Intro
Talent is a higher than average ability to make or do things that others consider particularly beautiful or edifying. Not everyone is born with the same amount of talent, although it may be that yours has yet to develop and is just budding or has not yet manifested itself at all.
It may surprise both Dutch and foreign readers that GUP Magazine has published another thick yearbook of Dutch photography talent. The Netherlands now has a reputation to uphold when it comes to contemporary photography and its people take up the challenge with enthusiasm. Established, emerging and aspiring Dutch photographers win international prizes, take part in major exhibitions and appear in/on leading magazines, websites and blogs. During Paris Photo (the world’s largest and most important annual photo fair) and related off-fairs, critics, curators, publishers and collectors flock to the participating Dutch galleries and photo book publishers in order to ‘discover’ the latest Dutch talent.
The breeding ground that the Netherlands has become is small but densely populated. Would-be photographers can choose from at least ten certified photography programs, within an independent department or as part of a visual arts education. Many also fall into the profession as autodidacts – not an uncommon occurrence in the past either. As a result, several hundred new professional image makers join their predecessors each year. Add to this the thriving Dutch museum and gallery scene, the support available to aspiring artists and the wide coverage given to photography in the Dutch press, and you understand how relatively favourable the climate here (still?) is.
The picture was not always so rosy. It was only in the early 1990s that this landscape began to emerge, with the initial successes of Anton Corbijn, Rineke Dijkstra and Inez van Lamsweerde. Other Dutch photographers before them had enjoyed fame abroad, but not on a large international scale and that fame often went unnoticed at home (incidentally, the Netherlands has a tradition of artists gaining recognition in their own country only after achieving success elsewhere).
