FACTORS THAT CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT MOOD
Hunger: A 2018 study from researchers at the University of Guelph in Ontario found evidence that a change in glucose levels can have a lasting effect on mood. The study, published in the journal Psychopharmacology, found that rats injected with a glucose metabolism blocker experienced stress and depressed mood due to the resultant hypoglycemia. The study lends credence to the notion that many people have about feeling moody when they don’t eat.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE
Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus.
Statistics collecting resource
Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME
(NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.
1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.
2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.
3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.
4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant.
5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is amongthem, considersigningupforadditionalcoverageoptionstoprotect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* The way some items are packaged these days, you need to be Houdini to get into them. When you’re dealing with blister packs -- items sealed inside a hard plastic wrapper that looks to be heat crimped on the outsides -- try your can opener. You can run it around the edge of stubborn plastic packages, enough to get the item out. It’s more secure than a carpet knife or razor.
* Want to be able to tell at a glance which key belongs to the front door, the shed, your grandma’s house, etc.? Raid your (or your wife’s or daughter’s) stash of nail polish to paint the tops of keys to color code them.
* “Styrofoam trays that come with meat or in the produce area are very handy helpers for lots of little jobs. If yours are clean and unmarred, wash with hot, soapy water, rinse and dry for later. They are perfect for sending a friend home with leftovers, as you can cover the meal with plastic wrap. There is then no need to return a plate.” -- D. in Indiana
* For a deck of playing cards that has gotten sticky, put it in a bag (paper or plastic) and add a bit of baby powder. Shake vigorously. Take the cards out and shuffle to get off the extra powder. They are likely good as new.
* “Tidy loosely folded electric cords by storing them in cardboard tubes. The tubes can be cut to fit from a paper towel roll, or you can use a smaller, toilet-paper roll. Even long cords can be stored together in a giftwrap core. Do not overfill a tube, nor wind any electrical cord too tightly.”
-- O.R. in Nevada
* If you have a juice spill on clothing, try club soda to remove it when the stain is fresh.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS
(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.
One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.
TheGovernor’sSchoolalsoservesasaresourcetoallteachersandstudents in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools.
The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students.
This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the communityandinnovativeapproachtoartseducationandskillsdevelopment with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

How to Stop Dogs From Roughhousing
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My girlfriend and I moved in together recently, and we each brought a dog with us. I’ve got a German Shepherd named Mac, and her Golden Retriever is Diz. Both are about 2 years old, and they get along ne. However, in the evenings they roughhouse in the living room. We want them to just settle down so we can watch TV. Is this possible? -Laura N., Augusta, Georgia
DEAR LAURA: It’s very possible, even with younger dogs. And the sooner you establish behavior norms around a schedule, the better.

Diz’s playful personality probably balances out Mac’s serious working dog persona, so take advantage of this.
Wear them out: Both of these breeds are energetic. It’ll be much easier to keep them calm if you take them out for a walk or a romp at a dog park for about an hour before dinner and TV time.
Set the behavior: When it’s TV time, bring them into the room and give the “sit” or “lie down” and “stay” commands to each dog. Give them a treat only when they obey the commands.
Correct and redirect: When the dogs begin to wrestle or steal each other’s toys, tell them to stop. Call both dogs over and work on the basic commands again, then have them sit or lie down in the original spots.
Separate them: If they begin roughhousing again and no longer respond to commands, take Diz into one room and Mac into another.
is will take time and repetition. e goal is to get them to follow your commands for longer and longer periods until you no longer have to separate them. Be prepared to pause the TV and focus on their training for days or weeks. e long-term reward is worth it.

According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles Scam Messages on Cellphones
Somehow my cellphone number ended up on somebody’s list. Now I’m receiving daily text messages saying that my Amazon Prime account is about to be canceled for nonpayment -- unless I immediately click the link and give them my credit card number. Some of the messages say the account has already been canceled but I can get it back by -- you guessed it -- giving them my credit card number within an hour.
I don’t think so.
I’m on a phone list for Net ix as well. I called Net ix and no, my account is not about to be suspended. Said the representative: “You’re on automatic pay. If somehow a payment isn’t made, it’s our fault for not processing it.”
If you’re getting those “you’re late” messages on your cellphone, beware. Don’t accidentally touch the link in the message. It will take you to a website that looks real but is not, and just connecting to it can download a virus on your phone. Back out carefully and delete the text message. Take your time.
Don’t try to contact the scammers to ask to be taken o their list. It only veri es that yours is a good number and it will be sold to others.
If you want to report these scams, go to reportfraud. c. gov.

A Long Overdue Thank You
I want to sincerely thank all of the people who stopped to help after my accident on February 13th on I-390 (Groveland Road). I will never forget the people who took time out of their evening to make sure I (and the other individual) were okay. Thanks to the man who let me use his cell phone....it was very nice of you. A huge thank you to Trooper Anderson for your kindness, professionalism, and helpfulness. You are all angels!
Farmington Fire Dept. and Water Dept. Many Thanks!
I want to RAVE about my town’s Volunteers - Chief Phil Robinson, Dawn Malcomb & Matt Hauf and crew with the Fire Dept. Also, Josh Fagner and crew at the Water Dept. Thank you all for coming to our rescue on a Saturday morning with our basement water problem! You all saved our basement from extensive damage! Your kindness, extra help and care are appreciated. We are so grateful to you all!
An ER MD at Rochester General Hospital was a Gem
In mid-October 2022 I went to the Rochester General Hospital emergency room (ER) and got there about 6:15PM. I went there because at about 5:15PM I took my blood pressure with my home device. It registered 202/102 which, for an 81 year old man, was very high. After waiting about an hour a nurse called me to the ER examine room and found my blood pressure lower at 155/95. A doctor then came in and after many medical questions stated I could leave and see my own MD the next day. I advised him that I had a problem. My wife was in the main waiting area in the front of the hospital being brought there in a wheelchair cause she could not stay in the darkish ER corridor with me. Also my car was in the ER parking lot. Dr. Singh became a gem and a savior. He got a wheelchair and pushed me to where my wife was. Then he got my 80 year-old wife in the wheelchair and pushed her for 10 minutes with me behind out of the waiting room through the ER to the ER exit. What Dr S. did was above and beyond
Shopping carts
If you can walk to get a shopping cart or handicap cart, why can’t you return it to the store or cart corral? The answer is just plain laziness! Instead, some leave them between parked cars or in front of their own car and then look around to see if anyone is watching before quickly scurrying away. Even with children, you still have to get one when you arrive. How would you like it if the wind blew one into your car and dented it? Bet you wouldn’t.
No delivery is that important
I was heading to [local town] about 6pm Friday and got almost to [local road] and someone with a red delivery sign on top came down [local road] doing about 60-70 mph and blew the stop sign straight across to [local road]. He had to be doing 70 mph down [local road]. Thank god there was not anyone coming the other way. I did not catch what delivery it was, just that it was a dark blue or black car or SUV with a red sign on top. There is no delivery that important to speed like that. Should be held accountable.
Lanes
Right lane ends, merge left doesn’t mean accelerate then cut off the car that’s already in the proper lane. Slow down. Do you feel you have to be in front? You don’t have the right away!

NEW PATIENTS WELCOME
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Men With Factor V Leiden Can Still Receive Testosterone Therapy
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Factor V Leiden, but I have been wanting to do testosterone replacement therapy. I have heard that testosterone causes blood clots. Obviously, with FVL, that would be a huge deal for me. Is this true? Does it cause clots, or is it safe for me to do? -- R.C.
ANSWER: Factor V Leiden is a common genetic variant that increases a person’s risk for developing a blood clot. However, a person who has never had a blood clot, but who is identified as heterozygous (meaning they only have one copy of the gene) for factor V Leiden, is still not likely to have a blood clot during their lifetime and is not recommended for treatment to prevent a blood clot.
MOUTHGUARDS FOR ORAL PROTECTION
A mouthguard protects your teeth, gums, tongue, andcheeksfromtrauma and injury. A mouthguard should be worn during contact sports and any athletic activity that puts your face at risk of injury. Mouthguards can also be worn at night to mitigate bruxism (tooth grinding). There are different options for mouthguards. Your dentist can make a mold of your teeth to create a custom mouthguard, which will be more comfortable and offer better protection. A custom mold can be made for either sports protection or bruxism prevention. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are molded to the shape of your teeth at home by boiling the mouthguard to soften it and then shaping it to fit your teeth while it’s still warm and pliable.
One of our basic philosophies at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is that our

Testosterone replacement therapy in men with FVL does increase the risk of blood clots in some studies, but not in others. In the studies that have shown an increase in risk, the risk has been estimated as approximately one person per thousand treated with testosterone each year. However, the risk occurs mostly during the first three months, and after two years on treatment, there is no additional risk. Thus, roughly one man per 500 who has FVL and gets treated with testosterone will get a clot, according to the studies that show an increase in risk. This is a small risk, but a blood clot is a significant potential problem. So, the risk of getting a clot should certainly go into the discussion about whether to give testosterone replacement to a man with FVL and symptomatic low testosterone levels. Most of the men I have seen with this issue have elected to take the replacement.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’
Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value.
Family furniture: Save chairs, tables, and other furniture passed down through the generations by doing repairs, if needed, and staining/painting to suit your current decor.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BEER & LENT
In the weeks leading up to Easter, practicing Christians commonly commit to a period of fasting and abstinence known as Lent. This commitment commemorates Christ’s 40-day journey into the desert, and the sacrifices modern day Christians make are meant to replicate those made by Christ duringthatperiod.ManyChristians abstain from alcohol during Lent, but those who do may not realize that beer played a significant role in helping a small community of 17th century monks survive the Lenten fasting season. Monks from the Order of St. Francis of Paola, often referred to as “Paulaner monks,” fasted from all solid foods throughout the season of Lent during the 1600s. According to the Paulaner Brewery, the monks, originally from southern Italy, relocated to Bavaria, once an independent country but now a southern state in Germany, in the 1600s. Their strict religious orders forbade the monks from consuming solid food during Lent, but they still needed nutrients to sustain them. So the monks concocted a strong brew loaded with carbohydrates and nutrients. The monks must have liked the beer, as they continued to brew it and even began selling it in their community. An early doppelbock, the beer was one of the first offerings from the Paulaner Brewery, which opened its doors in 1634 and remains open today.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE
Buying life insurance. Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for.

Starting Anew with New Optimism: Local Artist’s Exhibit, Seeing God in the Ordinary, is Anything but Ordinary
BY SUZIE WELLS
Local artist, Sandra Ann McDannel, 61, has had quite an artistic life. A child of two public school art teachers, she graduated Cum Laude with an ASS degree in graphic art from Finger Lakes Community College, Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Fine Art Printmaking from Bu alo State University, and then earned an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Cincinnati.
At one time, Sandra Ann had taken drawing, photography, and sculpture courses at the Memorial Art Gallery, the Visual Studies Workshop, and several independent art studios in the Rochester area. She served as Teaching Assistant at the University of Cincinnati, and taught at RIT and FLCC, winning accolades including a Special Opportunity Grant from the New York State Foundation for the Arts in 1994. Her art has been in 56 separate events, including solo art exhibits, group shows, and juried events within which she won several awards.
When McDannel married around her graduation from Bu alo State University, she started a family, having two sons. She says, “I’m obsessed with beauty, mostly in people, such as portraitures and in our everyday life situations involving family as shown in many pieces shown in this exhibit.” She states, “I’m starting anew with new optimism.”
Grace Episcopal Church in Scottsville currently features seventeen of Sandra’s works in an exhibit titled “Seeing God in the Ordinary,” representing images from Sandra Ann’s past and present, dealing with family and daily activities. Also included in the exhibit is a set of lithographic drawings she did of a particular highway overpass in Cincinnati, where she did her graduate work. Referred to as the Highway to Heaven Series, shown are four images in the series of the same location from di erent vantage points.
Sandra says, “Life is short. If my art is to contribute to society in any fashion, I must stay consistently busy and involved. I love to draw, and I must remember that, as I have on occasion forgotten this truth in the past.”
She feels she gained support back through Reverend Johnnie E. Ross’ kind o er of an exhibit at Grace Episcopal. Sandra says, “ is show has gotten me excited about creating again. I want to thank the whole congregation for their kind support. e exhibit opportunity revitalized my passion for drawing. e support I received from this community has made all the di erence in the world.”
Open for the past couple of weeks, McDannel’s exhibit will be up throughout Lent. e Wednesday of Holy Week, April 5th at 6 pm, Grace Episcopal will host a closing reception to meet the artist and see additional pieces not previously shown in the exhibit.
Ross says despite the title of the exhibit, “Sandra’s art is anything but ordinary.”

MARCH 2023
This celebration is a great opportunity to learn more about mother nature.
In ancient times, kingdoms in Babylon, Egypt, and Persia spent a huge amount of their cities’ wealth on constructing elaborate gardens. What’s more, they pioneered the technology of irrigation systems, which became a vital part of modern-day gardening.
Gardening, Nature, and Ecology Books Month Fun Facts
The best way to celebrate Gardening, Nature and Ecology Books Month is to plant a seed. There’s nothing better than witnessing a flower grow after weeks of watering and nourishing!
What flower is the easiest to grow?
Sunflowers and zinnias are the easiest flowers to plant, manage, and grow. They require little care and attention.
Baking soda sweetens your crops. Regularly sprinkle a dash of baking soda on your plant’s soil to sweeten your tomatoes.

SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED
Spring for coffee. Many employees require a caffeine buzz to get them through their busy days. The old pot in the break room may not deliver the best brews these days, and you can give employees another coffee fix to help them perk up. Check to see if independent coffee chains or even franchised businesses have to-go carafes. If not, consider purchasing a coffeehouse-inspired coffee maker, complete with the capabilities to make cappuccino and lattés.

ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a worklife balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide up the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your well-being. Quiet time at home in the morning can be a prime time to fit in a workout or catch up on paperwork.

WOMEN AND STEM
The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Sciencearewomen.Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.
According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
