Halloween is the perfect time to teach kids econ I believe parents should take advantage of “teachable moments” whenever they come along. And when it comes to teaching kids about economics, there’s no better time than Halloween. I realize many will be reading this the day after, when the ankle-biters have already descended on the neighborhood like sugarcrazed locusts, scooping up every last “Fun-Sized” Snickers bar and bag of M&M’s within a five-mile radius. That’s OK. Assuming your little tax exemptions didn’t stay up all night devouring the entire bag — which I’ll admit is a possibility — you should

Rob Jenkins still have plenty of props for your economic object lesson. Please note, these lessons work better with large groups, like Sunday School classes and ball teams. You could accomplish the same thing by banding together with other parents in your neighborhood or social

group. But if all you have are your own kids, my suggestions will still work. You will need, whether working with a large or small group, a roughly equal-size bunch of kids who did not go trick-ortreating, either because they were too lazy or because they were distraught over Georgia’s latest loss to the hated Gators. (I’m writing this on Wednesday, so we’ll see if I got that right.) Once you have all the elements in place — the kids you’re teaching, their bags of candy, and the non-trick-or-treaters — you’re ready to deliver a mini-crash-course on various economic systems.

Communism. Confiscate all the candy. Any child who tries to hold back should be punished severely, perhaps by being required to wear blue and orange. Then, keeping about half for yourself, redistribute the rest to all the children, including those who did not bring any. While ignoring the protests of the producers, be sure to point out that you plan to do the same next year. This will save you money on costumes. Socialism. Confiscate about 65 percent of each child’s candy. Keep half for yourself — including all the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — and distribute the rest to the children

who did not go trick-ortreating. Tax-and-spend nanny state (aka, United States). Confiscate about 40 percent of the candy. Once again, keep half and give the rest to the nontrick-or-treaters. (If you’re thinking the difference between this and socialism is only a matter of degrees — and very few degrees, at that — then give yourself another Peanut Butter Cup.) Free-market system. Take 10 percent of the candy off the top to cover your legitimate expenses, like gasoline and costumes. Then encourage each child to share another 10 percent of his or her

candy with those who, through lack of effort, didn’t get any. They can keep the rest to do with as they will. If you’ll take just a little time each Halloween to share these lessons with your children, they will grow up with a far better understanding of basic economics than most. This will disqualify them from government service but will otherwise improve their lives immensely.
