Parent to Parent Before I had kids, I used to cook and bake a lot. Even after my oldest, David, was born, I still cooked most of our meals at home. But as my family has grown, and the pickiness has increased, I’ve really gotten away from it. I still admire families who make a full meal and require the kids to eat it or go hungry. But with two extremely picky kids, one moderately picky one, and only Daniel who will eat almost anything, I’ll admit I don’t want to spend my limited energy that way! So we eat out more than we eat at home. Not at expensive places most of the time, but at places where everyone can get what they like, and maybe more importantly, where we can leave the mess behind!
With Thanksgiving coming up, once again we have a decision to make. Do I cook a turkey and all the associated trimmings at home (taking hours of my time and making a huge mess of my kitchen), or do we go to Cracker Barrel where we can feed our family of six a full turkey dinner for a little over $60, including drinks and dessert. When you take leftovers out of the equation, I am pretty certain that I would spend at least that much to prepare a Thanksgiving meal at home. Consider the pies alone (even when I did bake a lot, I wasn’t good at making pie crust, so those will need to be purchased from a bakery). I have a 19-year-old who prefers apple, a 15-year-old who prefers pecan, a 12-year-old who prefers pumpkin, and a 9-year-old who prefers key lime. That’s the single best thing about eating out, even on Thanksgiving - everyone can order their favorite slice of pie (with one exception since I think the key lime is out of season in November) and their favorite side dishes. So if Daniel wants sweet potatoes (something none of the other kids like), he can have them. If David just wants triple mashed potatoes, he can get them. And if Haylee would rather forego stuffing and potatoes altogether in favor of macaroni and cheese and applesauce, no problem!
But every year when I suggest it, my kids still beg me, “Can’t we please cook a turkey at home?” I always find it interesting that they use the word “we” when they really mean “you.” None of the kids is actually offering to help prepare a feast that day. But I digress… Unless we are traveling, most of the time they win, and this year will probably not be an exception. So pretty soon it will be time to start picking out that turkey, narrowing down those pie choices, and making room for plenty of leftovers. However you choose to celebrate your Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you have a very enjoyable time with your family. Until next time,

After five years of daily training and eight operations on his Achilles tendons, Derek had won the first two heats and was running in the semifinals of the 400 meters. Things were going as planned until, coming out of the first turn, he heard a snap and felt a sharp pain in his left leg. Derek went down in a heap on the track as he realized that his left hamstring had exploded, and with it, his dreams of an Olympic medal. He got to his feet and began to run—hop, really—to finish the race. He later said that he was determined to finish and therefore waved off the race officials, who were running toward him with a stretcher.

Items Needed: Brown T-shirt • Large package of assorted felt / fabric sheets • Scissors • Fabric Glue – Spray can works best 1. Cut out the tail feathers from the felt sheets. Use a variety of colors, but make feathers all the same size. 2. Cut out the eyes, the beak, and the snoods. 3. Spray each feather with fabric glue. Arrange the feathers on the back of the T-shirt, working from the outside in – on both sides. 4. Glue the eyes, beak and snoods onto the front of the T-shirt. 5. Let the glue dry and you are all set for your Thanksgiving fun!

Items Needed: Little pumpkin • Brown foam sheet • Yellow foam sheet • Red foam sheet • Artificial fall leaves • Googly eyes • Hot glue gun • Scissors

1. Cut out the body parts of the turkey: head and feet from brown foam, the beak from the yellow foam, and the “snoods” from the red foam. 2. Using your hot glue gun, glue the back of the head to the stem of the pumpkin. 3. Glue the feet to the base of the pumpkin and the beak and snoods to the head. 4. Glue the googly eyes above the beak. 5. Arrange the leaves in a fan pattern and then glue together. Then glue the leaves to the back of the pumpkin to make the tail feathers. 6. November Family of the Month
Meet the Corradino Family Pumpkin pie, cooler climate, corn mazes and their anniversary—these make November special for Marc and Bethany, who refer to the Tampa Bay area as “our home” because “home is always the place we enjoy getting back to.” But the Corradino family finds joy in reaching out from home to serve others. And that is by design. This father and mother of Gulf Coast’s November Family of the Month set the example. “We are striving to be a family that thinks of others first and serves.” The Corradinos enjoy their life in Florida when they are here in the states. “We love the warm weather and enjoy the relaxed pace of life in the Bay area—not to mention the easy access to beautiful beaches. We also, love the fact that we are so close to family!” Prior to coming back home to the Tampa area here in 2016, the Corradinos had been working in Thailand for the previous three years. “We serve the people of
Thailand by meeting many of their needs such as teaching them English, mentoring young men and women, working with orphans, and sharing with the people how they can have abundant life in Jesus Christ.” Bethany and Marc approach parenting with the same drive and passion as well. “We love our girls; they are amazing in so many ways. We love watching Audrey, Chloe, and Mimi grow, learn and discover. Meet the Kids Audrey, our oldest, is very kind, mature, and loves teaching her little sisters. She is also very curious and wants to learn about everything. She loves reading, listening and telling stories that she makes up on her own. Chloe our little “ladybug” is constantly full of energy and excitement. She’s always in motion and loves cuddling with Mommy which is the only time she actually slows down. She runs like the wind wherever she goes and loves to collect things like shells, rocks, and ladybugs. Mimi, our two year old, is a sweet delight. songs. She is very bold and not afraid of anything except for alligators! When her big sisters get out of line she’s sure to let them know - us too! Our Second Home Five years ago, my wife, Bethany, and I believed that God was leading us to do something unusual and different— something outside of the cubicle. Up until that time I (Marc) was working as a graphic designer in Tampa, and Bethany was busy raising our girls in our small home in Clearwater. As a family, the more we studied the Bible, prayed together, and searched our own hearts, the more we realized that God was leading us as a family to go to a people and a place where we had never been to before—which just happened to be on the other side of the world! Thailand is located within the 10/40-longitude/latitude window of Southeast Asia. It’s hot there, I mean edge of the equator hot! The people there are very friendly and polite. Thai food is delicious, and spicy! The people speak a tonal language, which is one of the top 10 most difficult languages in the world to learn. The main religion in Thailand is Buddhism with some other minority religions as well. Buddhist’s believe that through making merit or trying to do good works that they may attain a good afterlife through reincarnation. Many of
the Thai people have descended from the Chinese located north of Thailand. The Thai people are proud, having never been colonized by European powers, unlike their surrounding neighboring countries. As a result, Thailand’s rich culture, tradition, and language has largely been maintained for hundreds of years. We definitely encourage you to visit! For the past three years, we have spent a lot of time studying the Thai language and culture, building relationships with many Thai people, and sharing the good news of the Gospel. We are heading back to Thailand in December to the megacity of Bangkok (home to about 15 million people), where we plan to serve for the next 2 years. During this time, we will be working with the Bangkok City Team to plant a church in the inner city, and we plan to launch a new English Center where students throughout the city can come and study. Our vision and desire is to see this first church grow into a network of ministries throughout the city.

“Thank you” Those two words are some of the most powerful words you can say to your kids. My guess is we can all say that a little more. And I’m not talking about only when they do something you’ve asked them to do. I’m talking about thanking them just for being them. I try to say it to my kids as much as possible, and when I do, the smile on their face can light up a city block. When I say it to our 8-year-old, he seems to be part surprised, part flattered, but most of all, loved. It’s important to let your kids know you are thankful for them in your lives and that you appreciate your family.
My life wouldn’t be the same without my kids. They need to know that. Sometimes our reactions to the things our kids do, or even the sacrifices we make for them, can make it look like they are a distraction. They aren’t and we need to communicate that consistently. For this month’s basic training, here are 5 ways to say thank you to your kids for being your kids.

I thought that it would be helpful to share with you all some Holiday savings tips for shopping both online and in-store. Many stores are already leaking their Black Friday ads online. This allows you to get your “plan of action” together for shopping. Having a plan of action not only helps you plan what stores to shop at, but it will also help to avoid overspending at the register. Shopping at an outlet mall on Black Friday will not only save you money, but time as well. Many times, this can be a one-stop shopping opportunity and you can get a majority of your shopping done in just one place! If you are like me and have little ones at home, getting out to the store can sometimes be challenging. I love to shop from the comfort of my own home in my pajamas! You can really find some great deals online if you know what to look for. Check out online sites that will give you cash back for shopping through them. Sites like Ebates will give you a certain percentage of cash back when you use them to make online purchases at stores. For example, if you know that you are going to make a purchase through Target.com, if you shop via Ebates, you will get cash back. Getting paid to shop has never been easier! Also, before you make online purchases, find out if there is a coupon code for that particular store you are buying from. One of my favorite promotional/coupon code sites is RetailMeNot.com, and I use them on a regular basis. Many stores like Walmart will offer the same items that you will find in-store on Black Friday online. Check to see what time these offers go live, but this may save you a trip to the store if you are not into the big crowds. Be sure to utilize Free Shipping codes whenever possible. At this time of the year, many stores will offer Free Shipping on any online purchase regardless of the size of your order. Thanksgiving Day is for fun, food, and football. So when the food is enjoyed and the football is over (or the score is out of reach), it is time for fun! We have some creative activities for kids and adults alike…rain, shine, or snow. • Pin the tail on the turkey. Have your kids draw a turkey with a missing feather and feathered “tails” to take its place. Put a piece of tape on each tail and see who can get closest to the spot of the missing feather.
• If it’s warm enough, head outside. Have three-legged races, play a “Pass the sweet potato” relay, or have a turkey trot race where everyone has to strut like a turkey. To make it even more fun, give out a trophy every year to the big winner. Inscribe the year and winner’s name and have them bring back the trophy next Thanksgiving to hand off to the next winner. • If you’re stuck inside, play board games. Have a chess tournament, a monopoly marathon, or play Pictionary.
• Get a spiral notebook or journal. Write the date and have everyone write down what they’re most thankful for from the past year. Make it a tradition. Bring out the book every year and add new memories.
• Give each person a clothes pin to wear. Each time someone says “Christmas,” “holiday,” or “Thanksgiving,” they have to give up their pin. The person with the most pins wins.
• Decorating cookies isn’t just for Christmas. Prebake some sugar or gingerbread cookies. Have a decorating station where the kids and adults can decorate Thanksgivingthemed cookies.
• Have everyone bring a toiletry item (comb, brush, razor), snack food, or other small gift to pack up to send to a soldier overseas.
• Write down the names of everyone at your Thanksgiving dinner on slips of paper. Draw a name and tell what you’re most thankful for in that person. • Read the story of the Mayflower or the first Thanksgiving. Better yet, act it out! • Have a blank card or have the children make a card. Have everyone sign it and mail it to a family member or a friend who couldn’t join you.

Martha Stewart will not be dining with us this Thanksgiving Dear family and friends, Martha Stewart will not be dining with us this Thanksgiving. I’m telling you in advance, so don’t act surprised. Since Ms. Stewart won’t be coming, I’ve made a few small changes: Our sidewalk will not be lined with homemade, paper bag luminaries. After a trial run, it was decided that no matter how cleverly done, rows of flaming lunch sacks do not have the desired welcoming effect. Once inside, our guests will note that the entry hall is not decorated with the swags of Indian corn and fall foliage I had planned to make. Instead, I’ve gotten the kids involved in the decorating by having them track in colorful autumn leaves from the front yard. The mud was their idea. The dining table will not be covered with expensive linens, fancy china, or crystal goblets. If possible, we will use dishes that match and everyone will get a fork.

Since this IS Thanksgiving, we will refrain from using the plastic Peter Rabbit plate and the Santa napkins from last Christmas. Our centerpiece will not be the tower of fresh fruit and flowers that I promised. Instead we will be displaying a hedgehog-like decoration hand-crafted from the finest construction paper. The artist assures me it is a turkey. We will be dining fashionably late. The children will entertain you while you wait. I’m sure they will be happy to share every choice comment I have made regarding Thanksgiving, pilgrims and the turkey hotline. Please remember that most of these comments were made at 5:00 a.m. upon discovering that the turkey was still hard enough to cut diamonds. As accompaniment to the children’s recital, I will play a recording of tribal drumming. If the children should mention that I don’t own a recording of tribal drumming, or that tribal drumming sounds suspiciously like a frozen turkey in a clothes dryer, ignore them. They are lying.

It stands to reason that I will eventually win. When I do, we will eat.
We toyed with the idea of ringing a dainty silver bell to announce the start of our feast. In the end, we chose to keep our traditional method. We’ve also decided against a formal seating arrangement. When the smoke alarm sounds, please gather around the table and sit where you like.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind my young diners that “passing the rolls” is not a football play. Nor is it a request to bean your sister in the head with warm, tasty bread. Oh, and one reminder for the adults: For the duration of the meal, and especially while in the presence of young diners, we will refer to the giblet gravy by its lesser-known name: Cheese Sauce. If a young diner questions you regarding the origins or type of Cheese Sauce, plead ignorance.
Now, I know you have all seen pictures of one person carving a turkey in front of a crowd of appreciative onlookers. This will not be happening at our dinner. For safety reasons, the turkey will be carved in a private ceremony. I stress “private” meaning: do not, under any circumstances, enter the kitchen to laugh at me. Do not send small, unsuspecting children to check on my progress. I have an electric knife. The turkey is unarmed.
Before I forget, there is one last change. Instead of offering a choice among 12 different scrumptious desserts, we will be serving the traditional pumpkin pie, garnished with whipped cream and small fingerprints. You will still have a choice, though: take it or leave it. Thought you might all enjoy. Martha Stewart will not be dining with us this Thanksgiving. She probably won’t come next year either. I am thankful.

A Gentle Hug Just as I opened my laptop to begin typing this article, I received a text from the very birthmother I intended to write about. “Good Afternoon.” she text, followed by a smiley face, and as I read it, I could envision that easy, contagious smile of hers, and I felt myself smiling, too. When people speak of meeting someone who knows no strangers, they are speaking of this birth mom. I met her the first week of October and learned she was due to deliver in just a few short weeks. We sat down together to complete her Social and Medical History forms at the office, and by the time she answered the final question on the form, I knew I loved her. She is young and pretty and sweet, and I learned in that first meeting that smiles were no stranger to her face. She spoke proudly of her two-year-old daughter, who loved Frozen and who shared the same wide smile and bright eyes as her mother. We hugged each other goodbye and planned on meeting again in a few days. On the day of our second meeting, we talked more about her adoption plan and how she wanted her time in the hospital to go. We made a plan for her to call when she went into labor, no matter the time, and that I would be there for her as little or as much she needed or wanted me to be. That very night I received a call.
some sweets to snack on, and we sat and talked for awhile, sharing pictures and stories of our kids, until she told me she would like to go visit her BABY GIRL. I wheeled her to the NICU, as she was tender from her C-section. I helped settle her into the chair beside the baby’s hospital bassinet, and place BABY GIRL into her arms. I sat in the chair next to her and admired her admiring her baby. We talked about how she was happy she decided to meet the adoptive family and to spend time with BABY GIRL after all, as neither were a part of her original adoption plan. She talked about how sweet and kind and easy to get along the adoptive family was, and I wondered if she had any clue that she is all of those things, as well. The adoptive family arrived in NICU, and I left the 3 of them to spend alone time together with each other and BABY GIRL. I let the birth mom know I would be back that evening with my sons so we can keep her company over dinner. With my two boys in tow, I headed back to the hospital to visit the birthmother. I took her dinner order, which consisted of cake
and more cake, and headed for her room. I introduced her to my boys and the four us sat and ate together, talking about everything from Disney princesses to super heroes. My oldest son and her talked about the pros and cons of the Hulk, while my youngest son cuddled up next to her on the hospital bed. By the time we finished eating our dinners, the adoptive family had arrived to say goodnight. They came with updates on how well BABY GIRL was eating and how NICU had no concerns. I took some pictures of the birthmom and adoptive family, one of which my son photbombed. The adoptive family said goodnight and ,shortly after, my boys and I prepared to leave for the night, as well. “Gentle hugs.” I told the boys, “because her belly is tender.” Birthmom opened her arms real big. My oldest gave the first hug, but when it was my youngest son’s turn, he didn’t want to let go. He felt as I did the moment I met her…like we had known her for years. I gave her a big hug goodbye and kissed her on the top her head, assuring her I would see her in the morning. My boys and I loaded up in the car. It was a long day and well passed their bedtime, but as we drove home, I couldn’t think of anywhere else I wanted the three of us to be that evening than there in that hospital room with birthmom. I had known her for 4 days at that point. I loved her by day 1..and by day 4, so did my family.
Around 3 a.m. in the morning, she delivered a baby girl. Lisa Cuffaro, Destiny Adoption’s Director, had been there with her since midnight. “She rubbed my back whenever my mom needed a break.” she said of Lisa, who I informed the birthmother was well-versed in labor and delivery. I came to visit her first thing the next day after I dropped my boys off at school. I brought her

Several days after the dedication of the Gettysburg battlefield, the United States celebrated its first national Thanksgiving. Every year since then, our Nation has faithfully continued this tradition. The time has come once again to proclaim a day of thanksgiving, an occasion for Americans to express gratitude to their God and their country. In his remarks at Gettysburg, President Lincoln referred to ours as a Nation “under God.” We rejoice in the fact that, while we have maintained separate institutions of church and state over our 200 years of freedom, we have at the same time preserved reverence for spiritual beliefs. Although we are a pluralistic society, the giving of thanks can be a true bond of unity among our people. We can unite in gratitude for our individual freedoms and individual faiths. We can be united in gratitude for our Nation’s peace and prosperity when so many in this world have neither. As was written in the first Thanksgiving Proclamation 120 years ago, “No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. Having them help with the food preparation is a great way to help them get involved. This Seven-Layer Bean Dip is a simple appetizer that your kids will have a blast helping to prepare. The Mexican dip is very easy to make, is fairly healthy, tastes great and looks nice in a party setting! Also the individual serving cups are great at helping to stop the “double dippers.”
Individual 7-layer Bean Dip • 15-ounce can refried beans • 16-ounce container sour cream • 16-ounce container guacamole
• 8 ounces salsa • 4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
• Shredded lettuce • Chopped tomato
1. Warm beans slightly in microwave until soft, not hot (about 30 seconds). Spread ¼ cup into the bottom of 8 clear plastic cups. 2. Spread ¼ cup each of sour cream and guacamole over beans. 3. Spoon 2 tablespoons salsa over guacamole. 4. Top with cheese, lettuce, and tomato. 5. Serve with tortilla chips.

Young Health Talk: Flu Season As the flu season fast approaches, many of my patients are seeking my advice as to whether or not to get the flu shot. Firstly, I stress it’s their decision, but as for myself, I won’t be getting one. Your first response to this may be that firstly, a doctor, as a first responder, should arm himself against the flu in order to be available himself to treat the sick, and secondly he should do so as an example to others. Be assured, I have come by my decision after much study and deliberation, so let me list my reasons. It’s in February, at the end of the flu season, when the WHO (World Health Organization) gathers data from scientists from around the world, giving their best educated guess as to what flu strain will be the most prevalent come November/ December. Sometimes their prediction is accurate, sometimes it’s not. If their prediction is off, it means the flu shot prepared for that year’s flu is of little help. And even if they get it right, the
flu shot is not comprehensive enough to tackle all the types of flu strains circulating during flu season. Another reason I choose not to get the flu shot is that many patients, after getting the shot, come down with flu anyway, as this is a side effect of taking the vaccination. So what do I recommend instead? I have several tricks up my sleeve. Firstly, I make sure I’m getting enough protein each day. (Take your weight and divide by 2 – that is the protein in grams you should be consuming each day to maintain a healthy immune system). Secondly, I need to maintain my iodine levels. Thirdly, I need to take appropriate amounts of Vitamin C. Each person has a different tolerance level for Vitamin C. Take Vitamin C in small increments. Your goal is loose but formed stools. Diarrhea would be an indication that your body has hit its saturation point and you
by John D. Young, MD need to back down to the previous dosage. You’ll find that your daily dose may change. If you start fighting the flu, your body’s tolerance for vitamin C goes way up as it uses all the available C to fight the virus.

Blood tests are essential for identifying diseases at the earliest and most treatable stage possible. Pets can’t tell us when they’re ill— that’s where lab tests like blood analyses come help to detect disease early and help your pet live a happy and healthy long life.
The importance of blood tests.
Diseases detection through blood testing helps prevent and treat potentially dangerous illnesses. Sick or senior pets often have more than one disease affecting them, complicating diagnosis and treatment. Blood tests can help
pinpoint the problems. Some medications can harm pets with underlying problems like kidney or liver disease (including many pain and anti-inflammatory medications your senior pet may need). Blood tests can ensure your pet is healthy enough to take the medication. Even in young and healthy pets, lab testing gives us a valuable baseline picture of what represents good health for your individual pet. A recommended part of your pet’s annual exam, blood tests can spot health trends sooner, before they become more serious.

My 8-year-old cat is perfectly healthy but her doctor suggested a group of blood tests as part of her annual examination. Why?

INDECISIVE MOTHER-IN-LAW LEAVES HOLIDAY PLANS IN LIMBO
Q: How should I respond when my mother-inlaw continually shows partiality to my husband’s sister and her family? Whenever I call—far in advance—about visiting on various holidays, I’m told that she’s already made plans with her daughter or that she’ll “have to let me know” after finding out what’s going on with her daughter’s family. I deeply resent the inequity, and I’m tired of making plans around my sister-in-law.

Jim: It’s tough to feel like your family comes in “second place” with your in-laws. Unfortunately, it’s possible that in your mother-in-law’s estimation, you will always play second fiddle to her own daughter.
If she acts hurt when you tell her you can’t come, don’t buy into her manipulation. Tell her you’re sorry she’s disappointed and that you’d love to get together another time. It shouldn’t take her long to get the message. If she leaves your family hanging because she’s hoping for a “better offer,” she’ll simply lose out on seeing you.
Nevertheless, it’s important that your husband have a candid conversation with his mother. Simple honesty requires that he let her know how the two of you have been feeling. Meanwhile, you should set some firm boundaries regarding future holiday plans. When discussing dates with his mom, the two of you should say something like this: “Mom, we’d really love to spend Thanksgiving with you this year. We’d like to

FAMILY HAS FORGOTTEN HOW TO TALK TO ONE ANOTHER Q: Communication has become an issue with our family. It seems that none of us spend time talking anymore. I don’t know how this happened, but I’m concerned about how it’s affecting our relationships. What can I do to change the situation? Jim: You’re wise to work toward reversing this trend. Regular and open conversation is essential to healthy family relationships. Deep down we all want to know and be known, and talking is absolutely crucial to this process.
Family conversation is especially important because it promotes and bolsters a sense of family identity. When kids possess a healthy sense of belonging they’re less apt to experiment with risky behaviors and far more likely to develop strong character. So where to begin? I’d suggest that the dinner table is a good place to start. You can encourage reluctant children by giving them your undivided attention, practicing active listening and initiating conversation. Use emotion-based rather than fact-based language. In other words, try to get at the feelings family members are experiencing rather than focusing on the things you’ve been doing. It also helps to have something to talk about—common interests, mutual accomplishments, collective memories, meaningful stories, perhaps even a shared family hobby like biking, hiking or camping. Avoid “yes” or “no” questions as much as possible. Instead, try to come up with personal, open-ended questions. For instance:

WHAT’S YOUR CHILD’S ‘MONEY PERSONALITY’? Q: Our children are both in elementary school, and we want to start teaching them to handle money wisely. Is there anything we should keep in mind? Jim: I’m sure you know whether your children are introverts or extroverts. It’s key to their personality and how they interact with people. Financial experts Scott and Bethany Palmer have identified five basic “money personalities,” and say that children (and adults) each show two, primary and secondary: Saver: Whether it’s cash or collecting rocks, savers hold on to stuff. That can be positive. But you’ll probably have to encourage them to loosen their grip on their piggy bank every once in a while, for something worthwhile. Spender: It might be a cheap pack of gum or an expensive video game— they like to buy, and they crave instant gratification. Teach them to balance saving and spending, but understand they’ll still probably make some bad money choices. Security Seeker: They plan for the future, save money for a rainy day and refuse to touch a penny until that day comes. Applaud their careful planning, while helping them learn to feel comfortable using their money for other things when appropriate. Risk Taker: They aren’t emotionally attached to their stuff, so they won’t hesitate to jump at opportunities that come along. with Jim Daly my heart goes out to you. I believe your marriage is worth fighting for, for a lot of reasons. If you’re a parent, one of your most important considerations ought to be the welfare of your kids. Some people say children are relieved when their parents divorce, if it means they’ll just stop arguing. But that’s really not true. In fact, studies show that divorce is one of the biggest fears kids have. Twenty-five years later, children whose parents divorced still remember the loneliness and fear their parents’ breakup caused them. Research also shows that divorced couples aren’t significantly happier once their marriage ends, and most wish they had worked harder to save their marriage. But what happens if you put in the work to repair and strengthen your marriage? Again, the research shows that in most cases each spouse experiences greater physical, mental and emotional health, and their relationship is stronger and happier. So here’s the takeaway: You don’t have to choose between staying in an unhappy marriage or divorcing and being just as miserable. Your marriage can be healed and restored if both of you are willing to try. Sure, it’ll take work, but it is possible to develop the happiness and intimacy you and your spouse have been looking for all along. Q: How can we stop our 4-year-old from stealing? I have a feeling he’s just being irresponsible—that he puts things in his pocket and forgets about them. We’ve talked to him about why this behavior is wrong, but he keeps doing it. Danny Huerta, Executive Director, Parenting: It’s important to tell your son that stealing is wrong. But it’s also crucial to remember that 4-year-olds tend to respond more to actions than words. If you don’t back up your reproofs with consequences, children are unlikely to change their behavior. In your son’s case, he needs to know what it feels like when someone takes something from him that he values. Let him know that the next time he takes an item you will be taking something away from him. If it happens again, go into his room while he’s occupied elsewhere and remove one of his favorite toys. When he discovers it’s missing, tell him you took it and that he won’t get it back for a day. Each time the behavior recurs, extend the penalty by an additional day.

Death, Disney and Dion by Adam Holz, pluggedin.com
It’s a grim truism that it doesn’t pay to be a parent in an animated Disney movie. I mean, two words: Bambi’s mom. Right? And that poor deer is just (perhaps) the most well-known character on a long, long list of parents who don’t make it out alive (or are never around in the first place) in animated Disney (and, later, Pixar) flicks. Snow White, Cinderella, Anna, Elsa? Orphans, one and all. One parent or both either die or is already dead in a long litany of other Disney films, including Finding Nemo, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid and The Fox and the Hound, among others. Now, as many parents before me have had to do, introducing these stories to our children can be a ticklish business, enough to make us wonder in exasperation, Why do they always have to off Mom and Dad in Disney movies? I’m not going to try to answer that question—an inquiry that many others have unpacked before me—in this blog post. Instead, I’m actually going to flip this question on its metaphorical head and talk about how these sad, sad stories can also have redemptive power… perhaps even opening the door to help us begin to work through loss and pain ourselves.
Céline Dion talked about exactly that subject earlier this year. In January, the singer lost her husband of 21 years, René Angélil, to throat cancer. She’s talked openly since then about how she’s grieving the death of the man she’s repeatedly called “the love of her life.” Along the way, she’s also talked about how she’s used one of those poignant Disney deaths to help her own children, 15-year-old René-Charles and five-yearold twins Nelson and Eddy, deal with their father’s passing . In May, she told ABC News’ Deborah Roberts that Pixar’s movie Up—which begins with the death of elderly Carl Fredricksen’s beloved wife, Ellie—has given them a way to remember the man who meant so much to them. “Every night, we kiss him good night,” she said. “Eddy starts. Two fingers, one finger. And he said, ‘I love you Papa, so much. Happy Easter. Happy Halloween. Happy Christmas. Happy ‘up,’ Papa. I love you so much. I miss you.’ … [Then] Nelson goes, and he repeats almost the same thing, but he adds more stuff. And then I do the thing, too, and I [say], ‘Good night, my love.’” In September, Dion elaborated a bit more to Yahoo News on how Up has helped her youngest boys process their grief. “I asked

for some books for children to help me to how to guide them through this. Especially the twins, of course. And it kind of, like, shook me up so much. It was not my way of wanting to talk to my children,” she said. But Up lit a way forward for her when those other resources came up short. “Up saved my life. I said, ‘What is the movie that Ellie died in?’ And they said, ‘Ellie died in the movie Up, Mom.’ I said, ‘That’s it. Ellie,’ I said. ‘Well, I want you to know listen to me.’ I said, ‘Papa is now with Ellie.’” I’m not going to delve too deeply into Dion’s theology here, other than to note that she’s at least teaching her children about the concept of heaven. What’s interesting to me is that a fictional death in a film her children were familiar with gave this singer a bridge to help them think about the hard reality of losing someone—a reality that’s a very difficult thing for a little tyke to understand. We often talk about the power of story at Plugged In. A fair bit of the time, we unpack stories and content that have the potential to influence viewers in negative ways. The opposite, though, can also be profoundly true. Movies can help us to tap

To this day, there are movies I can’t watch without having tears well up. At the end of Dances With Wolves, the character Wind in His Hair tells Kevin Costner’s character, Lt. Dunbar, “Dances With Wolves! … Do you see that I am your friend? I am your friend! Can you see that I will always be your friend?” It just kills me. Waterworks city, every time. There are others, too, but I’ll stop there. Dion’s story is indeed a deeply sad one. There is simply no easy way around the agony of a loved one’s death. That said, her appropriation of the movie Up is a powerful reminder of the power of the stories we encounter onscreen. And sometimes even the parts of the stories that we’d rather skip become the most important parts of all for those who’ve experienced similar losses.

that there are over 114,000 children and youth throughout the United States in foster care who are currently waiting for adoptive families. November is National Adoption Month, a month set aside each year to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care. 1. Plan to get past obstacles before they happen. If you’re skipping exercise because of family responsibilities, plan a family walk or outing and get everyone involved. 2. Try working out in the morning. You’ll have more energy throughout the day and won’t make the excuse to skip it because you’re tired or have to work late. 3. Workout with a friend. When a friend is waiting for you, you’re less likely to back out! 4. Make a list of goals and put them on the refrigerator. When you think about skipping your workout, go back and read your list.
