Three questions for Digiteo’s director Maurice Robin

What is Digiteo and what is its role? Digiteo is the largest research and technology transfer cluster in France dedicated to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). It unites the key players in teaching and research around the design, development and validation of software-based systems. Digiteo is also responsible for coordinating the ICT project at the Paris-Saclay Campus, which aims to become one of the 10 leading campuses in the world. What links does Digiteo have with the industrial world? Transforming research results into industrial applications is a key part of Digiteo’s identity. That is why the network takes advantage of the high number of global industrial leaders in Ile-de-France to encourage them to adopt the innovations developed by its members through technology transfer. Digiteo’s aim is to promote the establishment of partnerships with the world of industry, in a variety of ways: the creation of research chairs within the cluster’s founder establishments, as well as the coordination of joint research projects. For example, Digiteo’s

•4

teams participate in more than 80% of the System@tic Paris-Region competitiveness cluster’s projects. Finally, each establishment has a technology transfer department which maintains close ongoing relations with industrial companies. How is Digiteo positioned in relation to its founder establishments’ activities? Our role is to develop collaboration between ICT research teams on the Saclay plateau. Based on the presence of multidisciplinary teams and high-tech industrial companies in a single location, we try to encourage synergies and fluency between fundamental and applied research, leading to technology transfer. The strength of our excellence network also allows us to implement cross-functional projects, producing technologies that generate advances in health, sustainable development, safety, etc.

// Technology Offer //

Three questions for Françoise Fabre, chair of the Technology Transfer committee

What does Digiteo do in the field of technology transfer? Along with the technology transfer support provided to researchers by their institutions, Digiteo has established an innovative and communal approach to support in order to accelerate technology transfer. This approach is implemented by the Technology Transfer committee, formed with a representative from each of the network’s member establishments. As well as training courses relating to innovation, the adoption of a joint Intellectual Property charter and the establishment of a patents portfolio by all Digiteo members, we are focusing on the technical and economic readiness of research projects. The ultimate goal is to boost transfer to the world of industry, both by creating start-ups and signing contracts with companies. Currently, out of the 14 projects which have been developed since the beginning, there have been four start-ups created or which are now in incubation, three transfers to industrial companies, three transfer projects in the process of being negotiated, and numerous patents and software registrations. Our activities reach beyond national boundaries, since Digiteo is part of the FITT project, the first European // Technology Offer //

project involving technology transfer tools specific to ICT and dedicated to technology transfer professionals. How do you accelerate technology transfer? Firstly, through Digiteo’s technology transfer cluster, which means we benefit from the sharing of tools and best practices. But above all, we have created OMTEs (collaborative technology transfer readiness programmes), which as a result of a financial award and tailored assistance, help accelerate the transfer of research results to the economic world: funding for an engineer for a year to build a prototype, market research to analyze the market and the competition and, finally, analysis in collaboration with a firm specializing in freedom-to-operate and patent registration opportunities. What is this brochure? The brochure, which is now available in English, contains case studies illustrating our technology offer. Most of the projects presented are carried out collaboratively between several of the cluster’s establishments. The brochure highlights Digiteo’s pool of innovative technologies, intended to be transformed into industrial innovation. 5•

Technology transfer services: the interface between research and industry

Each establishment in the cluster has its own technology transfer department, responsible for negotiating partnership research contracts between laboratories and industrial companies, as well as managing patent registrations and licences and usage contracts for innovations. These departments also support researchers throughout the business start-up process and carry out training and work to raise awareness about technology transfer. They are therefore key contact points for industrial companies interested in the scientific and technology offers of the cluster. The brochure also provides these companies with samples of the technologies developed within the cluster, which has a portfolio of nearly 1500 patents and numerous software registrations.

•6

Pooling resources for greater effectiveness The technology transfer departments organize joint initiatives through Digiteo to transfer technology and identify best practices. Its most original project prepares high economic potential technologies for transfer via OMTEs (collaborative technology transfer readiness programmes). These provide support in terms of marketing, technological and legal resources. Fourteen OMTEs have been granted in three years. Digiteo also initiates projects to raise awareness about technology transfer, and provides the related trainings particularly through the European FITT project, dedicated to technology transfer professionals. Finally, Digiteo dedicates itself to promoting the cluster’s technological offer.

CRISTABLU

Advanced production methods for semiconductor crystals

n

Achieving complex patterns in Group III nitride photonic semiconductor crystals

Targeted applications/markets

LEDs Blue and UV lasers l Membrane structures l MicroEMS and NanoEMS l l

n

Innovation benefits

This technology enables the production of: l High aspect ratio vertical patterns l Complex patterns of differing shapes and widths without obvious limitation of hole width reduction l Membrane structures

n

Description

The standard etching processes are not capable of achieving vertical etching with high aspect (depth/width) ratios in Group III nitride photonic semiconductor materials (AIN, GaN, etc.). This new process offers an alternative to the etching process by using a pre-etched substrate on which a vertical nitride layer is deposited using a compliant epitaxy technique. The bidimensional geometry of the substrate is therefore transferred to the nitride layer. This makes it possible to produce photonic crystals with patterns of differing widths and shapes. This method also enables the production of membrane structures for use in photonic and optoelectronic applications.

EOFAST

n

Ultrashort and teraherz electrical signal measurement

Targeted applications/markets

Telecommunications: rapid characterisation of electronic and optoelectronics circuits l Safety and materials: high-frequency (THz) characterisation of complex stratified media l Biology: characterisation of biomaterials using THz frequencies with a spatial resolution far below the limit of diffraction l

Electro-optical sampling system for measuring ultrafast electrical signals

n

Innovation benefits

Frequency range from 50 GHz to 2 THz Time resolution: rise time of 460 fs l Measurement system bandwidth of 440 GHz l Dynamic range of 40 dB up to frequencies of 440 GHz l Determination of propagation direction. Propagation direction is determined by comparing the system response time using two different electrooptical sensor operating modes. This technique therefore offers a very promising route to identifying clutter created by impedance mismatches inherent in electronic circuits operating at very high frequencies l 3D electric field mapping with a spatial resolution of 30 µm. The electrooptical measurement sensor can be moved in all three dimensions with micrometric precision l l

n

Description

The evolution of electrical signals over time is currently visualised using oscilloscopes, the fastest of which have bandwidth of around 110 GHz. The problem is that the fastest electronic components achieve frequencies of many hundreds of GHz, and therefore require the use of equipment with higher bandwidth. The electro-optical measurement system uses both electronics and optics to measure electrical signals with a bandwidth in excess of 440 GHz, i.e. a time resolution in the order of one picosecond. This metrology tool is therefore well-placed to replace the oscilloscope and enables to characterise electronic circuits. It can also be used to determine the signal propagation direction, and therefore identify the presence of clutter. In addition to its, With the opportunity it offers to view the phase and amplitude of electric fields in the THz frequency range, the electro-optical measurement system also has applications in a broad range of materials and biomaterials research. • 26

HW/SW Modeling, Conception and Validation

n

Simulated targets: ARM, PowerPC, Star12X, and TMS320C3X.

n

Targeted applications/markets

Innovation benefits

Most UNISIM virtual platforms are sufficiently representative of the real hardware that whole operating systems (e.g. Linux, VxWorks), unmodified software stacks (e.g. an AUTOSAR software stack), and industrial applications can run on them. Typical use cases are: l Non-intrusive debugging and testing of software: software can be debugged and tested without affecting either its functional and/or temporal behaviour l Early hardware/software integration: software stack can be debugged and tested within a representative hardware environment before the availability of hardware/FPGA

Supported hosts: Linux, Windows, Mac OS X.

Description

UNISIM provides several virtual platforms and a framework to ease the development of new virtual platforms. Interaction between humans and machines is one of the areas in computer science that has evolved a lot these last years. Progresses and innovations are mainly due to increases in computer power and technology of sensor devices and interactive software. It is also the result of new ways of considering the interaction with computers and the role of computers in everyday life. It is indeed increasingly mandatory to understand how humans perceive these technological environments and interact with them but it is also necessary to validate the technological solutions mediating these interactions with end users, which is the objective reached by the technologies described inside the booklet.

EURITRACK

n

Quickly and safely detects dangerous or fraudulent cargos

Targeted applications/markets

Port authorities and customs are the key markets for this technology. l Major applications are in customs check points (harbours or airports) l

Such technology has been developed in Europe within the EURITRACK project (IST-FP6) and is now ready to be transferred to an industrial partner.

Active neutronic inspection of cargos n

Innovation benefits

Standard X-ray systems can only give an idea of the shape and of the density of the objects but can not fully characterize the chemical elements present inside the container. Several threat materials such as explosives have indeed density very close to benign items and can be prepared in any shape. l The operational system, designed within the EURITRACK European project framework, is the first active neutron system for large items based on small transportable neutron generators with associated-particle trackers. The TNIS allows the chemical composition measurement of the transported goods, in particular light organic compounds constituting explosives and drugs. Customs authorities can use the system to save time during container checking l

n

Description

The Tagged Neutron Inspection System (TNIS) is an innovative tool to investigate the content of large-size closed containers, such as cargo, and to analyze the material composition in defined volumes. Neutron Tag inspection uses spectrum analysis to identify explosives, drugs and illicit goods witch are the mains target for customs, complementary to the classical X-ray imaging. The system is completely non-intrusive, requiring no opening of the container. The software interface is user-friendly for customs operators.

TOMOX

n

X-ray tomography

Targeted applications/markets

Characterisation of the physical and morphological properties of samples in many different industry sectors: l Energy (electrolysers, fuel cells, materials of the future, etc.) l Transport (energy-absorbing foams, combustion, etc.) l Materials sciences (materials that are porous, fibrous, woven, etc.)

New techniques in tomography reconstruction

n

Innovation benefits

This innovation is being developed out of a combination of the latest advances in technology and algorithms. In terms of hardware, these advances are based on micro- and nano-focus sources delivering micron and sub-micron resolutions. The software component uses algebraic and iterative methods to link the segmentation phase with the 3-D image reconstruction phase.

n

The range of potential applications for X-ray imaging is huge. The outcomes of this project will include the development of a fully operational imaging system for the benefit of its scientific, academic and/or industrial partner.

Description

X-ray tomography has been used in industry for some years, but its usefulness is driving stronger and stronger demand. Traditional reconstruction techniques are limited to objects that are highly heterogeneous in nature (copper in plastic), have a high aspect ratio (electronic PCBs, etc.) or require high spatial resolution (porous and fibrous materials, etc.). The TOMOX project aims to move beyond these limitations. Distribution to initial users could take the form of a platform involving a range of industrial partners, followed by industrial technology transfer or the creation of a new company.

Automatic detection of events for security and safety in living spaces Security and safety of housebound people l Contribution to addressing the needs of an ageing population l Lower incidence and severity of domestic accidents l Lower building energy costs and improved personal comfort for occupants l l

n

Description

This video analysis system developed by the CEA LIST interprets human activity in living spaces. The images generated by the network of cameras installed in homes, multiple occupancy buildings or business premises are analysed automatically in real time to detect human presence and infer the posture of the person concerned (sitting, standing, lying, etc.) and his/her situation relative to the immediate environment (3-D localisation). Data can be used simultaneously to detect risk situations (falls, suspicious immobility, unsupervised child in an environment of risk, etc.), to locate the people present in a given environment and to recognise their activity. Apart from safety and security purposes, data are useful in smart home applications dedicated to building energy efficiency (control of lighting, air conditioning, etc.), while maximising comfort for occupants. • 94

CRYPTONET

Make your network safer n

Proactive, self configurable, secure routing protocol for ad hoc networks

Targeted applications/markets

Security and defence Automotive l Industrial networks l l

n

Innovation benefits

CRYPTONET makes it possible to implement authentification mechanisms for ad hoc networks, for which a simple PKI is used. The use of up to date electronic signature algorithms derived from elliptical curves ensures that these encryption operations have a reduced impact on the network and its nodes.

n

CRYPTONET adds a number of security properties to network nodes, including sender authentication and authentication of transmitted message integrity.

Description

CRYPTONET uses the OLSRv2 (Optimized Link State Routing) proactive protocol, which is particularly well adapted for use with the ad hoc networks spontaneously generated by mobile devices communicating over wireless networks. There are already many applications for these ad hoc networks, and the number continues to multiply as processors become smaller, terminals become more diverse and wireless connection resources become allpervading. The introduction of authentification mechanisms is essential to ensure high levels of security at ad hoc network nodes.

Monitoring Trees

An unambiguous failure localization in WDM networks

n

An innovative and cost-effective technique Demonstartion of the m-trees technology

l

n

Targeted applications/markets Optical telecommunication networks: long distance optical telecommunication

Innovation benefits

Unambiguous failure localization Reducing the total monitoring cost of optical networks l Reducing the power consumption (using a minimum of laser diodes and optical monitors) l Efficient use of network resources yielding a larger number of satisfied connection requests l Reducing the blocking probability due to the wavelength continuity constraint l l

n

l

Description The monitoring trees or m-trees allows to minimize the number of optical channels used for monitoring WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) networks while ensuring an unambiguous failure localization (failures such as fiber cut or optical amplifier failure). Compared to other solutions, the m-trees technique allows reducing the monitoring cost as well as optimizing the network capacity. For extremely large networks, this approach can be extended by considering multiple trees.
