10:01 p.m. on AMC Preacher Many fans of the comic by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon that inspired this TV adaptation were nonplussed to find that Season 1 turned out to be a back story to the events with which they were familiar. That changes as the show enters Season 2 tonight with “On the Road,” which sees Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy (Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, Joseph Gilgun) on a quest to find God. Belatedly, they discover they’re being stalked by a killer cowboy (Graham McTavish) from hell.
9:01 p.m. on FOX Superhuman How quickly can you translate what someone is saying backwards? That skill is demonstrated by one of the contestants showcased in the new episode “Believe the Unbelievable,” a title also meant to apply to the other unique individuals featured here. 10 p.m. on ABC The Gong Show Though she began her career with a good number of dramatic roles, anyone familiar with Elizabeth Banks in more recent years knows she has a strong sense of humor ... which should come in especially handy as she serves as a guest panelist in this new episode of the game-show reboot. She and fellow judges Will Forte (“The Last Man on Earth”) and Fred Armisen (“Portlandia”) weigh in on a parade of offbeat — and that’s likely putting it very mildly — acts. 10 p.m. on CBS Zoo A lot has changed since last we saw the small brigade actively opposing a rampage by animals — the year, for instance, since it’s a decade later in the Season 3 opening of the suspense series based on the novel by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge. The
quest by Jackson (still played by James Wolk), Jamie (Kristen Connolly) and their comrades now involves “hybrids,” laboratory-generated creatures that are even more lethal than those they previously battled.
FRIDAY 8 p.m. on CW Masters of Illusion Magic prevails for another summer as this showcase for prestidigitators starts its fourth season, with the amiable Dean Cain continuing as the series’ host. The first new installment — “Crazy, Crazy Cards and Stilly Silhouettes” — is likely to have its deck stacked, quite literally. Nathan Burton, Jibrizy, Joshua Jay, Farrell Dillon, Billy Kidd, Bill Cook and Xavier Mortimer are the guest illusionists featured. Another new episode follows. 9 p.m. on FOOD Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives A new episode called “Island and Desert” finds host Guy Fieri starting out in the latter — specifically, Palm Desert, Calif., where a cafe dishes out such tasty fare as a succulent rib melt and breakfast tarts. Later, in Maui, Hawaii, a funky gluten-
free spot makes full-flavored pizza, plus fish and chips.
SATURDAY 8 p.m. on PBS Austin City Limits Band of Horses and Parker Millsap share the bill in this encore episode that highlights their shared genre of roots rock. The selections by Band of Horses showcase the album “Why Are You OK” and include “Hag,” “In a Drawer” and “Throw My Mess.” Then, Oklahoma-native singer-songwriter Millsap draws from his release “The Very Last Day” with the title cut, plus “Heaven Sent” and “You Gotta Move.”
