The Golden Gate Bridge (Highway 101 North) links San Francisco with Marin County. Before its completion in 1937, the bridge was considered unbuildable because of foggy weather, 60-mile-perhour winds and strong ocean currents sweeping through a deep rugged canyon below. At a cost of $35 million, the 1.2-mile bridge took more than four years to build. Eleven men lost their lives during construction. Often shrouded in thick fog, the bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. The color of the bridge, known as “International Orange”, was chosen because it blends well with the bridge’s natural surroundings and provides enhanced visibility to passing ships. It’s a popular misconception that the bridge is painted “endto-end” each year. In 1965, due to advancing corrosion, a program to remove the original lead-based paint from the bridge began. The bridge requires routine maintenance on an ongoing basis by a staff of 28 painters and 13 ironworkers. US-manufactured steel was used to build the bridge and shipped through the Panama Canal to San Francisco. The two great cables contain enough strands of steel wire (80,000 miles) to encircle the equator three times. The concrete poured into its piers and anchorages would pave a five-foot wide sidewalk from New York to San Francisco. Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed across the bridge on pathways with sweeping views of the City, Alcatraz and the Marin Headlands. The bridge toll for vehicles is collected electronically at the toll plaza when entering San Francisco (no cash payment). Electronic options include FasTrack® and pay-by-plate (toll invoice). A toll invoice is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Vantage points from the San Francisco side include the Toll Plaza and Visitors Center (before crossing the bridge), and at Fort Point (under the bridge). The first exit on the Marin side of the bridge, Vista Point, provides outstanding views of the San Francisco skyline. The best way to see the bridge is to walk across it which takes about an hour round trip. When walking the bridge dress warmly whatever time of year. Free parking is available on the north side at Vista Point, paid parking is available on the south side at the Visitor Center near the toll booths. A postcard-perfect panorama of the skyline can also be seen from the Marin Headlands (the last exit in Marin County).

r F LINE Riding a Muni F-line vintage streetcar is a fun way for visitors to view the San Francisco Bay, Coit Tower and famous Fisherman’s Wharf. The fleet of restored streetcars includes international and domestic trolleys from the 1920s and ’30s, San Francisco’s first street car (1912) and “The Street Car Named Desire” acquired from New Orleans in exchange for a California Street cable car. The popular F-line runs a total of five miles beginning at its western terminal in the Castro district, down Market Street to the Embarcadero and ending at Jones and Beach streets in Fisherman’s Wharf.

r C ABLE C ARS The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Wire-cable manufacturer Andrew Hallidie conceived the idea after witnessing an accident in which a horse-drawn carriage faltered and rolled backward downhill dragging the horses behind it. The first cable car to descend down Clay Street on Nob Hill was an immediate success. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco’s public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible. Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the primary mode of transportation until the 1906 earthquake and the fires that destroyed most of the cable car system. As the City rebuilt, few lines were restored; a municipal railway replaced most lines. San Francisco’s beloved cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.

Alcatraz Island has served as a harbor fortification, military detention facility and maximum-security federal penitentiary. The West Coast’s first and oldest operating lighthouse is also located on the island. Today Alcatraz is one of San Francisco’s top tour attractions; over one million people visit Alcatraz each year. Most curiosity surrounding Alcatraz focuses on the period when the island served as the infamous maximum-security prison for notorious Mafia criminals and high-risk convicts. In 1934 control of Alcatraz shifted from the US military to the Department of Justice who found itself ill equipped to deal with the violent crime surge that followed the Great Depression. Citizens lived in fear as mobsters and thugs ruled the streets in many metropolitan cities. Alcatraz proved the perfect solution for incarcerating the country’s most violent of criminals. A foremost security expert was commissioned to design a 600-cell escapeproof prison where a ratio of one guard to every three prisoners was maintained. The first prisoners on Alcatraz were handpicked from other penitentiaries and were among the nation’s most unmanageable convicts. Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert “Birdman” Stroud were among the first group of inmates to arrive. Crimes committed by the hardened criminals who resided on the island ranged from bank robbery to rape to murder. Upon arrival at Alcatraz new prisoners were assigned to a private cell and provided with only life’s most basic necessities: clothing, food, water and medical care; anything above and beyond this was considered a privilege. Inmates were required to observe a strict silence policy, only being allowed to talk during meals and recreation. Historically, many prison riots had been started because of the poor quality of prison food so Warden James Johnston vowed that the Alcatraz cafeteria would be the best in the prison system. Prisoners of Alcatraz dined on a menu of salads, fresh fruit, diverse entrees and even desserts. Although the island is only 1.25 miles from shore, there is no evidence of any successful escapes across the icy Bay. The prison was the only one in the federal system that touted hot showers—a luxury designed to keep prisoners from acclimating to the cold water. There were 14 attempts to escape Alcatraz during its 29-year tenure as a federal penitentiary. Most attempts ended with escapees being recaptured or killed. Frank Lee Morris and Clarence and John Anglin made the most famous escape attempt in 1962. The movie, Escape from Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood,

was based on their elaborate plot. Using homemade tools to break out of their cells, the inmates made their way off the island using rafts and inflatable life vests made from prison issued raincoats. Many still speculate whether or not the inmates survived the cold and rough waters to reach land and the US Marshals continue to hunt for the escapees. In 1963 the decision to close Alcatraz was made by US Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Alcatraz desperately needed repair from extensive salt-water and air corrosion at a time when budgets were being cut. At three times the operating expenses of other penitentiaries, Alcatraz was simply too costly to keep open. The isolation (and hence lack of natural resources) that had made the island such an attractive site for a maximum-security prison ultimately sealed its fate. “The Rock” is now a popular tourist attraction. The 12-acre island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is accessible only by Alcatraz Cruises boats which depart daily from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf on the Embarcadero. To avoid disappointment, purchase Alcatraz tickets well in advance. In summer months and on holiday weekends, Alcatraz sells out as early as 3-4 weeks in advance. On days when the Alcatraz tour is sold out, consider a bay cruise which passes close to the island for photos. Be aware that to reach the cellhouse visitors must walk up a steep hill. The distance from the dock to the cellhouse is approximately 1/4 mile and equivalent to a 13-story climb. Visitors unable to make this climb may take advantage of an hourly electric shuttle. Breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate can be captured from the beautifully landscaped Agave Trail. The trail (open from late September to mid-February) begins near the ferryboat landing on the east side of the island, winds through a protected bird sanctuary to a stairway where prison guards’ houses once stood and down to the water’s edge. Atop Telegraph Hill is the 210-foot Coit Tower, built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. Due to Coit’s admiration for the fire fighters who fought the 1906 earthquake fires, many believe the tower was designed in the shape of a fire hose nozzle. Located in the Russian Hill district, Lombard Street is known as “the crookedest street in the world” because of its eight sharp turns on a 40-degree slope. The turns, known as switchbacks, were built in the 1920s to allow traffic to descend the steep incline. The street zigzags around beautiful flowers and shrubs and offers a nice view of the bay. There are stairways (without curves) on either side of the street for pedestrians. Descent for the one-block brick paved section of Lombard Street begins at Hyde Street and ends at Leavenworth. Distinguished by their design features, the three styles of Victorians include the Italianate, the Stick and the Queen Anne. Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights at 261 Columbus Avenue, the first paperback bookstore in the country and Allen Ginsberg’s publisher, was at the movement’s center. Facing City Lights on Jack Kerouac Place is Vesuvio, a saloon worth a visit for its Beat Generation memorabilia. It’s the restaurants, however, that draw the crowds to North Beach, and you won’t be disappointed with any selection that you make. Traditional cafes, Italian delicatessens selling homemade ravioli, and bakeries offering tempting pastries line Columbus Avenue. At the heart of North Beach is Washington Square, a grassy piazza where the Church of Saints Peter & Paul is located.

In 1881 the Cliff House was a posh playground for San Francisco’s elite, former presidents and writers such as Mark Twain. The current Cliff House overlooks Ocean Beach and Seal Rocks. North of the Cliff House are the remains of the Sutro Baths, once the world’s largest swimming pool. Seven indoor pools were housed here until the structure burned in 1960.

The Castro, an international symbol of gay pride, has one of the City’s richest histories. Populated by dairy farms on the slopes of Twin Peaks in the 1880s, the Castro district today is a thriving neighborhood of restored Victorian homes, bars, shops and restaurants. Community activism, born in the ‘60s and ‘70s under gay-rights leaders such as Harvey Milk, remains strong. Milk’s former campaign headquarters is located at 575 Castro. The most recognizable attraction in the neighborhood is the Castro Theatre, a movie palace built in 1922.

r M U I R W O O D S & S AU S A L I TO Muir Woods is located 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named after naturalist John Muir who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is made up of over 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coast redwoods – up to 252 feet tall and 14 feet across. The park is home to 50 species of birds, deer, fish and hundreds of other “wild inhabitants.” U.S. Congressman William Kent and his wife Elizabeth had purchased the land to preserve its beauty and restful wilderness, and in 1908 they donated it to the federal government to protect it from development. President Theodore Roosevelt declared Muir Woods the 10th national monument on January 9, 1908. Visitors are invited to explore the paved main trail which offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees– some known to be 1,000 years old. There are six miles of walking trails and no cars are allowed in the redwood grove. Cool, shaded and moist year round, the park opens at 8am 365 days a year, though closing time varies seasonally. The park is. Daytime temperatures at Muir Woods average between 40 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Be prepared for rain if visiting the park from October to May. Eight miles north of San Francisco across the bay is the tiny bayside community of Sausalito. Arrival or departure by ferry is the best way to experience this Mediterranean-style community that is often compared to the French Riviera. Sausalito’s many attractions include Bridgeway Avenue, a quaint shopping district. After a day of touring, return to San Francisco by ferry. The Blue & Gold Fleet departs Sausalito for Pier 41. Literary legend and one-time Bay Area resident, Jack London created one of the most memorable images of the Sonoma Valley from an Indian fable. Muir Woods National Monument is made up of over 560 acres of redwood forest. Many of the spectacular Sequoia sempervirens in this mature growth forest, only 12 miles from downtown San Francisco, are more than 1,000 years old. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coast redwoods – up to 252 feet tall and 14 feet across. Muir Woods attracts 900,000 visitors from around the globe each year. Organized bus tours are available daily from San Francisco. Once inside the park guests are free to explore at their own pace on well-marked walking trails. Visitors are invited to explore the paved main trail path which is one-half mile and easily accessible to all. Educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees and the park’s wildlife are located along the trail. Park rangers offer free ecology tours at intervals throughout the day. More ambitious hikers can follow signs to longer intermediate trails. There are six miles of walking trails and no cars are allowed in the redwood grove. Keep an eye and ear out for possible sightings of Northern spotted owls, jays, bats, black-tailed deer, Coho salmon, butterflies and more wildlife among the animal community inside a sun-dappled canopy created by the towering redwoods. Shaded and moist year round, the park can be cool so be sure to pack a light jacket or sweater. Daytime temperatures at Muir Woods average between 40 and 70 degrees Farenheit. Be prepared for precipitation if visiting the park from October to May. The park opens at 8am 365 days a year, though closing time varies seasonally

Muir Woods

an overarching concern of those who maintain the park for the enjoyment of the general public. Muir Woods National Monument is open from 8am daily, 365 days a year. Closing time varies from 5pm to 8pm, depending upon the season. No reservations are required and entrance fees are paid at the gate. Driving is discouraged, as limited parking areas cannot support the number of daily visitors to Muir Woods. The few parking lots are frequently full shortly after Muir Woods opens. Currently visitors may park along the narrow shoulder of the road but it’s not uncommon to have to walk a mile to the park. Therefore, alternative means of reaching the park are highly recommended. RAVELING ACROSS the Golden Gate Bridge,

only 12 miles north of San Francisco, visitors rise into the Marin hills before descending into a tranquil, awe-inspiring experience: a rare old-growth coastal redwood forest. Operated by the U.S. National Park Service as Muir Woods National Monument, these towering ancient giants are over 1,000 years old, the tallest and most-visited Sequoia sempervirens.

Explore Muir Woods National Monument You can dedicate as little as an hour or as much as a full day to explore Muir Woods. Marvel at the giant redwoods as you meander independently via a flat, one-mile-long boardwalk path leading over little bridges beside a creek which winds through the woods and is stroller and wheelchair accessible. Or, join a shorter free guided tour with a volunteer park ranger to learn more about the majestic trees and their fragile eco-system, continuously nourished by coastal fog. Shards of sunlight pierce groves of towering redwood branches and high canopies providing shade for wildlife including the endangered coho salmon, Pacific wren, bats, woodpeckers, owls, deer, chipmunks, skunks, river otters, squirrels and more. There are amazing hikes for every skill level along an extensive interconnected trail system which winds through lush greenery, right out to the shores of the Pacific Ocean at Muir Beach. A gift shop and café are found just inside the entrance.

Getting to Muir Woods Arrive by coach. Book an hour or more ahead for a free hotel pick-up and drop-off or board the coach at Fisherman’s Wharf. You’ll travel for approximately a half-hour (over the Golden Gate Bridge!) aboard a comfortable, air conditioned bus to the entrance of Muir Woods at the foot of Mount Tamalpais. Many tours include park admission fees. Take the convenient Hop-On Hop-Off Muir Woods Shuttle, which offers the longest stretch of time to enjoy the woods at your leisure. Departures are offered to and from the park several times throughout the day. Combine two Marin County highlights: Muir Woods and picturesque Sausalito, a quaint small town with a Mediterranean appeal and unbeatable San Francisco skyline views. Waterfront restaurants, boutiques and art galleries line Bridgeway, Sausalito’s downtown thoroughfare. Return to the city via the “world’s second best ferry ride,” a spectacular 25-minute boat trip across San Francisco Bay, with great views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. No cell phone service exists at Muir Woods, so if you were planning to book a ride share or taxi, be aware of this limitation. Notes on the Weather Micro-climates are a natural phenomenon within the San Francisco Bay Area. When it’s cold and foggy in the City it’s most likely warm and sunny just 20 minutes north across the Golden Gate Bridge. Even on a warm, sunny day, it’s wise to bring a jacket along. Keep in mind that a redwood forest has a micro-climate of its own as well. Beneath the tree top canopies, it’s cooler, shadier and foggier in Muir Woods – the ancient coastal redwoods have thrived by absorbing moisture from the dense ocean fog. r

Rules of the Road

MAGINE riding a bike across the Golden Gate Bridge and taking a ferry back...it’s one of those great defining moments of a San Francisco trip for those who are up to the physical challenge. Here are a few tips for making your day extra special.

Bike Rentals Bicycle rental companies are found in many locations, including Fisherman’s Wharf for easy access to the Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll be provided with a custom fitting, test ride, helmet, bike lock, a map and ferry schedule. Your bike will usually have a rear rack for strapping down larger items, a front bike bag for smaller items, a front map holder and a bike bell. Don’t forget a jacket or hoodie, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle and an I.D. Go on your own or choose a relaxed pace guided group tour over the Golden Gate or around town – no reservations required for a self-guided experience. Weather Conditions Everything you’ve ever heard about San Francisco’s signature fog is likely to be true. You may not see a trace of it at all, or you may encounter fog that burns off by late morning and perhaps returns in the evening. Even on the nicest days, expect windy weather when you’re approximately 270 feet high on the roadway of the Golden Gate Bridge. Once you cross the 1.7 miles

The bridge’s eastern side faces the City and is the main walkway, open for both pedestrians and bicycles morning to mid-afternoon on weekdays from 5am to 3:30pm, and then to pedestrians only until dusk. On weekends, the eastern walkway is reserved for pedestrians from 5am to 6pm, or until 9pm during Daylight Saving Time. It is open exclusively to bicyclists during evening and overnight. The western ocean-facing walkway is open only for bicyclists during the hours when they’re not allowed on the eastern walkway.

Timing, Convenience and Returns via Ferry Rent bikes by the hour or by the day. Find locations generally open from 8am, some also offer 24-hour drop-off so you can enjoy your day without worrying about return times. For a return by ferry from Sausalito, start your bicycling day early to catch a return ferry quicker. If you depart later, returning ferries will be crowded and lines can be long. Always check the ferry schedule for the last return to San Francisco and plan for an earlier one. A free bicycle reservation system for priority boarding is available online at BikeSausalito.com. Two ferry lines depart Sausalito for both Fisherman’s Wharf (Blue & Gold Fleet - Pier 39 / 41) and the Ferry Building (Golden Gate Transit Pier 1). Once you join the line to board, you may be instructed to take the next ferry for either destination (no need to worry, tickets for the two ferry lines are interchangeable). Blue & Gold Fleet ferries dock at Pier 39/41 while Golden Gate Transit boats will leave passengers at the Ferry Building at Pier 1. Remember to allow enough time to wait for the ferry plus the 25-minute crossing.

FAQ’s Is it free to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge? Yes. Motorists pay an automated toll. Bicyclists and pedestrians pay nothing. What about helmets for cyclists? California State Law requires helmets be worn by riders under the age of 18. Although recommended, helmets aren’t mandatory for adults. The downhill ride off the bridge into Sausalito is fun but be careful to maintain control of your bike. r
