“Where Everybody’s Proud to be Somebody,” is echoed throughout Snellville. A city whose roots extend back to 19th century London, it’s a fast-growing town at the intersection of the U.S. Highway 78 and Georgia 124. Muscogee Natives were the original settlers of Snellville, termed the “Creeks” by settlers as they lived along the waterways. When English friends Thomas Snell and James Sawyer planned a voyage to the New World, they had no idea they would be critical in the founding of one of Gwinnett’s great cities. Snellville officially received its charter in 1923, about 50 years later. Now, The Grove at Town Center is the planned vision of a renewed future where Snellville is a leading force in the Gwinnett County Community. With thousands of square feet for office and retail space, it’s easy to get excited about the city’s future.

Local legend says that a freight wagon traveling from the railroad in Buford to Cumming broke a wheel while traversing a steep hill, spilling sugar over one of the highest points in Gwinnett County. From a sleepy bedroom community to a vibrant and quaint downtown, there’s always something fun to see and do in Sugar Hill.

SO, THE STORY GOES…

GUIDE TO GWINNETT HISTORY

Suwanee Depot 1910-1920, served railroad connections between Suwanee and Lawrenceville until the early 1920s.

Gwinnett County has long been on the map. The origins of our beloved county go back to the year 1818, but the history goes back even further. The lands of Gwinnett and much of North Georgia had been home to the Creek and Cherokee Natives for many years. A corridor of land along the Chattahoochee was ceded to the government, and from this land in combination with parts of Jackson County, came Gwinnett! The county was named after one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Button Gwinnett. One could argue, if not for the success of the county over the years, Button would have faded into the shadows as barely a memory. Thanks to a vibrant economy and a long history of 30

GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

success, the legacy of Button Gwinnett is on solid ground– or just above it. His likeness is perched high atop the Mall of Georgia looking down over what was once a rural, agricultural area. The oldest surviving building in Gwinnett is the Elisha Winn House in Dacula. The original occupant, Mr. Winn, was a justice of the court and a senator in the 1800’s. The House was built before the county even existed, and for a few years, it served as the planning headquarters for what would become Gwinnett County. It was Mr. Winn who was later chosen to select the first county seat and a site for a new courthouse. He plunked down $200 for a 250-acre plot pretty much in the center of the county.

a bunch of rocks in a big old river and dam it up to make a humongous lake. Works every time. The dam for Lake Lanier was built on the Chattahoochee in the late 1950’s, located on the northern tip of Gwinnett, forming our western border. The lake now provides power, water and recreation for Gwinnett and the region. Over the next couple of decades, Gwinnett would continue to evolve and prosper. The 1960s’ and 70’s would bring the iconic Water Towers, constructed along I-85 on Rockbridge Road or what is now known as Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Later, the slogans “Gwinnett is Great” and “Success Lives Here” were added, creating a landmark of sorts for Gwinnett—at least until they were dismantled in 2010.

Gwinnett County Courthouse around 1950

In 1821, the City of Lawrenceville was incorporated and declared the county seat. By 1885 in Lawrenceville, there had been a courthouse fire, a courthouse rebuilding, a courthouse outgrowing and ultimately a courthouse replacement. The new courthouse, now known as the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse, was built in 1885 on the square in Lawrenceville and served the county’s judicial needs until 1988. Today, it is home to the Gwinnett Historical Society and serves as a venue for events, weddings and a host of community events. Choo Choo, along come more Gwinnett cities! The railroad line that was built through the county in 1871 can be credited for the birth of Norcross, Duluth, Suwanee and Buford. Yep, back then—just like today—transportation and infrastructure were the main catalyst for growth and economic development.

The 1980s’ brought Gwinnett’s first mall on Pleasant Hill Road. Prior to that, the intersection was mostly noted for the US 76 Truck Stop, where scenes for the Burt Reynolds movie “Smokey and The Bandit” were shot. Yep, seems like Hollywood and moviemaking were knocking on the door even way back then! Gwinnett soon became known as the fastest growing county in the country. The landscape would continue to evolve with signature buildings emerging from a land that was once home to cotton crops and dairy farming. Gas South Arena, a new Chamber of Commerce building, Georgia Gwinnett College, Coolray Field and the Mall of Georgia marked milestones of vision and progress through the early 2000’s. No doubt our forefathers would be surprised to see what has become of Gwinnett and one can only imagine what the future holds. If history is a precursor for what lies ahead, we’ll be saying “Success Lives Here” for years to come.

The county’s first major industry was leather goods. Buford was the place to be for shoes and saddles and everything in between. These saddles were famous, the legendary “cowboy” and Western actor Roy Rogers fancied them and visited Buford often for fittings. His statue, marking days gone by, can be seen in downtown Buford. GRAB THOSE

BOOGEY SHOES, LET'S GO DANCING BALLET

It sure is graceful, but ballet is also a highly technical dance form. This genre of dance relies on precision and methodology coming together to make beautiful art.

MODERN FOLK

Representation and storytelling come onto the stage here, modern dance uses freedom of movement mixed with physical expressions to leave the audience with a message.

CONTEMPORARY

BALLROOM

Dances in this category include your classics: waltz, tango, foxtrot and more. Always with a partner, latin and rhythm dances are in this category too.

Want little bit of everything? Contemporary brings influences from various choreography styles. Often lyrical, this dance genre is adaptable to the music. It’s a go with the flow kind of style.

Folk dance is a dance for and of the people. Folk dance can include ritual dances, ceremonial dances and cultural dances. Indian Bharatanatyam, Hawaiian Hula, Japanese Kabuki, Irish Stepdance and more can be found in this category.

HIP-HOP

Pop-it, lock-it and break it down. Hip-hop teaches fundamentals in an energetic and funky way, plus there’s a whole lot of room for freestyling here.

THE POPCORN PAST

We love popcorn! Nothing beats that buttery flavor when watching a movie! But where did popcorn come from? Yes, we know it’s corn, but how did corn become the staple for film-goers around the world? Turns out, you can thank the Great Depression! Popcorn had been around for a while, a common food on the streets and at fairs. Movie theaters were still aiming for an elevated experience in the early 20th century. With their velvet red carpets and fancy seats they had a strict “no food allowed policy”, but we’d bet people in those early days smuggled in snacks just like we do now! People wanted some cheap entertainment and with a movie ticket costing just a quarter, it was the perfect night out. The increase in moviegoers led to popcorn vendors setting up shop outside the theater. Seeing that these popcorn vendors were making money, movie theaters started to open popcorn concessions hoping to get in on the profit. And it certainly worked! Nowadays even nachos, pretzels, candy and sodas are synonymous with the movie experience. Snacks with a movie are so commonplace that we don’t really mind when someone starts loudly chewing during the silent parts!

NOT YOUR NORMAL NIGHT OUT Puzzles and board games will always remain champions of family-night gatherings and friendly hangouts, but getting out and about for weekend entertainment is the new thing. The way we have fun is changing! Bowling can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, just imagine King Tut getting a split! While bowling and arcade games are still prominent, now there are escape rooms and amusement centers too.You can do indoor go karting to get some adrenaline on Saturday nights or throw an ax at a target and work on your aim! Ax throwing has been a lumberjack event for centuries, but now you can compete with your friends. Have you been indoor skydiving before? That’s an option too! There’s so many options in Gwinnett and all around. So it’s time to try something new!

SO, AXE THROWING IS A THING. For those hoping to live out viking dreams or celtic callings, there’s great news for you! Axe throwing has taken over as an activity, with locations popping up across the country.

CAN YOU IMAGINE sitting in the back row of an auditorium and hearing the actor sigh on stage? Have you ever sat in nosebleed seats or the back row and struggled to listen? Greek theaters like the Epidaraus made sure that every audience member could hear, no matter where they were sitting. Talk about great acoustics! Theater and acting can be traced back to 6th Century B.C. That’s a long time! Humans have been telling stories since they could talk and these stories have been passed down for generations. From plays to silent films to 3D Live action, people love performances. Movies are just a theater performance in front of a camera that the audience gets to watch later! Gwinnettians can catch live theater, Shakespearean theater and modern theater all across the county. There’s often a performance on one of our town stages during the summer. The show must go on so be sure you go to a show, you’ll love it. Buy a ticket today!

HOW TO BE A

WINE PARING PRO WHITE VS. RED WINES

White wines tend to be zesty, sweet and light. Red wines tend to be velvety and deep in flavor. The main difference? During fermentation, red wine is made from grapes with skin on.

DRY VS. SWEET

This comes down to sugar, sweet wines having more of it. The sugar content is determined by the fermentation time.

REDS:

WHITES:

Cabernet Sauvignon rich and earthy, it’s steak’s best friend.

Chardonnay a bit buttery and pairs well with creamy pasta, chicken or salmon.

Pinot Noir smooth and fruity, it’s great with duck or lamb. Zinfandel this wine is bold and forward, but it pairs well with smoky meats.

Rose: this is created when red grape fermenting time is cut short, giving it that pretty pink color. These wines are usually a blend and are fresh and fruity, great with almost everything!

Pinot Grigio often fruity and pairs well with shellfish, light dishes and cheeses.

Sauvignon Blanc crisp and dry, goes great with green veggies or briny foods.

PLAN A

POWER LUNCH

A BUSINESS LUNCH is no average lunch. It should be smart, planned and delicious. Power lunches came about in Manhattan, when restaurants were working to create meals conducive to business meetings. In the 1970’s, CEOs and VIPS were having long lunches in their favorite New York restaurants, since they could afford the time and money to take a luxurious break and talk business. While the idea of a working lunch had been around decades longer, the “power lunch” concept swept its way down the coast and all over. Nowadays, it’s a concept that applies to everybody! Making sure the location and setting are sophisticated, but enjoyable, is essential. So what does a perfect power lunch look like? Pick a restaurant that is on the quieter side. Loud noises and waiters singing happy birthday doesn’t really match the tone of professionalism. Go for a restaurant that’s elevated, but not too formal. Always call ahead to schedule. Showing up and having to wait thirty minutes for a thirty minute meeting isn’t ideal. Another tip to sealing the deal? Food choices. While what you order is always personal preference, it’s best to consider if eating the lunch special spaghetti is going to make a mess on that white business shirt. Make sure your table etiquette is in tip top shape. Budgets and time-constraints are a factor here too. A power lunch may not mean a patient one, not when there’s a deadline and hands to shake!

TRAVEL THROUGH

TAKEOUT:

WE WISH we could get on a plane and fly to Italy every time we get a craving for pizza or Japan every time sushi sounds good, but that might begin to run up a bit of a bill! Luckily, Gwinnett has some foodie finds that are only a phone call away. Whether it’s takeout, delivery or an app like DoorDash, there’s a whole world of exciting cuisine from the comfort of your couch. Korean food ranges from sweet to spicy to savory, with some dishes being a combination of all three! Tteokbokki is chewy rice cake with a sauce that is all of those things. Want a little bit of everything on your plate? Colombian Bandeja Paisa is exactly that - rice, beans, eggs, sausage, chicharron, plantain arepa, should we go on? While chicken tikka masala and butter chicken are staple Indian dishes, try Aloo Gobi, a staple in its own right. This cauliflower based dish is vegetarian and packed with flavors such as turmeric, garlic and chili. Want something soupy and warming? Try Vietnamese Bun Bo Hue for spicy beef and pork soup with noodles. If a hearty meal with some healthy benefits sounds good right about now, try Nigerian Ogbono soup. There’s a world of food to try out there, we’re only scratching the surface here. Look through the guide and pick a place that excites your taste buds!

TIRES, TOWING, AND TUNEUPS POP THE HOOD! It’s time to learn the ins and

outs of your automobile. Maybe you’re guilty of ignoring the orange issue lights flickering on your dashboard or you find yourself wondering how to pimp up your ride. Obsessed with that new car smell? For car junkies and motor novices alike, there are plenty of cool tricks and tips to make sure your ride is a smooth one.

THE BUZZ ABOUT THE ELECTRIC CAR

EV IS IN RIGHT NOW! Sure, electric vehicles (EV) are good for the environment, but they are also sleek, fast and cool! The EV culture is booming and nearly all the major auto manufacturers have joined Tesla and Rivian to meet the demand! With supply amping up there are more electric vehicles on our local highways than ever before. More electric vehicles means more charging stations in Gwinnett. Perhaps you’ve seen them at the Mall of Georgia or outside your neighborhood or workplace already. Yep, the EV culture is here and it will be a fixture of our community for years to come. And hey, Gwinnettians are busy people so it shouldn’t come as a shock that more folks want to save both time and money by going electric. Recharging is less expensive than gasoline (especially these days) and many owners opt to charge their cars at home, saving them time. EV cars also tend to have fewer moving parts, and so the idea is that means fewer repairs. Hot Take: That’s also a great benefit to buying a previously owned EV. Oh, and did we mention torque? How could we forget that? EV cars have some sick zero to sixty times! So, it turns out that the biggest reason that drivers love EVs is just as classic as your grandpa’s 57 Chevy. They are just super fun to drive! 50

DASHBOARD DIAGNOSIS A QUICK VISUAL GUIDE TO WHAT THAT FLASHING LIGHT ON YOUR DASHBOARD MEANS: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

Usually, a common cause such as a loose gas cap, a failing spark plug or a bad oxygen sensor. This could be a simple fix or a serious issue, it’s probably best to leave it to the professionals to figure it out.

BATTERY LIGHT

Your vehicle’s charging system isn’t properly functioning. This could be the battery itself or it could be caused by a different electrical fault in the system. Before you examine your battery, make sure you’re wearing protective gloves. If it’s an issue you can’t recognize, definitely take it to a shop.

BRAKE WARNING

It could be low brake fluid, or something serious, like an issue with the master cylinder. Don’t get this light confused with the parking brake light, which just means you’ve left that brake on.

OIL PRESSURE WARNING

If this light is glowing, it’s letting you know that oil is not circulating properly. This could mean low oil pressure and that can cause your engine to seize up.

TIRE PRESSURE WARNING

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System activates this light. You need to pull over as soon as possible - you’ve got a leak, an underinflated tire or a flat. If it’s one of the first two, tire shops can help you out. They’ll be happy to change it when you bring it into the shop or if you need it replaced. Got a flat? Time to call a tow. UNDER THE HOOD WHAT’S THAT NOISE?

EVERY DRIVER KNOWS THE MOMENT One minute you’re driving and everything seems fine, and then your heart drops as you hear a strange noise coming from your car. Do you ignore it hoping it will go away? Do you call your dad? Do you hit the steering wheel like they do in the movies? That never works by the way. Learning a little bit about some of the common noises your car might make, can help you identify what the problem may be and help determine when you should visit your mechanic. Here are a few common car sounds and what might be causing them.

1. S QUEALING OR LOUD GRINDING SOUND

Possible Cause: Worn out brake pads.

2. S CREECHING SOUND UNDER THE HOOD

Possible Cause: A loose or worn serpentine belt.

3. TICKING NOISE WHILE YOUR CAR IS IDLE

Possible Cause: If you hear this while you’re stopped— you might be low on oil. Beware of this one! Get an oil change as soon as you can! A blown engine is nothing to joke about and it’s totally preventable!

4. CHUGGING OR RATTLING NOISES Possible Cause: Exhaust system.

5. CLUNKING WHILE DRIVING

Possible Cause: It might be a bad shock absorber, which has an impact on handling, steering and even braking.

6. S CRAPING NOISES FROM WINDSHIELD WIPERS

Possible Cause: Not a surprise, but your wiper is wearing down. Yes, you do have to change those!

BLING OUT AND CLEAN OUT YOUR RIDE

Do you find yourself cringing when you open your car door? It's probably time you spent an afternoon and gave it a deep clean. Yet, how would you even go about doing it? Well, that's where this list comes in.

EXTERIOR:

INTERIOR:

• Washing - The best way to start cleaning is to rinse it to remove any loose filth. This is then followed up with a thorough scrub-down with a sponge and some soap.

• Remove Junk - The first step to cleaning any interior is to remove all the junk and clutter. It all has to go, whether it's a computer bag, shoes, or anything else.

• P olishing - Once it's good and dry, you can begin to polish the vehicle with a buffer. The purpose of a buffer is to remove surface imperfections and improve its sheen.

• Surface Clean - You can then move on to vacuuming and wiping down all the surfaces. This will remove any build-up of grime and debris littered throughout the vehicle.

•W axing - For the final step, use natural or synthetic wax to apply a glossy protective coating. While modern paints are quite resilient, another layer of defense can be worthwhile.

• Deep Clean - A carpet cleaner can remove any stubborn filth that wouldn't come off by hand or vacuum. Lastly, you can remove the paneling to clean the dirt caught between the cracks.

Keeping your vehicle clean is a great way to improve its condition and prevent debris from corroding or scoring the paint.

54

The cabin interior should also be cleaned regularly to remove allergens, prevent damage, and improve overall cleanliness.

EYEBROWS SET THE TONE

MAYBE YOU TWEEZE, MAYBE YOU WAX or maybe you don’t touch those eyebrows at all! Whatever your approach, it’s interesting to learn about how eyebrows have become as much of an accessory as a necklace or a cute purse. Brow shapes go in and out of fashion, just like everything else. In the 30’s they were pencil thin and drawn on. In the 80s’ they were bold and bushy. Today, eyebrow buzz words like “soap”, “tint” and “lamination” are floating around. You can even get them tattooed. Gwinnettians are wondering, just like everybody else, what do I do with my eyebrows!? Whatever the style may be, it is always best not to over do it. Overtweezing or waxing can damage the hair follicle, meaning they might not grow back! You can use soap to slick brows in place or a pencil to color and shape. Everyone’s brows, just like their hair, grow differently. Brows give character to the face and they help carry our expressions. A more curved brow adds an element of surprise or softness. A thick angled brow adds definition. Experiment and find the best brow shape for you!

Eyelashes, we’ve all got them. But there’s more to them than meets the… eye? Here’s a glimpse into the world of fluttery winks and lash types!

MASCARA most people know this one. Usually in a tube, but there’s a

whole world of colors and wand types. Waterproof and black are the most popular!

FAKE EYELASHES

sometimes called “falsies”, these are put onto your natural lash line. They can be adhered with magnets, glue or water. There’s a ton of style options, but at the end of the day these come off.

EYELASH EXTENSIONS We could talk about all the different styles

(synthetic, minx, silk, you get it), but in short these are semi-permanent and last about a month before they need to be refilled.

LASH TINT

A perm for your eyelashes, gives you curl and volume. Lift those lashes up and let them set for 24 hours, then they’re good to go for about 4 to 6 weeks.

HOW TO TALK WITH WHOEVER STYLES YOUR HAIR

You can only sit so long before it starts to become uncomfortable. And not just the chair. Do you look in the mirror? Do you keep your hands under the hair cape? How do you make small talk at a hair appointment? Don’t worry, your stylist or barber is wondering the same thing. Small talk over a trim can be awkward, but that’s okay! Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask what’s going on. Why are they clipping the ends a certain way or what exactly are they washing your hair with? Ask about the salon, or the stylist. Where did they learn to be a barber? There’s plenty of conversation to be had. The only thing we can’t help you with is how to keep a straight face when they ask if you’re happy with your hair and you’re not. The good news, you can avoid that all together by communicating along the way!

STYLE AND SELF-CARE:

MEN & WOMEN

Looking good and feeling good can go hand in hand. Gwinnettians deserve some self-care and maintenance and there’s plenty of places to get you to your best. Manicures and pedicures can be for everyone. We’re not saying you gotta go get neon fuschia nails, but everyone can and should get their cuticles trimmed, nails filed and feet scrubbed once in a while. Make it a date and go with your special someone! The same thing applies to skin care. Treat yourself to a facial at a spa or consider buying a new product to add to your routine. If you’re trying to revitalize your closet, try turning in those old t-shirts for some new pieces instead. Get a dress that matches his shirt, or a tie that matches her blouse and go for coordinated polished outfits on your next outing. Being well put together increases your confidence and charisma, it’s an investment into yourself!

NEW NAILS TO TRY

NAIL ART is a great way to self-express and there’s really no wrong way to do it! But if you’re looking for some inspiration for your next salon trip, here’s a couple things to ask for when you see your nail technician. WANT A CLASSIC TOUCH with a hint of sophistication? Ask for French tips, and if you’re feeling fun - ask for them in bright color! And of course you can’t go wrong with classic white. GLITZ AND GLAM are in style, especially on your nails. Ask for accent rhinestones, or some glitter to flash up your manicured nails! IF YOU CAN’T DECIDE on a color, ask for swirl nails! Get the colors you want in a wavy pattern that is both chic and groovy. This nail design can be on one nail or all of them. DON’T BE A SQUARE! Try a new nail shape! While square and oval are most popular, don’t be afraid to try almond, coffin, or stiletto nails if you dare!

PLEASURE DOIN' BUSINESS FROM AN IDEA TO AN EMPIRE, the business

industry is booming with big thinkers and innovators. Self-starters to long-time CEO's can benefit from a lesson or two in the principles of professional success. Resources like employment agencies, marketing firms, and business consultants are all essential building blocks and we can’t forget about the technology of it all. DUMMY PROOF YOUR WEBSITE

YOUR WEBSITE GUIDES CUSTOMERS through the curiosity phase of the relationship. The reason companies make mistakes on their website is because they aren’t looking at the website like their customers are looking at the website. A great website should do several things and consider several aspects.

"WHY WE WORK”

“KEEP IT SIMPLE”

Many companies simply put too much on their website. Keep in mind that people don’t read websites, they scan them.

"HOWCASHEWS TO BUY" It immediately should be clear and painless on what the next step would be for a customer. Click to buy is better than a, "Find Out More," button every day of the week.

"VISUALIZE IT" “WHAT WE OFFER”

It should clearly state what you offer and what kind of company you are. This isn’t the place to be cute and artsy. Be clear. Be smart, but be clear. What does your company’s products and services offer to a customer?

66

GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

A picture is worth a thousand words, so use images or videos to illustrate your services and limit your text.

From the home page a customer needs to have an idea of how your company is going to make their life better. Security? Comfort? Satisfaction? Maybe just a really clear result is the best way to communicate this.

“REINFORCE” Reinforce what you offer and how to buy it throughout your entire website and you will see the difference!

BUSINESS

YOUR MISSION STATEMENT STINKS MOST BUSINESSES HAVE A MISSION STATEMENT that isn’t working. It’s long, confusing, and unmemorable. Instead of moving people forward, it’s making people bored. Imagine how much more engaged you’d feel if you knew that the work you did every day played into an important mission! Isn’t that what a mission statement is supposed to be? If so, then why are they filled with corporate buzzwords that half your employees can’t even define! When you have a clearly defined mission statement, you have direction. Keep it simple. Exciting. Memorable. Most importantly, make it matter. To do that you need two main things. You need a problem your business can solve and a picture of what the world looks like when you solve it! Your business is overcoming a challenge. When your Mission statements have become ubiquitous employees come to work, they should know what problem you are solving. Then paint the since Peter Drucker and picture of what the world would look like if you accomplished your mission. Simply state others popularized them in your solution to the problem and end your mission statement with what happens if your the 1980s as a way for companies to business succeeds? A better world? Organized companies? Get creative, but don’t make it articulate their complicated. No one goes on a “mission” unless it has a direction. What’s yours? highest purpose.

BUTTON'S GUIDE to GWINNETT BUTTON'S GUIDE to GWINNETT

SO YOU WANNA START A BUSINESS, HUH? LET’S MAKE THAT HAPPEN

1 BRIGHT IDEA TIME: Have an idea that solves a problem. Like, no more struggling to find socks in the dark. Glow-in-the-dark socks, anyone?

6 NINJA-LEVEL NETWORKING: Attend events, meet people, hand out business cards like confetti. Networking is like a game of Monopoly - more properties (connections), more success!

11 SOCIAL MEDIA SIZZLE: Embrace social media like it’s your long-lost twin. Tweet, post, snap - do whatever it takes to be seen. Bonus points for cat memes.

2 THE “NAPKIN PITCH” TEST: Can you explain your idea on a napkin? If not, simplify. If yes, high five! You might also want to wash your hands after the high five.

7 THE LEGAL HOKEY POKEY: Register your business. Do the legal hokey pokey and turn yourself around—because that’s what it’s all about. Seriously, legality is a big deal.

12 HIRE YOUR AVENGERS: Assemble a killer team. Batman had Robin, you need your own dynamic duo (or trio, or quad). No superheroes? Just a bunch of awesome people.

3 NAME THAT BABY: Choose a catchy name that people won’t forget. Avoid names like “Bob’s Thingamajig Corporation.” Spice it up a bit! How about “Bob’s Quantum Gizmos”?

8 TECH-SAVVY TECHIE STUFF: Get your online presence groovin’. Website, social media, the whole shebang. If your website is stuck in the ‘90s, time to hit the refresh button.

13 FAIL FORWARD: Embrace failure like a long-lost friend. Each failure is a step closer to success. At least that’s what they say.

4 EMBRACE THE SPREADSHEET DANCE: Crunch the numbers. If your business plan is dancing like nobody’s watching, you’re doing it right.

9 BRANDING BLISS: Develop a logo that screams “Remember me!” and not “I made this in Paint.” Hire a pro if necessary.

14 UPGRADE YOUR SUPERPOWERS: Constantly learn and adapt. The business world is like a superhero movie; if you’re not upgrading your powers, you’re falling behind.

5 MONEY TALKS, HONEY: Figure out how much moolah you need. Don’t forget the essentials, like a disco ball for the office.

10 MASTER OF THE ELEVATOR PITCH: Perfect your elevator pitch. If you can’t pitch your idea in an elevator ride, you might need a taller building—or a shorter pitch.

15 DANCE LIKE EVERYONE’S WATCHING: Celebrate the wins, no matter how small. Victory dance mandatory.

REMEMBER, starting a business is like building a sandcastle—fun, sometimes messy, but totally worth it in the end. Go forth and conquer, you entrepreneurial rockstar!

GUIDE TO GWINNETT // CONTRACTORS

I KNOW A GUY…

OH NO! You’ve woken up in the middle of the

night and following the “drip, drip, drip” you find it... the dreaded unexpected leak. Maybe a storm blew in and that weathered old backyard tree came falling down ? We live and love in our houses, so we should make sure they’re fit and fixed u p . It’s time to take the do - it - yourself route or call in a professional of home improvement hope.

CONTR AC TORS

HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS THAT ARE TRULY DIY

WE’VE ALL GOT THAT UNDERLYING NEED TO MAKE THINGS BETTER, and the home is no exception. Before you start calling numbers to see if you can get on one of those HBTV Home Improvement shows, try these DIY projects. And if you’re still wanting a bigger change, find someone in our Guide to Contractors to help!

Hmm… you could use another shelf. Try a modern peg board or rustic pipe shelf for something a little more innovative.

Perhaps you’ve accented enough… Nah! Just grab yourself some matching throw pillows, curtains, and a few other accessories. DIY doesn’t have to mean construction!

BREAK THE MONOTONY WITH AN ACCENT WALL! SPLASH ON SOME BOLD COLOR WITH A BUCKET OF PAINT OR APPLY SOME TEXTURE WITH SOME WOOD OR STONE.

Employ that green thumb of yours and install a raised garden or two. The question is… colorful flowers or tasty strawberries?

WHY STOP AT WALLS? You’ve got

furniture too! Put on a pair of overalls, grab yourself a brush, and paint that entry table scarlet!

DON’T TOUCH THE THERMOSTAT!

What is it with Dads and thermostats? We’ve all been told to never ever touch the thermostat at some point or another. But is there a reason behind this other than a general Dad joke? Turns out, yes! Air conditioners aren’t built to repeatedly adjust the temperature to fit your preference in this hour or the next. Instead, they’re designed to maintain a constant temperature. Every time you change the thermostat, you’re introducing friction and thermal stress to your air conditioner. This friction can lead to motors overheating, bearing failures and much more. The more you mess with the thermostat, the greater the risk it'll break down quicker. We

74

GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

can’t say for sure if Dad knows this or not, there’s a chance he might just not like the temp you’re setting it to! In the event of a breakdown, repairs typically cost a few hundred dollars while a replacement can run a couple of grand. Even if nothing breaks, you’re still going to have a higher energy bill from dialing it up and down over and over. So if you’re a little chilly, throw on a sweater and a blanket. If you start to feel too warm, change into a tank and use the fan. Trust us, there are plenty of other ways to warm up or cool down that don't stress out your AC or your father.

Ladders - might seem like a good idea, until you’ve set it up a bit too steep to safely head up or come back down. Nail Guns - steer clear of automatic triggers or you might end up with a rouge nail somewhere you don’t quite want. Make sure you use a sequential trigger. Table-saw - it’s best to keep all your fingers, so if you aren’t an expert with this tool, you should find yourself one. Stud Guns - over-eager and under-informed can lead to accidents, never use things like stud guns without the proper know-how. Protection - never attempt a project without proper protection: the gear, the gloves, the googles, the whole get-up. Heavy Machinery - If your home improvement calls for any type of this it’s best not to do-it-yourself. It’s easy to get excited about renovation, but just because you’ve got the vision doesn’t mean you’ve got the know-how. Some stuff is best left to the professionals. No need to worry though, Gwinnett has an expert that can turn your house into a home when the project calls for someone with experience.

BRUSHES, BRIGHTENING, & BRACES LET’S SEE THOSE PEARLY WHITES!

Dental care is about more than just fresh breath, it’s about keeping those teeth strong and healthy. After all, they are our favorite tools for snack time. From flossing to brushing, we’ve got to pay attention to our teeth a couple times a day. You only get one set... (okay, two if you count baby teeth) so keeping cavity-free will give you plenty to smile about.

WHAT MAKES WISDOM TEETH SO WISE? Wisdom teeth are given their name due to their appearance at a later age in our lives. They usually start coming in after we’ve turned 18 years old. And unless we visit a dentist, they are here to stay! These are our “third-molars” and they have been causing problems for centuries, in fact there’s records of Ancient Greeks complaining about wisdom teeth too! While they might have helped our ancestors grind tough and uncooked foods, now they seem to be one of the pains that come with growing older. Most of us have at least one or two wisdom teeth. Some people are lucky enough to have all four of them. Only 35% of us don’t grow wisdom teeth! We’ve all seen those funny videos of people post-wisdom tooth surgery, goofy on that dentist’s gas! It’s hard to say who gets to be wise and who doesn’t, but most people who have wisdom teeth get them removed. What you don’t want to happen is for a wisdom tooth to be “impacted” meaning it can’t come out by itself and it might be pushing into your other teeth. This can cause all kinds of problems for your dental health, and even your jaw! Wanna know if you’ve got the teeth knowledge? Schedule an x-ray with your local dentist! Or if you’re starting to think you might have a tooth that’s ready to break free, talk to your dentist about that too! Gwinnett has plenty of experts who are wise enough about teeth that you won’t have to be!

SMILEOLOGY:

Here's what your smile says about you!

A smile is one of the best things in the world. Smiling is psychologically proven to make us feel happier. A smile or a laugh sends the body and brain all of those feel good chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin! When we smile, we look friendlier and more approachable. Though everyone may occasionally partake in the uncomfortable laugh or “hey, I feel awkward!” grins, smiles give our faces character and communicate kindness. Smiling and laughing can promote stress reduction and increase livelihood, making us live longer since they stimulate all kinds of muscles and parts of the brain. Even a fake smile has some of these benefits! So next time you’re in need of a mood boost, crack a smile or a laugh. They really are the best medicine!

DO I REALLY HAVE TO WEAR

MY RETAINER?

IN A WORD… YES. Orthodontists will be the first to tell you, the answer is a yes! But, if you’re curious to learn more, we can certainly tell ya. Your retainer keeps your teeth in place, because without it they will do their best to wiggle away. Teeth are always on the move, they want to move forward or back to where they were before you got those braces! For the first 3 to 6 months, you’ll want to wear that retainer all day. You can take it out whenever you need to brush or eat. After that, wearing it to sleep is advised. Our teeth aren’t runners so they won’t move very quickly, but if you’re skipping more than just a night or two, you might want to pop that retainer back in. While Gwinnett loves its orthodontists, you probably don’t want to have to go back to yours due to not wearing that retainer the right way.

Never go to bed without brushing! Don’t let all of the plaque hang around while you sleep, it will have hours to erode away at the enamel.

Beware of snacking! Sugar snacks and drinks can stain, erode and eat away at your teeth. Avoid this by brushing after meals.

Yes, you actually do need to floss. And honestly, probably more than once a day.

Fluoride might already be in the water supply, but by using it in toothpaste the possibility of tooth-decay declines. Got a tooth fairy visit coming up? Put the tooth in a little baggie, right under the center of the pillow. Don’t let it get lost!

SCHOOL IS IN SESSION AN INVESTMENT IN KNOWLEDGE PAYS THE BEST INTEREST. Benjamin Franklin had it right. Education is an important consideration. Choosing the best child care, preschool, private school or tutor will set the foundation for a child’s development. It’s important to every parent that their kid grows up with the right resources and is surrounded by educators who uplift their confidence and challenge their skills. Electing a higher education institute is just as important. If you’re deciding for yourself or your little one, Gwinnett county has everything you are looking for. GIFT EDUCATION: WHAT TEACHERS WANT OR DON’T PERSONALIZED PENCILS - Help teachers keep track of their

writing supplies by customizing them with their name (not yours).

SCHOOL SUPPLIES - These are often something that is paid for out of pocket, so from erasers to notebooks, we know they’ll appreciate it.

PLANTS - Make sure they are low maintenance, like succulents or snake plants. GIFT CARDS - Treat them to their favorite coffee shop, store or restaurant. ORNAMENTS - Give teachers something small to adorn their desks and workspaces, or if they celebrate Christmas make something for their trees.

MUGS - It seems like a great gift until everyone is giving one. They’ll appreciate it, but those cabinets are probably full. CANDLES - Same as the first, they’ve probably already got plenty. Anything scented is personal preference, so it’s better to skip it.

HOMEMADE FOOD - Don’t get it wrong, teachers love your little ones. They just also might know where their hands have been.

“TEACHER” THEMED - If it says #1 Teacher or is decorated with

apples and pencils, your teacher will probably prefer something a bit less corny.

LITTLE KIDS,

BIG ADVENTURES:

They’ve got their backpack on, lunches packed and outfits picked. They were babies just a minute ago and now they’re off to kindergarten. Nothing truly can prepare parents for this big day, but here’s some advice and tips to make it a bit easier to watch them board the bus. Focus on the fun! Being apart might cause a bit of separation anxiety. Tell kids to think of the new friends and new toys they’ll get to experience! Tell them how cool the crayons are going to be! It’s totally normal for everyone to be nervous, but it’s best to channel that into positive excitement. Don’t emphasize the emotions through a lengthy goodbye, plan ahead of time how the send off will go. Gwinnett has some of the best teachers who are sure to help kids on their first day! If possible, meet the teacher in advance so there’s a familiar face in the classroom. A routine is key, so practice getting up and getting ready the week before the big day. Arguably most important of all, don't forget to take a picture - you’re going to want to remember this!

SAVING TIPS AT ANY AGE

WE WORK HARD, and we want to enjoy the fruits of our labor. The temptation can be strong to spend money on extravagances for ourselves and others. But putting money aside for later means investing in our future, and it’s just smart

TEENS

Save money before you’re tempted to spend it. When you get cash for your birthday, from chores, or a job, put 10 percent in a savings account. Also, put spare change to use. When emptying your pockets at the end of the day, put some of the loose change in a jar or container. At the end of the month, put it all in a savings account at the bank.

MIDLIFE

In this phase, and we’re talking late 30s to late 50s, you should focus on retirement and your child’s college expenses (if applicable). It’s important to determine how to maximize your income during your remaining working years, so that you’re well-positioned for retirement. Do this by contributing to an IRA and/or a 401(k). Explore ways to save money for your children. Use a 529 plan or other savings account.

NEWLYWEDS

Have a candid talk with each other about finances. Set short-term and long-term goals. Talk about buying a home. Work through a monthly budget of expenses. Discuss whether or not you’d like to have a joint bank account or keep your earnings separate.

YOUNG ADULTS

Start saving now for long-term goals like a house, owning a business, or saving for retirement (it’s a long time off, but it’s never too early). Create a budget for yourself. It’s a good way to see where your money goes which can shape the way you spend it in the future. Get started building a good credit score by getting a credit card, spending wisely and paying it on time.

108

GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

AFTER YOU RETIRE

Time to reap your reward: visit places you’ve never seen, take up a new hobby, or spend more time with your loved ones. Being successful in retirement means you’ve got to make the most of your income and investments. Have your Social Security benefits, pension, and other income automatically deposited into your account each month. Consider a second career or working part time to boost your retirement income. Be careful with credit cards and monitor your accounts closely.

MONEY MINDSET

THEY SAY YOU CAN’T BUY HAPPINESS, but if you handed someone on the street a million dollars they would definitely be happy for the time being. What would you do with that money once you have it? We all say we would love to have $1 million dollars, but what would we even use it for? A boat? A mansion? Tickets to the Indy 500 or the UGA game? But if you strategize you could turn that million into a lot more in the future. The best savers have money mindsets, meaning they know the in and outs of spending. Knowing to stay away from things that depreciate in value very quickly is a good start. This isn’t to say that you should never spend your money (that $5 coffee once a week isn’t that big of a financial burden), but to look at it long term. And if you need help, Gwinnett’s got experts who’ve majored in money mindsets. Think about investing, setting up savings accounts or other ways to get more bang for your buck.

WE BET YOU CAN’T

name who’s on the ten dollar bill! We all know Washington is on the $1, Lincoln is on the $5 and Jackson is on the $20? But did you know Alexander Hamilton is on the $10? While he was never president, he was the first U.S. Secretary of Treasury.

SAVE THE BIG ONES IT SEEMS LIKE JUST YESTERDAY that homework and homecoming dates were our biggest headaches, but growing up happens faster than you think and with age comes bills. It’s time to teach your children valuable lessons about how to wisely save and spend money!

doesn’t spend any money for a certain amount of time, offer a small reward depending on what motivates them. great way to encourage your child to save extra!

BREAKDOWN THE DOLLAR SO… WHY CAN’T WE JUST PRINT MORE MONEY? What exactly does a dollar mean and do and where did the dollar even come from? Money has been around for quite awhile. Mesopotamia had the first currency, called “shekels”. But before currency, exchanging and bartering was just how things got done! From cowshells to coins to credit cards, money has evolved but never really changed. To make it simple, money is a store of value and medium of exchange. A paper dollar isn’t really worth anything on its own, it just represents value. A gold coin was worth more than a silver coin because it was made from gold, but a hundred dollar bill and a ten dollar bill are pretty much made of the same thing. We can all agree that we’d rather have the hundred though! That’s because we agree it has more value. Let’s say we printed millions of extra paper dollars. Now each dollar has less value because there’s too many of them. Why would we want your dollar for our cow when there’s millions of those dollar thingies floating around? Money only has value when we say so!

WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN:

You touch things throughout the day, meaning your hands are one of the easiest ways to transport germs to your mouth—and colds and viruses and everything else gunky that naturally follows suit.

STAY AWAY FROM THE SUGARS:

Sugar can be as addictive as alcohol and cigarettes and wreak havoc on your weight and skin, not to mention open the way for heart disease and diabetes. Limit your sweets!

SCREEN YOUR SCREEN TIME:

Too much time on the electronics can negatively affect your eyes and mental health. Especially avoid screen time before bed to get a good night’s sleep.

STOP FRETTING:

Stress can cause heart ailments, depression and insomnia, so stay away from the stressors!

HAVE A LOVE AFFAIR WITH VEGETABLES:

Eating the rainbow (no, not skittles—vegetables!) can give you numerous vitamins, nutrients and fiber, all of which promote good health and longevity.

WHY IS MY BABY SO BENDY? Remember when you could put your foot in your mouth? No, not in awkward dinner situations, but literally. For adults, it’s considered impressive, but for babies, it’s the norm! Babies and toddlers can handle it because they’re born flexible. The average adult has 206 bones (not including teeth). A baby is born with an impressive 300. As they grow, those bones will fuse together, but for now, they are bendy and squishy with cartilage. So, those little feet can reach their faces because have more bend in the knees. Baby kneecaps are made entirely from cartilage. Babies even come with their own super suits too, all that ‘baby fat’ is padding for their bodies.

YOU ARE

WHAT YOU EAT

Atkins, Ketogenic, Mediterranean. Hear the word “diet” and most people either cringe or make a beeline for the weight scale. But the dictionary definition for “diet” simply ecompasses to mean the foods we habitually eat. Whether trying to lose weight, attempting healthier choices or trying to maintain a healthy weight, there is a simple way a good diet can help you achieve any of these goals. First, pay attention to the way your food is cooked: opt for baked, air fried or broiled methods. Second, be wary of sodium and sugar. Both can bloat you and put you at greater risk of diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease. Third, opt for home-cooked meals to keep control over which ingredients are used and their quantities. Last, use a smaller plate for meals to keep control of portion sizes. If you must use a regular one, break it up into three portions and fill vegetables in half, and your protein and complex carbs in the remaining two ¼ portions. To satisfy sweet cravings, reach for seasonal fruits that are succulent and sweet in place of high and processed sugar alternatives. Also, wait twenty minutes after a meal before you eat more so your stomach has ample time to gauge true hunger or determine satiation. Remember, whatever it is you’re aiming for when it comes to your diet, everything is good and dandy—as long as it’s in moderation!

INSURANCE

I DIDN'T KNOW

I COULD INSURE THAT! MOST PEOPLE KNOW TO INSURE THE IMPORTANT STUFF, but there’s some real random stuff you can insure. Not that this stuff isn’t important, it’s just a bit less common!

PLANTS Have a prized plant in the house? Landscaping insurance might not cover it, get plant insurance!

FANTASY FOOTBALL

SMILE

While it might not apply to everybody, you can get specific body parts insured. Julia Roberts insured her smile and Gene Simmons insured his tongue!

UFO'S

If UFOs send you running for cover, fear not with alien abduction insurance.

BUTTON’S GUIDE to GWINNETT

It’s a minor fender bender. A bit of paint damage and a little dent in the back of the car. Seems like a simple fix, but without insurance it can get a whole lot trickier. If you’re at fault, those repairs on your car and whoever else’s vehicles are coming out of your pocket. They’ve been injured? You’ll be covering the medical bills too. Not to mention the civil suit you’ll be facing, you can’t drive without some form of auto insurance here in Georgia.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU DON’T

Insurance is one of those things you’ve gotta have, even if you never end up needing it. Life can be scary and insurance can be a shield against some of the worst things. Without it, life can be a whole lot costlier. Your home was broken into, and while thank God no one was hurt, they’ve broken a window and taken some valuable but replaceable items. No insurance? Repairs and replacements are coming out of pocket. Without health insurance, a broken toe can end up costing thousands of dollars in the long run. Insurance saves money in the long run, but it also insures a better peace of mind. Let our experts help you, so you don’t have to worry.

PLANNING INSTEAD OF

PROCRASTINATING

YOU MIGHT BE in the prime of your youth in your twenties, but it’s never too early to start thinking about life insurance. Hear us out! The younger and healthier you are, the less risk an insurer takes on your health, meaning insurance is more affordable. Of course, it’s never too late to buy insurance either, but planning is always better than procrastinating! Maybe you’ve got a kid who's just earned a driver’s license and is begging for the keys to the family car. Most states require some form of insurance, but you should always consider the plans and levels. Let’s face it, sixteen year olds aren’t the most experienced on the road. Some companies will leverage insurance if you’ve got a brainiac too, higher grades for lower rates! No one likes being sick, except maybe the school kid who wants to sleep in with a mild cold and miss that big exam. But health insurance is a must! Once you turn 26, you’re no longer covered by your parents, so make sure your job has a plan for you. If not, look into purchasing one for yourself and reference one of our helpers here in the guide!

THE LAWYERS EVERY BUSINESS NEEDS Business is complex. But with the right team of lawyers, you can stay in “business” and prevent a busy-mess. Here’s a list of lawyers to keep on hand:

GENERAL BUSINESS LAWYER

This is typically someone who focuses on the broad matters that impact business. They provide legal advice on many topics and in every legal discipline.

TAX LAWYER

Business taxes can get messy, that’s why a CPA can come in handy if your business ends up getting audited or a tax authority decides to take legal action against your business.

EMPLOYMENT AND LABOR LAWYER

If your business has employees, you’ll need to ensure you comply with all state and federal laws even as they change. An employment and labor lawyer can help here.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWYER

If you have trademarks and patents for your company, you’ll probably benefit from having an IP lawyer. This type of lawyer also makes sure you don’t infringe on the IP of others, which can help avoid issues and litigations in the long run.

CONTRACT LAWYER

When it comes to contracts, using templates you find on the internet could work but won’t cover things specific to your business, which is where a contract lawyer comes in handy.

I’M CALLING JUDGE JUDY! EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER, more glorified on TV. Take court cases for example, where judges admonish you the way only your great grandmother should or where plaintiffs and defendants take jabs at each other like sparring siblings. When it comes to court TV, there are quite a bit of places where reality begs to differ. On TV you’ll notice that the judge is often a stern, no-nonsense authority who incessantly bangs the gavel and orders attorneys to behave if they don’t want to find themselves in contempt of court. In reality, the gavel is barely used and the judge doesn’t dog on attorneys unless they exhibit egregious behavior. Opposing attorneys are at each other’s throats in courtroom TV, but in real life, attorneys have to work with each other over and over again, so they don’t take things personally and they try to maintain good relations with each other. Cases are solved much quicker on TV, because of course you won’t make your audience wait the years it sometimes takes to resolve serious cases. In real life, plaintiffs and defendants don’t always show up pristinely dressed in crisp clothes. Most courts post signs about dress code at the entrance to warn against saggy pants, visible undergarments, and other inappropriate court wear. So the next time you’re admiring the clout or power of a courtroom TV show, remember to take it with a grain of salt!

MAYBE DON'T REPRESENT YOURSELF IN COURT FLYING THROUGH A RED SIGNAL WHEN A COP IS NEARBY. Going twenty miles over the speed limit in a school zone. Know what’s stupider than both of those? Representing yourself in court! Although it might be tempting to save some hard-earned “moolah,” especially with inflation being sky high, representing yourself can be a mindless decision for several reasons. Because you don’t have the courtroom chops of a lawyer or as in-depth knowledge of the legal system as they do, you also won’t have a complete understanding of your legal rights. If you’re in the courtroom, it’s likely you’re on the line for something where the stakes are high and you can’t risk losing. The dollars saved from selfrepresenting won’t be worth the fines for your likely legal loss. When you’re representing yourself, it’s harder to prevent emotions from taking over whereas an unaffected third party can do a better job of staying calm, focused and therefore more impactful in fighting your case. Got a jury? You’ve got even more reason to be nervous—because with juries, first impressions are of paramount importance. You don’t want to come across as unprepared, weak or flustered, which is where an experienced lawyer can add value. Finally, in the event you’re given a plea bargain, where you’ll need to plead guilty in return for a reduced charge and better sentence, a lawyer will know best about how to negotiate and what comprises a good and fair deal. So no matter how tempting it is to pocket the money and step up in front of the judge—resist the urge, and go buy yourself a fighting chance at justice.

ATTORNEY VS. LAWYER VS. PARALEGAL

IT HAPPENS MORE

YOU’VE LIKELY HEARD THE TERMS attorney, lawyer and paralegal tossed around like spring salad in any law-related discussion. But what’s the difference between them? It’s actually not as complicated as it may seem. Let’s start with attorneys versus paralegals. The most significant difference between the two relates to the level of education and licensing required. Attorneys have to both attend and graduate from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, pass a state background check and also the bar exam. After that, they get sworn in and must pay annual fees and take ongoing education classes to keep their license active.

ATTORNEYS MAY SEEM superfluous and even a waste of money and time, but they add more value than most people give them credit for. Here’s a list of common reasons why people hire attorneys:

Paralegals have it easier. Some states have optional paralegal certification programs. Often paralegals are simply people hired by attorneys to research and draft legal documents and help with the daily operations of law firms. But they can’t represent clients in court or prepare legal documents that aren’t approved by an attorney. As far as the terms attorney and lawyer are concerned, for the most part they’re interchangeable. However, a small technical difference between the two is that a lawyer is someone who has studied the law whereas an attorney is someone who has the license to practice law and represent clients. In recognition of this confusion and to prevent malpractice, the ABA and state bars have rules that prevent those who aren’t licensed by the bar to go by either of these titles. Now that you know the differences, you’re all set to boast your law-ful knowledge to your friends!

THAN YOU THINK CUSTODY:

One of the messiest parts of a divorce is figuring out who will maintain primary custody of children and how much alimony should be paid. Attorneys can mediate and also represent your points well in court.

DIVORCE:

One of the most painful events in life can also be a nightmare when you’re forced to tie up loose ends (such as selling your home) with someone you’d rather never see again. An attorney can help things go smoothly and fight for a fair settlement.

ADOPTION:

If you’re looking to adopt, there’s lots of documentation and procedures involved. Attorneys can help with the formalities and also answer questions you have.

PERSONAL INJURY:

If you’re hurt because of someone else’s negligence and want to sue, an attorney can add great value by knowing the statute of limitations and details related to successfully filing. Subsequently, if you’re the one being taken to court for a personal injury, an attorney can help reduce penalties and potential prison time.

WILL:

If you’re creating a will, a lawyer can ensure this process happens within the bounds of laws and regulations and that your will is clear and isn’t the cause of confusion or misunderstanding later.

The classics. If they’re travel sized toiletries, they’re up for grabs. These are usually tossed by the hotel after a visit for sanitary reasons.

A good rule of thumb is branding. If it feels like a light and cheaper pen with the hotel logo, it’s probably okay to take. It’s free advertising.

If it’s been opened, take it. If it’s individual packets that haven’t been touched, best to leave it for the next guest.

HOTEL, MOTEL, HOLIDAY INN? Hotel, motel? To-may-toe, to-mah-toe? Not exactly, a hotel and motel are different! They both serve as places for people to stay when traveling or for whatever reason, but there’s a few things they don’t have in common. Motel actually comes from combining motor and hotel. They’ve long served as places for motorists, since their doors don’t have interior hallways and usually face the parking lot. Motels are a bit American, popping up beside highways since the 1920s and onward. While a hotel will have a couple stories, a motel will usually only have one or two. A motel probably won’t have amenities like continental breakfast, but it may have a pool!

SIZE

WHY ARE BIG THINGS IN TINY VERSIONS just so much fun? We love little toiletries we can throw in our bags or mini jams we can take from breakfast buffets. Travel sized items just pack a big punch for being in such tiny packages. But there’s more to tiny items than you’d think, in fact there’s a world of small sized fun beyond hotel shampoos. Here are some bite sized items to buy next time you’re going away.

WATER BOTTLES

if you’re planning on going somewhere hot, but you don’t want a massive bottle in your bag, they make collapsable bottles just for the occasion!

WASHING DETERGENTS

these are great for business trips to avoid worries about crinkled clothing or not having enough clean undershirts.

UMBRELLA

umbrellas can be big and bulky to carry around, but a mini one will fit right into your carry-on in case it is raining when the plane lands.

STRAIGHTENER

sometimes the hotel dryer won’t cut it, luckily they make travel size hair straighteners (and curlers!) for your destination celebrations

LIKE A PRO

YOU’VE GOT A BIG TRIP COMING UP. Maybe it’s a business trip or maybe it’s a honeymoon, either way the first thing to do is pack. So what are the items that you should triple check before leaving?

CHARGERS - laptop, phone, apple products, double check!

SHOES - a pair for work and a pair for fun. UNDERWEAR - always bring extra. JACKET - check the weather, but bring it just in case. SWIMSUIT - the hotel might have a pool. SPECIAL TOILETRIES - anything the hotel can’t

provide you.

SHOPPIN’ ABOUT

EVER HEARD THE EXPRESSION “SHOP TIL YOU DROP”? Gwinettians certainly have. With dozens of stores, malls and shops lining our streets, you’ll never be in need of anything. For the trendsetters and the classic comfort style folks, there’s bound to be a store tailored to you. If you need something to spruce up dinner, fix your fence or just refresh your space there’s plenty of options. Savvy shoppers, try our local antique stores that might have a history find or eclectic item.

HOW OFTEN

SHOULD I BUY...?

MATTRESS SHOWER LINER You can only ignore

those black blotches at the bottom of your liner for so long. Replace it at least every six months and clean it every two or three!

A good mattress lasts about a decade. Yup, that mattress should be replaced every ten years or so.

KITCHEN SPONGES TOOTH BRUSHES

Most dentists recommend getting a new toothbrush every three to four months, but if you’ve been a bit sick lately it’s best to get a new one once you feel better.

156

GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

Think about it, all that food bacteria has to go somewhere and it’s not all washing down the sink. Keep it clean and replace those sponges at least once every two weeks.

CUTTING BOARD

If your board has a lot of knife marks, it’s time to chop it from the kitchen routine. Bacteria can gather in scratches, best to get a new one.

DECLUTTER YOUR CLOSET

We’re all guilty of it. Holding onto that random shirt we’ll never wear or keeping those 10 year old sports trophies. While there’s nothing wrong with holding onto what's sentimental, sometimes we find ourselves a bit buried in the clutter. Don’t let the looming mountains of random storage overwhelm you. It’s time to declutter your way out! Start with ten minutes at a time. You can declutter a little everyday by clearing your flat surfaces and putting items where they go. Look through your stuff and ask yourself “do I really need this?” If it’s something you forgot you had, something you know deep down you’ll never use or something that’s been so used you can use it no longer - it’s time for you to part ways. A clutter free home will lead to less stress, a cleaner environment and better organization. Consider getting rid of one item a day and by the end of the year that’s 365 items! Chances are, if you don’t really need it, someone else might! If the items are still mint, drop them off at your local donation center! Having a clean environment increases productivity, not to mention it gets rid of all those dust bunnies.

THE CYCLE OF FASHION

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND! Did you know the fashion cycle has five stages? And you’re probably more familiar with them than you think! A style is introduced, then it increases and gains momentum and, before you know it, it’s at the peak of fashion. Trends like chevron print a few years ago or track suits in the 90s, they’re a topic of talk and then before you know it, everyone from celebrities to your next door neighbor is wearing it. But once these styles have reached the top, they eventually have to come back down. This is the decline. After that the style is gone and no more. At least, until it comes back again. Think of it like fashion recycling! This goes for fashionable hairstyles too. Sounds strange to say that kids are getting mullets and 80’s style blow-outs like Farrah Fawcet, but it’s true! So if your favorite trend is losing fashion favor, you just gotta be patient and wait another decade or two.

THRIFT STORE CELEBRITIES IF YOU’RE AN AVID BARGAIN HUNTER, a fashion enthusiast looking for a unique piece or a Dad trying to find some furniture, then the local thrift store might be your haven. From totally vintage pieces to incomparable deals, thrift stores are a staple in the shopping economy. Thrift shopping is both a challenge and an accomplishment. It’s good for the environment too! Thrifting helps reduce your carbon footprint, it can stimulate the local economy and it gets you an item no one else will have. (Save for the last owner!) Antique stores house quirky collections of items, some that have a history that’s cooler than the item itself. Consignment stores and boutiques often have fashion finds from all around, allowing you to have something more unique than what other stores might sell. The key to being a thrifty thrifter? Patience. Take time to look around these stores and visit them every few weeks, you never know when someone is dropping off your future favorite outfit or item!

FOR YOUR FURRY FRIENDS

NO MATTER IF IT’S FINS, SCALES, BEAKS OR FUR, Gwinnett loves its animals. Pets love us unconditionally. Our furry friends are like our furry family, and they deserve the best. Make sure your pet has the best of care with Gwinnett’s pet and animal services. Do you need a special treat or custom collar? Is it time for a bath and grooming? Maybe it’s time to expand your family with another four-legged member? Consult our guide and you’ll know you and your pet are in good hands!

PET & ANIMAL SERVICES

SHARING A PLATE Us people and pets have a lot more in common than we may think, including some of our favorite snacks! Here’s some things Gwinnettians can share with their doggos.

CARROTS

That crunch is hard to resist! Carrots are good for the eyes human and dog.

WHITE RICE

This can actually be a cure to an upset stomach or a base for other treats.

FISH

Next time you cook salmon for dinner, leave a portion for your pet! High in omega-3s everyone benefits from some fish. Don’t share sushi though, dogs can’t consume fish raw.

166

GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

PEANUT BUTTER

Dogs are the peanut butter to our jelly, our perfect match. As long as it doesn’t contain sweetener replacements (xylitol), feel free to share a spoon.

BLUEBERRIES

Add some color to their diet! Blueberries have all the pet-friendly antioxidants and provide a sweet treat. They’re a doggo dessert!

DOG FOODS

Technically, yes, these are people safe. We know you’ve always wanted to try a scooby-snack…

PET & ANIMAL SERVICES

DOES MY DOG ACTUALLY KNOW

WHAT I’M SAYING?

IT’S HARD TO SAY if pets actually know they are a good boy or just like the tone of our voice when we tell them. Think of our distant gorilla relatives who can communicate with sign, they seem to have an understanding of language! Many animals can recognize human languages. It’s thought that our furry friends do understand us to a degree. They understand tone of voice, pitch and even specific sounds can be recognized as words. But this doesn’t mean that you and your pet lizard will be having deep conversations about life anytime soon. While some animals have a basic grasp of what we are saying, they do not recognize words as we do. Frodo’s little head tilt isn’t because he is pondering your questions, more likely it’s because he is trying to better see, better hear or be more engaged. It’s hard to really grasp animal comprehension when they can’t explain it to us, but who knows? Maybe one day you and your cat can talk about just how much you both don’t like the smell of litter together!

PET & ANIMAL SERVICES

MUST HAVE PET TOYS Every pet is different, but here are some toys that might be popular with yours!

RABBITS Rabbits like toys they can chew, scratch at or even toss around. These foragers will rejoice at bins filled with shredded paper to dig in. They also love pretty much anything cardboard, even better if it’s filled with treats!

BIRDS

CATS

Catnip toys are a classic, but try a feather wand to tune into those kitty instincts. Or honestly, maybe just give them the box, they always seem to love those!

Birds love to destroy things, but in a productive way! Give them something they can pick at that's non-toxic. Materials such as untreated wood and natural fiber rope are great choices!

DOGS

LIZARDS

While they may sleep a lot, they can still get bored. Give reptilian friends something to do with fixtures to climb. If you’ve got a bearded dragon try a crinkle ball or hanging bell!

Tennis balls are good in theory, but for some dogs they tear them right up! Aim for an indestructible toy, like a Kong. Another great choice is learning toys. Try puzzle boards filled with treats to make it an interactive activity!

HORSES

What’s a horse without a jolly ball? This equine favorite is safe in any stable or try a slowfeeding treat ball for a game and a snack.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN

LEAVING YOUR PET BEHIND

Decide if your pet should have a staycation at home, a sleepover with a friend, a stay at doggy hotels or just bring ‘em along! Staycation - Clear the counters, take away temptations and make sure there’s nothing that could be an issue while you’re gone. When left alone, sometimes our pets get anxiety and that could cause them to get into trouble around the home. Pet Safe - If your pet will be staying at a friend’s house, make sure they know your pet well and don’t forget to bring all of your pet’s supplies. Whoever is having your pet over should know feeding times, walk times and what your pet likes to do! Boarding - Go over any medications with the staff, as well as any quirks your pet may have. Consider leaving behind their favorite toy or a blanket that smells like you wherever they’re staying, that way it will feel a bit more like you are still with them! Bring ‘em - is your vacation four-legged friend compatible? Check in with where you are staying, as well as considering your transportation plans, and see if they can accommodate your pal. Make sure you bring your pets foods, medicines and playthings so you can have the best vacation together.

SPORTS & REC

WHAT THE SPORT YOU PLAY SAYS ABOUT YOU In Georgia, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't participate in one sport or another. The sport you prefer to play says quite a bit about you!

FOOTBALL

At the snap of the ball, you've more than shown your resilience in the face of opposition. You’re adaptable and determined to prevail.

BASEBALL

Hey batter, batter! It's your swing of the bat that truly demonstrates your potential for forethought. You’re accurate and anticipating.

TENNIS

Rallying back and forth across the court, you hit one over the net and score a forty. You’re energetic and motivated.

HOCKEY BASKETBALL Slammed into the side wall,

Venture a three-point shot! Always eyeing opportunities around you, you’re nimble and quickthinking.

LACROSSE

You manage to seize the ball, focus on your target and shoot it into the net for the win. Always up for a challenge, you’re precise and coordinated. 172 GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

you recover, shake off the haze, and press on. You’re tenacious and tough.

SOCCER

Dribbling the ball, you break past the defense and send it sailing over the goalie. You’re agile and collaborative.

EVERYTHING I NEEDED TO KNOW,

I LEARNED IN LITTLE LEAGUE

LITTLE LEAGUE IS A BUILDING BLOCK for lots of children. You learn how to swing a bat, albeit at a tee ball stand. You learn how to share your popcorn or goldfish with your teammates. You learn that your team won’t always win just because you want to. Little League teaches little and big lessons. While chewing bubble gum and hitting bunts we learn about persistence. We learn that we have to work hard for what we want to achieve. While we dirty our knees in infield and get grass in our hair in the outfield, we learn that everyone makes mistakes. Little League taught us that winning isn’t everything. It taught us that we should always have our teammates' backs. Parents learn from Little League too. They learn that yelling won’t change outcomes and that sometimes kids just want to have fun. Coaches learn that even the rowdiest of groups can pull it together in the end. Everyone learns that they should take advantage of sunny days and good weather. Little League is more than just a tiny version of baseball, it’s an opportunity to set the foundation for the ups and downs of life.

Are you maybe a bit competitive, but love working as a team? Team sports are great because anyone can play, no matter their level!

TEAM PLAYER TACTICS There’s no bonding like team bonding and there’s no “I” in “TEAM”. These may be quotes coaches and Dads say when the soccer game is cutting it close, but there’s some real wisdom here. Teamwork leads to better collaborative problem solving and better relationships for both kids and adults. Many team sports help kids develop social skills and improve their self confidence. In fact, playing team sports can lead to better stress and pressure management later in life. So playing soccer as a kindergartner might help alleviate some of that tension in the business office! Team sports also teaches that games (and life) aren’t always fair! Losing can be tough, but with a team it’s a little easier to share in the woes together. Defeats shouldn’t weigh you down and teammates will help build you back up. Gwinnettians of all ages can join in the team sports lifestyle, from children’s leagues to adult recreation there is no better time to start than now!

DECODING

THE DRESS CODE CASUAL

Casual means whatever works for you, within reason of course (no bathing suits to a business lunch). This is as no dress code as the dress code gets! (Simplest)

SMART CASUAL

This is casual, but elevated. Think along the lines of pressed shirts, casual dresses and nice shoes, no sneakers. (Simple)

178 GUIDETOGWINNETT.COM

BUSINESS CASUAL

Business casual calls for khakis, polos and buttondowns or dresses, casual skirts and blouses. (Simple)

BUSINESS

Get out those ties. This is what you would wear in an office. Modest colors, professional styles and posh clothing choices reign here. (Fancy)

SEMI- FORMAL (COCKTAIL)

Dark suits and toned down colors. Dresses should be shorter, not floor length, and feel free to accessorize. Think sophisticated, but not too fancy! (Fancy)

FORMAL

Elegant dresses, traditional suits, or even pant suits. Formal indicates somewhere between cocktail and black tie, meaning you can’t be overdressed so it’s better to dress it up rather than down. (Fancy)

BLACK TIE

This is dressing to the nines. Don your formal gowns, usually floor-length and often an elevated material. Tuxedos should be accompanied by bow ties, black vests or cummerbunds and shoes should be polished and dark in color as well. Oh, and no clip-ons. (Fanciest)

GUIDE TO GWINNETT // COMMUNITY SERVICES

ON’S GUIDE TO COMM U N SERVICEITY S BUTT

WHAT WE CARE ABOUT WE ALL KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE

to feel like life is kicking us when we’re already down. During those troublesome times we feel an urge to help those we care about. That’s why charities and religious organizations play such a vital role. They serve as central places where people from all walks of life can gather to contribute their services for the greater good and build strong relationships with those around them. If you are in need, don’t be afraid to ask for help. From charities to religious organizations, Gwinnett is full of opportunities to collaborate with kind people and provide your services for the betterment of the community. So, where will you lend a helping hand this year?

GIVING,KINDNESS AND HUMANITY IN HISTORY

The act of giving has literally been around since the dawn of time. Philanthropy is derived from the Greek, philanthropia, which means to love people, or love humanity. Throughout history we as people have worked to be kinder, from soup kitchens in ancient China to support for soldiers in World War II, we have always found a place in our hearts to be generous. For some societies, religion has been a motivator. All religions emphasize the common idea of treating people with kindness. For others, charity came from the idea of public good. Another train of thought? We’ve evolved to do so. Our ability to cooperate and our humanitarianism is what keeps us going! We function better when we prioritize communities. The ancient Romans considered philanthropy to be an obligation. The Ancient Hebrews practiced a tithe, or a tax to ensure the poor had help. In today’s times, we focus more on a systematic giving to promote the welfare of others. Compassion is hardwired and lending a helping hand is something we all should do, whatever the reason why.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

THE LOVE OF GIVING GENEROSITY HELPS ALL! HERE ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF GIVING BACK.

EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS

Donations don’t have to end with a dozen zeros. Charities benefit from donations in all sizes, and so do they people they help.

PEACE OF MIND AND PEACE FOR ALL

By donating time or giving to charity, you’ll feel a little bit lighter. The satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped someone can make you feel like you are satisfying that purpose in life.

TAX BENEFITS

No, it’s not the most selfless reason on this list, but it is still important. Donating allows you to use your money in a way that benefits you too.

ANOTHER BENEFIT

Especially for students, is the resume boost. By donating time, you are adding another achievement to your list, but this one can do some real good for your community.

YOU’LL RAISE AWARENESS

The attention you bring to a good cause can be just as vital as anything else. By spreading awareness, you’ll encourage others to do the same.

WHAT MATTERS TO YOU?

Pick a cause that is close to your heart and make a difference it what you believe in.

BUTTON'S GUIDE to GWINNETT

DONATING DO’S AND DON’TS

YOU WANT TO DONATE. That’s wonderful! But before you start creating your donation box or care bag, there’s some important aspects of donating to consider. The items needed most are often the items we least consider, or we don’t consider all aspects. Canned goods, for example, make a wonderful donation. But when they come without a “poptop”, it can be hard for someone in need to be able to open them. Or bar soap, for example, doesn’t travel well. When donating to the those facing homelessness or hunger, make sure you do some research first.

PLAYGROUNDS 101

Playgrounds have seen their fair share of change in the past hundred years. Wood chips have been replaced with rubber mulch and metal slides with soft winding plastics. What hasn’t changed? The rules. Yes, playground etiquette is a thing. Rules like “no running” and “shoes required” are set to protect children from injuries. Another common rule: age requirements. We know parents want to keep their kids safe and there’s nothing wrong with a watchful eye, but at playgrounds it is best that parents stay on the sidelines. Even if the jungle gym looks great, it's better to watch from the bench. If a playground brawl breaks out, it’s best to keep a level head and mediate only when necessary. You want to minimize intervention as playing is a way for children to learn cooperation and work things out themselves! Kids should take turns with the equipment and be mindful of others. Explain to your kids that some of the other children may not be able to stay as long or come as often, so sharing is the best way to play! Gwinnett’s got plenty of swings and slides, so if the weather’s nice, head on out and find them!

WATERWORKS

With 50 parks, residents are just minutes away from enjoying the many activities offered by Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation

While we may not be known for it, Gwinnett certainly has some spots for the water enthusiasts. Lake Lanier is great for those hoping to get out on a boat, tube or jetski for a while. Don’t forget about the waterpark for those who like a bit more chlorine in their water. With the Chattahoochee River running through, there’s lots of spots for fishing. Local parks usually have a pier or wading water to get your reel on, just make sure it’s an area that’s okay. Not a swimmer, but a splasher? Kids and adults alike will love Gwinnett’s splash pads. Head to Sugar Hill Splash Park, the Suwanee Town Center and many more for some fun. If you love being on the water, but still staying kind of dry, you can canoe or kayak in more of Gwinnett’s great parks! So if your land legs are looking to get wet, there’s no shortage of options!

PAVILION

G R E AT P A R K S

PARTIES

SO THE KIDS WANT A PARTY IN THE PARK. And you can’t blame them. With Gwinnett’s gorgeous green spaces and cool playgrounds, a pavilion is a great place to host a party. Outdoor gatherings come with challenges, though. If you’re looking to avoid trekking long distances with a cooler and birthday gifts in tow, opt for a park that has a pavilion close to the entrance. Another note, it is always good to double check if the specific place you want to party needs reservations. We don’t want to have families brawling over table space! For food and drinks, make sure they’re park friendly. Go for easily transportable snacks and hand-held drinks instead of punch bowls. If barbecue is in your plans, make sure it’s something you’ll have the time and resources for. While pavilions do come with the great outdoors, sometimes your guests might want more to do than swing. Make sure you bring a ball, a game or plan some extra activities like cornhole!
