OVERALL IMPRESSION
Phoebe Fox as Eve did well as the class teacher as she comes closer and closer to the ghost that is pursuing Edward, and is also convincing as she becomes more and more afraid and concerned about his safety. She also projected a stern determination to rescue him as the nightmares and encounters become more frequent.
If you liked the original, this one would be OK, just a bit gloomier. If you’re a fan of fast paced action, or really scary horror pictures, this one’s not for you. Much too deep and involved for the kids.
Wait for the video so you can rewind and replay scenes to figure out what is really going on in the dark visions and appearances. Pick a dark, dreary night and gather with friends around the campfire and prepare for the jumps and bumps in the night.
Passable for what it is, but could have been a lot better. Not as captivating as the original due to slow pacing but does gradually pick up speed later on, just never really meets up to expectations. Some references to first version, but necessary to see the original to make the connections. All-in-all a fair effort, just a bit too dark and too slow for me. Not what I expected from Hammer films.

There is some continuity with the original as this movie is set in the same location as before, in Eel Marsh House on the misty moors. This time it takes place during the blitz in WWII. The pace is sluggish and drawn out and requires some effort to stay involved. Some similarities to the original with a child, Edward (Oaklee Pendergast), as the target of the vengeful evil spirit, just not very convincing.
The acting was fine, but the script was not exactly stellar. There were very few moments of mystery or plot twists so the movie was a little uninteresting.
Fans of slasher films will be bored stiff during this sleepy sequel. The pacing and muted violence is much more suited to fans of the traditional mystery films of the ’60s and early ’70s, or lovers of Edgar Allan Poe and Agatha Christie (I just wish the movie lived up to legacy those great writers).
While this is fine enough for a matinee ticket, it might be best to wait for the DVD or Netflix for “The Woman In Black 2.” There are just not enough scares or excitement for the average moviegoer here.
I am glad to see that movies like this are still being made, but “The Woman In Black 2” doesn’t quite meet expectations. Since many of the violent acts involve children, this movie is probably best-suited for adults and mature teens.

I enjoyed the moody, dark atmosphere of the film, although it was rather slow-paced overall. There were a few brief scares along the way, but nothing too violent or over the top. This is definitely a less bloody horror movie than most; I’ve seen many more PG-13 movies that push the envelope with gruesome murders and bad language.
“WIB2” features some decent acting, along with several “gotcha” jolts to get your attention, as well as nice cinematography of the bleak English countryside.
Phoebe Fox does a fine job as Eve Parkins, a schoolteacher who is charged with evacuating several children from WWII London during the Blitz. She and Miss Hogg (Helen McCrory) end up at remote Eel Marsh House, where all the spooky stuff from the original “WIB” took place 40 years earlier. The ladies try to set up a semblance of order and safety for the children, but soon find out that sinister elements are lurking nearby. Jeremy Irvine (“War Horse”) does a decent job as a nearby RAF pilot who is smitten with Eve, and who brings a sense of hope to the storyline.
Horror and suspense fans, especially of supernatural stuff like “Paranormal Activity,” will really dig this flick. However, be prepared for a lot of dead time (pun intended) during the setup of the story. The film takes a long time to get going. At least the movie featured suspenseful moments and kept the actual bloodletting to a minimum. The story line of Eve’s past is woven very well into the plot for “WIB2” and sets up the inevitable conflict with the ghost of the Woman in Black herself.
Go to the matinee if you must it now, but you’d do best to catch this one on Netflix or Blu-ray. It’s just not that scary or entertaining.
The original “WIB” was a surprise hit of 2012, raking in some serious cashola for Hammer Films while becoming the highest grossing horror movie in the UK since 1990. However, “WIB2” doesn’t hold a candle to the it’s older brother. As a movie fanatic, I feel conned when this happens. Sequels that don’t live up to their originals should have a “pain and suffering” rebate clause in their ticket prices. “WIB2” isn’t a bad film — it’s just an OK film that could have been a lot scarier and much more suspenseful.
