2017 Limacol round-robin knock-out football
Milerock stunned, Western Tigers overpower Eagles 1-0
By Stephan Sookram
A TEN-MAN Milerock team were on Wednesday evening stunned when they were beaten 1-0 by Grove HiTech in the latest round of action in the 2017 Limacol round-robin knock-out football tournament. Playing the opening game of the night’s double-header at the GFC ground, the defending champions had managed
to keep their Grove opponents at bay for most of the night, but they fell apart after the sending-off of Bryan Johnson in the 77th minute. Johnson’s earlier 19th minute foul had warranted a yellow card and the risk of keeping him on the field may have paid off for the time but it ultimately cost the team. Milerock may not have sported ‘lady luck’ Wednesday night, as several of their
attempts came close to scoring, the closest of which came after a deflection by the HiTech keeper right into the path of the attacker who let loose a cannon onto the upright. Grove, on the other hand, had their fair share of misses before Domini Garnett’s 90th minute strike, the closest coming from a set piece which tricked the wall into jumping while the passed off ball could have been slotted in from ten
yards, but instead was passed back outside the area. Garnett’s goal came contrary to the side’s aerial style of play throughout the game as a complete and precise string of ground passes caught the opposition’s defence at sea before slotting past the outstretched goalie. With that result, the Group A still sees Winners Connection leading with four points, while Miler-
ock sit second thanks to three points and a superior goal difference over Grove. Northern Rangers have one point. In game two, Western Tigers took an early lead in their game against Eagles United, Andrew Murray’s 4th minute guiding header rocketing past the goalie. Though they pushed on for more goals, the score line remained unchanged when
the final whistle sounded. In the B group, Western Tigers have assumed a commanding lead with six points over their nearest competitors Eagles with three. In the next round of matches on Sunday evening Mahaica Determinators and Riddim Squad will clash from 18:30hrs while Ann’s Grove will face Pouderoyen from 20:30hrs at the Victoria ground.
Bolt rules out 2018 Commonwealth Games swansong (REUTERS) - Jamaican sprint great Usain Bolt has no plans to extend his career beyond this year's world championships in London and has ruled out a return to Australia for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Bolt, who completed a 'treble treble' of 100m, 200m and 4x100m Olympic titles at the 2016 Rio Games, had his 2008 relay gold stripped last month
after teammate Nesta Carter's re-tested sample showed traces of a banned substance. The 30-year-old Bolt also anchored the Jamaican relay team to his only Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow in 2014 and organisers had hoped that he might extend his career to the next edition on the Gold Coast in April 2018. "To come out here next
season, to really train as hard as I need to get to the level I need to win, it's not going to happen," Bolt told reporters in Melbourne yesterday. Bolt will lead an international team of ‘All Stars’ in the Nitro Athletics series in the Australian city against four other teams representing England, China, New Zealand and Japan. The first meeting is on

East/West Bank Demerara tournament begins tonight
FOOTBALL teams on the East and West Bank of Demerara will get a chance to be a part of the Guinness Greatest in the Streets football action when it rolls into their turf this evening. Set for the Pouderoyen tarmac, the second leg of the championship this year will see 35 teams over the course of six nights. The first two nights will be knock-out, the other two round robin and the final two set for the semi-fi-
nals and final. Speaking at yesterday morning’s launch Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste stated, “We encourage all participating and non-participating communities to come out and support their teams. “Compared to last year, we have 20 more teams taking part in this year’s tournament and this speaks to the continued success of the tournament,” Baptiste added. Meanwhile, organiser
Travis Bess contended that the tournament’s opening night will feature 10 games, two of which are qualifiers while the remaining eight will be straight knock-outs. The winners of the tournament will pocket $450 000, with second-placed finishers pocketing $50 000, third-placers $100 000 and fourth-placers $50 000. The opening night’s matches will commence at 19:00hrs.
