`Six Head’Lewis steps up training for Mullings FORMER world welterweight champion Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis yesterday put into overdrive preparation for his first fight in six years after sparring a total of eight rounds at the Forgotten Youth Foundation gym in Albouystown. Lewis mixed gloves with amateur bantamweight champion Delon Charles, Dexter Gonsalves and Diwani Lampkin and later confessed that he is slowly chipping away at the ring rust.
“I did eight rounds today and it was cool. I have not been in the ring for years and it will take some time for me to get back to being the old Six Head,” the former WBA champion declared. He is expected back at the Keith Bazilio owned gym this afternoon, to continue sharpening skills for his upcoming ring date. Lewis, known as `The Albouystown Cyclone’ won the WBA title in February 2001 with a seventh round stoppage of James Page.
His last fight was in October 2008 and ended in a split decision defeat to Howard Eastman. Now aged 44, and coming out of years of inactivity, he is about to face Jamaican Sakima Mullings, who is 12 years his junior. The fight is scheduled for February 28. Mullings defeated four Guyanese fighters in the last three years prompting Lewis to step in to stop the “eye pass” “I think everything is coming around well. I have
a good team around me and I will be in good shape for the fight,” the former world champion added. Lewis is being trained by Joseph Murray with assistance from Sebert Blake and Wincell Thomas. Since 2011 Mullings has defeated Winston Pompey, Howard Eastman, Revlon Lake and Derrick Richmond. The CABOFE and Jamaica welterweight champion has chalked up 18 fights during the time of Lewis’ inactivity.

enced Dwayne Bravo after just 19 months in charge and also dropping him from the squad. Big-hitter Kieron Pollard has also been dropped from the one-day squad. He averages 25 from 91 matches. “We have decided to introduce a few new players to the international stage and once they deliver the performances we are looking for we believe we have the right kind of foundation to take the game forward,” chief selector Clive Lloyd noted. “We are in a situation where we want to go up the ladder in all three formats and aim to form teams which will take us there.” Carter has campaigned extensively with the West Indies A team in recent years, and has been knocking at the door of the senior team for some time. Brathwaite, meanwhile, who played one ODI and a Twenty20 for West Indies three years ago, has found his way back into the squad, after captaining the A team in recent series. He is a powerful lower order batsman, can produce explosive spells with his lively pace, and is regarded as a future captain.
Narsingh Deonarine Deonarine, also called up on Saturday to replace the injured Assad Fudadin in the Test squad in South Africa, is back in the one-day set-up a year after playing the last of his 29 ODIs. The left-hander has been rewarded for his excellent form in the early rounds of the WICB Professional Cricket League, where he has amassed 306 runs at an average of 61 with two hundreds. Fast bowler Kemar Roach’s ankle injury has ruled him out of the oneday line-up, with the WICB set to name his replacement shortly. Former captain Sammy has also been dropped from the ODI squad but remains in charge of the Twenty20 unit which was also announced Saturday. Notably missing are leg-
spinner Samuel Badree and left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie, both of whom are injured. “We have some very good cricketers, who have done very well in the T20 format. We will again be led by Darren Sammy, who led us to a World Cup. He has been the leader for quite a while and I’m sure he will galvanize the players to look to win the series,” Lloyd said. “We will be without Badree and Santokie, who have both been excellent in the bowling department for us, but we have again introduced some new faces and expect them to acquit themselves very well.” Brathwaite and Holder have been included in the T20 squad along with Bravo and Pollard, with talismanic opener Chris Gayle also named subject to passing a fitness test. The left-handed Gayle opted out of the current Test tour with a back injury. Barbados off-spinner Ashley Nurse, meanwhile, has been called up three years after his only two T20s. Champion off-spinner Sunil Narine, under international scrutiny over his action, has not been picked
Carlos Brathwaite in either squad. West Indies face South Africa in three Twenty20s next month, prior to the start of the ODI series.
