Minnows in high contention as Black Hawks carts off lion’s share GASP stages open championship of prizes in Martial Arts tourney Not so long ago, scrabble players, Wayne Cave, Maurice Munroe and Robert Williams were merely lowly rated seeds attempting to solidify their rankings among their highly rated counterparts. Then Leon Belony assumed the helm of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) and introduced a new strategy where the best player from among the lowly rated seeds was awarded a special prize at the end of tournaments. The ploy seems to have worked since those players have lifted themselves from the rubble and are now competing strongly against their senior counterparts. Now fresh from a scintillating victory in the just concluded Tier ‘B’ championships last weekend, Wayne Cave will be at the top of his game and enters as a strong contender when the GASP stages an Open Scrabble Championship at the Maltenoes Sports Club tomorrow morning. It would

also be foolhardy to dismiss Munroe and Williams as just mere contenders since these two have demonstrated a high level of consistence which is a very important trait in the word forming game. Several of the big guns will also vie for places including Moen Gafoor, James Krakowsky, Leon Belony, Colin Chichester and Orlando Michael among others. Those in the distaff category will also be anxious to mark their name among the

top finishers. As such, the men will have to be weary of National Champion, Abigail McDonald, Ruby Cummings and Grace Hercules among others. The registration starts at 09:30hrs and the first tile will be moved half an hour later. The early birds will benefit from a $200 discount from the stipulated $700 while apart from the full fee; latecomers will have their clocks activated in their absence.

Smartt satisfied with Guyana‘s performance in Regional Women’s tourneys National Women’s T\20 captain, all-rounder Tremayne Smartt told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that she is satisfied with the overall performance of the Guyana Women’s team in the recently concluded Regional 50 overs and T\20 tournaments. Guyana reached the semifinal in the 50 over competition before losing to Trinidad and Tobago by 7 runs thr o u g h t h e D u c k w o r t h Lewis method. Guyana totaled 191 batting first while the Trinis were 74-2 in 25 overs in reply before the rain came. Berbican Smartt said that the Guyana team showed lots of improvement in 2013 “We played as a team and the spirit was high’, she added. Smartt credited June Ogle who led the team in the team

Tremayne Smartt in the 50 overs competition. Ogle scored the most runs in the 50 over format there by receiving the award for the best batter. “She did a good job leading the team, she

motivated us well and lead from the front”, Smartt pointed out. She indicated that the batting let the team down a bit. She stated that the batters did not step up when it really matters, but the bowling and fielding were relatively good. Smartt believes Guyana need a female league so that the players will continue to improve. Guyana beat Trinidad and Tobago for the first time in the T\20 format and topped the points table in the preliminaries winning all their games before losing to Jamaica in the semis by 5 wickets in the last over. However, the Berbician was pleased with her performance stating that she achieved her goals. (Zaheer Mohamed)
