Every year, I love reading Gwinnett Magazine’s Best of Gwinnett issue. There is so much in our community to take pride in and enjoy. In Gwinnett County government, we talk a lot about the Gwinnett Standard. It simply means that we do things the right way. We build to last. We don’t cut corners. In Gwinnett, standard does not mean average or basic, it means excellent. In these pages, the “best of ” includes our national award-winning parks, our recreation programs, our comprehensive library system and our environmental and sustainability programs. Plus, we are named Best Employer. But all that just scratches the surface of what Gwinnett offers. The pandemic taught us to be more innovative than usual in our service delivery. The past few years stressed our public safety, transit and health and human services operations. But our elaborate efforts to protect the public and our County employees earned a “Healthiest Employers” honor from the Atlanta Business Chronicle last year. As COVID-19 and its variants churned through our community, we continued to provide clean drinking water, improved roads and intersections and long-term economic development projects to ensure jobs for our steadily growing population. Those projects include redeveloping Gwinnett Place Mall and gateway sites on I-85 in Norcross and U.S. 78 near Stone Mountain.
Gwinnett County proactively bought 2,000 acres on the eastern edge of the county for the Rowen knowledge community that is expected to eventually attract 100,000 jobs in the agricultural, medical and environmental industries. The Water Tower at Gwinnett research facility capitalizes on our world-class expertise in water treatment technologies and is already attracting researchers from both start-ups and well-established companies worldwide. All of this makes Gwinnett County a great place to live, work, play and raise a family. Gwinnett is not only vibrantly connected – we’re also resilient. Throughout the last two years, our local economy has stayed strong, ready to flourish and grow. The new Gwinnett Entrepreneur Center is now open and guiding its first cohort of startup business owners. And as the pandemic hopefully continues to subside, we will once again attend concerts, professional sports and conventions and support our favorite local restaurants and retailers in evergreater numbers. AUBURN Haven’t you always wondered why a small town in Georgia was named Auburn? It has nothing to do with that Alabama village on the plains… Rather, our Auburn was named for something distinctly Georgian – the famous red clay that was once used to dye cloth auburnred. Founded in 1892, Auburn now counts over 7,000 residents and has retained its small-town atmosphere while focusing on increasing business and boosting quality of life factors for residents. The city’s planned green spaces along with a mix of single-family homes, townhomes and apartments make Auburn an attractive place for folks looking for a place to call home. Auburn is known for a familyfriendly atmosphere reflected in events like its annual Auburn Ever After, AuburnFest, weekly farmer’s markets and movies in Whistlestop Park – a unique shopping district. The city also has five beautiful parks and a family sports complex. On the economic front, Auburn is a certified Main Street Community, has an active Downtown Development Authority and welcomes new businesses with incentives through its Opportunity Zone. Oh... And one more thing that’s uniquely Auburn? The town is shared by Gwinnett and Barrow counties. Told you they were friendly.

BERKELEY L AKE People often ask, “What's so great about Berkeley Lake?” … because they have gathered this vague perception that it’s a special place. They generally expect to hear about the pristine 88-acre lake at the center of the city and the climax hardwood forest, wildlife, natural beauty, etc. It’s true that it's a beautiful and peaceful oasis in the suburban sprawl, but there are even more significant factors for those who live there. People who come rarely leave, because people in this small city look after each other. It feels like a small town with the assets of a nearby metropolitan area easily accessible. Berkeley Lake has been a Tree City for many years, but it’s also certified as a Compassionate City. People know and care for each other and their business partners, many of whom live in the city. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “In addition to being the No. 3 best place to buy a house, Berkeley Lake was No. 2 of 453 best places to raise a family in Georgia and No. 2 of 164 for best suburbs to raise a family.” Berkeley Lake is one of the least expensive places to do business in Gwinnett County, if not the entire metro area. The business-friendly city has a freeport exemption, low occupation taxes and low property taxes. Staff provides quick turnaround of building permits as well as business licenses.

BR ASELTON When you’re driving north on I-85, you’ll know you’re in Braselton when the stunning vineyard of Château Élan Winery & Resort rises into view. The resort has set the tone for top-quality development, which can be seen in every detail of the surrounding town. Braselton's population has tripled since 2000 to more than 12,000 residents. People are flocking to Braselton because they can find beautiful neighborhoods tucked into the countryside with access to major state highways, a thriving medical community, walking trails, restaurants and a historic downtown. It’s easy to get around Braselton. Residents ride the free trolley to and from local restaurants and the winery. Golf carts buzz along the LifePath, a multi-use sidewalk that connects residents with shopping and dining. A downtown parking deck makes it easy to visit the farmers market, boutiques, antique shops, lunch spots and nightlife, as well as seasonal festivals and concerts. Braselton is at the crossroads of several transportation corridors that lead to Atlanta, Athens and Greenville, which has proven to be a logistical advantage for industrial warehouses and major companies along GA 124 and GA 53. In addition, Northeast Georgia Medical Center opened a first-class hospital in Braselton in 2015, spurring extensive growth of healthcare services along the GA 347 corridor. These developments have provided thousands of jobs for Braselton and the surrounding area. Though Braselton is growing rapidly, the Town Council manages its growth in a way that fosters the small-town feel and history that makes Braselton unique.

BUFORD Buford never cultivated that sleepy Southern town vibe. In fact, way back in 1902, Buford was referred to as the “New York City of Gwinnett” thanks to its industry and activity. Even back in the day, this city that was founded in 1872 as a depot on the railway line between Atlanta and Charlotte was known for being progressive in business and education. Buford was home to the county’s first bank and was widely recognized for its quality schools—so much so that students traveled from adjoining counties to earn a prestigious Buford High School diploma. (No change there, Buford City Schools are still esteemed and attract many non-residents!) Today, with more than 16,000 citizens, Buford is a city that has it all–a charming main street with retailers and restaurants and one of the Southeast’s top shopping destinations with the Mall of Georgia. The Buford Dam is a major power source for the state and Lake Lanier Islands is recognized as a premier recreation development— and a favorite summer destination for Gwinnettians. The Buford Community Center is another jewel for the city, boasting a theater, conference center, meeting spaces, the Buford Museum and the popular Town Park that hosts entertainment for all ages. And here’s a little Buford trivia for you... Whose statue is located on West Main Street? The legendary Western film star, Roy Rogers, whose horse Trigger had a saddle made at Buford’s historic Bona Allen Tannery.

DACUL A Ever wonder how Dacula (and that’s pronounced duhcue-la) was named? Founded in 1905, Dacula originated from the letters found in Decatur and Atlanta. Today, with a growing population over 6,000, Dacula provides a unique smalltown experience to residents and visitors alike and prides itself on being an inclusive community. Dacula’s location provides residents many advantages, particularly for employment and education opportunities. In fact, Dacula is located at the center of Georgia’s Innovation Crescent, a 15-county economic development hub focused on life sciences and technology that includes Gwinnett. Other bragging rights for Dacula? Its influence on bluegrass and other music genres. Little known fact — Dacula is the home of Gid Tanner and his 1920s and 1930s Skillet Lickers string band. The string band is still going strong with the Tanner family and performs in Dacula and around the area regularly.

GR AYSON Today, Grayson is a sought-after address and a city with loads of Southern charm and livability. In fact, the city has received a Live, Work, Play City Award presented by the Georgia Municipal Association. Grayson gets high marks for excellent schools, sports programs, parks, restaurants and shopping. With the town’s new Ampavilion, Grayson hosts the Gimme Shelter Benefit Concert, Moonshiner’s Music Fest and a number of familyfriendly community events throughout the year, including free concerts, movies, Shakespeare in the Park and more. The Grayson Day Parade is a particularly popular event among the town’s 4,400+ residents.

L AWRENCEVILLE Named after naval commander Captain James Lawrence and incorporated in 1821, Lawrenceville has impressive credentials as the county seat and the second-oldest city in Metro Atlanta. Lawrenceville’s original town square remains the heart of downtown and the iconic courthouse is a landmark recognized throughout the county. In the early days, it was a great challenge to keep livestock from trampling the courthouse lawn. Today, the courthouse and its grounds are the site for weddings, special events and community gatherings. Lawrenceville’s downtown, referred to as The DTL, continues to grow and develop as a go-to destination for shopping, dining and entertainment—and more than a few film and TV productions. (We see you, Ozark!) This vibrant area includes the Aurora Theatre, an ever-growing list of locally owned restaurants, Slow Pour Brewing Company—Gwinnett’s first craft brewery—and the Depot District’s latest addition, Ironshield Brewing, Georgia’s fifth-largest brewery. The downtown square is the site of a range of popular events and festivals, including St. Paddy’s on Perry, Oktoberfest, Free Comic Book Day, the Hometown Christmas Parade and the Lawrenceville Ghost Tours. In late 2020, the City added festive permanent lighting to the trees surrounding the historic square. The Lawrenceville Lawn, just a block off the square, is the site of the annual Concerts on the Lawn series and a host of other events throughout the year. The Lawn recently underwent a $1.8 million renovation to add a permanent amphitheater, arbor shades, tables, additional bathrooms and parking. In 2021, the City of Lawrenceville celebrated its bicentennial year. Gwinnett’s county seat has accomplished a great deal in 200 years! Enhancing quality of life for visitors and its over 30,000 residents remains a constant priority for city leaders. The city just opened its new $35 million Lawrenceville Arts Center that serves as the new home of the Aurora Theatre! LILBURN Like many Georgia cities, Lilburn’s development was rooted in the railroad. First incorporated in 1910, the town was named for Lilburn Trigg Myers, the railroad superintendent for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, and trains still run hourly through Old Town. Today, Old Town Lilburn is a growing downtown neighborhood that reflects small town charm with treelined streets and sidewalks. Downtown development is thriving as new businesses and homes are springing

up, and nearby Lilburn City Park is the site of endless community activities and the start of the four-mile Camp Creek Greenway trail. Concerts, Sparkle in the Park, Lilburn Daze and the annual Christmas Parade are just a few of the events that draw visitors in to join the more than 13,500 residents that call Lilburn home. They must be smart folks – the Spring 2021 issue of Newcomer Magazine listed Lilburn as one of Atlanta’s most popular communities.

LOGANVILLE Land Lot No. 186, you’ve come a long way! James Harvie Logan purchased that lot, which became the first 62.5 acres of Loganville, for only $150. Loganville was first incorporated in 1887, and around the turn of the century would become the last stop on the railroad from Atlanta to Lawrenceville. Today, Loganville’s city limits are split between Gwinnett and Walton counties. (We don’t mind sharing.) The town “Where People Matter” counts more than 13,000 residents, and couples growth and
progress with a warm community atmosphere. The Loganville Town Green draws folks to the city center for a busy calendar of events that includes AutumnFest, the Groovin’ on the Green Summer Concert Series, an annual Tree Lighting and Christmas Parade. With three state highways traversing the city, Loganville offers a unique business climate that includes large retail and restaurant chains combined with niche and locally owned shopping and dining experiences.

NORCROSS Once known as “Atlanta’s Favorite Summer Resort,” Norcross was named for Jonathan Norcross, Atlanta’s fourth mayor. Today’s residents, some 16,000+, would have no trouble believing that Norcross has been a favorite destination for much of its 150-year existence. Norcross, Gwinnett’s second-oldest city, was the county’s first to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. With a rich variety of well-preserved historic homes and an authentic turn-of-the-century downtown district, Norcross leaders have sought to blend old and new with great vision. The area has even been the backdrop for several film projects. The historic downtown area is full of shopping, dining and entertainment options for residents and visitors alike. The Norcross Downtown Development Authority is focused on fostering a strong and progressive business climate. The city is excited to celebrate the recent opening of a brand-new Crowne Plaza hotel and a new Norcross branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library. Two new modern apartment communities, The Brunswick and Broadstone Junction, are also leasing now near downtown Norcross. Thrasher Park and Lillian Webb Park are the site of scores of family events. Norcross has a thriving arts community and its own Lionheart Theatre community theater company. There’s even a Norcross Walking Group for residents with a pep in their step. Norcross is well-known for their bold sustainability initiatives and accomplishments in adopting and developing green living programs. The city is proud to be recognized as a Platinum Green Community – the highest rating possible – by the Atlanta Regional Commission. Norcross is one of only three cities to achieve this rating and is dedicated to continuing this action for the betterment of their community and the environment.

PE ACHTREE CORNERS Incorporated in 2012, Peachtree Corners is Gwinnett County’s newest and largest city and is home to more than 43,000 residents. While Peachtree Corners is young as an official city, the community was actually planned in the late 1960s and 70s. Businessman Paul Duke envisioned a place where residents could live, work and play without long commutes, placing Technology Park, a campus of high-technology buildings, at its heart. Today, Peachtree Corners continues to emphasize business innovation as home of Curiosity Lab, a city-owned and -operated living lab designed to advance intelligent mobility and smart city technology, as well as the city’s startup incubator, originally called Prototype Prime and now operating under the Curiosity Lab brand. Town Center adds another dimension to the city’s glowing reputation. The 21-acre mixed use development serves as a downtown for the city. Town Center is the premier community gathering place where friends and family meet to attend concerts and events like Bark in the Park, Flicks on the Green, Screen on the Green, the Peachtree Corners Decathlon and our annual signature Holiday Glow on the Green.

SNELLVILLE Big things are happening for the city “Where Everybody is Proud to be Somebody.” The city’s downtown skyline is being transformed as the construction of The Grove of Towne Center – a mixed-use development that will bring unique dining, housing and entertainment to the city. The Grove at Town Center will bring 250 luxury apartments, a 750-space public parking garage, several thousand square feet of retail/office space and a world-class City Market. It will also have a new, state-of-the-art Gwinnett County library. All of these exciting amenities at The Grove at Town Center will help to create a lively new city center and downtown for Snellville. A greenway is being built which will connect The Grove with T.W. Briscoe Park and nearby cities such as Stone Mountain and Lawrenceville. Keep an eye out for all of these exciting changes to deliver in Fall 2022.

SUGAR HILL Home to “the hill where the sugar spilled in 1939,” Sugar Hill is a thriving city where communities enjoy the sweet life, full of local treasures like The Bowl, the Eagle Theatre and the E Center. From a sleepy bedroom community to a vibrant downtown, Sugar Hill is home to exceptional parks, a community garden and golf course, The Sugar Hill Art Gallery & History Museum, memorable events, concerts in The Bowl outdoor amphitheater and a 16.5-mile greenway that will wrap around Sugar Hill connecting its neighborhoods to downtown. SUWANEE Suwanee is a progressive, friendly community known for preserving greenspace and creating new parks. The city has more than 500 acres of parkland and miles of walking and biking trails, including Suwanee Town Center and the Suwanee Creek Greenway. The city began as a Shawnee Indian village where the Suwanee Creek runs into the Chattahoochee River. First recognized as a town in 1838, Suwanee was also a railroad stop and grew around the railroad depot. Today, Suwanee has been recognized by several national publications as “best place” to live and raise families. More than 19,000 residents enjoy over 40 community events every year with the Town Center hosting a wide variety of popular festivals that range from the Taste of Suwanee to the Suwanee Jazz Festival to the Suwanee Wine Festival. Suwanee is also committed to supporting public art. The Suwanee SculpTour brings a variety of sculptures to downtown Suwanee on a rotating basis for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Moving Gwinnett residents around the 437 square miles of our county takes more than 2,500 miles of road, over 700 signalized intersections, heavy rail for transporting goods and the fourthbusiest airport in Georgia. The Gwinnett Department of Transportation performs this mission with 183 full-time personnel and an annual operating budget of over $64.6 million. Public transit and improvement projects like the Peach Pass lanes on I-85 and the diverging diamond interchanges on several of our busiest intersections, make getting around Gwinnett much easier for the more than 960,000 people who call Gwinnett home and the thousands of visitors who travel in and out of the county every day.
Protecting almost a million people is no easy feat. Gwinnett’s Fire and Emergency Services Department, which is Georgia’s largest, responds to more than 84,000 calls for help each year. It takes 1,018 brave men and women dedicated to saving lives and protecting property to deliver the highest quality of service by holding the principles of truth, trust, respect and unity. These superheroes operate from 31 strategically placed fire stations that include 31 engine companies, 12 ladder trucks and 33 ambulances. All emergency response vehicles are staffed with EMTs and paramedics and carry essential medical equipment for advanced life support.

GWINNETT POLICE DEPARTMENT: PROTECT AND SERVE
The Gwinnett County Police Department is a nationally accredited and rapidly growing police agency. The department currently has an authorized strength of 930 sworn officers supported by 296 civilian employees with the responsibility of providing law enforcement services to a growing population. The department is organized into the Office of the Chief and two bureaus. The Administrative Bureau consists of the Administrative Services and Support Operations divisions, while the Operations Bureau includes the Criminal Investigations and Uniform divisions. When you add together all of the county’s sworn officers, city police departments, the Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol, it’s an impressive force.

INFRASTRUCTURE
PARKS AND RECREATION One of the many benefits to living in Gwinnett County is the award-winning parks system and the extensive range of recreational activities offered year-round to residents. From a stroll on a trail and youth sports, to a fitness or pottery class, Gwinnett County Park & Recreation programming is expansive. Many of the 50 county parks feature views of woodlands, lakes, meadows, streams and gently rolling hills, and several include historic sites and museums to help you explore the past and enjoy Gwinnett County history. On an average day, the Community Recreation Centers are filled with a multitude of activities and events for everyone from infants to senior citizens. There are summer camps, skate complexes, leisure activities, art classes, aquatic centers, tennis courts, disc golf courses, sports fields and the list goes on and on!

WATER ON TAP: THIRSTY ANYONE?
If you have ever reported for jury duty, applied for a marriage license or perhaps had to pay a ticket (oops!), you’ve “witnessed” our court system in action. Gwinnett’s system is one of Georgia’s largest and most efficient when it comes to serving justice. Maintaining “law and order” is a top priority. The center of law and government is the Gwinnett Justice & Administration Center, located in Lawrenceville. This four-level, people-oriented justice and administration center preserves the identity and independence of the courts while consolidating all county government needs into one facility. A common lobby connects 24 courtrooms, support areas, many county departments and the office of our 7th district Congresswoman. That’s a lot of power under one roof!
The people of Gwinnett consume an average of 70.4 million gallons of water per day! When you need that much, a few trips to the store for bottled water just won’t do. So, the Department of Water Resources of our county provides clean, safe drinking water for all of us thirsty residents! Gwinnett County’s source of water is Lake Lanier. To access this raw water, Gwinnett County operates and maintains two separate intake and pump facilities along with 10 water storage tanks and 9 water booster pump stations located throughout the county. State certified water production staff provide continuous monitoring and quality control of the water production infrastructure and equipment.

Since returning to Gwinnett County in August of 2021, I have shared with others how good it is to be “home.” This truly was a homecoming for me as I had served 13 years in various leadership positions assistant principal to associate superintendent in Gwinnett County Public Schools before leaving to become a superintendent in Washington State. Given my previous experiences in this outstanding organization, I was excited and honored to be tapped as the next superintendent of Georgia’s largest district. So far, I have visited 82 of our 141 schools to meet and talk with our students, their families, GCPS employees and community members. The energy, enthusiasm and engagement I have witnessed reinforces my belief in GCPS and leaves little room to question why this school district has been recognized, year after year, in the “Best of Gwinnett” edition. Being recognized as the “Best” comes with a responsibility to those we serve and to this great community. As a district, we strive to recruit, hire, develop and retain a high-performing workforce. That emphasis pays off in our classrooms and throughout the district, making a difference in
the lives of our students and the wider community. I commend our employees as true heroes who work tirelessly to ensure that our students and school district thrive. As we look to the future, we want to ensure that GCPS remains a “best” place to work and learn. We are building on the district’s past success while focusing new energy on a comprehensive strategic plan to align district resources in order to achieve our vision and mission. We are partnering with other outstanding districts in the nation—through the Learning 2025 network—to focus on improvement that will move us forward, ensuring that our district remains focused on its core business of teaching and learning—preparing students for their futures, not our past.
