Juventus paying Real Madrid 100 million euros for Ronaldo MADRID (Reuters) - Cristiano Ronaldo has joined Italian champions Juventus from Real Madrid on a fouryear contract for 100 million euros (26.55 million pounds) signalling the end of nine years at the Spanish giants filled with trophies and goals. The two European giants on Tuesday announced the much-anticipated deal for the five-times world player of the year who joined Real from Manchester United in 2008 for a then world record 80 million pounds ($106 million). The 33-year-old Portugal forward is the Spanish club’s all-time top scorer with 451 goals in all competitions and won two La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies with them. The signing of the latest Ballon d’Or winner and top scorer in the Champions League for the last six seasons represents a major coup for Juve, who have had a stranglehold on the Italian title since 2012 but have not won Europe’s top prize since 1996. The signing also strikes a blow for the profile of Serie A against La Liga, which has now lost two of its three most famous players in the last year after Paris St Germain signed

Neymar from Barcelona for a world record fee last August. Real paid tribute to Ronaldo, who is the all-time top scorer in the Champions League, in a lengthy statement on their website and said the player had asked to be transferred.

Cristiano Ronaldo has completed his move to Juventus.

“Real Madrid announces that it has agreed to transfer Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus FC due to the will and desire expressed by the player,” the European champions said. “Today Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude to a player that has

been a role model in commitment, hard work, responsibility, talent and a desire to always exceed himself.” REMARKABLE CONSISTENCY Despite his remarkable consistency, Ronaldo often

appeared unsettled at Real and had threatened to leave on several occasions, first airing his dissatisfaction with the club’s hierarchy in 2012 by saying in a post-game interview: “I’m sad and the club know why”. Reports emerged last year that Ronaldo was again upset with the club’s President Florentino Perez over a pay dispute and was intent on leaving, although he stayed on to lead the club to a third successive Champions League triumph. Ronaldo, however, soured the celebrations immediately after the 3-1 win over Liverpool in the final in Kiev by indicating he had decided to leave, saying in a post-match interview “It was beautiful to play for Real Madrid.” T h e P o r t u g a l i n t e rnational scored two goals against Juventus in Real’s 4-1 win in the 2017 Champions League final and earlier this season struck a jaw-dropping bicycle kick against the Italians in a 3-0 win in a quarter-final firstleg game in Turin which prompted Juve supporters to give him a standing ovation. The Portuguese converted a stoppage-time penalty in the second leg to knock the Italians out 4-3 on aggregate.

Kerber to face Jelena Ostapenko in semi-finals

Angelique Kerber

ELEVENTH seed Angelique Kerber reached the Wimbledon semi-finals with a 6-3 7-5 win over Russia’s Daria Kasatkina. Two-time Grand Slam winner Kerber, the highest-ranked seed left in the women’s competition, dominated the first set as Kasatkina struggled with nerves. Fourteenth seed Kasatkina, 21, grew in confidence but Kerber came through to win on her seventh match point. The German, 30, will face Latvian 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday after she beat Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-4. In the other half of the draw, Serena Williams is through to her 11th Wimbledon semi-final after beating Camila Giorgi in three sets and she will face Julia Gorges, who beat Kiki Bertens 3-6 7-5 6-1 to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final. After taking the first set, Kerber broke to go 3-1 up in the second before Kasatkina levelled for 3-3 only for another double fault to put the German back in control. The Russian, who thrilled the crowd with some superb returns and passing shots, broke back again for 4-4 but her opponent replied immediately. With Kerber serving for a place in the last four, Kasatkina earned two break points with a forehand and levelled the scores before again failing to hold her serve. (BBC Sport)

(REUTERS) - Pakistan batsman Ahmed Shehzad has tested positive for a banned substance and will be charged later on Tuesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said. The PCB announced in June that a player had failed a doping test but refused to reveal the name of the team member or the charges they faced until a chemical report was completed, as per the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) regulations. “Independent Review Board Report on doping case has been received by PCB. Cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has tested positive for a banned substance. PCB will issue charge sheet today,” the governing body said on its verified Twitter account. Shehzad, 26, has struggled to nail down a place in the Pakistan squad in recent years but played in the twomatch Twenty20 series at Scotland in June, where he scored a combined 38 runs as the visitors recorded commanding victories.
