Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Salah (from left to right) are the nominees.

Juventus centre-back Benatia, 31, won his fourth consecutive league title this year - two with Bayern Munich and two with Juve - and captained Morocco at this summer’s World Cup. Napoli defender Koulibaly, 27, played his part in his club’s battle with Juve for the Serie A title, including

the winner against the eventual champions in the run-in. He played all 270 minutes for Senegal in the World Cup. Liverpool forward Mane, 26, also played in all of Senegal’s World Cup games, captaining his country in two and scoring against Japan. He was the joint-second top scorer in last season’s Champions League - with 10 goals

for Liverpool, including one in the 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in the final. Atletico Madrid midfielder Partey, 25, established himself as a first-team regular for Diego Simeone’s side, including a late appearance as a substitute in the Europa League final win over Marseille. He scored in international friendlies for Ghana

against Japan and Iceland. Liverpool forward Salah, 26, won the Premier League Golden Boot with 32 goals in May and, like Mane, scored 10 Champions League strikes in their run to the final. He scored both of Egypt’s World Cup goals - 40% of their all-time total at the tournament. (BBC Sport)

Waldron, McPherson lead GDF to Windies bowlers get in match practice in drawn two-day game 40-over win against Ace Warriors C H I T TA G O N G , B a n gladesh, (CMC) – Pace spearhead Shannon Gabriel took two wickets as West Indies bowlers got in crucial match practice on Monday’s final day of the drawn two-day match against the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI. Replying to West Indies’ overnight 303 for seven declared, the BCB XI finished on 232 for five at the MA Aziz Stadium, with Soumya Sarkar top-scoring with 78 and Shadman Islam getting 73. Mohammad Mithun chipped in with 27 while Najmul Hossain got 21. Gabriel, who will lead the Windies attack in the absence of injured skipper Jason Holder, claimed two

for 24 from eight overs. West Indies toiled in vain for an early breakthrough as openers Sarkar and Shadman frustrated with a stand of 126.

The left-handed Sarkar, with 10 Tests to his name, produced an attacking knock with 10 fours and three sixes in 103 balls and nearly 2-½ hours at the crease. Shadman, meanwhile, also a left-hander but who is uncapped, faced 169 deliveries in just over 3-¾ hours and counted 10 fours and a six. Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican eventually accounted for Sarkar but Shadman combined with Najmul in a 47-run, second wicket partnership. Both batsmen fell within five overs of each other before Gabriel grabbed two wickets late on to find his touch ahead of the opening Test starting Thursday.

AN all-round performance from Damian Waldron and solid batting by Quacey McPherson propelled the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to a seven-wicket win over the Ace Warriors Cricket Club when action in the New Building Society second division 40-Over cricket competition continued on Saturday. GDF won the toss at the Camp Ayanganna ground and bowled first, but Raul Enmore defied the soldiers. The opener struck three sixes and three fours in a top score of 55; his half-century proved the best resistance before Waldron was introduced into the attack. The off-spinner got wickets in his second and third overs to peg back

the visitors. In total, he grabbed five wickets for 20 runs from eight overs to restrict the visitors to 122 in 37 overs. Enmore’s only support was from Selwin Collier. Batting at number eight, Collier struck three fours and

a six in a score of 29. GDF lost their opening pair in the chase. Medium pacer Murtland Ward got the wicket of the dangerous Leon Andrews in his first over, while D. Ross fell a few overs later for three, which left the score on 13-2 before Waldron joined McPherson. The pair added 108 runs for the third wicket and would have carried their team to victory if Waldron did not look to play an expansive shot with the aim of pushing his team over the finish line and himself to another half century. He went for a well-played 47 (5x4s, 1x6). McPherson, who struck 10 fours, finished unbeaten on 62 as the GDF reached the target in 21.2 overs.

South Africa end with win but Bangladesh leave empty-handed GROS ISLET, St Lucia, (CMC) – South Africa held off a spirited Bangladesh as they wrapped up an otherwise disappointing ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup campaign with a 30-run win here Sunday night. Once again, the Proteas batting struggled and they could only mount a meagre 109 for nine off their 20 overs with Marizanne Kapp getting 25 and opener Lizelle Lee, 21. Salma Khatun, who bowled the new ball, finished with three for 20 while fellow off-spinner Khadiza-Tul Kubra picked up two for 18. In reply, Bangladesh were restricted to 79 for five off their 20 overs despite Rumana Ahmed’s unbeaten 34 off 40 balls. The defeat was Bangladesh’s fourth straight leaving them bottom of Group A while South Africa’s win was South Africa’s Faye Tunnicliffe looks back to see her stumps rattled during only their second, which was good enough for a third the final preliminary match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup against place finish in the group. With both teams eliminated from semi-final contention, there was only pride to play for but neither side managed to lift their game significantly. Sent in, South Africa were cruising at 60 for one in the ninth over behind a 35-run, second wicket partnership between Kapp and skipper Dane van Niekerk (17). But as has been the case in the tournament, once Kapp was well caught in the deep top-edging a slog at Rumana, South Africa once again capitulated, losing eight wickets for 49 runs. Despite the small target, Bangladesh never looked like seriously threatening, and were already facing an uphill task when they crawled to 33 for three at the halfway stage of the innings. Rumana resisted, striking two fours, but the knock was never likely to change the outcome as South Africa’s bowlers restricted any free scoring.
