South American Senior Championships which will be held in Lima, Peru, where the likes of Devaun Barrington and Akeem Stewart are set to compete.
