2024 CELEBRATION FOCUSES ON INVESTING IN WOMEN

Despite taking large strides forward in gender equality, women still fall behind men financially.

For instance, men are three times more likely to get a business loan than women. Research also has shown that women-owned businesses typically are approved for lower loan amounts than their male-owned counterparts.

As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, UN Women is drawing attention to these disparities and rallying around the call to “Invest in women: Accelerate progress.”

“One of the key challenges in achieving gender equality by 2030 is an alarming lack of financing, with a staggering $360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender-equality measures,” the organization states on its website, www. unwomen.org. “The time for change is now!”

LACK OF FINANCING AFFECTS FEMALES’ FUTURES

While progress has been made, according to UN Women, females still face major roadblocks to achieving equal economic participation. For one thing, studies show that women-owned businesses do not apply for loans and grants as often or as aggressively as male-owned companies. When they do pursue outside funding, female business owners tend to ask for lower loan amounts — on average about $35,000 less than men, according to Fundera’s “The State of Online Small Business Lending: Spotlight on Women Entrepreneurs” report.

“Additionally, women took out more expensive loans compared to men, which affects business development, as it shrinks the amount of total capital women have to grow their business,” according to the National Community Reinvestment Coalition. “The (Fundera) report noted that about 30 percent of women took out short-term loans,

which have higher interest rates and lower eligibility standards, compared to 20 percent of men.”

WOMEN: THE ECONOMIC ENGINE THAT COULD

Nonetheless, women remain an unrivaled economic driver, accounting for 39.1 percent of all businesses (over 14 million), employing 12.2 million workers and generating $2.7 trillion in revenue, according the 2024 Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Business Report.

It is another testament to female resilience that during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite lockdowns and widespread closures, women still launched more businesses than they closed. Wells Fargo also reports that women-owned businesses expanded their workforces and increased their revenue while men’s numbers dropped.

And even outside of crisis situations, data suggests that women are superior investors, as they take a slowand -steady approach focused on avoiding mistakes and overreactions. One Wells Fargo study showed that as individual investors, women are less impulsive traders, hold fewer risky stocks and are better at staying the course than men.

INVESTING IN WOMEN: ‘A HUMAN RIGHTS IMPERATIVE’

As capable as they are, women still need support to reach their full potential. UN Women points out that females are disproportionately affected by geopolitical conflict, natural disasters, economic turmoil and other crises — which makes improving their financial picture so critical. Without change, the organization warns, more than 342 million women and girls could be living below the poverty line by 2030.

“Investing in women is a human rights imperative and cornerstone for building inclusive societies,” UN Women states in its call to action. “Progress for women benefits us all.”

Crafting dreams

Bourn to Create’s Sarah Blackbourn inspires with DIY lifestyle

Aquick scroll through Sarah Blackbourn’s social media shows a woman in constant

The talent behind Bourn to Create always keeps her hands occupied — whether she’s sanding, cutting, drilling, measuring, painting, cooking, or collecting eggs from her handmade chicken coop.

“I am a doer,” says the married Memphis, Tennessee, native. “I don’t like to sit still very long.”

In fact, Blackbourn has a background in athletics and kinesiology — the science of movement — and was a personal trainer, a basketball and lacrosse coach and a physical therapy clinic manager, among other things, before becoming a full-time artisan and content creator. What began as a small wood-art business blossomed into a full-time occupation.

“Most of it came naturally to me because of my work history, so I wouldn’t change that a bit,” Blackbourn says. “All of these (elements) come together through my content, in which I can teach others how to DIY and share about homesteading and life in Mississippi.”

FINDING HER CALLING

Although she’s always had the aptitude and desire to build things, Blackbourn lacked the space and equipment until recent years. A creative at heart, she and her best friend once started a side hustle called Whale Said to make enough money to travel. They sold their handmade jewelry and home decor items at farmers markets and pop-up shops across San Diego. In 2020, having previously lived on the Gulf Coast, Blackbourn and her husband, Marshall, returned to Biloxi to be closer to family.

When the couple bought their home, Blackbourn started making a large piece of wood art to hang on the wall — buying tools specifically for that project. She learned the basics of using the tools from her husband and by watching other creators.

“I fell in love with it immediately,” Blackbourn recalls. “I said from the very first day, this is what I need to be doing — making wood art and doing DIY projects while sharing them on social media.”

After wearing many hats throughout her working life, Blackbourn was well prepared to juggle the many roles

COVER STORY
motion.

ADVICE TO ASPIRING DIYERS

“Pick a beginner-level project you’ve been wanting to do. Educate yourself on how to do it by watching others like me. Get ideas and research what tools you need. Only buy the tools you need for that project, and you do not need the most expensive ones; buy them secondhand if you can, and simply do it. If you love it, find more projects to do with those tools. And if you are open to sharing, I challenge you to share your journey on social media. Start recording little pieces of your work and posting them. People will love it whether you have 10 followers or 1 million.“ – Sarah Blackbourn

of her new endeavor, from being her own videographer, photographer and website designer to handling all the shipping, administration and inventory. Between the array of skills she brought to Bourn to Create and her determination to develop new ones, it didn’t take long for the fledgling artisan to be taken seriously.

For instance, after just a few months of making wood art and selling her work online, Blackbourn was accepted as a vendor in the Peter Anderson Arts Festival in Ocean Springs.

“I knew it was a long shot, as they can be very selective on their artist vendors,” she says. “I have now participated three years in a row and have experienced how the community comes together for such a big event. The support for local artists on the Coast is unreal.”

SENSATIONAL TRANSFORMATIONS

When she remodeled her husband’s office as a surprise, Blackbourn shared her progress each day on TikTok and had an audience of thousands cheering her on. The room originally just contained a couple of tables, but Blackbourn overhauled it to suit her spouse’s Western style. She painted, created a built-in desk, made floating shelves, designed and built another desk, repurposed end tables and added a large piece of custom wood art.

“He came home to a completely transformed space and was totally surprised,” Blackbourn says. “Those office videos have over 15 million views across my socials with such positive words of encouragement. That’s when I realized I could make content-creating a full-time job.”

Another standout moment from Blackbourn’s craftswoman career came in 2022, when her best friend relocated to North Dakota while also expecting a new baby. Over the course of three weeks, the women worked together to make her friend’s new home feel special. They painted the kitchen cabinets, resurfaced the countertops, changed out lighting, created accent walls in the living room and transformed the entryway and guest bath. A spare bedroom became a library featuring a full wall of shelves.

“It’s amazing what you can do with a space on a very low budget if you have the knowledge and tools,” Blackbourn says. “And if you don’t have the knowledge yet, just watch videos on YouTube. there is so much free content and tutorials available. We got so much quality time working on this, and I gained skills that I didn’t have before.”

CHALLENGES AND REWARDS

As Blackbourn’s own confidence has grown, she’s inspired many of her fans, mostly women, to tackle projects they once

believed were beyond their capabilities.

“They have shared stories about how they’ve lost their partner, or their spouse is deployed, and they didn’t realize they can do these things on their own until they saw my videos,” she says. “I love when people reach out to me because they are working on a specific project of mine that inspired them and ask questions about a step, or simply share pictures of their versions. These moments are what keep me going.”

Of course, not every project can be deemed a success. Blackbourn admits that a few of her pieces were “complete misses.” Sometimes the design she envisions doesn’t translate well to the wood — at least at first.

“I learned to set those down, walk away and give myself some grace; nobody is perfect,” she says. “I will always come back later and turn it into something else, which has oddly become some of my best work. Never trash your failed projects; they can become something else one day!”

Blackbourn counts her chicken coops among her favorite projects. She built the first last February, followed by a second, larger coop that she crafted with her neighbor last fall.

“This was absolutely the most challenging and rewarding project because I was able to work through many steps I had never done before, like cutting corrugated roof metal; but the reward was giving the chickens a safe place to live, watching them move in, get settled and start laying eggs,” she says. “They bring me joy every day.”

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

Having spent many years in the “hustle and bustle,” Blackbourn appreciates her slower, simpler pace of home life since moving to the Coast. As for what comes next, she says she’d love to continue to grow her channels and expand her own homestead until her family outgrows it.

“We have dreamed of living on a larger farm with more land and animals one day,” Blackbourn says. “When that happens, get ready, because my projects will be endless!”

Had you asked her three years ago what her life would look like, Blackbourn never would have imagined that she’d be remodeling rooms, building coops, tending to a flock of chickens, working with brands and sharing her lifestyle online. While she didn’t expect people to be so interested in her work and content, she is enjoying every minute.

“I’m proud to be exactly where we are,” she says. “I love this little moment in time.”

The timeless beauty of art deco made a grand return, bringing with it a sophisticated color palette, bold geometric patterns, luxurious materials, symmetry and breathtaking chandeliers. This revival promises to add a touch of

classic glam to contemporary interiors. Inspired by the opulence of the 1920s and 1930s, this trend introduces a sense of drama and luxury, striking a perfect balance between modern sophistication and timeless elegance and making it an ideal choice for those who want to infuse their homes with grandeur and refinement.

ECLECTIC FUSION

Minimalism is falling behind in popularity, and maximalism has taken a front seat. This approach celebrates an eclectic mix of patterns, colors, textures and furniture styles, offering a bold departure from minimalism and a canvas for personalized storytelling.

RETRO CHARM

The 70s made a bold comeback, infusing interiors with a hodgepodge of vibrant colors, pastels, bold patterns, rattan and wicker and a delightful blend of square and rounded furniture. This trend promises to infuse spaces with an irresistible retro charm. With a focus on creating a lively and inviting atmosphere, the 70s boldness trend brings a sense of playfulness and nostalgia to contemporary interiors, encouraging a harmonious blend of textures and colors .

DETAILS AND SENSORY DELIGHTS

Detailed hardware and fabric-covered furniture emerged as focal points, alongside the use of natural forms, arches, fluted furniture, plush velvet, leathers, vinyl, chenille, houndstooth, statement marble, funky tile and a mix of woods. This trend reflects a growing appreciation for intricate details and tactile experiences within interior design. From the allure of statement marble to the cozy embrace of plush velvet, these elements provide a rich tapestry of textures, inviting homeowners to explore a world of sensory delights within their

Then it’s time for a transformation — and there’s no simpler way get out of a design rut than by playing with color. 2024’s colors of the year, as chosen by several major paint brands, run the gamut from blissful blue to a soft black — and all can make your tired spaces feel brand new. Here are the shades having a moment this year:

According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, this velvety peach tone “echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection. We chose a color radiant with warmth and modern elegance.”

VALSPAR: RENEW BLUE

SHERWIN-WILLIAMS: UPWARD

Sherwin-Williams describes its color of the year as a “sunny-day shade for spaces brimming with positive energy, creative thinking and total contentment.”

BENJAMIN MOORE: BLUE NOVA

Benjamin Moore says “violet and blue come together” in this sophisticated, sumptuous hue.

UNIQUE WALL COVERINGS

Wall coverings took center stage with an array of options, including landscapes, florals, geometrics and murals or wallpapers, offering a versatile canvas for self-expression. This trend represents a celebration of artistry and individuality, allowing homeowners to transform their walls into captivating visual narratives that reflect their personal tastes and passions. Whether it’s a bold geometric statement or a serene landscape, wall coverings offer a unique opportunity to infuse spaces with character.

REFLECTIVE SURFACES

Irregular and arched mirrors, polished metals, matte black and white, textured and sculptural materials, stone, wood, natural materials, marble, colored glass, and the elegance of scallops and ruffles promise to redefine the art of reflection within interiors. Reflective surfaces and materials have emerged as a key theme, offering an opportunity to play with light, space and visual intrigue. From the timeless allure of polished metals to the understated elegance of matte textures, these elements elevate the art of reflection within living spaces, adding depth and dimension.

2024 COLORS OF THE YEAR

GLIDDEN: LIMITLESS

In stark contrast to last year’s pick, a bold, teal shade called Vining Ivy, Glidden’s top color of 2024 is Limitless a fresh, warm hue that Ashley McCollum, color expert for Glidden, suggests as an alternative to gray.

BEHR: CRACKED PEPPER

After choosing a soft white called Blank Canvas last year, Behr went in the opposite direction in 2024 with Cracked Pepper. This versatile, yet dramatic, black shade “evokes a sense of confidence and individuality that we want all of our customers to feel after completing a project,” says Jodi Allen, Behr’s global chief marketing officer.

WARM, RICH HUES

A color palette of warmth and expression is trending in 2024. Warm whites, shades of browns, reds, blues and dark, warm grays and blacks were observed to dominate the color landscape, offering a rich palette for interior design enthusiasts. This diverse palette presents countless possibilities for creating inviting and harmonious living spaces, allowing for the infusion of emotion, character and depth through color.

EMBRACING SELF-EXPRESSION:

Home exterior trends blend beauty and function

When it comes to exterior design, we are witnessing an exciting burst of colors and innovative choices. The top exterior trends offer the perfect blend of beautiful aesthetics and practical functionality, ranging from sustainable choices to bold colors and mixed materials. There is a continued interest in timeless designs such as farmhouse and mid-century modern elevations that seamlessly blend comfort with charm.

Homeowners are embracing boldness and self-expression, creating curb appeal that showcases their unique style. Here’s a glimpse into the trends that are causing a stir.

OF-THE-MOMENT COLORS

• Playful Pastels: Say goodbye to muted tones! Pastel shades like soft pinks, mint greens and powder blues are gaining popularity for exterior walls. These colors add a touch of whimsy and exude a sense of freshness and modernity. They also embody coastal living vibes.

• Moody Hues: Dark and moody shades are making a comeback, giving homes an air of sophistication and elegance. Deep charcoal, navy and forest green create an inviting ambiance, making a bold statement.

• Earthy Neutrals: Timeless, and always fashionable, earthy neutrals like taupe, creamy beige and subtle gray continue to dominate color palettes. These hues provide a versatile backdrop for architectural styles.

• Deep Reds: Embrace the spotlight with captivating ruby hues

that are sure to turn heads. Whether it’s a lively red brick or a bold crimson front door, these selections inject vibrancy and personality into your facade, making an eye-catching statement.

• Contemporary Simplicity: The timeless grace and elegance of white exteriors endures, offering a modern aesthetic. My three favorite exterior whites are Pure White, Alabaster and Greek Villa, all by Sherwin-Williams. When combined with clean lines and minimalist design elements, white creates a look that’s both current and classic.

CONTEMPORARY BRICK CHOICES

• Rustic Whitewash: Whitewashed brick exteriors are gaining popularity because of their appeal and versatility.

This choice harmonizes well with color schemes, making it a preferred option for those aiming to establish an inviting atmosphere.

• Blending Colors and Textures: Mixing different styles and colors of bricks to create a unique facade is a trend gaining attention. Incorporating red, white or gray bricks adds dimension and visual allure, resulting in a fresh exterior with a one-of-a-kind feel.

SOPHISTICATED SIDING

The latest trends in siding colors are leaning toward warm neutrals, offwhites, deep greens and blues. Achieving

a balanced and appealing exterior for your home involves pairing neutral tones with earthy hues, occasionally introducing vibrant accents. Textured fiber cement panels offer durability and low maintenance while contributing to sustainable home design. There are several pre-painted options, or those you can paint any color you choose.

SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING

Homeowners are now interested in adding eco-friendly landscaping techniques by incorporating native plants, rain gardens and hardscapes that

allow water to seep through. Moreover, they are incorporating water-efficient irrigation systems and solar-powered lighting.

Whether you gravitate toward pastels, embrace atmospheric shades or stick to classic neutrals, the goal is to express your unique style and create a home that radiates personality and charm. Make a lasting impression with your choices! Just a friendly reminder: if your community has a homeowners’ association, check for approval before making any exterior changes.

Making outdoor life more livable: WAYS TO TRANSFORM YOUR EXTERIOR SPACES 5

2) MAKE IT PERSONAL

Landscape design firm Yardzen has dubbed 2024 “The year of the eclectic yard.” This reflects a trend toward more customization and personal expression. There’s no need to feel confined by convention; instead, use your imagination and build a backyard that’s tailored to your needs and lifestyle. If you’d rather have a hibachi than a standard grill or a plunge pool instead of a fire pit, then dare to be different — and make no apologies.

Especially when you live in a warm, balmy climate like the Coast, outdoor spaces become extensions of your home. They’re the settings for family celebrations, get-togethers with friends and moments of solitary bliss. As we head into spring, it’s the perfect time to spruce up our patios and porches and make improvements we can enjoy for many seasons to come.

What sorts of upgrades should you consider? Here are some of the top outdoor living trends for 2024:

1) GET COZY

Bid adieu to stiff, uncomfortable plastic seating. Homeowners are swapping outdated exterior furniture for plush, comfy chairs and sectionals ideal for entertaining. And you don’t have to sacrifice comfort and style for durability and practicality. Modular outdoor furniture has become popular due to its versatility and ability to be easily rearranged.

3) KEEP IT REAL

In this same vein, handmade items and artisan creations are replacing mass-produced items, infusing outdoor spaces with character, luxury and charm. Homeowners also are ditching synthetic decor in favor of natural materials and fibers like rattan, stone, wood and terracotta. This shift is not only a win for creativity and taste, but also for sustainability.

4) SET THE MOOD

Lighting is often overlooked, but it plays a crucial role in creating ambience and shaping how a space looks and feels. Want a warm, vintage glow or a contemporary radiance? You can achieve whatever vibe you desire with the right bulbs and fixtures. Energy-efficient LED lights are available that can withstand the elements and have smart controllers that let you adjust the color and brightness. And don’t limit yourself just because you’re outside. Pendant lights, lanterns and sconces can lend your outdoor space a touch of glam.

5) WELCOME WELLNESS

Patios and porches became our retreats during the COVID-19 pandemic, and years later, they remain our happy places. Wellness is now a priority when it comes to designing exterior spaces, with builders fielding requests for features like yoga rooms, rain showers, sensory gardens, therapeutic spa pools and saunas. This emphasis on wellness highlights the role of the outdoors in promoting relaxation, mental health and physical wellbeing.

Whether you’re a a nature lover or just want to incorporate more outdoor living into your lifestyle, you can design a rejuvenating, luxurious outdoor space that suits your wants and needs. Don’t be afraid to extend your living space beyond your home’s walls and discover the joy of being on a staycation every day.

THERE’S PLENTY TO LOVE ABOUT THE 2024 HOUSING MARKET

2023 was a year of rising rates and few listings. No one can say for sure, but it seems that 2024 may bring rate relief and more homes coming to market. Owners may benefit from refinancing, and buyers who act before everyone else may beat the price increases that lower rates may cause.

Here are four things to love about the 2024 housing market:

• Rates have fallen from their October highs, with more improvement expected.

• Buyers have more choices.

• Affordability has improved.

• Values are still climbing.

Overall, if you’d like to make a move, this is a great time to get ahead of the busy spring market. Almost half of all financed homes in the United States are worth double their loan amount. Also, according to Attom Data Solutions’ Q4 2023 report, 46 percent of U.S. homeowners are in an equity-rich position due to home-price growth.

Does your home have equity? Depending on your home value and your current mortgage balance, you may have a significant amount of home equity.

If you are not a homeowner, homeownership is always a good investment. Home prices are expected to continue to rise due to supply and demand.

If you are a homeowner, let’s talk about whether a cash-out refinance is right for you. How do you access your home equity? You can sell your home or refinance your mortgage.

There are programs available that can work in the framework of today’s market and prepare you for the future, whether you want to prepare early or jump in right away.

Bear in mind that by refinancing your existing loan, your total finance charges may be higher over the life of the loan. Always consult with a tax advisor regarding the tax implications of your mortgage.

Orchids:

EXPERT TIPS ON POTTING, WATERING AND BLOOMING SUCCESS

Widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful plants, orchids are prized for their delicate and unusual blooms. Whether they are displayed individually or in groupings, these gorgeous flowers brighten our homes, offices and studios. They often are used in arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres to make occasions like weddings and school dances even more special. During the summer, they can be placed outside under cover of shade and thrive in the Mississippi humidity.

ORCHID BASICS

Tropical plants, orchids grow wild in many parts of the world and are coveted for their exotic appearance. The theory that they are hard to grow in our area is incorrect. In fact, a thriving Gulf Coast Orchid Society conducts monthly meetings and holds an annual show in Gauthier.

HOW TO GROW THEM

Growing orchids can be a rewarding experience. Here are some general tips to get you started:

1. Choose the right type of orchid: Some orchids are easier to grow than others. Cattleya, phalaenopsis and paphiopedilum orchids are among the easiest to grow and are recommended for most beginner gardeners and orchid growers.

2. Pot properly: Orchids need a loose, porous potting mix that allows for good drainage and air circulation. Many people use bark chips, sphagnum moss, coconut husks, charcoal, perlite and even Styrofoam pellets as potting mix, often in combination.

3. Provide the right environment: Orchids thrive in bright, indirect light and high humidity. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Keep the temperature between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and between 55 and 65 degrees at night.

4. Don’t overwater: Orchids need to be watered once a week; make sure to let the soil dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which can kill the plant.

5. Fertilize: Use a water-soluble fertilizer with high nitrogen once a month during the growing season. Some growers suggest using a well-balanced fertilizer at one-quarter strength at each watering.

6. Prune and repot: Cut back the stem after the flowers fade, and repot every two to three years.

Orchids are exotic plants that create beautiful blooms. The phalaenopsis orchid, also known as the moth orchid, is the most popular variety, but there are many different species. With the right care, most orchids bloom at least once per year.

Every orchid species has slightly different needs, but the variables are all the same: light, temperature, water, potting material and humidity. By adjusting the environment to accommodate your species of orchid and providing a few seasonal triggers, you can get your plants to bloom and thrive.

Booked the trip of a lifetime?

YOU NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE

You just scheduled the trip of a lifetime. It’s your chance to see marvelous sights and enjoy life and the beauty of the world. What could possibly go wrong?

Unfortunately, many things can go amiss when it comes to travel, such as flight delays, severe weather, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, medical emergencies, trip cancellations or interruptions, lost or stolen belongings, lost or delayed baggage, emergency evacuation, legal issues and lost passports. Having travel insurance will give you peace of mind knowing that you are financially protected and have a safety net in case of unforeseen circumstances.

WHAT TYPES OF TRAVEL COVERAGE ARE THERE?

Depending on your trip, you may need adventure sports coverage, pet coverage, rental car coverage, coverage for expensive personal items or coverage to cancel for any reason. Trip interruption coverage would reimburse the cost of your trip due to unforeseen sickness or injury. Trip-saver coverage can provide

funds for additional costs associated or unexpected delays and assist with ticket change fees, transportation, meals and hotel costs. Trip cancellation can reimburse your trip cost due to weather issues. There are also options for quarantine issues due to medical exposures. Check around because your insurance agent and travel agents have options for you to consider.

WHAT DOES TRAVEL INSURANCE COST?

Several factors determine the premium for travel insurance, including your age, the duration of your trip, where you are going, the trip cost and whether you have pre-existing medical conditions. If you purchase the coverage within a few days of booking your trip, several other benefits are included for no additional cost.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I FILE A CLAIM?

Should an unexpected event occur during your trip that is covered by your travel insurance policy, you would file a claim with the insurance provider by

submitting documentation and evidence of the event or expenses incurred, and the claims consultant will evaluate your claim based on the policy terms and conditions. If your claim is approved, the insurance provider will reimburse you for the covered expenses, up to the policy limits.

Be sure to carefully read and understand the terms and conditions of your policy to understand the claim process and know what is covered and whether there are any exclusions or limitations. Keep all relevant documents, receipts and contact information for the insurance provider while traveling. Enjoy your trip!

Navigating the caregiving communication dance

Communication often becomes what I describe as a beautiful, awkward dance in which we try to find the right steps to complement the moves of our partner. I find that sometimes my clearly spoken words are not enough in my caregiving journey with my parents, so as a result, I must shift to other methods.

COMMUNICATING WITH CARE RECIPIENTS

For instance, I have asked Ms. Ruby (aka momma) to lift her leg to put her foot in her pajama bottoms or her briefs. While she clearly heard me and could repeat my request, she still did not often comply.

I surmised that her condition (vascular dementia due to a stroke) caused the message to get stuck in transit. Therefore, I began communicating differently. When I gently tapped her ankle, she immediately responded by lifting her foot and placing it in the pant leg. This method has worked well and consistently for this situation, but not as well for other things.

One day recently, momma seemed to have gotten stuck in position as she dangled an empty shake bottle over the little trash can near her feet. I tapped the top of her hand, but she did not release the bottle. I tapped again with a little more force, but still no movement. Then, I tapped the empty bottle and tugged on it a bit to encourage her to release her grip. Her instincts kicked in and caused her to grip the bottle more firmly.

We win some and lose some.

My communication with daddy requires a different approach, although he also lives with dementia. He has more memory deficits than momma, and his cognitive impairment prevents him from remembering whether he’s had his beloved coffee or not. However, it does not cause him to forget who we are.

If I am rushing or super focused on something that I need to do, my behavior becomes one that may be described as impersonal. I’ve learned that when I’m like that and barking orders to daddy to rush things along, he does not respond well if at all. He often becomes obstinate and mouthy. I’ve learned to check my attitude at the door because daddy is so attuned to my mood, demeanor and facial expressions. For those reasons, I have mastered becoming charmingly assertive with him while also exhibiting a bit of patience. He feeds off

that and usually responds positively and cooperatively. Additionally, explanations and supporting evidence is helpful in getting him to cooperate fully.

Encouraging care recipients to communicate their feelings and desires is essential in the caregiving journey. Gathering their input helps to preserve their dignity and worth

COMMUNICATING WITH THE CARE TEAM

Sometimes the other caregivers and I pass each other coming in and going out of my parents’ home, or as we are navigating from room to room, and still forget to communicate pertinent information with each other — like the AC guy or physical therapist is coming, or we are out of laundry detergent. We find it very important to slow down enough to communicate with everyone who assists with my parents’ care.

My husband and I have made a habit of debriefing daily about our visits. We also use group texts to update everyone on medication and behavior changes. The group texts let the sender share a message one time instead of multiple times and provide an archive of shared messages that can be referred to on demand.

COMMUNICATING WITH MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS

Effective communication includes caregivers and care recipients sharing changes, medication reactions and new behaviors with medical professionals. Because I often have forgotten to share pertinent information during a doctor’s appointment, I started jotting things down in the notes app on my phone to reduce the chances of forgetting. Being diligent in sharing this information allows the physicians to make more informed decisions about medication changes and suggestions to give patients and their caregivers. This detailed sharing has helped my parents’ doctors reduce medications, change dosage and give new diagnoses that may not have occurred otherwise.

Unfortunately, not all medical professionals understand dementia. During our visits with new providers, I almost always must inform them of my parents’ dementia diagnosis and encourage them

to adjust their communication with us. I am always very uncomfortable doing that because it feels disrespectful to talk about my parents while they sit listening to us. I also often pause to allow them to answer questions from the doctor or nurse to keep them engaged in their healthcare. To help reduce the awkwardness of verbalizing the dementia diagnoses, I have created cards that I can hand to medical staff and show them on my phone.

COMMUNICATING WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

My parents rarely call family and friends and do not visit as they once did. They do, however, sometimes ask about loved ones that they haven’t seen in a while, and our family and friends always ask about them. Because of that, we try to make sure we keep their cell phones charged and placed where someone will answer them and return calls when they feel up to talking (which is not that often). We also make it a habit to update my brother (who lives in Texas) after doctor visits when there are changes in medications and/or diagnoses.

Effective communication can help improve care, enable better decisions from caregivers and physicians and prevent patients from succumbing to loneliness. Although we often share “I love yous” with each other, my parents enjoy the physical affection of our interactions. When he receives a kiss, daddy usually says, “Thanks! I needed that.” There are times when I need hugs and kisses even more than they do.

Don’t underestimate the verbal and nonverbal communication in caregiving. It can make all the difference.

Looking at private schools? CONSIDER THESE FACTORS

Mississippi’s Gulf Coast is fortunate to offer several private and independent schools to families with young students. Private schools are generally understood to be for-profit organizations established and controlled by one or more persons. Independent schools most often signify a not-for-profit organization that is accountable to a board of trustees, which operates at arm’s length from the administration. Both offer education via paid tuition as opposed to public schools, which are supported by tax dollars.

Choosing to send a child to a private or independent school that is the right fit for a family’s specific needs can be daunting and multi-faceted exercise. Here are some factors to consider:

GRADES SERVED

Families with multiple children will want to look for schools that offer services for toddlers through sixth grade. In the simplest of rationales, that choice helps with logistics — having only one school to drop off and pick children up at each day. More importantly, it enables a family to become an integral member of the school community, built upon a years-long foundation of relationships.

Most importantly, students who attend the same school for their entire academic career, from 18 months of age through sixth-grade graduation, reap the benefits of a learning environment consistent in core values and curriculum integration.

Ascertaining the specifics of a private or independent school’s learning environment is essential to making the right choice. Prospective families should

tour the school’s campus to ascertain how children are encouraged to learn. Is the atmosphere one of positivity and caring? Is it fun and joyful?

TUITION AND FEES

When evaluating private or independent schools, a family should determine what tuition and fees cover: specialized classes such as music and art, plus extracurricular activities such as band and intramural sports? Technology tools such as tablets or laptops?

TESTING AND STUDENTTEACHER RATIO

What is the school’s student-teacher ratio? How much standardized testing is done every year? Does the school offer after care and enrichment programs?

SCHOOL CULTURE

What are the school’s traditions? Are there annual activities that the students look forward to? Are field trips a part

of the school’s annual calendar? What new activities have been implemented in the recent past? Does the school provide any additional services for students who need additional support in reading and speech skills? How is discipline handled, and how does the school communicate with its parents?

Tuition-based schools have a responsibility to provide an educational experience that sets them apart from public schools. To accomplish that, they offer a faculty that is committed to the school’s unique culture and who relish their freedom to teach students who are eager to learn and to grow.

GOING TO COLLEGE?

Follow these steps for a smooth transition

The end of high school comes faster than most of us are ready for it, followed by the daunting question, “What next?” For most students, the answer is college — but planning for that transition must begin long before graduation.

This process can feel overwhelming for students and their families, but by being proactive and taking the right steps, much of the stress can be avoided. Let’s cover some fundamentals to help you navigate this important milestone:

1. DON’T DELAY

Planning for a successful college career should start early in high school, ideally during freshman or sophomore year. Get your school’s guidance counselor involved from the beginning, and start researching schools that align with the student’s future goals. Weigh factors like size, location, academic programs and campus culture.

2. CONSIDER COST

The average college tuition and fees at four-year schools in 2021-2022 was $19,806 — which balloons to $36,436 when ancillary expenses like books and room and board are added — so make sure to discuss the financial aspect of college, and how it will be paid for, early and often as a family. Students needing financial aid should explore scholarships, grants and student loans offered at their desired schools.

3. EXPLORE INTERESTS AND SKILLS

What does the student like to do, and what is he or she good at? These talents and interests are a great place to start when it comes to picking a major, as well as choosing a school that aligns with the student’s passions and aspirations.

4. KEEP YOUR GRADES UP

Academic performance figures heavily into the admissions process. For instance, students who have their hopes set on attending a competitive four-year school should strive for a GPA of around 3.8 or higher. Selective schools also want students who challenge themselves, so don’t slouch when it comes to course load and difficulty.

5. BUILD A WELL-ROUNDED TRANSCRIPT

Grades matter greatly when applying to colleges, but so do extracurricular activities like clubs, sports, and volunteer work. Showing a diversity of accomplishments and involvement can help an applicant stand out. Students also should familiarize themselves with the admissions requirements of the schools they are interested

in and provide any additional materials requested. For letters of recommendation, give teachers or mentors plenty of time, along with ample details and information, to help them make a strong pitch on the student’s behalf.

6. PREPARE FOR STANDARDIZED TESTS

More schools have adopted test-optional or test-blind admissions policies, according to U.S. News & World Report, but by and large, top schools still require ACT and SAT scores. Start preparing for standardized tests well in advance. Take advantage of practice tests, and if necessary, look into prep courses or tutoring.

7. STAY ORGANIZED

A lot of last-minute stress can be avoided by keeping on top of deadlines, dates, requirements, etc. Make a timeline for completing applications, standardized tests and financial-aid forms, etc. Create physical and/or digital folders and spreadsheets for each school to keep all relevant brochures, forms and other documents together. Bookmark important websites for easy access later, and track any changes to admissions policies, requirements or deadlines at the student’s preferred school(s).

8. BE POSITIVE AND FLEXIBLE

We get it; college planning can be tough, but try to stay optimistic and open minded. Be willing to explore different options and go in unexpected directions, as this process can be unpredictable. And above all, enjoy the journey.

The Freshman Perspective

Perhaps you are deliberating on what school to attend, what major to choose, or just trying to enjoy your high school experience. Or perhaps you are an anxious mom, hoping your child will find friends, be successful in sorority/fraternity recruitment or find his or her place in college.

These transitions are tough, to say the least, but it is incredibly important to zoom out a little and look at the bigger picture. Students, your mental, physical and spiritual health should be at the forefront; you cannot pour from an empty cup. Setting time out of your busy schedule to go to the gym or relax a little will calm your mind to do amazing things. And, the best part is, you can do these activities with friends.

As a new college student, don’t be afraid to reach out to the person you sit next to in class, your sorority or fraternity brothers and sisters or the people you pass in your dorm hallways. College is four years long, and these could be the friends that you will have for a lifetime.

My biggest piece of advice is simple: Be kind. If you see something that needs to be changed, do it. Be the bigger person in situations of conflict. Gossip and rumors cut deeper than a lot of people realize. You can be a source of light to those around you; you really have no idea what is going on in other people’s lives.

To parents, siblings and others who are hoping your sweet freshman finds peace and success within their college decisions: Take a deep breath. Your example, whether through family ties or friendship, will be a reminder and guide to the one you love. If you showed kindness, compassion and support, chances are he or she will do the same.

There is beauty in the unknown that is college. This is four years of intellectual growth and social development unlike any other time in life. It is beautiful, and if you approach it with a mindset of kindness and a desire to grow, you cannot fail.

COLLEGE ADVICE FOR EVERY STAGE

ADVISORS

Your career advisors are helpful. Take advantage of these resources, and start talking to them as soon as you determine your career path. Having said that, make sure to do your own research and verify the information you receive. My biggest regret is not fact-checking my schedule advisors before it was almost too late.

You may be tempted, or even urged, to wait to utilize the advisor resources available to you — believing you have plenty of time. Your time at college will go by quickly, so it’s best to prepare yourself as soon as possible.

FRIENDS

The beauty of attending college as a first-year is that everyone is as desperate for friends as you are. Anywhere you go, opportunities exist to make new connections. Join clubs or organizations, attend dorm activities and befriend your neighbors and roommates. It’s surprisingly easy to find friends, even as an introvert.

However, do not expect your firstyear friend group to necessarily stay the same until graduation. Friendship may be more about the quantity than the quality at first — but that’s okay! After a while, you’ll establish a network of more meaningful connections.

The Senior Perspective

Navigating your college experience can be stressful when you don’t know what to expect. As a newly independent adult, you’ll want to hear about the hardships and the harsh realities of being a college student. Here are a few bits of advice about advisor dynamics, navigating friendships, finding balance and embracing the inevitable mistakes:

BALANCE

It’s easy to get caught in the excitement of freedom and independence. Putting yourself out there and enjoying your time is necessary and encouraged, but make sure it doesn’t affect your academics.

That doesn’t mean you should hide out in the library seven days a week. You’re young, and this is the perfect time to make memories and experience new things. I found making a timetable or scheduling my homework sessions made it easier to balance my academics and social life.

Let’s get something out of the way: You will make mistakes. You’re only human. Some errors will be minor, others lifechanging. Either way, show yourself some compassion. Know these missteps do not define your worth or potential. It took me a while to realize not every mistake I made was the end of the world. Take responsibility, learn from your failures, and then move on.

Skylar Mavar is a graduating senior at Texas Christian University. She can be reached at smmavar@yahoo.com.

CONSIDERING GOING BACK TO SCHOOL?

Here’s a solution for every excuse

Forget everything you think you know about the “normal” college student or experience.

Rather than coming to campus straight from high school, today’s undergraduate or graduate student often is pursuing a degree later in life. Where men once dominated the higher-education landscape, women are now outpacing them. Where in-person learning was once the norm, an increasing number of students are completing their degrees online — especially since the pandemic.

So, if you are considering starting or returning to school, what does that mean for you? In short, more options and opportunities than ever before. Here are some of the reasons you may have used to rule out pursuing higher education — and why you should reconsider.

‘I’M TOO OLD,’ OR, ‘I’M NOT THE TYPICAL STUDENT’

When you picture a college student, you probably imagine a fresh-faced recent high school grad but growing number of college students don’t fit that mold. In fact, recent data from the Lumina Foundation show that 37 percent of college students are 25 and older. The same study found that about 58 percent of these “adult learners” or nontraditional students are working while attending college, and more than one-quarter are

And where men were once the majority on campuses, women have taken the

lead; in fall 2021, female students constituted 58 percent of total undergraduate enrollment, according to the Wall Street Journal. At Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, roughly 62 percent of students are female.

So, if you don’t fit the criteria of the “typical” student, you’re in good company.

‘I’M TOO BUSY’

We live in an increasingly chaotic world, and time is at a premium. But if being “busy” is keeping you from reaching your educational goals, it’s worth noting that going back to school on your own terms has never been easier.

“Generally, online degree programs are more accessible due to the flexibility of when the student can do the work,” says Dr. Kristi Motter, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at The University of Southern Mississippi. “Students are not necessarily limited to attending class once per week on a given day at a specific time, and many assignments can be completed on your own schedule and when you have availability. All these factors, along with the immense value in higher education, are great reasons to push toward educational goals!”

At MGCCC, students can take advantage of a hybrid option, which lets them attend a combination of in-person and online classes, as determined by the instructor.

‘IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE’

It’s true — college is costly, and attending a two-year public college costs about 49 percent more than it did 20 years ago. However, there are ways to lower the price tag. MGCCC reports that nearly 61 percent of students are eligible to receive scholarships or other financial aid to help defray college costs. And this is hardly unique; according to the National Center for Education Statistics, over 85 percent of students receive some form of financial aid. From employer tuition assistance to prior learning assessments, which award credit for knowledge gained outside the classroom, where there is a will, there’s a way.

In today’s workforce, advanced degrees and credentials are becoming increasingly necessary to stay competitive. Higher education can lead to a higher income, better employment opportunities and a higher overall quality of life. If you’re contemplating a return to school, there’s never been a better time.

According to the Lumina Foundation, 37 percent of college students are 25 and older; 58 percent are working while attending college.

simple steps 5 kidney health to improve

According to the CDC, more than one in seven U.S. adults, or 37 million people, are estimated to have chronic kidney disease. March is National Kidney Month, a time to raise awareness and learn more about these vital organs and how to keep them healthy.

FROM MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering blood and removing waste products from the body. Located on both sides of the spine, the kidneys are responsible for regulating the body’s fluid balance, electrolyte levels and blood pressure.

Kidneys also play a crucial role in the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. They also help activate vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones and healthy immune function. According to the National Kidney Foundation, kidneys convert vitamin D from supplements or the sun into the active form of vitamin D that the body needs. With chronic kidney disease, low vitamin D levels can be found, sometimes even severely low levels. This may occur because injured kidneys are less able to convert vitamin D into its active form.

To keep your kidneys functioning at their best, follow these tips:

1. STAY HYDRATED

Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining proper kidney function. Aim for at least eight to 10 glasses of water a day, and more if you are physically active or live in a hot climate.

2. EAT A HEALTHY DIET

Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats can help support kidney health. Avoid excessive salt, sugar and processed foods,

which can put stress on the kidneys.

3. EXERCISE REGULARLY

Regular exercise can help lower blood pressure and improve overall kidney function. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking or cycling, most days of the week.

4. MANAGE UNDERLYING HEALTH CONDITIONS

Chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can damage the kidneys over time. If you have these conditions, work with your healthcare provider to manage them effectively and prevent complications.

5. AVOID SMOKING AND EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of kidney disease and other health problems. If you smoke or drink, take steps to quit or reduce your intake.

By making some lifestyle adjustments, you can help support your kidneys and reduce your risk of kidney disease. If you think you may be struggling with kidney issues, contact your primary care provider.

Not all

protein powders are created equal

When you hear the word protein, you probably think about eggs, steak, chicken and fish. With the new year bringing new health and fitness resolutions, many people are adding protein powder to their daily regimen. But with so many choices, how do you know which one to choose? Let’s discuss what you should be looking for on the nutrition facts label to help those muscles grow.

PROTEIN BASICS

Protein is comprised of amino acids that are bound together to make up a larger structure, and they serve very important functions in the body. The word protein comes from the Greek word proteus, meaning first. Protein is essential to maintain life, as it is involved in all the body’s cellular processes.

Here are some facts:

• There are 20 different amino acids.

• Of those, there are nine amino acids that our bodies cannot make on their own, and these are known as “essential” amino acids, or EAAs. These are: valine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, threonine, histidine and lysine. We must get these from food or supplements.

• The rest are considered “non-essential” because our bodies can make them.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENTS IN MY PROTEIN POWDER?

If your goal is muscle gain, here is the quick rundown. We want those nine essential amino acids listed above.

However, protein content in the powder is measured by the amount of nitrogen present, and it is shown in grams of protein on the label. Some companies use less important “filler” amino acids like glycine, arginine, taurine and citrulline, just to name a few, which may boost the protein content of the powder (due to the nitrogen content of them) but do not promote muscle growth. Remember, we can make these on our own. This is known as “amino spiking” and demonstrates why it is so important to understand what is on the label.

Amino spiking allows supplement companies to make a cheaper product and charge you for protein or “nitrogen” content. If you are going to pay for a protein powder, you want the good stuff.

There is a subcategory of amino acids called branch chain amino acids (BCAA), and these are the real MVPs, as they are known to have a special role in boosting muscle growth. They are

called “branched chain” due to the structure of the molecule itself. The three BCAA’s are leucine, isoleucine and valine.

To have the maximum benefit from your protein powder, look for a ratio that looks like this: 2:1:1 (leucine: isoleucine: valine). This will give you a high leucine content, which has been shown to be the main driver of muscle growth.

WHAT IF I’M AN ATHLETE?

There is a quality-assurance program called Informed Sport that tests nutritional supplements for banned substances. This is denoted with a checkmark logo with the word “informed.” This means you can be sure that what’s on the label is what’s in the product.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I LOOK FOR?

Other things to consider on the nutrition-facts label would be total calories, carbohydrates and added sugar and fat content. Other minerals, such as potassium, may not be appropriate for those with certain diseases, such as kidney disease. Remember to speak with your doctor or a registered dietitian to determine which supplements and exercise and diet regimens are right for you.

The art of establishing boundaries

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASSERT YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES

Did you know that we can choose how people will treat us? In fact, establishing boundaries is essential to healthy relationships.

Non-negotiables are standards we set in many areas, not just with a partner or spouse. They can apply to what we will not allow another to do to us, what we need from others and how we will treat ourselves. They aren’t about building walls or being unnecessarily difficult, quite the opposite. They allow you to reclaim your power and stand in it with strength.

They usually start off sounding something like, “I don’t do …,” or, “I do not allow someone to ….”

SETTING YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES

First, determine where you need boundaries. For many, it’s in intimate relationships with a partner or children. You may ask yourself:

• How do I want to be treated?

• What am I willing to accept in my relationships?

• What am I not willing to accept under any circumstances?

• What is something I must have in a relationship?

• How do I want to feel in a relationship?

Ask yourself, “How do people treat me in ways I do not like, and who is doing this?” When someone does something that doesn’t feel good emotionally, mentally or physically, take note. These belong on your list.

Some responses or affirmations may include:

• “I don’t allow anyone to yell at me.”

• “I don't allow anyone to degrade me.”

• “I don't allow anyone to minimize my needs.”

• “I don’t allow anyone to verbally or physically assault me.”

Once you have set your bare minimums, then ask yourself: How do I want to feel in my relationships?

Consider some of these…

• I want to feel valued.

• I want to feel heard.

• I want to feel noticed.

• I want to feel safe.

• I want to feel understood.

If you aren't used to asking for what you need, then all this may be challenging — but don’t give up. It may take some time to allow yourself the freedom to form your non-negotiables. Be patient with yourself. The more you define them, in writing, the more you will feel and be empowered. Writing down what you desire is a powerful tool in putting anything into motion.

Remember, non-negotiables are not about being difficult or building walls, but rather about creating boundaries to preserve your integrity and to support you in living your healthiest, happiest life. Don’t you deserve that?

Stepping out of sudden heel pain

CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS FOR LASTING RELIEF

Heel pain can strike unexpectedly, turning a simple walk into an uncomfortable challenge. If you've recently experienced a jolt of pain in your heel, you're not alone. This common issue affects more than 2 million Americans every year, but understanding its potential causes and treatment options can lead you back to comfort.

WHAT TYPICALLY CAUSES HEEL PAIN?

Heel pain can be caused by a variety of different conditions, but most heel pain comes down to overuse — simply being on your feet for too long. Your heel also may become swollen or painful for any of the following reasons:

• Shoes with poor support

• Running on hard surfaces

• Running too often

• Tightness in your calf muscles

• Landing hard on your heel while walking or running

WHICH CONDITIONS CAUSE HEEL PAIN?

• Achilles tendinitis: This condition is caused by overuse of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects your calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone.

• Heel bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac at the back of the heel, can cause pain and swelling.

• Plantar fasciitis: This is the most common cause of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, the ligament connecting your heel to the front of your foot, becomes strained. This can lead to pain and stiffness in the heel area.

• Heel spurs: These are abnormal growths of bone on the bottom of your heel, often developing alongside plantar fasciitis.

• Stress fracture: High-impact activities like running or jumping can sometimes cause a stress fracture in the heel.

WHAT ARE SOME TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR HEEL PAIN?

• Rest and ice: Give your feet a break. Reducing activities that put stress on your heel, combined with applying ice, can reduce inflammation and pain.

• Proper footwear: Wear shoes that provide good arch support and a cushioned sole. Avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces.

• Exercises and stretches: Stretching exercises for the Achilles tendon and plantar fascia can help relieve pain and improve flexibility.

• Over-the-counter pain relief: Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen, can reduce pain and inflammation.

• Orthotic devices: Custom or over-the-counter orthotics can provide extra cushioning and support for your heel.

• Physical therapy: A physical therapist can teach you exercises to strengthen your lower leg muscles, which helps stabilize your walk and lessen the workload on your heel.

Remember, if you're experiencing sudden heel pain, it's important not to ignore it. Your feet are essential to your overall health and wellbeing. Stay in tune with your body, and don't hesitate to seek professional medical advice for persistent pain.

Demystifying hypothyroidism

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS CHRONIC, YET EASILY MANAGED, CONDITION

FROM SINGING RIVER HEALTH SYSTEM

Hypothyroidism is a common, but frequently untreated, thyroid condition. Singing River endocrinologist Dr. Arianna Mohiuddin explains the condition and how it is treated.

WHAT IS HYPOTHYROIDISM?

Hypothyroidism also is referred to as underactive thyroid, and it is a condition where your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate your metabolism, heart rate, body temperature and various other functions.

Think of your body’s metabolism as an engine, and your thyroid as the gas pedal. When you have hypothyroidism, it is like having a gas pedal stuck on low. Your body slows down, and it is struggling to keep pace with its usual rhythm.

Hypothyroidism is incredibly common and affects approximately 5-10 % of the general population.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM INCLUDE:

• Fatigue and sluggishness: The most common symptom is fatigue — feeling perpetually tired, drained and lacking in energy.

• Unexplained weight gain of approximately five to 10 pounds: Even with diet and exercise, your body is just not burning calories efficiently.

• Sensitivity to cold: Your metabolism slows down heat production, and you feel chilly, even in mild temperatures.

• Dry skin and hair: Your skin might feel rough, and your hair might feel thin or become brittle.

• Brain fog and mood changes: Difficulty concentrating, memory problems and even depression can occur with hypothyroidism.

DO MANY PEOPLE HAVE HYPOTHYROIDISM BUT NOT KNOW?

Yes, absolutely. Hypothyroidism is incredibly common. Levothyroxine, which is the treatment for hypothyroidism, is among the most prescribed medications in the world.

HOW DO I FIND OUT IF I HAVE IT?

A thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) test is the best initial test you can get for a hypothyroidism diagnosis. It is very easy to order the test from any primary care provider, physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner, and the results come back pretty quickly.

A “normal” TSH level depends on your specific lab, but a ballpark estimate is 0.45 to 4.5. For people who are

March 2024 70

elderly, the upper limit of normal is slightly higher. The recommendation also changes for pregnant patients.

HOW IS HYPOTHYROIDISM TREATED?

The mainstay of treatment is levothyroxine. The dose will be adjusted based on a variety of factors, such as the patient’s age, weight and the presence of coronary artery (heart) disease. Dosage regimens also change during pregnancy and with significant weight changes.

Although levothyroxine is generally very well tolerated, some people are allergic to the dye. However, dye-free pills are available. Other symptoms can include nausea and vomiting.

Another potential side effect, especially when you’re first starting, is fatigue and tiredness. Within the first few weeks, some people can experience change in their menstrual periods, diarrhea, insomnia, nervousness and anxiety.

SHOULD PEOPLE WITH HYPOTHYROIDISM ADHERE TO CERTAIN DIETS?

Generally, it should be a healthy diet, and I am a believer in the plant-based diet.

There are people who say to do keto diets, then there are those who say to do low-carb. However, based on the research I have reviewed, and recommendations from the

American Heart Association, a plant-based diet is the way to go, meaning the majority of your diet should come from fruits and vegetables, as well as legumes and whole grains. Studies have shown that plant-based diets can lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular issues.

CAN HYPOTHYROIDISM BE CURED?

It is considered a chronic condition, meaning that it necessitates lifelong treatment.

Some people want to be seen by a specialist, and I think that’s perfectly fine. If the option is available to you, go for it. However, because hypothyroidism is such a common condition, it can be treated very well by a primary care provider.

Working out isn't just about staying fit, but also about relieving stress and feeling great mentally and physically. While there may some stigma about working out while pregnant, there is nothing to worry about if you are doing it safely. Gentle routines like prenatal yoga, Pilates and pelvic floor and abdominal exercises can help improve stamina, flexibility and mood. These activities also can help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts like back pain and swelling. Staying active also improves cardiovascular health, which is important for both the mother and the developing baby. Finally, safe workouts prepare the body for labor, which leads to a smoother delivery.

Stay fit during pregnancy with these safe, effective workouts

Of course, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program, especially during pregnancy. Here are some options to consider during your beautiful prenatal journey.

PREGNANCY PILATES

Has anyone said Pilates isn't ideal for pregnant women? Well, here is the truth: Pilates is great for your body at any stage. However, you must do research to ensure your instructor and routine are a good fit for your pregnancy needs. Having an instructor who is certified in prenatal or postnatal Pilates is very important so he or she can modify your workouts and ensure you and the baby remain safe. It’s a wonderful experience, and I recommend Pilates to all momsto-be.

PRENATAL YOGA

Yoga practice adds many amazing benefits to your life. Beyond the physical aspects of strength, flexibility and balance, yoga provides a sanctuary for mental and emotional wellness. The calming and centering

nature of yoga helps alleviate stress and anxiety, fostering a sense of inner peace.

As women, we are always navigating the demands of daily life. Incorporating yoga into our routine can be a powerful tool for managing stress. Moreover, yoga encourages mindfulness and self-awareness, promoting a positive body image and a deeper connection to ourselves and others.

Just because you are a mama doesn't mean you should quit this mindful exercise. It adds positivity to your journey and relieves many of the physical and mental stresses of pregnancy, not to mention the bond you can create while doing prenatal yoga. When the time comes for labor, yoga will have given you increased strength and stamina, as well as beneficial breathing and relaxation techniques.

DANCE CLASS

For the mamas who can’t stop the beat, group dance classes are a great way to express yourself while having fun and staying fit. Dancing counts as aerobic exercise; from ballroom to Zumba, dance is a great way to keep moving.

Some mothers-to-be might not know this, but dancing helps with balance and coordination. Your cute new bump might have you feeling a bit clumsy, and practicing some coordinating dance steps can help. Plus, dancing can give you big energy. Hormonal changes affect your body by making you feel easily fatigued, lethargic and unmotivated. Ultimately, dancing helps you to sleep better and feel more rested during the day.

PELVIC FLOOR AND ABDOMINAL EXERCISES

Pelvic floor exercises are great for all stages of our lives, including pregnancy. Have you ever laughed and accidentally tinkled? Don’t feel embarrassed; it's common during your babycarrying days. Hormonal changes cause your muscles to soften

and stretch more easily as you get closer to labor. Pelvic floor exercises can help with stress incontinence in the future.

Also, don’t neglect your abdominal workouts. Your core is key; you use these muscles to push the baby out, and they also support your spine. If you hit your abs hard at the gym before pregnancy, you can alleviate pressure on your back and promote proper posture, fending off the lower back pain that's so common during pregnancy. If you are just now strengthening your abdominals, there are safe workouts that will help you feel good in the process.

CLIMBING STAIRS

Climbing stairs is a great, low-impact exercise that works out your leg muscles and improves blood flow. Before you try it, make sure you have the proper footwear.

As a bonus, adding stair-climbing to your regular routine can provide a natural energy boost, making it a convenient and accessible option for pregnant women looking to stay active throughout their motherhood journey.

However you decide to keep in shape during your pregnancy, remember to talk with your healthcare professional before adding new exercises to your routine.

At higher risk for cancer?

GENETIC TESTING CAN TELL YOU

Genetic testing has many clinical uses. With regard to cancer, it looks for certain changes (mutations) in a person’s genes that might increase his or her risk of developing certain cancers. Genetic testing can be offered to individuals with a strong family history or personal history of cancer. If a genetic mutation is found, this can have several implications.

For instance, mutations in the BRCA gene can increase the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. It is recommended that women with known BRCA mutations start breast cancer screenings at a younger age than the general population — late 20s versus age 40. In addition, MRIs are used in addition to mammograms for screening purposes. Further, measures to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, such as medication or surgical intervention, also may be considered.

Another example is Lynch syndrome, which increases the risk of young-onset colon cancer, uterine cancer and several other cancers. Currently, the recommendation for the general population is to start colon cancer screening at age 45, and if the screen is normal to have a colonoscopy every 10 years. With Lynch syndrome however, colon cancer can develop at a young age and grow very quickly; thus for Lynch syndrome patients, the recommendation is to start screening in the 20s and repeat at 12- to 18-month intervals.

Most people (even people with cancer) do not need this type of testing. Only about 5-10 percent of cancers are related to inherited genetics. Genetic testing should be considered for individuals who have had certain cancers or patterns of cancer in their families, such as one or more first- or second-degree relatives with:

• cancer before age 50

• the same type of cancer

• two or more different cancers in an individual

• a rare cancer, such as male breast cancer

• a known familial mutation, such as BRCA 1 or BRCA 2

• a certain race or ethnicity (such as Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry)

• abnormal physical finding, such as many colon polyps, known to be linked to inherited cancer

• certain cancer patterns in the family, such as breast, pancreatic or prostate, might suggest BRCA mutation

If you are concerned about cancer history in your family or your own personal history of cancer, talk to your health provider to determine whether you should be tested.

It’s so hard to tell where the weather is going, let alone how to dress for it. Given this cycle of uncertainty, where we have to be ready for freezing temps, warm sunshine and everything in between, styling your everyday looks can be difficult. The key to staying chic and comfy is layering. Here are my top three quick and easy tips to help you ease into the spring.

1. SWEATER WEATHER

This season, easy, lightweight sweaters and cardigans are a staple. When you find the perfect piece, your options for creating outfits become limitless. For example, pairing an oversized sweater over one of your favorite dresses can be a cool, casual outfit, but you can dress this style up as well. This Urban Renewal remnants bubble drippy sleeve pullover (from $24.99, www.urbanoutfitters.com) is a study in versatility.

And we all know cardigans are a classic. With so many styles, colors and details to choose from, it’s the perfect way to complete a look — especially during the in-between season. Case in point, H&M’s tie-front cardigan (from $17.99, www2.hm.com). While black and white are always safe bets style-wise, don’t hesitate to add some color to brighten up your looks.

2. MATCHY-MATCHY

Everyone should own a matching set. Not only are they practical, but you don’t have to think too hard about what you’re going to wear. This Free People Malibu Solid set (from $98, www.freepeople.com) is slightly oversized and ideal for lounging. When shopping for sets, keep an eye out for ribbed fabric; it’s one of my favorites to wear between weather changes. Find pieces that are lightweight, but easy to layer. The Free People top is longsleeved, so it will keep you cozy in cooler temps and is perfect for spring.

3. GO WITH THE FLOW

No list of essential transitional pieces would be complete without flowy skirts. Whether midi or maxi length, feminine, lightweight pieces like the Reformation Vida skirt (www.thereformation.com , $198) can transform any outfit.

I love to use a free-flowing skirt to amp up the style, pairing it with a tucked-in, off-the-shoulder cardigan or even a button-down with a bodysuit underneath. Layering gives the look polish, while the skirt lends a touch of movement that’s perfect for the season ahead. Speaking of spring, the Miss Selfridge satin jacquard maxi skirt (from $47.99, www.asos.com) puts me in mind of soft breezes and blooming flowers.

her secret Spilling

Blakli Lawrence lives on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with her husband, Landon, her two daughters, Emmy and Loxley, and her son, Britain. She has a master’s degree and is a former teacher who has been self-employed for six years. She works from home with her social media-based business, homeschools her girls and helps with the music at their church. She leads a very busy life and travels often. Here’s her secret to looking great while keeping up with all of life’s demands:

1. HAIR CARE GAME CHANGER

I have a lot of hair, and I use my Lange wand almost every day! The one I use is the Lange Ondule 25 MM 1-inch curling wand. It heats up so fast, and I can curl my whole head of hair in about 10 minutes.

2. THE GOAT HAIRSPRAY

The only hairspray you will ever see me using is Aussie Instant Freeze! I have tried so many others, and my hair is so fine and won’t naturally hold a curl. When I use the Lange wand and follow it with this hairspray, I keep my curls — even in the Gulf Coast humidity.

3. CUTEST HAIR CLIPS

I get most of my hair accessories from Wimberly’s Beauty Bar. I love supporting small businesses, and I adore their tiny

hair clips with pretty details and all the fun headbands.

4.

THE BEST CONCEALER

I hardly wear any makeup, but the Too Faced Born This Way concealer is so great! It bends so well that it looks like you aren’t wearing any makeup. It can conceal dark under-eyes and any redness on your nose. I swipe it one time in a straight line and use a beauty blender for my under-eyes and nose; it’s just so good!

5. MAGIC WAND FOR YOUR FACE

I don’t go a day without my Lumi Spa! I use it every morning and night for fresh, clean and glowing skin! It comes in this rose gold color with a pretty stand that elevates your bathroom counter. I

used to hand wash my face, but since using the Lumi, I’ve had the best skin of my life. It will get rid of your acne and blackheads, too. It’s a must for me.

6. SMELLS LIKE CLASS

I’ve used Acqua di Gioia perfume for years. When my husband and I were dating about 15 years ago, he bought me this perfume for my 18th birthday, and it’s held sentimental value ever since. It’s not too fruity, not too bold — just the right amount of class. I always felt very grown up wearing it, and now, as an actual grown up, I still love it!

microneedling Bring out your inner beauty with

Although microneedling is done using a small device, it can create big transformations. This treatment has been shown to improve complexions, reduce neck wrinkles, reduce the appearance of acne scars and reveal smooth, healthy skin.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

SkinPen, the first FDA- cleared microneedling device, creates thousands of microscopic channels in your skin. While doing this, it activates the body’s natural healing response to remodel the skin and keep its overall structure intact.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

After the skin is gently cleansed, a topical anesthesia may be administered to assure maximum comfort during the treatment. The SkinPen device uses one or more needles to mechanically puncture and injure skin tissue for aesthetic use. This process jumpstarts the production of collagen and elastin and encourages the release of growth factors that recruit and increase reparative cells. The result is a cascade of healing processes that can continue for months after your treatment.

WILL THIS TREATMENT WORK FOR ME?

Microneedling using SkinPen rejuvenates skin from the inside out, and results are natural, safe and effective for all skin tones and types. The procedure jump-starts new collagen without heat or chemicals and is a quick and easy treatment with little to no downtime.

“Collagen and elastin are the essential protein fibers in the skin that give it support and elasticity,” says Dr. Dawn Hansen of Dermatology Specialists of Mississippi & Aqua Medical Spa. “As we age, these fibers break down and can cause wrinkles. Microneedling, also referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a great way to address these signs of aging at the cellular level.”

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

After your treatment, your skin may appear slightly pink to red, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. This is normal and should subside within 24 to 72 hours. Most people see results in as few as three 30-minute sessions. Some people see rejuvenated skin after just one treatment, and results may continue to improve for three to six months following your last treatment.

• 94 percent of patients noticed an improvement in how their neck wrinkles looked at one-month post treatment.

• 90 percent of clinical trial subjects for acne scarring would recommend the procedure to friends and family.

Treatment sessions last approximately 30 minutes. Depending on whether an anesthetic is used, your entire treatment session may last up to one hour — leaving plenty of time to schedule your treatment before work or during your lunch hour. Be sure to confirm with your provider when you schedule to get an accurate estimate, so you know how to plan your visit.

Give your face a healthy glow this spring

As we all know, spring brings an opportunity to shake off the winter haze. With the start of a new season, we have a chance to enter a courageous new era. One positive change you can make is to be more attentive to your largest organ, your skin, The topic of skin has been trending lately, specifically treating and caring for it, as well as options for enhancing it. As always, your skin’s health should be a top priority.

First, let me pose a question. Since the start of the new year, how have you been caring well for your skin? Have you moisturized? Have you remembered to wear your sunscreen? Did you know that it is OK to wear your sunscreen underneath your foundation? It is OK if you answered “no” to any or all these questions. Again, here is your opportunity to change and evolve.

PRIMING AND MOISTURIZING

Daily moisturizing is the simplest task when you opt for water-based choices. Skin cells are constantly renewing, and to continue to glow, we must feed our skin internally and externally. If you are one who wants to enhance your appearance with the latest makeup brands, having healthy skin ensures better results. Primers with hyaluronic acids like E.L.F Power Grip (from $10, www.elfcosmetics.com) aid in leaving the skin moisturized. This budget-friendly product allows foundations to take on a more hydrated appearance, which differs from the matte looks of previous seasons.

SKIN TINTS AND FOUNDATIONS

Skin tints and serum-rich foundations also are trending. Trusted brands like MAC and CoverGirl have options for all budgets. One I recommend is M.A.C Strobe Dewy Skin Tint (from $36, amazon. com)

While the popular preference is shifting from heavier to lighter and matte to moisturized, that doesn’t mean the desire for coverage is going away. However, rather than hiding under layers of makeup, we are correcting our approach to create, lifelong, loving relationships with our beautiful skin.

Giving our skin, the chance to be nourished and be the star of the day should always be our aim. Make this spring your time to glow!

Blooming love:

A FLORAL ODYSSEY THROUGH 2024’S BIGGEST WEDDING TRENDS

As we look ahead to wedding season 2024, the floral forecast reveals an enchanting garden of wedding trends that offer brides a myriad of inspiration. From timeless bouquets to elevated adornments, let’s embark on a journey that promises to infuse romance and elegance into every petal of your celebration.

PETITE BOUQUETS

For a truly dreamy, regal aesthetic, brides and influencers are turning away from larger bouquets and entertaining the prospect of petite bouquets filled with quality, premium florals. While small, these bouquets lend themselves to a classic and elegant look, reminiscent of royal bouquets. Demure as they may be, do not be shocked at their sticker price, as these bouquets take just as much time/labor for designers to create and often are filled with delicate, limited-supply flowers like lily of the valley. If you are startled by the cost of these hard-to-comeby blooms, consider mixing in permanent botanicals with live foliage and florals.

MONOCHROMATIC COLOR SCHEMES

Following the trend of bridesmaids’ dresses, florals in different shades of one color are all the rage. Various shades of cream and white, purples and lavenders, blues, pinks and earth tones are having their day in the sun for 2024. This look lends itself to a cohesive overall theme while still promoting a diverse range of textures, blooms and greenery.

GROUND FLORALS AND AISLE MEADOWS

We love a grand entrance, and what could be more jawdropping than walking down the aisle through a beautiful field of flowers? One of the best parts about investing in ground florals is that your designer can repurpose elements of this overthe-top look as centerpieces, stage florals or sweetheart table florals, or fill in any areas that may need covering. Talk to your planner to see if this option is available, as it is time-sensitive. Ceremony flips can incur an additional cost, but the expense may be worth it to repurpose these arrangements.

WILDFLOWERS

Easily one of the most-requested elements of this year, wildflowers create a natural, organic look and a light and airy feel. “I want it to look like you went and picked flowers from a meadow” is a phrase we hear often. Fortunately for us on the Coast, we have a few local farms with long growing seasons. Your floral designer can procure, condition and design with these very delicate blooms because they can source them nearby, cutting down on shipping costs and damage. Farms like La Terre and Coastal Ridge offer a variety of unique flowers, as well as “you-pick” days that are perfect for DIY brides who want sustainable options.

BOWS, BOWS … AND MORE BOWS

We’ve seen bows trending on dresses for the last couple of years; now we’re seeing them everywhere — and we’re here for it. Bows around bridal bouquets, on garlands, on candlesticks they seem to be appearing all over in every color. They add an element of interest and a nod to femininity and romance, giving a new meaning to “tying the knot.”

May your wedding be adorned with the captivating elegance of 2024’s floral trends, which will have your big day blooming with everlasting charm and romance.

Preservation and perseverance

How Monica Mingo built her business

There are many wellwritten articles covering the technical aspects of building a business, offering step-bystep instructions regarding incorporation, marketing, etc. This isn’t that kind of article. I’m here to share the secrets that keep my business viable in adverse conditions.

1. NEVER GIVE UP.

I believed I’d done all the right things. I hired good people, giving them space to hone their craft and hold themselves accountable. Then the significant economic problems of 2023 arose, and I could do nothing except batten down the hatches and persevere.

Times got tough, and I became more creative on social media. I shared a lot about who I am as a child abuse survivor and someone who suffers from clinical depression. I shared why I work so hard and care so much about my team and my community. I never stopped believing in us, and I never will. I still believe that one day an angel investor will show up and help me to franchise, as I think our business could work near any big city in the country.

2. VALUE YOUR TEAM.

I am not a micro-manager. Fortunately, with my current team, I don’t have to be. I value my employees and know they understand what needs to be done. I respect them and their pace, as I know we all want our business to succeed.

3. RECOGNIZE WHEN AND IN WHAT DIRECTION TO PIVOT.

As the economy did its thing, I focused on the services we offered that never slowed down, such as furniture repair, restoration, reupholstery and refinishing. Breathing new life into cherished heirlooms and preserving the essence of craftsmanship is an area where we shine.

"As the economy did its thing, I focused on the services we offered that never slowed down, such as furniture repair, restoration, reupholstery and refinishing."
March 2024 90 success

4. APPRECIATE YOUR PATRONS.

We have amazing clients. I get texts and calls daily from people who know we can work magic with their worn-out furniture pieces. Our clients watch our Facebook page regularly and know all the things we do in our community. They are ambassadors of our cute little store, as well as influencers. They tell everybody about us, and one client turned friend went above and beyond in a way I still can’t believe.

Even in difficult times, we continued to work with our patrons and make it possible for them to pay for their pieces over time or put items on layaway. Conditions were not just hard for small businesses; they were hard for our clients, too, and they have appreciated our understanding.

5. REALIZE THE VALUE OF LOSS

I had a few losses last year that hurt me emotionally, which will probably always hurt. However, loss makes you lighter on your feet and improves your critical thinking.

My husband says I am not the best businessperson because I tend to value people over money. Last year taught me that I need to get back to doing the things I love, particularly hunting for fabulous mid-century modern furniture and décor. When I am genuinely excited about something, my team is, too, and that is important.

As the business flourishes, expansion will become a natural progression. We plan to venture into offering workshops and seminars, sharing our expertise with enthusiasts eager to learn the art of restoration. The continued success of my furniture repair and restoration business is not solely measured by financial gains, but by the impact made on individuals and communities. Each restored piece carries a story, a legacy preserved for generations to come, and is a testament to the enduring power of craftsmanship and the art of breathing new life into the past.

LET’S NOT BE AFRAID TO TALK ABOUT MONEY

As we enter spring, let’s refresh our perspective about having financial conversations. Our relationship with money often is shaped by personal experience and beliefs that were ingrained in us from a young age. Many of us were taught that money is a private matter that should not be discussed openly. Some may even consider it disrespectful to ask about someone’s financial situation.

We need to question whether this approach is beneficial. For many, it only has created discomfort and hindered our ability to have meaningful conversations about money. It’s time to break free from this fear and empower ourselves to talk openly about our finances.

There’s one thing successful women have in common when it comes to money: We want to make the most of it. This brings us to the first tip on overcoming the fear of financial conversations.

RECONNECT WITH YOUR TRUE SELF

Remember, your worth is not defined by your financial status. It’s easy to let money dictate who we are, but we must not lose sight of our true selves. Take the time to rediscover the positive qualities that make you unique and valuable. Set healthy boundaries so that external factors, like money, do not define your worth in this world. When you have a solid understanding of who you are and what you stand for, money becomes important, but it no longer dominates your identity.

LEARN FROM CONVERSATIONS

Let’s be honest — how many times have you heard something about money that sparked your interest? Each of these instances has the potential to lead to a conversation that could benefit you financially. Take note of these experiences and recognize that fear was not present in those moments. The barrier that inhibits you from discussing personal finances can be overcome by shifting your mindset and drawing on positive financial experiences. Embrace the idea of having healthy financial conversations and learning from others. By adopting this new mindset, you will normalize these discussions and open yourself up to financial growth.

By empowering ourselves to talk openly about money, we can escape the stigma and discomfort that surrounds this sensitive subject. Remember, your worth is not determined by your bank balance, and every conversation about money has the potential to bring you closer to financial success. It’s time to embrace the power of discussing money and reap the rewards that come with it.

FOSTERING HOPE EVENT PUTS FOCUS ON CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

As part of a public, private and faith-based partnership, Communities of Hope recently hosted Fostering Hope, a foster-care-awareness and call-to-action event at First Baptist Church, Gulfport, Communities of Hope is an initiative created by agencies, groups and individuals within Mississippi’s communities working together to embrace and support children and families involved in foster care.

“With over 3,800 children in foster care, it takes all of us to ensure that families have what they need to be successful,” says MDCPS Commissioner Andrea Sanders. “It is critical for the agency to work with all resources that serve children across the state, including private foster care agencies, advocates and volunteers, local organizations and faithbased groups that wrap around families. We need your help more than ever and are committed to revitalizing how we serve and engage the community.”

Representatives from numerous public and private organizations were on hand to share opportunities to get involved, from adoption and fostering to volunteering time and donating items. EMBRACE CHANGE FOR FINANCIAL WELLNESS

A money guide for every life stage

What is your standard response to change? Do you resist or embrace life’s transitions? Do you view change as positive, negative or simply inevitable?

I suggest that change is an essential part of life. Without change, people and things become stagnant, not growing and lacking vitality. This doesn’t sound like a place I would like to find myself.

The advent of a new year is a great time to review your past, present and future financial situation. It’s a time to consider upcoming life changes, such as graduating from high school or college, switching jobs, getting married or divorced, having children, losing a significant other or even retirement.

That said, here is some advice for those in various stages of life.

LEARNING THE BASICS

For young people, now is the right time to teach basic money concepts, such as the cost of money. To earn money, we must exchange a portion of our lives and our time. Encourage them to consider how many hours it took them to earn the money they want to spend. Is what they want to buy worth that many hours of their time?

Another great teaching point is the benefit of saving — putting money aside for unexpected expenses and their future. An antidote for the problem of greed so often displayed in our society is teaching the young people around us about the joy of giving and using our lives, our generosity, as an example.

THE BENEFITS OF BUDGETING

As we become adults, we often experience some hard life lessons when we allow our money to manage us instead of us managing it. If you haven’t already learned to budget, there is no better time to begin than now. Budgeting helps you know how much money you earn, as well as how you are spending it and how your money, or lack thereof, may be controlling you.

Budgeting does not have to be a rigid, dictatorial, process. Budgeting done properly is a tool to assist you in making

better financial decisions today upon which to build a solid foundation for tomorrow.

PLANNING FOR COLLEGE

While experiencing the joy and stress of our childbearing and childrearing years, we often allow ourselves to become so consumed by the day to day that we fail to plan for our financial future. One thing I often hear parents stress over is setting aside money for college. My first questions always bring the focus back to the parents’ financial health. Can they pay their bills on time? Do they have a budget? How much, and what kind of debt do they have? Do they have an emergency fund? Do they have a retirement account set up that they are actively funding? Do they have sufficient life insurance coverage to replace their income should they die unexpectedly?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, my recommendation is to address each of these issues before attempting to put aside money for your child’s college.

READYING FOR RETIREMENT

Finally, let’s talk about the transition from working to retirement. Statistics

percent admit they’re not on track to retire comfortably.

At ages 55 to 59, the median household had only $24,500 in retirement accounts. One popular rule of thumb states that you should have enough money set aside that you can withdraw 4 percent per year to cover your living expenses. What would your retirement look like if you had to live on 4 percent of your total retirement savings? Would you be in good or dire financial condition?

Based on your current retirement planning, or lack thereof, how easy would it be for you to find yourself among the older adults who are forced out of their job, with little or no retirement savings, still in debt and using Social Security as your primary source of income? If this scenario describes you, now is the time to make changes so your future self will have a better retirement. You will be glad you did.

Bleu cheese mug toppers

Ingredients:

• 2 boxes Jiffy cornbread mix

2 eggs

• 2/3 cup milk

4 ounces bleu cheese

• ½ stick butter

Directions:

1. Mix jiffy cornbread according to the box’s directions. Let sit for 15 minutes after combining well.

2. Fold four ounces of bleu cheese into your cornbread mixture.

3. On a flat griddle, melt half of a stick of butter.

4. Drop cornbread mixture onto griddle and gently press it out a little to help it form pancakes.

5. When the edges of your cornbread start to look dry, flip them and cook on the other side. It normally takes approximately three minutes on each side to fully cook, but poke a little hole in the middle before removing from heat to ensure they’re done.

Warm up with savory soups and chilis

This time of year can be hit or miss weatherwise, and when temperatures drop, there’s nothing better than an easy soup or chili to help keep my family and me warm. These cozy recipes can be made on the stovetop in a hurry, or you can fix it and forget it in the crockpot. No matter how you make them and get them on the table, they’re sure to be a hit.

BUFFALO CHICKEN CHILI WITH BLEU CHEESE MUG TOPPERS

Buffalo chicken chili

Ingredients:

2 pounds ground chicken

• 2 carrots

3 stalks celery

• 1 yellow onion Minced garlic (as much or little as you like)

1 cup beer

• 1 cup chicken broth

½ to 1 cup hot wing buffalo sauce

1 29-ounce can tomato sauce

1 15-ounce can petite diced tomatoes

1 teaspoon garlic powder

• 1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon chili powder

• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon ground coriander

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Finely dice carrots, onions and celery.

2. In a soup pot, add in your ground chicken and diced vegetables. Chop up chicken and cook the mixture until the vegetables start to get soft and the chicken is no

longer pink.

3. Add minced garlic and cook about three minutes more.

4. Add beer and cook until alcohol is cooked off, about four minutes. If you don’t like beer, you can substitute for more chicken broth.

5. Add in chicken broth, tomato sauce and petite diced tomatoes and combine well.

6. Add hot wing buffalo sauce. This measurement is going to depend on how spicy you want it. I add a cup.

7. Add in garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, ground coriander, salt and pepper. Combine well, taste and add more seasoning if needed.

8. Bring to a low simmer for 45 minutes to an hour uncovered.

9. Serve with bleu cheese mug toppers, cornbread and crumbled bleu cheese on top if desired.

For crockpots: cook ground chicken and vegetables on stove before adding to crockpot with all listed ingredients and seasonings. Cook on high for three hours or on low for five.

CHEESEBURGER SOUP

Ingredients:

• 2 pounds ground beef

1 yellow onion

• 2 carrots

2 stalks celery

• 2 pounds yellow or russet potatoes

24 ounces bacon

• Minced garlic — as much or as little as you like

4 cups chicken broth

• 2 cups heavy whipping cream

2 cups shredded mild cheddar

• 1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

• 2 teaspoons Tony Chachere’s 1 teaspoon dried basil

• Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Finely dice your carrot, celery and onion.

2. Shred cheddar cheese, or you can use pre-shredded cheese; either one will work.

3. Dice potatoes into bite-sized pieces. I leave the skin on, but you can peel them if you’d like.

4. Cut bacon into bite-sized pieces and cook until crispy in the pot where you will make your soup. The bacon is to top the soup, so microwave bacon also works if you don’t feel like cooking it.

5. When bacon is done cooking, remove from pot and set it to the side. Leave grease in the pot.

6. Add in your ground beef and chopped vegetables. Cook until the vegetables are soft and the ground beef is no longer pink. Drain grease and return mixture to pot.

7. Add in minced garlic and cook with meat mixture for three minutes.

8. Add in chicken broth, heavy whipping cream, potatoes and cheddar cheese. Bring to a low simmer and stir until cheese melts.

9. Add in onion powder, garlic powder, Tony’s, dried basil, salt and pepper. Adjust seasonings to your liking.

10. Simmer on low for 30 minutes uncovered or until your potatoes are fork tender. Stir often so your bottom doesn’t scorch.

11. It is important not to let this mixture rapidly boil, as it can cause it to separate.

12. Top with crispy bacon, shredded cheddar cheese and chopped green onions.

* For crockpots: Cook meat and vegetables on the stove before adding to crockpot with all listed ingredients and seasonings. Cook on high for four hours or low for six.

CORN AND CRAB BISQUE

Ingredients:

• 16 ounces lump blue crab meat

1 stick salted butter

• 1 yellow onion

2 heaping tablespoons flour

• 2 cups chicken broth

4 cups heavy whipping cream

• 1 15-ounce-can fire-roasted corn

1 cup frozen corn

• Minced garlic — as much or as little as you like

1 teaspoon onion powder

• 1 teaspoon garlic powder

• 1 teaspoon Tony Chachere’s

• Salt to taste

Directions:

1. Finely dice yellow onion.

2. In a soup pot, melt down butter. Add in onion and cook until it becomes translucent.

3. Add in minced garlic and cook for about three minutes.

4. Add in two heaping tablespoons of flour and mix it into butter. This is the roux that will thicken your bisque. Stir very frequently for about four minutes.

5. Add in chicken broth and mix quickly to combine flour mixture with broth.

6. Add in heavy whipping cream and mix or whisk to combine well.

7. Add in onion powder, garlic powder, Tony’s and salt to taste.

8. Add in canned and frozen corn. Bring to a low simmer and cook covered for 15 minutes.

9. After 15 minutes, fold in your lump crab meat. Cover and simmer an additional 15 minutes.

10. Serve with crispy garlic bread and a salad on the side.

* I sometimes save some lump crab to the side to serve on top. I have also used imitation crab meat or canned crab meat for this recipe before.
