Sir Garry Sobers Endorses

CPL Franchise System BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Barbados’ only living National Hero, the Right Honourable Sir Garfield Sobers, has hailed the emergence of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League as crucial to the development of cricket in the Caribbean, and has also given the thumbs up to Kieron Pollard leading the Barbados Tridents. Sir Garry, arguably the finest cricketer the world has ever seen, said Twenty20 is important to the commercial survival of the game and lauded the fact that the Caribbean now had its own league of which to boast. “I think it is wonderful from the point of view that all around the world you have the Twenty20 game and it would be nice to have it in the West Indies,” said the legendary 76-year-old. “You

need it. You need Twenty20. If you didn’t have Twenty20, do you know how many counties in England would have gone out of cricket? When you look at the four-day games of cricket in England you don’t have anybody there at all. When you look at a Twenty20 game, the ground is actually full so they are making the money from that format of the game to help the four-day cricket.” The Limacol CPL is set to bowl off at Kensington Oval in Barbados on 30 July with a glitzy opening ceremony, followed by a super clash between host team Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Zouks. Tridents will then turn their attention to Antigua Hawksbills on 1 August before rounding off the tripleheader with a much anticipated clash with Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel on 3 August. Sir Garry, who led West Indies in 39 of his 93 Tests

during an illustrious career, said he believed the franchise system would help to strengthen the bonds of regionalism. “Let’s look at it from this point of view: they say that West Indies cricket is the only thing in the Caribbean that unites us. We’re all together,” he noted. “If you have a Trinidadian playing in Barbados, [that’s ok]. You can have Trinidadians playing for Barbados, you can have Jamaicans playing for Barbados, you can have Barbadians playing for Jamaica because there are no rules or limit on how much time they have to spend in an island before they play.” To this end, Sir Garry was quick to endorse Pollard’s appointment as captain. “If Pollard is playing for Barbados and he is the captain, I don’t see anything wrong with it. He is a Trinidadian who is playing for the Barbados franchise,” Sir

Garry contended. “If it was like the inter-territorial games [in the past] and he was playing for Barbados, well then he became a Barbadian because he was playing for Barbados and that is a similar thing that is happening right now. I don’t see the big argument about it and all the fuss that is being made. All that matters is that he is a good enough captain and once he is good enough to captain I don’t see any arguments.” The Limacol Caribbean Premier League will feature an array of Caribbean and international stars contesting

24 matches, played across Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago, from 30 July to 24 August. Ninety players have been contracted to play in the CPL, with each of the six franchise teams comprising 15 players. Barbados Tridents comprises Pollard, Shoaib Malik, Shakib al Hasan, Umar Akmal, Dwayne Smith, Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel, Rayad Emrit, Ashley Nurse, Carlos Brathwaite, Jonathan Carter, Kyle Mayers, Devendra Bishoo, Kirk Edwards and Raymon Reifer.

MACAU (Reuters) Filipino boxing great Manny Pacquiao has predicted an all out slugfest with American Brandon Rios on November 24 as he looks to get back to winning ways and silence retirement talks after two consecutive losses. Pacquiao 54-5-2 (KO 38) makes his first return to the ring since a brutal knockout

defeat by old advisory Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas in December, a loss which many predicted would close out the 34-year-old’s career. Undeterred, Pacquiao has lined up a non-title welterweight battle with the aggressive Rios for his first fight in eight months and first in Asia in seven years. “It’s going to be a good

fight because Rios, he loves to fight toe-to-toe and he loves action in the ring,” Pacquiao told reporters in Macau on Saturday. “So what we have to do is to train hard and prepare a hundred percent physically and mentally. And of course we always praying to God that nobody gets hurt,” the world champion at eight

different weights said. Rios 31-1-1 (23 KOs) is also coming off a defeat, a points loss to Mike Alvarado at light welterweight in Las Vegas in March. The 27-year-old former lightweight world champion was confident, though, of claiming victory over Pacquiao and moving back into title contention.

Sir Garry Sobers chats with Marlon Samuels at the launch of the CPL in February 2013.

GUYANA TO FACE JAMAICA IN BOTH FINALS AT CARIBBEAN SQUASH TOURNEY Guyana booked their place in both finals of the team events with hard fought victories over Trinidad & Tobago. Guyana played Trinidad first in the Boys semifinals. First on court was Shomari Wiltshire in the Boys Under-13 tie. He was just too good for his opponent Kobie Khan winning easily three games to nil. Next on court Ben Mekdeci destroyed Jonathan Blanc three games to nil. The match up of Under-19 number one strings saw Jean Claude moved out to an early nine points to four lead in the first game against Caribbean Under-19 runner up Mandela Patrick, but he lost the game and eventually lost the other two easily thus losing three games to love. The match of the

afternoon was the rematch between the two Under-17 finalists Nyron Joseph and Nku Patrick and it went down to the wire. Nyron won the first and Nku won the second. Nyron won the third and at ten four match ball, it seemed all was lost for Nku and Guyana was in the final but Nku dug deep and clawed his way back to take the fourth and then the fifth. It then came down to the decider between Steven Xavier and Chad Salandy. Steven held his nerve and was a comfortable winner by three games to nil. In the girls match first on court was Madeda Harding against Amiee De Verteuil in the Girls Under-13 tie. Makeda played a controlled game and was an easy winner three games to nil.

The Girls Under-15’s were on court next and Rebecca Low played a fantastic match against Marie Claire Barcant. Rebecca went up two games to nil and at ten nine match ball in her favour in the third it seemed as if Guyana’s place in the finals was more certain, but it was not to be as Marie Claire managed to win the third and the won the fourth and fifth games fairly comfortably. The Girls Under-19 number one strings were next on the court and this again featured the two finalists in the division, Victoria Arjoon and Charlotte Knaggs. Victoria again played quite well in the first game but Charlotte was much too quick to the ball and won the match three games to nil. In the girls Under-17 tie Akeila Wiltshire played Faith

Marion Gillezeau and was a comfortable winner by three game to nil. Again like in the Boys tie it had come down to the Under-19 number two tie to determine which team would move forward to play in the final. Gabby Fraser, who had finished third in the Girls under-17 division, was pitted against Talia Abdool who had finished fourth in the Girls Under-19 division. Gabby won the first game quite easily but Talia came out more focused in the second, but once Gabby was able to win the second game eleven points to eight, it seemed to take all the fighting spirit out of Talia and Gabby won the third to win the match by three games to nil. Guyana will play Jamaica at 12:00 noon in the Girls final and at 1:00 pm in the Boys final.
