Gainda confident of Tropical Spring-Guyana chances in NYSCL Independence Cup Tropical Spring prior to one of their matches in the Orlando Cup in March.

Captain of the Tropical Spring-Guyana Masters team, Lalta Gainda, expressed confidence of his team doing well in the u p c o m i n g N e w Yo r k Softball Cricket League (NYSCL) twelfth annual Independence Cup which is slated for June 29 - July 1 at Roy Wilkins Park. Tropical Spring-Guyana is the third Guyanese Masters team that will be playing in the tournament with Regal Masters and defending champions Floodlight being the other t w o . The team, which will compete in the Over-45 category, is on their second overseas outing with their first being the Orlando Cup which was held in March of this year. Speaking with Kaieteur sport, Gainda said his team is a well balanced one and he is confident of qualifying for the final four. “We didn’t make it to the semi finals of the Orlando Cup in March, but our players have gained a lot from the competition and will be looking to capitalize this time around,” he added. The skipper stated that his team has a number of experienced players who have played in numerous

tournaments overseas so they know the conditions and will be looking to make an impact. “Apart from playing in the Orlando Cup in March, we have some players who have played in tournaments in USA and Canada so they know what to e x p e c t . ” He expects stiff challenge from Regal Masters and Floodlights but cautioned about taking other teams for granted. “We have to play as a unit, take it step by step and stick to the game plan,” stated Gainda. The tournament will also be played in the Over-40 and All stars divisions. Tropical Spring- Guyana is being sponsored by Cricket Zone USA, Bargain Supermarket, Gain Mart, Rubis Bel Air, Incum Investment Ink and Quality Auto Works. DCC Youth Camp geared at indentifying talent By Zaheer Mohamed With the aim of unearthing new talent, the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) yesterday launched a ten-day youth programme which is set for August at the Queenstown venue dubbed the ‘Home of the Legends’. The camp will cater for male and female cricketers under the age of 18. They will be exposed to fundamentals of the sport and skill development, both on and off the field. Former first class batsman Mark Harper will serve as the Technical Director of the clinic which targets some 120 youths. Harper will be supported by Garvin Nedd, former West Indies test players, Travis Dowlin, Reon King

and Roger Harper along with national fast bowler Paul Wintz. Mark Harper stated that apart from the basics of the game, the programme will include classroom sessions, as well as master classes, where the older participants will learn more about the art of spin and fast bowling, batting and fielding. Former Guyana offspinner Nedd said that the camp is designed to produce well-rounded cricketers and noted that over the years a number of players who participated in the camp went on to represent Guyana and West Indies at various levels.
