Second Stag Beer Super 16 knockout football launched By Stephan Sookram THE second instalment of the Stag Beer Super-16 knock out football competition was yesterday launched as a joint initiative among the East Bank Football Association (EBFA), West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) and the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA). The tournament which is set to commence on December 16 at the Leonora Sports Facility, will feature a 1.5 million dollar purse to the winner, while the secondplaced team will take home 500,000, third place 300,000 and fourth place 200,000. Tucville Secondary won the toss and decided to bat first. However, they could only get to 98-8 when their 20 overs expired. Only Rondave Noel and Godfrey Phillip offered any resistance with 25 and 21 against Qumar Torrington who finished with 4-16. Charlestown Secondary then made light work of their target, finishing the game with a six in the 16th over as they stormed into the final. Torrington showed his all-round ability when he returned to stroke an unbeaten 26. Charlestown Secondary will now play Lodge Secondary in the South Georgetown Zone final on a date to be announced.

Mumbai and New Delhi will host the two semi-finals, while Kolkata’s Eden Gardens will stage the final of the March 8-April 3 tournament, to be played across eight venues in India, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Friday. Defending men’s champions Sri Lanka have been placed in Group One of the Super 10 stage along with South Africa, 2010 winners England, 2012 champions West Indies and a qualifier. Group Two will include India, 2009 champions Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and a second qualifier. “We, as hosts, are fully prepared to organise one of the most entertaining spectacles in world cricket,” The Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur said at the launch ceremony. “India has hosted World Cups in 1987, 1996 and 2011.
