All systems in place for Region Five RACE

OFFICIALS of Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) have given the assurance that all systems are in place for an educational, entertaining and memorable Regional Agricultural and Commercial Exhibition (RACE) to be held at the playground at Paradise Village, West Coast Berbice and scheduled for September 28 and 29. During a meeting, coordinator of the event Ms Carol Smith Joseph, disclosed that 28 agricultural and commercial agencies within the region have indicated their interest in participating in the RACE, which is being held under the theme: “Sustaining a green economy through food security.” These include agro-processors, crops and livestock farmers, agricultural machine outlets, fast food outlets, agencies such as Food For The Poor, the National Insurance Scheme, agricultural agencies such as the MMA/ADA, GUYSUCO, the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) and commercial entities such as the Region Five branch of the Republic Bank, among others. Cultural entertainment during the event will include presentations by popular entertainer such as Bunty, Kenroy and Onikha Jospeh, steelband music to be provided by the Guyana Police Force steelband and by the Mahaicony Secondary School; African and tassa drumming and presentations from the Moraikobai Youth Group. Regional Executive Officer Ovid Morrison disclosed that Miss Earth Guyana 2018, first runner-up Miss Luann Pellew and second runner-up Akisha Payne, will be special invitees at the opening ceremony on the evening of September 28 next. He said too that he had been assured by the divisional commander of the police division that police support would be provided to ensure security of all who participate as exhibitors and visitors. Booths will be provided by the regional administration. These booths will be constructed by the Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre (MTVTC) free of cost, as their contribution to the success of the two-day event.
Linden murder suspect handed over to police TRAVIS Hazel, called ‘Fifty,’ who allegedly bludgeoned Leroy Barron to death on Sunday was handed over to police at the Mackenzie Police Station by his mother, Debra Gilkes, on Monday evening. The 31-year-old businessman of Lot 24 Silvercity Wismar was arrested but is not assisting with investigations as he said he was advised by his lawyer not to answer any questions. An autopsy performed on the body of Barron determined that he died due to brain haemorrhaging and blunt trauma to the head. On Sunday, Hazel allegedly dealt Barron several lashes to his body with a piece of wood, which resulted in his death. The
