source, and it exists in a few variations, but the premise is that prospective parents should complete a series of tests or exercises to determine whether they are cut out for parenthood. Here are a few of the best:
Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage.
Mess Test: Smear peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Place a fish stick behind the couch and leave it there all summer.
This might be my favorite! Since my oldest was about three years old, I have not taken a child to a store (any store—not just grocery stores) without saying at least half a dozen times, “Put that back.” This is followed closely by the more precise, but very necessary, “Put that back and then come here with your hands and arms empty.” And still, I regularly end up buying things I did not intend to because someone snuck them into the cart or onto the conveyor.
Yep—while you’re at it, also add a little nacho cheese and the tomato sauce from a Chef Boyardee can! Thankfully, I have no personal experience with the fish stick, but I can definitely see that happening!
Parenting magazines often have advice for prospective parents to help them determine whether or not they are ready to have children. I always wonder how useful those articles are, since most people don’t really read parenting magazines until they are already parents. Typical indicators of readiness might include things like financial security, emotional stability, etc. But more accurate indicators can be found in an Internet article that’s been floating around for a while. I don’t know the original
Toy Test: Obtain a 55-gallon box of Legos. Have a friend spread them all over the house. Put on a blindfold and take off your shoes. Try to walk to the bathroom or kitchen. Do not scream because this would wake a sleeping child. Actually, my little brothers were worse offenders with the Legos than my kids are. My kids’ weapon of choice is puddles of water on the tile or wood floors that will make your feet slide right out from under you. The puddles could result from a dripping wet child getting out of the shower or pool, an ice cube that fell out of the freezer and got left to melt in the middle of the floor, or just a cup of water dumped on the floor—they’re not picky! Grocery Store Test: Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop.
But like the vast majority of mothers out there, I wouldn’t trade motherhood for anything in the world. I want to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all of our readers—stay safe around those toys, and remember that one day, we may actually feel a little lonely going to the grocery store without any little ones to throw extra juice boxes and chips and candy bars into our carts.

With Mother’s Day and Graduation fast approaching, here are two unique and creative crafts you can make with the kids. Both crafts are extremely simple to make, and yet they each make a great presentation.
Graduation Cap Card / Mother’s Day Framed Footprint Art Invitation • Art paper • Drop cloth • Black cardstock • Child-safe, non-toxic washable paint. Tempera paints are a good choice
• Materials to clean feet. • Picture Frame
Directions: 1. Select clean area outdoors or put down drop cloth for work area. Avoid working on a carpeted or hardwood surface due to the messy nature of this project. 2. Clean child’s feet. Have some fun with this step! 3. Coat child’s foot either by covering it with a paint brush or by asking the child to step into a tray filled with paint. 4. Press child’s foot onto the art paper. Repeat with other foot. 5. Repeat process with other children. 6. Paint the body of each butterfly. 7. Let paint dry and then paint on names of children and a personalized message at bottom. 8. Frame art and give to mom! Tip: When done, you may want to take a picture of the artwork and upload it to your computer. Then not only is it forever saved, but you can use it to print copies, make photo gifts or use it in a photo book.

Glue invitation or photo onto the inside of the card. 5. Glue button onto the center of the top of the card. 6. Using black and silver thread create tassel and attach to the button. You can also buy premade tassels from most craft stores. You may even want to match the school colors instead of using black. 7. Tuck the flaps as you would the top of a cardboard box.

HOW TO TREAT A
WOMAN by Tony Dungy A few years back, during a press conference preceding a playoff game, a reporter asked me what I had done Friday afternoon to prepare—presumably for the game. But Friday afternoons during the season have always been personal time for us as a staff. I learned from Chuck Noll that you don’t change your schedule just because it’s a playoff game. So because we finished early on Friday, I went home and cleaned the house. Lauren had been out of town and was due back that evening, so I wanted her to come home to a clean house. This was something I could do to aid her wellbeing, and at that time it was a better gift than taking her out or buying her an expensive piece of jewelry. When I told the reporter how I spent my time, he laughed at what he thought was a joke. But I was serious. “I cleaned the house,” I repeated.
I try to find ways that I can chip in to make our house a sanctuary for Lauren. I learned that from my dad, who would give my mom some space and time to herself by taking us kids out to a park or otherwise keeping us occupied for
an afternoon. This gave Mom a chance to go off and shop or whatever—something just for her. As much as he enjoyed doing things with her, he knew that giving her the gift of time—away from us—was just as important. But he also made sure there were times that we all did things together as a family, he and my mom included. That was important for two reasons: first, he was making memories with all of us as a family unit, and second, he was modeling his behavior toward my mom in front of us. We didn’t realize it at the time, but it left a deep impression upon all of us. My brother and I were able to see how to honor and respect a woman. My two sisters were developing a point of reference for qualities they should look for in a husband. How many girls settle for substandard relationships because they don’t have that frame of reference? Too many men are continually baffled by their wives or can’t figure out how to interact with their families. There are countless books on how women think, so I’ll leave it at this; they are different. That much I’ve figured out. They are not men. I know that seems ridiculously obvious, but we can’t approach them as we would one of the guys. So how do we do it? Be involved with them—without bringing our own agendas. Again, do everything for the benefit of your loved one. Without being involved—deeply involved—with Lauren
for all these years and trying to listen to not only her words but also her heart, I wouldn’t have made any progress at all. We’ve invested time in our marriage. We’ve talked in evenings about finances and children. We’ve gone on dates. As much as possible, I’ve tried to create an environment on her terms. The interesting and blessed thing about that is this: she’s tried to do the same for me. And the most important way to show that love to your wife is to be involved: as a leader, listener, and encourager. Lead by helping with discipline, setting curfews and ground rules for the television and other technology use. Lead by being in unity with your wife. And listen—not to solve the problems of the day, as so often we will try to do. Just listen so she knows you care. She’s smart enough to solve her own problems, but she may appreciate your input even more if it’s offered at an appropriate time—later. In the meantime, tell her you love her, offer encouragement for something she’s tried or wants to try, and hold her every time she comes close. Be there for her. Loving the woman in your life follows the same principle of the old countryfair raffle rules: must be present to win.

Registering Last Minute for Summer Camps?
Here Is What Parents Need To Know To Stay Stress-Free. You’ve been a little busy getting your child to games and recitals, making sure assignments get turned in, and preparing lunches. Somehow May has snuck up on you! Now you realize that there are only a few weeks left until summer and you haven’t registered for summer camps yet. Don’t worry, PLAY Performing Arts is sharing this guide to last-minute summer camp planning to help you avoid stress while making this an amazing ‘not bummer summer’ for your child.
Identify Your Child’s Interest. It may seem overwhelming but there are only seven to nine weeks of summer that you may need to find camps. Start with what you already know about how your child likes to spend time. Make a list of your child’s top 10 interests. Do it today while waiting in car line and then ask for child’s feedback on the drive home. What made the list? Is it music, singing, acting, Hamilton, or Harry Potter? Find Out About Camps. Start by finding out if any of the organized activity that your child has been involved in the last year are offering summer camps? Next, take to social media and post that you’re looking for camps related to your child’s top 10 interests. Specifically list the interests and ask for dates of camps. Ask for friends and family to share any camps that they’ve already registered. While you’re waiting for replies to your post you can take a look through Gulf Coast Family Newspaper’s Summer Camp Guide and advertisements for summer camps where you’ll find PLAY Performing Arts listed.
Make a Camp List. Putting together a simple list of the camps you’ve found about will help you manage the registration process and avoid realizing later in summer that you’ve double booked against a planned vacation. Your list should include columns for child’s interest, camp names, dates, cost, and contact info. Also note if any friends have registered or are interested in a camp. Someone you know has probably already registered for summer camp with PLAY Performing Arts. www.gulfcoastfamily.org
Contact the Camps. Call to find out if there are still openings and if the organization and camp is really a good match for your child. Find out what a typical day is like at camp. Get a sense for how much structured activity vs. “free time” there is over the course of a day. Ask about the background and teaching experience of the staff that will be leading and assisting with the camp. PLAY Performing Arts’ staff teaches classes and lessons year-round in addition to camps. Find out if a performance, or project is presented on the last day of camp to see how closely the final product matches your child’s interest.
Plan to Negotiate. You may feel like being late in the summer camp registration game has totally put you at a disadvantage but you still may be able to negotiate for a spot or even on pricing. If you’re asking about multiple weeks of camp or even registering siblings then you may have leverage that you didn’t realize. Only have one child to register for one week? No worries. If you know someone who has
already registered for the camp then mention the family’s name. You can always find a friend to register with your child. Don’t forget to ask about the first and last weeks of camp being offered to see if it matches your child’s interest. These are usually the last camps to fill up.
Lastly, remember why you are doing this. Camp is such a great way for your child to make new friends and grow in areas that he/she are passionate. Research shows that camp provides a unique vital learning experience with campers improving in areas like social integration and self-confidence. A couple of years ago, an adoptive mother voiced her struggle with post adoption services and pulled at the heartstrings of our agency. She exposed a need in our community that was underrepresented. There is a long standing belief that on the day of adoption, all of their children’s ‘issues’ would disappear. While most children find comfort in knowing they’re in their forever home, working towards healing from their past truly begins after adoption. As a result of this mother’s plea, Camelot Community Care obtained state funding in order to serve pre and post adoptive families; who have either adopted from Hillsborough County or are currently living in Hillsborough County. The main goals of the program are to connect adoptive families to one another for peer support, link families to community resources, provide adoption competent counseling, and support families from the beginning through the many years post adoption. Our support groups encourage 20 • May 2017
the whole family to attend; the parents meet in one room with an experienced adoptive family leader. The children meet with program staff who engage in fun activities focusing on social skills, self-esteem building, anxiety reduction, anger management and peer interactions. A mantra of the program is to connect with families, from the beginning of the adoption process, in order to give them the tools to overcome the ups and downs of parenting children from difficult pasts. Our team is made up of three very dedicated women who have extensive experience in the adoption and foster care realms. We are called to do this work so that families don’t have to struggle in isolation. So come see what we are about; join us at the support group closest to you, give us a call or shoot us an email! Former Pinellas County School Student and Astronaut Details Her Life In Space Astronaut Nicole StottRetired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott fielded a range of questions this past April as she spoke with Tarpon Springs Middle School. What was it like to be at zero gravity? When you come back from the space station, is it hard to walk? How do you sleep if you can float up to the top? How do you use the bathroom? How do you brush your teeth? The students wanted to know how the everyday routine of one’s life gets done while living in space. Stott obliged their curiosity with her answers. An engineer, Stott worked for NASA for 27 years before retiring. During her career with NASA, she served as Flight Engineer for Space Shuttle Discovery on two expeditions. In 2009 she spent three months at the International Space Station and in 2011 she spent two

weeks. She and even took part in the first NASA Tweetup from space. Stott is a former Pinellas County Schools student and a graduate of Clearwater High School. When asked what were some of her favorite moments about space, Stott said “it was looking out the window and seeing earth.” In addition to Tarpon Springs Middle, Stott visited Sunset Hills Elementary and Tarpon Springs High.

Knowledge of History Leads to a National Championship at Largo High Largo High School’s History Bowl team took first place for the varsity middle bracket division at the National History Bowl and Bee National Championships. The championships were held April 21–23 in Washington D.C. and Arlington, Va. There were 144 teams from across the country competing. Members of the winning team are: Jackson Gillette, Ethan Daniel, Noah Denker, Chase Timberlake, Aden
Yacobi, and Charles Phillips. The coaches are Deborah Pettingill and Scott Kaplan. In addition to wining the team championship, team member Noah Denker placed in the top 10 in an individual competition. The National History Bee and Bowl promotes global history education by providing students with an appreciation for the past that will help them to better navigate the future.

Academic Team Wins State Title The Pinellas County Academic Team won the Division 1 state championship at the 32nd annual Commissioner’s Academic Challenge this past weekend at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. Members of the winning team are: Jackson Gillette, senior at Largo High School, Ethan Daniel, senior at Largo High School, Chris Eschler, senior at Palm Harbor University High School, Logan Grutchfield, senior at Palm Harbor University High School, Michael Fulton, senior at East Lake High School, and Andrew Whigham, junior at Seminole High School.

Each student from the winning team received a Florida High School Athletic Association medal and a $500 scholarship. Logan Grutchfield was named to the All Florida team and received an additional $1,000 scholarship. The team was coached by Scott Kaplan of Largo High School and Britt Moseley of Seminole High School.

This quick and easy recipe will dazzle your kids with it’s “magic” or be the perfect surprise sweet ending to a Spring meal. These whimsical chocolate bowls can hold ice cream, berries and cream, pudding, candies, anything that you or your sweet heart desires!
Chocolate Pudding Cups • 8 to 10 water balloons • 16-ounces semi-sweet chocolate
• 2 large packages instant chocolate pudding
• Whipped cream • Chocolate sprinkles
1. Blow up balloons (with air) to desired bowl size and tie to close. 2. Break chocolate into small pieces and place in a shallow microwave-safe dish; microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring occasionally until melted; let cool for 5 minutes. 3. Spray bottom half of each balloon lightly with cooking spray. 4. Spoon about 1 tablespoon chocolate onto a wax paper-lined baking sheet; dip a balloon into the chocolate to thoroughly cover the bottom half, and then center the balloon in the chocolate on the tray; repeat with remaining balloons. 5. Place bowls in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes, until hardened. 6. Prepare pudding according to package directions. 7. Remove bowls from refrigerator; carefully pop each balloon and peel it out of the bowls.
8. Fill bowls with pudding and top with whipped cream and sprinkles.

with Jim Daly Q: How do I know if I’m “enabling” my husband’s compulsive gambling problem? I don’t want to do anything that might encourage his behavior. Jim: I’ve tapped our staff counselors for this answer. “Enabling” is essentially any action that makes it easier for the addict (in this case, the gambler) to pursue his addiction (gambling). It’s an unwitting, well-meaning, but nonetheless destructive response to a loved one’s addictive behavior. There are three basic categories of enablement: covering up and covering for the gambler; attempting to control his behavior; and cooperating with him. There really isn’t space in this venue to adequately describe and unpack each of these types of enablement. But it’s enough to say that all of them just make things worse in the long run. By covering up for him, you’ll only be putting off the natural consequences of his gambling and indirectly green-lighting further destructive behavior. Trying to control him might backfire and sever your relationship entirely. Cooperating with him won’t encourage any change, and could draw you into the same destructive pattern of addiction yourself. Addictions of all kinds are progressive in nature. If your husband is a confirmed compulsive gambler, as you say, then it’s only a matter of time before his escalating condition lands him in some serious trouble. That’s why it’s critical to confront the issue head-on. Urge him to get some kind of professional help. If

he’s unwilling to listen, see if you can enlist the help of an objective third party—a pastor, a relative or a male friend who agrees with your assessment of the situation and who would be willing to come alongside you in order to strengthen your case. If all else fails, try to pull together a group of friends and supporters who can help you stage a formal intervention. You may want to include a licensed counselor or therapist who specializes in this kind of activity. Overcoming addiction of any kind is a long process that requires specialized guidance. FATHER’S ABSENCE WEIGHS ON ADULT CHILD Q: My father abandoned our family when I was young. Now that I’m getting older and really need his input, he’s not here for me. Do you have advice for dealing with this pain? Jim: If your mother is available, a starting point would be to tell her that you’re having a hard time right now. Even if she’s dealing with “stuff” of her own, she may have important insights to share. Did your dad have a problem with alcohol or drugs? That wouldn’t excuse his leaving, of course, but it might help explain it. Maybe you could talk to your mom about the possibility of writing your father a letter. Ask her if she has his address, or if there’s someone else who might know where he is. Perhaps his parents or siblings would be able to forward a letter to him for you. After this discussion with your mom, you can begin writing to him when you feel ready. Express your feelings
openly and honestly. Ask any questions that are on your mind. Let him know how important it is that he responds. There’s no guarantee that he’ll answer, but it’s worth a try. The process of writing can be beneficial for you, too. It’s often a very healing experience to put our deepest thoughts and emotions down on paper. Whatever happens, remember the real Easter message of renewal: God loves us so much that He went to immeasurable lengths to repair our fractured relationship with Him. He’s sad about the pain you’ve experienced as a result of being abandoned by your earthly dad. Psalm 68:5 tells us that God is a “father to the fatherless.” Turn to Him with your pain.

HELPING YOU KIDS LEARN TO EXERCISE SELF-CONTROL Q: Our sons are 6 and 4 years old. Like probably all parents, we want to raise them to be mature, responsible children. But we’re not quite sure how to go about that. Any suggestions? Danny Huerta, Vice President, Parenting and Youth: Maturity and responsibility are all about self-control. Some parents believe they can instill that into children by sheer force of will. In other words, by making them behave. It is possible for Moms and Dads to exert their authority and try to force their children to act a certain way— and at times, this may be necessary with young children. But overpowering your kids’ wills as a primary parenting strategy isn’t the way they’re going to learn self-control. As your kids grow, the focus should increasingly be on helping them learn how to choose between wise and unwise decisions. The way they do that is by experiencing the consequences of their actions. Clearly lay out your ex-
pectations, then allow them to choose their own path. But make sure they know the consequences for their choices are theirs to bear. Wise decisions will earn them more freedom and opportunities, but unwise choices will cause them to lose more and more privileges. Children will only grow into maturity if they learn to exercise self-control and to take responsibility for themselves. And that will only happen if we parents gradually take our hands off the choices our kids make and give them a chance to be accountable for their own actions.

But something changes in many parents as our children get older. As the consequences for mistakes become more severe, we become less tolerant of failure because we want them to succeed and do well. We’d never call it perfection, but on a practical level that’s exactly what our kids feel like we expect. We have great intentions, but create unnecessary pressure that ends up working against them. They need—and respond to—encouragement with guidance.
Q: As a dad, I expect my children to meet high standards every time. That’s how my father raised me, and I turned out OK. But my wife thinks we should cut them some slack. What’s the balance?
So if perfection has become the unspoken rule in your house, re-center yourself as a parent. The goal is to raise healthy, resilient children, who are willing to get back up, grow from their mistakes and keep moving forward.

The first step in speaking life giving words is to have life in you. I look at the words I speak to those around me in order gauge what’s happening in my inner life. Take time to think about how you speak to your children or your spouse. Be determined to speak life into those around you.

A Tool for Evaluating Your Children’s Screen Time

by Adam Holz, PluggedIn.com We hear a lot about the hazard of excessive screen these days. For ourselves. For our kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics refined its recommendations for children’s screen time last October. For babies below the age of 18 months, the AAP suggests no screens at all. Between that milestone and 2 years, screens can be introduced. Kids between the ages of 2 and 5 should get no more than an hour of “high quality” programming, and even then with their parents engaged and watching with them. Over that age, however, the AAP’s recommendations get a bit more subjective, shifting from a quantitative measure to a more qualitative assessment: “For children ages 6 and older, place consistent limits on the time spent using media, and the types of media, and make sure media does not take the place of adequate sleep, physical activity and other behaviors essential to health.”
As parents, we may struggle a bit with older kids to define when screen time crosses the threshold into an unhealthy or compulsive behavior. It’s not merely a matter of monitoring hours spent with various screens (TV, computers, smartphones, tablets, video games), but assessing how that interaction is affecting them as well. Dr. David Greenfield is the founder of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction (virtual-addiction.com) and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. His site offers a variety of simple, quick “Addiction Tests” that give a baseline assessment regarding unhealthy online engagement. One of those tests is titled, “Child Technology Test: Are Your Children Too Connected?” The test’s 12 yesno questions—such as, “Do you find your child spending more and more time online or on their digital devices
(computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone) than they seem to realize?”—yield a score and a more concrete picture of just how enmeshed in digital technology your child may or may not be. (Other tests on the site can similarly help adults assess their Internet habits in general, as well as more specific self-assessments with regard to pornography and your degree of digital distraction.)
Screens are everywhere these days. And resources like this can help give us a more objective sense of how we and our kids are interacting with them. Too Young to App? Not only are mobile devices more widespread than ever, but the folks using them are younger than ever, too. How young? Well, a study conducted at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia discovered that some little ones are using smartphones and tablets before they can talk or even walk. The center surveyed hundreds of parents, discovering that 14 percent of
1-year-olds and 26 percent of 2-yearolds spend at least an hour a day using mobile media – watching TV shows, playing games, using apps. By age 4, that figure climbs to nearly 40 percent. The study’s author, Dr. Hilda Kabali, said that accepted guidelines recommend parents limit children’s screen time to two hours a day. “But most children

aren’t spending time on TV anymore. They’re using tablets and smartphones.” “Prolonged engagement in such activities limit parental interaction and affects a child’s capacity for social development,” Kabali added. “Not to mention that too much sedentary entertainment can contribute to obesity.”

Did You Know Alcohol is the leading drug of choice among young people today, and current advertising trends aren’t likely to stem the tide. According to new research published in JAMA Pediatrics, nearly two-thirds of U.S. high school students reported trying alcohol, almost 35 percent reported drinking in the previous 30 days, and more than 21 percent reported binge drinking – having six or more drinks on a single occasion. The study concluded that alcohol advertising that reaches young people, particularly on TV is one cause of underage drinking. It can help lead nondrinkers to begin drinking and experienced drinkers to consume more. And the more receptive a viewer is to alcohol ads, the greater the risk of problem drinking in the future.

Benefits to Summer Travel
With summer approaching it seems an appropriate time to discuss the benefits of summer travel and fun. In general, travel broadens our understanding of the world. It helps to develop a child’s background knowledge and an interest in new experiences. Resources can vary from family to family and even from year to year but the benefits of family travel are not relative to the budget. Fun does not have to be expensive. The benefits of family travel include a reboot and change from the routine, extended time as a family to strengthen relationships, and the opportunity to learn

Reboot and Change the Routine
One benefit of summer travel is the opportunity to reboot. We all need a recharge every now and then, including our children after a long school year. A change of scenery and routine for a week or two, allows the family to reassess priorities and reflect on what is important. Wherever you go, I encourage you to unplug-no television or computers, no Facebook or
smart phones. If that seems like an impossible task, try unplugging during the day and only using devices in the evening, or unplug every other day if you are gone for more than a week. Family interaction is significantly more valuable, but unplugging some is better than not unplugging at all. Do it together so everyone is unplugged at the same time. Strengthen Family Relationships
Another benefit of summer travel is the opportunity to strengthen family relationships. Siblings, who may not “play” together during the school year, learn to enjoy each other’s company when other distractions are eliminated. Playing games as a family and having conversation in the evening without interruptions, can also help to strengthen the family bond.

Lastly, family travel provides an opportunity to learn and experience something new together. Maybe it’s white water rafting, or jet skiing, or hiking in the mountains. because you are teaching them real life. Few experiences are more humbling than asking forgiveness from a toddler, but it is so important. They need to see that you are not perfect, that you accept responsibility for your mistakes, and that you are willing to apologize. This sets a far better example for them than constantly trying to be perfect.

because you are teaching them life is about more than just work. I know this seems contradictory to the previous point, but isn’t that life, too? You need a little balance.

because your family is your priority. We’ve all had moments of frustration over a missed moms’ night because a sick kid or school play comes first. Somewhere in the recesses of their minds, though, our kids see those choices and know they are loved.
7. You take time for yourself…
because being a happier person makes you a better mom. Yes, sometimes we have to miss out on things we would like to do. But selfcare is important, too, and it’s okay to leave Dad with a fussy baby or put the kids to bed early for a bubble bath or do whatever it is that restores your soul and sanity.
8. You feel guilty…
because you care. You want the best for them, and that is not always easily discernible. If my child hates baseball after three weeks, should I make him finish the season or let him quit? If kids are arguing, should I step in or let them sort it out? Public, private, or homeschool? Our days are full of endless decisions, and what’s right for one family isn’t always right for the next. Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. But if you are loving your kids and seeking the best for them, you are on the right track. You’ve got this, Mom.
4. You make them do chores…
because you are teaching them to be responsible. They will not always be little, and you are preparing them for adulthood by teaching them life isn’t always about playing.
