From Keith Aaron to Brian Sattaur, Guyana seeking one more Under-19 three day glory The Regional Under-19 Championship will commence on July 27 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Guyana, led by Travis Persaud will be looking to continue their three day dominance at this level. The last time the tournament was hosted by S t . Vi n c e n t a n d t h e Grenadines, Guyana led by Leon Johnson failed to bring home the bacon. Today Kaieteur Sports and Statistician Charwayne Walker salute the men that brought the bacon home starting with Queens College’s Keith Aaron, who led the land of many waters to their inaugural championship in 1968 when Barbados was the host. Timur Mohamed was the man wearing the captaincy armband when Guyana won its second championship in 1975. He led from the front in the final against Barbados at the Kensington Oval with centuries in each innings 158 and 103 not out. Timur Mohamed was the man

calling plays again when Guyana won championship #3 in 1976. The Guyanese heroes were Andrew Lyght who scored 106 in the finals at Sabina Park along with spinners Sen Gopaul and Suresh Ganouri. Latchman Bhansingh led Guyana to title #4 but the player of that championship was Carl Hooper who took 33 wickets and scored a tournament best of 404 runs, the year was 1985. Andre Percival led the land of many waters to championship # 5, 6 and 7 from 1992 to 1994. He is the only man in the Caribbean to ever achieve that feat, winning three consecutive tournaments. Mahendra Nagamootoo led from the front when the land of the majestic Kaieteur Falls won championship #8 in 1995; the host was Grenada. Vishal Nagamootoo emulated his brother’s feat the next year by bringing home the bacon in 1996, the host was Jamaica. That was Guyana’s ninth Under-19 title.

Clive Atwell in NY as part of his surgery fund raising drive Guyanese Boxing Champion Clive Atwell suffered a brain injury in November last year while opposing Dexter Gonsalves in a title fight at the Giftland Mall and had to undergo an emergency surgery on the night of that fight. Atwell says that after exhausting all avenues locally to raise funds toward his second surgery, his wife and two members of his C o m m i t t e e , Ly n d o n ‘Jumbie’ Jones and Rajan Tiwari through the sponsorship of Fly Jamaica traveled to the United States to seek financial support from the Diaspora to help raise US$25,000. Atwell’s team was invited to various events where they provided updates on the situation and individuals were encouraged to support. Atwell sold DVD’s of his fights, T-Shirts and Guyana souvenirs, arts and craft created by Irene Bacchus-Holder of ‘Amazon Authentics’ and attended a softball cricket tournament involving many Guyanese at Roy Wilkins

Park New York. His team was invited to the Guyana American foundation heritage fun day in New Jersey and Lady Ira Lewis and the Guyana Heritage Foundation of which she is the president, have joined Atwell in his effort to bring an end to his plight. Through an article published in the Caribbean light newspaper by Tangerine Clark, Tony Singh, his son-in-law (Kevin) and the members of Safe Harbor Ministries reached out to Atwell to offer financial support, encouragement and prayers for him and his family during this time. Clive Atwell stated that between Guyana and the U.S.A he was able to raise US$7,500 and US$ 4,465 respectively, which totals US$11,965 towards his surgery to date. “The response for assistance was not as forthcoming as we would have expected but we thank God for sending the people that has approached us with compassion, support and (Continued on page 32)

Ramnaresh Sarwan was the man in charge when the boys from South America captured championship # 10; the year was 1997 and Guyana was the host. Steven Jacobs was the man wearing the captaincy armband when the land of many waters won championship # 11 and 12 in 2006 in Guyana and 2007 in St. Kitts. Brian Sattaur led Guyana to its 13th three day championship in 2014. He

also led Guyana to the limited overs championship that year and the host was Guyana. Although Travis Persaud led Guyana to the limited overs championship last year in Jamaica, there was no three day tournament. So the million dollar question being asked by cricket fans is whether Travis Persaud will join the distinguished list above and give Guyana championship # 14; only time will tell.
