Parent to Parent When we first got our dogs, Bowser and Pepper, it was our two girls who had been begging for a dog. And to this day, both Hanna and Haylee love the dogs with all their hearts. They both wish the dogs would sleep with them, want to take them everywhere, and offer them plenty of affection. But some dogs have a way of deciding for themselves who they “belong to”. And within a few months, it was very evident that neither Hanna nor Haylee
holds that position for either dog. The dogs like the girls just fine, I guess (at least more than my oldest son, for whom they have an intense dislike), but they both decided pretty quickly that they belong to my younger son, Daniel.
But David (who, as I mentioned earlier, they do not like) came in next, and both dogs became extremely nervous. You could see their relief when Daniel finally made his entrance, and neither one of them would let him out of their sight for several days.
They’ll sleep with one of the girls occasionally, but most of the time, you can find both of them in Daniel’s room. And if Daniel isn’t home during the day, they will sit on the couch with Hanna or Haylee; but as soon as he arrives, they run off to sit next to their master instead. Pepper also likes me, but only because I take her on longer walks than Daniel does. She really likes to walk, so every time I come into the house, she follows me around with her tail wagging until we go out. Bowser on the other hand, is a bit lazy and sometimes needs to be dragged out of the house. Unless of course, Daniel is coming – then he practically runs out the door.
Now in July, Daniel is going on a two-week road trip with his uncle. That will be his longest absence ever, and I’m not sure how the poor dogs are going to cope. They’ll be depressed by day two, but I imagine they are going to be absolutely frantic with worry by day thirteen! Maybe the girls will get a little bit of extra cuddle time with Bowser and Pepper, but David is probably going to need to steer clear – I’m sure he’s going to be their primary suspect!
So you can imagine that any time Daniel is gone for more than a few hours, the dogs get pretty anxious. For example, our family went on a 5-day cruise last month. When we got home, I was the first person in the door, and Pepper at least was happy to see me.
