GBHS got a goal from Harold Hill with 35 seconds left in the sixth overtime to post an 8-7 win Friday in Tallahassee. Coupled with their 4-1, seasonopening win over Catholic, Gulf Breeze sits alone atop District 1 with a 2-0 record. The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin lacrosse team gave up an early goal, but responded with 11 unanswered as they went on to beat Gainesville Eastside 12-2 Saturday in Gulf Breeze’s seasonopener at Dolphin Stadium. Eastside scored less than two minutes into the match, but their lead lasted less than a minute before Huntir Cramer scored the first of her three goals. The score stayed 1-1 for more almost eight minutes (a Cramer shot hit the post at the 15 minute mark), before Michaela Pattison scored off a Megan Pewitt pass with 14:57 left in the half. Less than two minutes later, Cramer scored again before Bailey Anderson scored the first of her three about 30 seconds later. Frances Williams goals followed with the first of her two before Anderson scored again off a pass from Pattison that made it 6-1 at the half. Cramer completed her hat trick with 17:39 left in the game. Williams scored off a Hannah Miller pass with 15:19 left before Reilly Thompson added a goal 11 seconds later. Freshman Avery Curington then added a pair of goal with 9:21 and 8:49 left in the game. Adriana Fuentealba set up Curington’s first one. Eastside scored with 8:13 left in the match before Anderson completed her hat trick with a goal with 3:54 left. Alanna Zambetti had three saves for Gulf Breeze, who host Gainesville Buchholz Friday. Dolphin offense off to sluggish start Scores two runs in first two games BY JASON THOMPSON

Gulf Breeze News jason@gulfbreezenews.com

A young Dolphin pitching squad recorded nearly double-digit strikeouts in their season opener. Problem was, Navarre’s Matt Cronin had a lot more. The Arkansas-bound Cronin struck out 18 as Navarre edged Gulf Breeze 3-0 in the season opener for both teams Feb. 10. Cronin struck out eight of the first nine GBHS batters as Auston Lewter flew out to right field. Parker Baynes and Brandon Schrepf both reached on errors, while Cole Nitterauer and Jacob Kubik walked for the Dolphins’ lone baserunners. Jack Martin pitched the first four innings, while Austin Wines pitched the fifth and sixth and Stephen Huggins the seventh. Pace 8, Dolphins 2: The Patriots scored five in the top of the second, two more in the third and another in the fourth to win in Gulf Breeze Thursday.

An error, a walk, a double and another walk made it 8-0 in the fourth before the Dolphins foiled the shutout bid with two in the bottom of the seventh. Gant Player, who went 2-for-3, singled before Adam Colston drew a walk. After Baynes was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kubik singled to score Player, Nemith then doubled to score Colston. Reddon McLaurine struck out four for the Dolphins. Dolphin JV 7, Navarre 7: The GBHS and Navarre JVs played to a tie Feb. 10. Josh Smith hit a two-run triple to tie the game. NEVER ARGUE WITH SUCCESS

This deal occurred in a four-table team-of-four match. At Tables 1 and 2, the bidding went as shown, and South wound up in five hearts doubled. Had West led a club, or led diamonds and switched to a club, declarer would have gone down two — 300 points. But both Wests led a spade, their partner’s suit, and collected only 100 points. At Table 3, where the bidding start-

ed the same way, West bid five spades over five hearts, showing full faith and confidence in his partner’s vulnerable four-spade bid. North doubled, won his partner’s king-of-hearts lead with the ace, but later scored only his ace of trumps. So at this table, East made five spades doubled, worth 850 points. At Table 4, there was even more dramatic action. Here, when the bidding went 1 [C]-4 [S]-5 [H], West leaped to six spades over five hearts! What’s more, his judgment proved correct when East made the slam. South had a difficult choice of opening leads and decided on a club, the suit his partner had bid, rather than a heart. This unfortunate choice cost him 1,860 points. The deal illustrates how different players facing the same circumstances often react in different ways. All four Wests had to contend with a five-heart bid by South. The first two Wests doubled — incorrectly, in our opinion. The third West raised to five spades with only a singleton trump, while the fourth West went on to six. Who was right, you ask? Obviously, the West at Table 4. GULF BREEZE NEWS

And the winner is... In a few days the 87th annual film awards, affectionately known as “The Oscars” will be televised for the world to see. This year, Doogie Howser will follow in the footsteps of Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, Bob Hope, and Johnny Carson as the host. Fashionistas will criticize various dresses while gawkers will gossip about weight gain, plastic surgery, and relationship statuses. "Birdman," "American Sniper" and "Boyhood" are already making the list as frontrunners for the awards. Each day social media outlets are highlighting favorites and making speculations. It’s going to be fun to watch. It always is. While the Oscars are awarded to the “Best” in various categories, I’m just as fascinated by time’s valuation of some of the non-winners and even non-nominated. Cary Grant never won. Neither did Alfred Hitchcock or Harrison Ford. Brad Pitt has never won for his acting. Neither has Tom Cruise, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Will Smith, Ed Norton, Samuel Jackson, or Johnny Depp! Its hard to believe that “The Wizard of Oz”, “Shawshank Redemption,” “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “The Color Purple”, and my favorite, “The Princess Bride” never won a best picture. In the Oscar world, the voting is an annual event with no foresight about future appreciation. It’s a tough business. In life, the difference between winners and losers is often only recognized in the short run. Certainly Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt have left their mark on acting in my lifetime whether they ever win an Oscar or not. Hitchcock impacted the future of the movies with his use of imagination and plot twists regardless of an Oscar win. History has taught us what makes great movies even if the Academy Awards left them out in the cold. Likewise, history will tell our stories of success regardless of whether we ever get a trophy, promotion, or recognition. There are other indicators of success than winning an award. If I could make my own list for awards the categories might look like this: Best Friend, Most Sacrificial, Best Listener, Best Giver, Best Surprise Ending, Most Peace Making, Best Use of Power to Help Others, Most Encouraging, Most Challenging, Most Transformed, Best 2nd Chair, Best Motivator, Best Servant Leader, Most Original, Most Underappreciated, Most Honest and Most Fun. Names like Sandra Kale, Herb Sadler, Bo Parker, Jeffrey Smith, Gorman Houston, Lamar Helms, Ed Rushing, Paul Mayne, Mike Bodine, Tony Hughes, David Schutz, Bobby Dailey, Scott Veroneau, Paul Ovnic, Kurt Overlade, Chris Collins, Larry Fox, and Clark Allen would make my list for sure. My life is full of folks who make my life better and most likely they will never win an award for doing so. Who are the winners in your life? Basically, we all have the power to make a difference in this world even if we never get any recognition. Use the red carpet of your life to build up and encourage others. Take time to listen to what others are not saying. Read between the lines. Look for opportunities to get involved in making the world a better place. Use your words to create love and peace in the middle of this war torn world. Be willing to make sacrifices for your family and country. Stand beside a friend who feels beaten down by the judgments of the world. With the exception of a few crazies out there, I am convinced that most of us are trying our best even if we never win the Oscar. Continue Paul’s challenge in I Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (NIV). This Sunday night as you watch the Oscars, consider those in your life worthy of your praise and admiration. Take time to give them your own little “Oscar” to let them know how they have made a difference in your life. When you nominate them, you may just find that you might already be on the stage to win your award for a life well lived. Love one. Love another.

The ribbon cutting for the new Pensacola Beach Visitor’s Center was held last week with an Open House hosting a few hundred people getting a view of the new building, which is twice the size of the old center. Executive Director Buck Lee and his assistant Robbie Schrock, along with the Santa Rosa island Authority Board members and staff and the VIC staff, cut the ribbon to officially open the center Wednesday, Feb. 11.

SRIA rejects $1.7M ferry landing plan ert Rinke does not want a small kiosk and shelter like the Parks service was talking about. He wants something nicer. SRIA chair Tammy Bohannon expressed her disapproval of the additional $1.7 million for the Rinke proposal. “I know grants are not always easy to come by, and I am sure adding another $1.7 million to already over $2 million does not help getting approval,” Bohannon said. “And I have never been in favor of tax payer monies going to improve private business property. Why can’t we move the kiosk site off Mr. Rinke’s property? I don't think this is right at all.” Board member Thomas Campanella agreed. “We don't need Rinke, right? We can put the kiosk behind the shell and off his property? I agree with Mrs. Bohannon.
