Abstract In the last 200 years, Singapore has lost approximately half of its animal species. Harmful actions by humankind - while necessary for urbanisation - poses a threat to Singapore’s rich diversity due to large-scale habitat destruction. Fading Fauna and Fiona seeks to bring attention to Singapore’s peculiar sounding or looking species of animals and plants that are vulnerable or endangered. The sketched environments symbolises fading habitats and eventually the disappearance of fauna and fiona.

Inspiration & Moodboard Climate change is brought about largely by human actions, such as agriculture or farming; industrialisation and many more. The harmful actions by humankind, while necessary to aid development of the country, is posing a threat to Singapore’s rich diversity, and exacerbating climate change. Fading Fauna and Flora aims to bring attention to Singapore’s rare and peculiar sounding or looking species of animals that are vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, and my not be found on other parts of the globe. The use of fine black lines depicting the habitat on the plain background would be used to emphasise the idea of Fading Fauna as it brings across the idea of disappearing habitats which would in turn cause endangered species to have a greater risk of extinction.

COMPOSITION 1:
Banner Design
Symmetrical yet not entirely; arranged such that bottom up represents the sea, land and air animals and plants respectively.
COMPOSITION 2:
DEVELOPMENT
Flow of lily pads connecting the different motifs together; not arranged according to the different categories, plenty of breathing space throughout.

composition 2
composition 1
COMPOSITION 3 A combination of 1 and 2, with elements of symmetry and the flow of lily pads. Overlapping of motifs for greater depth.

Colour proofed, 15% brightness & saturation
Final composition
The final composition is an adaptation of composition 3 where more breathing space was given around the motifs just like in Chinese paintings. New cloud motifs are introduced to replace the two smaller bats instead, and I played around with the scale of motifs to make it more dynamic. I also added subtle texture in the background for a sense of depth.

DARK
I reformatted my banner layout into a horizontal one, keeping certain elements the same. For instance, the repetition of lily pads to create a flow, as well as the grouping of tapirs. I wanted to create a visual narrative in my design. I created a dark version and changed the layer mode of my sketched drawings into “difference” so that it can be seen against the dark blue background. To make the colours pop, I duplicated the motifs and applied “soft light” to the layer mode.
LIGHT
DV2011 : Pattern, Art, Design & Architecture | 2021
For the light version, I darkened the background so that it would not appear too blinding on the screen of the media wall.
