Letters... Where your views make the news

Misfits continue the irreparable erosion of cricket in Guyana DEAR EDITOR, It is with profound dismay that I read in the Kaieteur News of February, 02, 2014 a letter from one Intikhab Sankar which amounted to no more that an outrageous attempt to discredit our former Test cricketer and national captain, Roger Harper, who was part of the illustrious West Indies team that dominated world cricket for fifteen (15) years. To set the record straight, I am fully aware that Intikhab Sankar is an associate of Anand Sanasie. The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) is the best run, most efficient and productive Association in Guyana. The GCA continues to be well sponsored, stages many cricket development programmes and competitions and its cricketers form the majority of those selected to the various national teams. Roger Harper, as the President of the GCA, has been doing an excellent job and has brought to bear his vast cricketing and organizational skills in the interest of promoting and developing cricket in Georgetown. I am not sure if Intikhab Sankar is from a cricketing background or is prepared to assist in the development of cricket. If so, I wish to direct

him to cricket on the West Demerara, the area from where his close friend Anand Sanasie hails. Sanasie was up to recently, President of the West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA). He is presently a Vice-President of that Association. Intikab Sankar’s time and effort would therefore be better spent in establishing why cricket in his area, West Demerara, is in such a shambolic state. No cricket is being played there and the entire West Demerara has not produced a single player for the senior national team for over fifteen (15) years. A few years ago, Anand Sanasie unceremoniously removed Mr. Harnarine Tiwari from the Presidency of the WDCA by holding elections after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) was adjourned and the majority of the official delegates had left. During this time, the presidency of the WDCA changed from Sanasie to Shradananda then back to Sanasie and then to Lalta Digamber, a close friend of Sanasie. The present situation in West Demerara is that nine of the fourteen clubs that form the WDCA have been sidelined by Sanasie, Digamber and their cohorts

and only their five ‘friendly’ clubs participated in the past two elections. This resulted in the nine clubs forming their own Association to provide for the cricket-starved youngsters on the West Demerara. This move was met with threats to our players by members of the WDCA and has severely impeded the progress of cricket on West Demerara. The situation is alarming and no one seems to want to confront Anand Sanasie who is also on the Demerara Cricket Board, the Guyana Cricket Board and the West Indies Cricket Board where he uses his influence to stifle our efforts. We therefore welcome the initiative and are happy to learn that the Cricket Administrative Bill 2012, which was tabled in Parliament, will restore order and establish legality to our shattered cricket structure. We sincerely hope that all parties in Parliament will overcome their differences and pass the Bill without further delay as the misfits in control of our cricket continue the irreparable erosion of our great national game. The nine clubs mentioned above are firmly in support of the Bill. Bhawan Mc Coon President, Uitvlugt Cricket Club

Empower voters and party... From page 5 for forming a minority government with outside support from the Congress. The AAP members overwhelmingly endorsed forming a government and the leader listened to his members and formed a minority government. On the issue of a primary, in Delhi, a spokesperson for Gandhi said the Congress leader would like to experiment with the idea of “choosing Congress candidates for Lok Sabha polls in over 15 seats (elections likely in May) with direct feedback on the lines of US primaries notwithstanding some initial hiccups”. He said the new process “is in line with Gandhi’s focus on opening the system by ending the high command culture and empowering the grass root workers”. We need such political empowering in Guyana where voters are treated like electoral slaves of the parties with hardly anything in return (good governance and a fair share of resources) for their labour. Politicians seek self enrichment at the expense of the voters ignoring them. In neighbouring Trinidad, Basdeo Panday floated a similar concept during the 1990s but it did not take off. He shelved it when he became Prime Minister. He re-advocated it after 2001 when he lost office. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also supported Primaries to select candidates for UNC in local and general elections. But the concept was not implemented though she promises to put it into effect soon. There is talk of making it a part of the constitution in proposed constitutional reform. It is noted that the UNC does have membership vote for the leadership

(executives) of the party. The PNM will hold election under one man one vote in May for its executives. Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley has put forward his name to contest for leadership; there are no announced challengers although it is felt deputy Chair and former Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Penelope Beckles will vie for the position. A poll I conducted put Rowley in the lead among PNMite supporters (not prospective voting members – voting membership is not finalized as yet). It is my belief that people at the grass roots level, the party’s members, should be the ones to choose candidates – in a primary perhaps. A handful of leaders residing in Georgetown should not choose who should be the peoples’ candidates at say No. 63 Village or in Wismar or Charity. Let the people at the village level choose their nominee for representative. There should be a proper laid out structure for selecting nominees — Tammany Hall type politics in Guyana should come to an end. The process is very undemocratic. It should be transparent and not akin to backroom deals as happen in all three parties. Primaries help to empower party workers in candidates’ selection and motivate people to work harder for their party and towards better governance. Such a system will help to reform the government putting decent people in charge and cleanse the political system of the corrupt. Why can’t the parties experiment with primaries to empower voters as in Trinidad, US, some European countries and now in India? Vishnu Bisram
