A Modern take on Retaining Wall

Page 1

Joyce Welch - Modern retaining wall The wall is 139.5 feet long and replaces the existing brick wall. The new wall will be straight where the existing wall curves in the front yard, but will curve to match the curve of the wall in the back yard. Materials - The base of the wall is poured concrete. The wall itself is designed for a concrete block with measurements of 16x8x6 and mortar. The block will be finished with cap blocks and stucco facade unless noted otherwise with brick (either from the existing wall or with a matching brick) or roofing tin. For the most part, the base of the wall is no more than 20” wide, however the following sections are wider: the columns for the gate, and wall sections 9 (22”), 15 (24”), 21 (24”) & 23 (24”). The wall should be built with staggered blocks and rebar to strengthen it, the detail below does not show staggered bricks.

The brick columns for will support a gate between them.

Because of slope, the wall will need to step up 18 inches over the first 104 feet from the road. Each step will rise up by one block. Sections 1 through 6 will be on the first step (31.5 feet long) Sections 7 through 13 will be on the second step (40.5 feet long) Sections 14 through 18 will be on the third step (28.5 feet long) The remaining sections will be on the fourth step. (39 feet long)

At the joint between wall section 20 and 21, the wall will begin to curve to follow the existing curve of the land. I have not specified the angle. This is to be determined by the builder as the foundation is poured.

The wall curves again between wall sections 22 and 23.

The wall will tie into the existing brick 1’ tall brick wall at the end.
