FALL IS HERE F

needs photos. Family, business, lifestyle—you name it, she is amazing at it.

Fall is one of my favorite seasons. It brings a sense of renewal and gives me the chance to slow down from all the busyness of the summer. For me, fall is the time to set goals, nest in my home and finish a few things before the snow falls and stays for months on end.

Kalyn Sloan has been an integral part of the magazine since I took over. I met her at a local business and knew right away we had to work together. Her first interview for us was when I was featured on the cover. I was nervous about my firstever interview, but she made the process a breeze and I felt like I was talking to an old friend. We are so fortunate at Guided Synergy to work with her on every issue. Kalyn is moving to Ontario, back to her family and roots, but we will continue to work with her on each issue through the power of the internet.

all is here, the leaves are crunching and the mornings are getting colder. In this inbetween season, Uggs and flip-flops are both still appropriate, depending on the time of day you leave the house.

This issue is truly special to me. I am honoured to have Shelley Lauzé on the cover. Not only is she an inspiration to me for her story and the obstacles that she has faced to become the woman she is, she is also my mother-in-law, and I feel so lucky for that. I have been married to her oldest son, Justin, for just over two years, but have been part of the Lauzé family for more than 10 years. I have seen Shelley in various stages of her life and profession. I have witnessed first-hand all the effort, training and work she has put into developing her career and herself as a person. She is truly an inspiration.

Honestly, I am always amazed by the calibre of articles our authors provide us. If you are interested in being featured in Guided Synergy Magazine, please reach out to us, as we are always looking to support people who have a message to share. I hope the last three months in this decade are wonderful to you, and we will see you in the new year. Chelsey Boyne, Publisher

ON THE COVER

I always take pleasure in the process of creating each issue, but this one has been my favourite so far (although I think I say this every time). I feel I should take some time to introduce those who play a role in the magazine, usually behind the scenes. We have created a beautiful partnership with Leanne Krol from Polite Society Clothing Co. to dress our cover features, which also allows the store to show off its new products. Working with Liza Curtiss Photography on the majority of the covers has been such a treat. I love watching the subject of the cover feature bloom as the photo process unfolds. I have worked on so many projects with Liza, and I highly recommend her to anyone who

Susan Fitzgerald has been with the magazine for nine years and works out of Vancouver. She is a major contributor behind the scenes. If you have ever written an article for us, she is the one who has communicated with you about your piece. She knows the style of the magazine through and through and understands our voice and vision. I am so thankful for her and the energy and love she puts into the magazine issue after issue.

HEALTH

MYTH: MEMORY LOSS IS UNAVOIDABLE Exercise your brain H

ow many times have you heard someone say, “I’m losing my memory” or “Memory loss is just part of getting older”? What if I told you this is a myth for most people? As an occupational therapist, I often tell people that the brain, just like many other parts of the body, requires regular exercise to stay healthy. The brain is an amazing computer system made up of many parts that together run your body. Put simply, the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body, and the right side of your brain directs the left side of your body. The left brain is the logical side that analyzes things, puts them in sequence, deals with language and mathematics, is factual, thinks in words and remembers words of songs. The right brain supports creativity and artistic motor skills, brings out imagination and likes to daydream, sees the world in a holistic manner, taps into intuition, is nonverbal and loves music in songs. As you can see, the left and right sides of your brain govern opposite functions in your body. I won’t discuss the complexities of the lobes here. We’ll just stick to the left- and right-side functions for this article. Are you concerned about what might be happening in your brain? Let’s break it down into symptoms of weakness for each side. Left-brain weakness and right side of the body: • Struggling with reading and fine motor activities like writing • Trouble with spelling and recognizing letters • Challenges with verbal communication or difficulty understanding verbal instructions • Poor recall of details and facts, big or small • Avoiding language or mathematical tasks • Poor immune system, self-esteem and motivation Right-brain weakness and left side of the body: • Signs of hyperactivity • Poor gross motor skills (big movements) that result in awkward movements and clumsiness • Struggles with focusing and attention • Difficulty controlling emotions; engaging in compulsive behaviours and at times destructive actions • Poor nonverbal communication and behaviours that may result in social inappropriateness • Lack of interest in sports or physical activity

6 www.guidedsynergy.ca

• Inability to view or understand the bigger picture • Signs of anxiety, which may include poor eye contact You might be saying, “Oh no! I have some of these” or “I know someone who does that,” but please don’t be too alarmed. Remember that your brain can be exercised. Even better, your brain has a superpower called plasticity. Plasticity means the brain can repair itself to a certain point by creating new pathways. We see this especially in people who have had a stroke or brain injury. Initially, they may not be able to talk or move certain body parts, but with rehabilitation they are able to gain function back. Are you ready to exercise your brain, to work with parts of your body so you can improve your memory and cognitive functions? For things to stick in your short- and long-term memory, your brain requires you to use your five senses (touch, smell, hearing, taste and vision) plus other techniques. Exercising the left and right sides of your brain, along with the left and right sides of your body, can help you retain items in your memory bank. There are many mind-exercise techniques that you can research. Here are four simple activities to get you started: 1. Use your nondominant hand to do everyday activities such as eating, drinking and brushing your teeth. 2. Look around the room and then close your eyes. Recall as many details related to your five senses as you can. 3. Try activities that encourage you to use both the left and right sides of your body, like dancing, yoga and tai chi. 4. Move your body parts in different and challenging ways, especially using both sides of your body at once. For example, swing your left arm forward and tap your right foot out to the side. Try rubbing your belly in circles with one hand and tapping your head with the other! Just like any physical exercise, these activities may not be easy at the start. You are building up your mind so that both sides of your brain can improve your daily living. Have some fun with these activities and others, and give them a try with family, friends and coworkers. Healthy minds make for a better community.

FOOD & NUTRITION

THE POTENTIAL OF EPIGENETICS H

Learn about your body’s unique needs

ave you ever wondered if there is such thing as the perfect human diet? Or even a perfect diet for you? I know I have, both for myself and for my clients. Over the years, I’ve tried everything that has come down the pipe, from vegetarian to paleo and keto. And as a coach, I have often wondered if there wasn’t an easier way than trial and error to find the perfect plan for my clients. The notion of a perfect diet is actually becoming a reality. Now that we have a human blueprint for each individual’s DNA, it is possible to find a person’s perfect nutrition plan, sleep routine and supplement regimen. We are all unique. There is no single uniform genetic code saying that what works for one human will work for another. This is because of epigenetics, the environmental and lifestyle components that contribute to the activity of our genes. Essentially, epigenetics studies how biological traits are affected by lifestyle factors. Epigenetic factors are literally all around us: the food we eat, where we live, the people we spend time with, how much sleep we get, what type of exercise we do and so on. Over time, these factors can cause chemical modifications that turn certain genes on or off. The combination of which genes are on and off is different for all of us, making us unique. So we can alter the expression of our genes through nutrition, lifestyle choices, exercise and other behaviours. The first step is knowing our genetic code. The second step is learning how that genetic code interacts with the environment. This enables us to create a plan that optimizes our health based on our unique genetic blueprint and our knowledge of how food, exercise and lifestyle affects that. For example, we can increase some

genes’ response by adding things like vitamin D and olive oil, and we can decrease the response of genes that cause inflammation, which eventually leads to disease, by limiting the foods that turn on those genes, such as processed foods and sugar. When it comes to nutrition, epigenetics can help us understand our drive to eat sweets and snacks. For example, I have two genetic variants related to this. One is a decreased ability to taste sweet flavours, which means I have to eat more of a sweet food to actually taste it. The other turns off my inhibitions once I start eating sweets, so the signal to my brain to stop eating the sugar is blunted and I tend to overeat. Through epigenetics, you can learn if you are genetically more likely to lose abdominal fat with higher-complex carbs or if your body needs higher or lower levels of protein. There are genetic variants that tell us how much fat to consume and which type of fat (saturated, polyunsaturated or monounsaturated) is best. Based on my genetics, I’ve learned why I never felt great when I attempted a keto diet and cut out carbs, and why, unlike many other people, I gained abdominal fat on this diet instead of losing it. You can unlock the limitless possibility encoded in your DNA. The perfect diet for you, as well as the perfect program of exercise, sleep and supplementation, is located in your human blueprint. FEATURE STORY

COMPASSIONATE RESPONSIBILITY Guidance towards greater things in life INTERVIEW AND STORY BY KALYN SLOAN PHOTOS BY LIZA CURTISS PHOTOGRAPHY CLOTHING BY POLITE SOCIETY CLOTHING CO.

S

helley Lauzé loves the mantra ad maiora in vıta, which translates as “towards greater things in life.” It represents a commitment to self that assists her in personal growth and self-accountability. These greater things are personal qualities that she makes a conscious effort to work towards every day. They include compassion, love, honour and integrity of self. Shelley is a passionate and determined advocate for mental health, and she believes healing is a continuous journey towards deeper self-knowing and self-acceptance. As the sole proprietor of Seeds of Change Therapeutic and Developmental Consultation Services, she offers traumainformed resources, counselling, consulting and therapy from a developmental framework in developmental psychology, complex trauma, addiction and sexual health and wellness. Through her guidance, Shelley encourages us to practice our own greater things. Shelley was born in Alberta and has lived in various locations throughout the province. For part of her childhood, she, her parents and her brothers lived on a small hobby farm. “I’ve always had a connection with animals,” she shares. “It’s their unconditional acceptance that draws me in.” She fondly recalls Comet, a fast, stubborn mare with a spunky attitude. “We had a tumultuous relationship at times and were equally tenacious, I guess,” Shelley remembers. “She’d buck me off in her unwillingness to be ridden, and I’d jump back on, unwilling to back down.” Shelley’s mother once commented that the two were quite alike, and although Shelley prefers the word determined over stubborn, she agrees. She sees her young self as a determined child who was friends with an equally determined horse. Shelley experienced social anxiety in her youth. “We moved around a lot and I was often the new kid in class,” she explains, “so social experiences weren’t always positive or easy in close-knit communities.” Her social circles were small and intimate, and although some of her scholastic experiences weren’t positive, she says that her greatest influencers were educators. When Shelley became a mom in grade 12, just weeks shy of completing high school, she thought her dreams of pursuing a post-secondary education would need to be set aside. She was enamoured with motherhood, and the thought of anything else just didn’t make sense. At the time, teenage pregnancy was seen as a limitation, but with encouragement from her mentors, the late John O’Mahony and Liliane Béland, Shelley began to view her circumstances quite differently.

Once she had enrolled in college, Shelley and her son moved away so she could pursue her post-secondary goals. Along the way, her mentors checked in on them, periodically sending cards and notes of encouragement. As Shelley tells it, “This effort was hugely impactful in my heart and on my path. It was their kindness and compassion that was so meaningful, and I want to live that way, too, in their honour.” Today, Shelley lives in Falher with her best friend and life partner, Rob. They have three beautiful adult children: Justin, Dalyn and Lauren. Their oldest son was actively co-parented with his father, Marc, and Marc’s partner, Lise, who are also wonderfully supportive friends to Shelley and Rob. Shelley is dedicated to lifelong learning. She studied multiple disciplines in health and education before earning her master’s degree in psychology. Over the last 25 years, she has continued to attain many designations that support her clientele. In addition, she is actively pursuing a PhD in her current specialization. Shelley’s guidance is available online and in-person throughout northern Alberta, including Grande Prairie, Peace River and the Smoky River region, and she plans to offer web-based programming, training and guidance to support remote communities. Shelley’s passion for mental health was in part inspired by one of her brothers, whom she lost to mental illness. “I noticed a discord in empathy,” she recalls. “The stigma around mental health was still so prevalent that I felt like I needed to do something.” With focused intention, Shelley began pursuing her education in trauma therapy. In her practice, Shelley prefers her clients to think of her as a guide as they work through trauma together. She helps clients to recognize how they feel in their bodies and gives them tools to support themselves in making these connections. Shelley offers an empathic understanding that surviving trauma is incredible. “Survival means we are already a resource to ourselves in our healing,” she says. Shelley’s practice also focuses on self-care. To guide clients towards well-being, she uses specific components of self-care that encompass a variety of needs: social, physical, intellectual, cognitive and creative, emotional, rest and sleep hygiene and spiritual or soul needs. She is also open to conventional medication and to using community resources outside of ourselves. Shelley believes that “there are many tools we can use to impact, influence and inform ourselves towards being greater versions of ourselves.” As a mental health advocate, Shelley knows there is a need for societal responsibility, beginning with the individual. Fall 2019 l GUIDED SYNERGY 15

We can do this by shifting our internal dialogue and how we communicate and connect with others. When we respond to our mistakes without judgment and commit to changing the way we respond, we cultivate a compassionate and caring relationship with self. We can start by becoming aware of the words we use and choosing to respond with kindness. Shelley suggests using a script like this: “I love and honour myself regardless of the mistakes I’ve made, and even because of the errors I’ve made. I know where I was at that time of the mistake, and that’s okay.” Practicing this dialogue nurtures self-compassion. “When we extend compassion to ourselves, we radiate compassion towards others,” she says. Compassion towards others helps shift how we communicate with each other. For example, Shelley points out the stigma in the ways we communicate about mental illness and suicide. It’s common to say “committed suicide,” but commit fuels stigmatization because it means the individual holds all of the responsibility. We know this is untrue. Commit also places blame on the person who experienced suicide, and in that blame, we get to disconnect from mental illness, as though suicide is not our social responsibility. “Suicide is like a cancer of thought,” Shelley explains. “We don’t tell someone with cancer that they’ve ‘committed cancer.’ Naturally, we offer compassion, we’re empathic and want to reach out in the ways we can.” When we choose to communicate by saying a person “died of mental illness” or “died by suicide,” we lose the stigmatization. Without stigma, we can open to individual and collective responsibility by compassionately asking, “How can I help?” Finally, when we shift our dialogue and our communication, we help change our connections with others. In our Western culture, adulthood means people are supposed to be completely autonomous and self-sufficient, yet we’re a species hardwired for connection. “Although I’m a proponent of taking responsibility for our actions and responses in society, I also believe that kindness and compassion foster change,” Shelley explains. “We need to lift each other up, to encourage each other.” It’s important to reach out with compassion and without judgment when we’re genuinely concerned about a person’s well-being. Supporting someone means asking that person how they are doing, keeping that in mind, and then following up later. When taking responsibility for how we connect with others, Shelley says, “it’s not necessarily the length of the connection that matters, but the meaningful dialogue behind it.” When it comes to mental health, Shelley believes we get to decide how our internal dialogue affects us and how it affects our communications and connections with others. We can choose to move towards our greater things in life, she says, by asking ourselves, “‘Am I a conduit towards creating a kinder and more empathic society?’ or ‘Am I repeating old patterns and feeding into the negativity of what’s going on?’” In life and in healing, our words matter; choose yours with integrity. TRAVEL

THE WONDERS OF BEIJING Lessons in the art of travel

L

anding in Asia after 11 hours on a plane and realizing that it is 14 hours into the future is a bit mind-boggling. We jumped ahead eight hours on our Sweden trip a year and a half ago, but that didn’t come with all the precursors this excursion has: selling our home and taking a leave from school and work to travel around the world as a family. The emotions that set in once we had boarded the plane had now subsided and turned into exhaustion. We had chosen one of the most mysterious cities and countries in the world to visit for our initial taste of extended world travel, and let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint! Our list of sites to visit, including Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, the Forbidden City and, of course, the Great Wall, made it a lot easier to get past the rock-hard beds, loud city streets and crazy-but-true sound and sight of people frequently spitting on the sidewalks. As a world traveller, you must quickly get over the fact that not everything is going to be as rosy as you might expect. Instead of being disgusted by this ritual, we just joined in. Having two children who aren’t intimidated by challenge is a blessing. When the opportunity to scale one of the great wonders of the world was presented to them, they jumped on it. From the crazy bus ride to the tram and the Great Wall itself, these two really impressed us. The breathtaking view combined with the surprisingly small number of tourists made for an amazing day of history and imagination. The bus ride back was probably about the scariest thing I have ever experienced—and I rode bulls for a living for a decade. Traffic that was at times four cars wide on a single-lane highway was not my idea of fun. Luckily, I had Patty by my side and my kids were close. If we are to die tonight, I thought, then at least we’ll be together. We had to visit the Forbidden City. This is an icon of the tourist-attraction world, most likely because of its aweinspiring 500-year history of housing emperors and those

in political power. Knowing the history of the city helped us enjoy the sights and keep our minds off the fact that we were the tourist attractions. I could go on about the beauty of the architecture and the history of the city, the square and the Temple of Heaven, but that would take away from the reality of our trip. We were not prepared for the experience of having two blond-haired, blue-eyed children in China and the attention that it brought as we were trying to educate them and explore these incredible sites. We had known they would attract some gazes and maybe even some stares, but the clutching and grabbing by onlookers with cameras who surrounded us finally had us scurrying out of the temple. We continued to explore over the next few days. Temple after temple and picture after picture. This was a beginning. We were learning the art of travel. As a family we grew closer, and individually we grew more aware. Lessons were being taught by us as parents but also to us by the world. Our next destinations await us: Hong Kong, then back into Shanghai. We are ready. Beyond China, our travels will take us to the Land of the Rising Sun. Sushi, samurais and the Shinkansen, Mount Fuji and the Tokyo Skytree—there is so much to see and do in Japan. We are so grateful to be in the position to choose where we go and for how long. The mysteries of Asia are plentiful, surpassed only by its beauty. We have already learned that language is a barrier only if we choose for it to be. We understand each other as people, no matter the colour of our skin or hair. The world, so far, is a magnificent place, full of kindness and love. It can only get better from here. TheFlashPackerZ are a family of four from the small town of Falher, Alberta. These three foundational teachings allow you to begin your journey in Human Design by experimenting with the process of making decisions through understanding how your aura is designed to interact with others (type); the strategy your aura has so it interacts in a healthy manner; and the area within the physical body you can rely on to make decisions (your inner authority). This article is an introduction to the four types in the Human Design System and the strategy for each type. Manifestors Manifestors are here to get the ball rolling. With the closed and repelling aura, these people are here to open doorways and get the creative force of the planet to innovate. The powerful aura is making things happen! They need a strong aura so they can open new avenues for the rest of humanity. This takes a tremendous amount of force, which is why they have a closed and repelling aura. Just because they are opening doors doesn’t mean Manifestors are dragging everyone else along with them. Quite the contrary! These beings are so engulfed in their own creative bubble that they aren’t looking back to see whether anyone is coming with them or not.

The strategy Manifestors are meant to use as they dance with the rest of us is to inform. When Manifestors inform prior to taking action, the rest of us can move out of their way. But if they take action without informing, the rest of us get uneasy. We want to control them because we don’t trust them or are fearful of what they’re doing. So we ask too many questions, and this feels like resistance to Manifestors, who correlate questions with control. For Manifestors, this resistance feels like anger. This anger permeates the situation, and the loop of unease, fear and anger continues until the Manifestor makes that one small adjustment: to inform before taking action. If you have Manifestor children under the age of 12, teach them to ask for permission. By asking for permission, they are learning to inform before they take action. This will ease them into adulting much more gracefully!

PERSONAL GROWTH Projectors Projectors are the guides. They are meant to coach, consult and advise Generators and Manifesting Generators, and they have the perfect electromagnetic field to be this. Their aura is focused and absorbing. Projectors penetrate the auras of Generators and Manifesting Generators and guide them by asking pinpointed, direct questions so Generators and Manifesting Generators can get in touch with their response mechanism and use their generative energy in a constructive way. Key for Projectors is this strategy: wait for the invitation. Invitations are critical. It is important for Projectors to know their innate strengths and qualities. Once they know this, they can decipher the correct invitations. If you are a Projector, you should master being who you are and whatever system you are using to guide others. Become so steeped in the wisdom you are here to present that the Generators and Manifesting Generators will clamor for your advice. Master who you are so you are recognized and invited. You are not here to do the doing, but rather to be the being!

then just provide feedback when the correct amount of time has passed. Life is not meant to be strenuous. Reflectors are like the sage on the mountaintop, watching and not getting involved, waiting for someone to ask them to share their wisdom. So if you are a Reflector, please just relax into your role as an objective judge so you can watch in awe how your evaluation of a situation can improve the next situation. And if you are a parent of one of these elusive unicorns, treat them with compassion as they walk through life sampling and judging so they can provide life-giving evaluations to the rest of us. Once you are aware of your type and strategy, you can begin to witness how your physical body is making decisions without your mind getting in the way. The Human Design System is asking us all to get out of our heads and to bring our awareness to the intelligence and wisdom of the body to make decisions. Leann Wolff is a consultant and infopreneur. Contact Leann at www.powerofself.ca.

Generators and Manifesting Generators The Generators and Manifesting Generators are the workers, the builders for our material plane. Their aura is open and enveloping. They are waiting to be asked for their generative energy, the energy that keeps the world going. The strategy for Generators and Manifesting Generators is to respond. If you are a Generator or Manifesting Generator, you are here strictly to respond. Never use your energy unless your physical body has responded to the task or work in front of you. What is response? A guttural noise that comes up from your gut region! Ah-huh, uhn-uh or mmm. This is a noisy body as it grunts its way through life. Your grunts are your guidance system—they tell you if your physical body has the energy to do the work or task. Response is also the engagement of the body. The physical body always tells us what it has energy for. Generative energy happens when Generators and Manifesting Generators respond, and it feels like satisfaction. Degenerative energy happens when Generators and Manifesting Generators react or initiate, and this feels like frustration. Reaction is the mind trying to get in the way of response, and initiation is reserved for the Manifestors. Reflectors Reflectors are the judges or evaluators. These people are critical to have on our planet. Like the canary in the coal mine, they give us constant feedback as to how the whole operation is working. The Reflector’s aura is sampling. The sampling aura is so important for their health. They just need to sample the information and give feedback. Like Teflon or duck feathers, nothing is meant to stick to them. They are just sampling and letting go. The key strategy for Reflectors is to wait a lunar cycle before making a decision. It sounds odd, but these people need to be initiated into whatever they are giving feedback about, and they need the time of the lunar cycle to talk out whether or not the initiation is right for them. So, if you’re a Reflector, please don’t get caught up in the rat race. You are so disappointed when you do. Just relax and wait for the right initiation. The right one unveils the awe life has in store, as you sample so many experiences and Fall 2019 l GUIDED SYNERGY 21

SPIRITUALITY

WHY METTA MATTERS Practicing loving-kindness

I

n our quick-fix, fast-paced, technology-rich society, we have forgotten what it means to be alive as humans, together on this journey. Anger, disconnection, jealousy, grasping, aversion and other sources of personal suffering are common traits. Often, we don’t realize we are suffering from one of these poisons until we experience what it’s like to take back control of our thoughts. Once we learn that we are responsible for our thoughts, feelings, actions and reactions, everything changes. It’s from this place that we are able to understand just how connected everything, and everyone, is. Metta is one of the four sublime states taught by the Buddha. Metta is a Pali word that means loving-kindness. Us versus them and you versus me are concepts that create more harm than good. We have seen this time and time again throughout human history. By developing an understanding of metta, you will begin to notice that there is no difference between you and me. Metta allows for the deeper understanding that while the ego is important, it doesn’t have to be the driving force behind our thoughts, opinions or interactions with others. When they hear the word Buddhism, many people think of monks in robes and eternal forgiveness. However, there are many ways to develop an understanding of metta and the power behind this age-old wisdom. If you search online, you will find hundreds of links, but, like with most things, there isn’t a single right way to have more loving-kindness in your life. Once you understand the concepts of metta, you will be able to build a practice authentic to you.

and serve a purpose. A friendly stranger is someone you attach to a specific service, such as a clerk who boxes your groceries at the store, the dental hygienist who always makes you feel comfortable or the person who pumps your gas. The last player is the difficult person. This is someone who triggers you to feel mad, annoyed or angry. Remembering that metta is a practice of loving-kindness, the key here is to wish as much metta to the difficult person as you do to the person you love deeply. How can we ever wish well for someone we don’t like? It all comes down to perspective. That person who makes your heart light up, did they always make you so happy? What about before you knew them or when they were a child? When you reflect on this, you may notice that before this person was a major part of your life, they didn’t make your heart light up. They were simply a neutral person in your life. Has the difficult person always been difficult for you? What about before you knew them or when they were a child? Did you hate them then? Once again, probably not. This understanding makes it possible to wish metta to all people equally. It’s through this practice that we realize we are all doing the best we can with what we have. This opens our hearts up to a beautiful perception that there isn’t a defined line between you and me, us and them. At the end of the day, we are more similar than we are different.

To help with your understanding, let’s talk about some of the major players when it comes to metta. First, you are one of those players. If we don’t know what it feels like to wish ourselves loving-kindness, how can we know what lovingkindness would look like for others?

The point of this reflection is to become aware of the reality of life. Every moment is different. Nothing ever stays the same, nothing is perfect, and nothing is permanent. These are some of the major teachings the Buddha shared with the world after his enlightenment.

However, for a lot of us, the self-love part of a metta practice can be the hardest to fully accept. This is why it can be helpful to start off with wishing metta to another player, someone you love deeply. This could be a friend, parent, partner or child — anyone close to you who makes your heart light up when you think of them.

What would be possible in your life if you allowed more loving-kindness in? If you developed more metta in your life, what opportunities would arise for you?

Next we have friendly strangers. You don’t know them very well personally, but you like the way they show up in your life

GRIEF AND CHILDREN Helping children cope

W

e have all experienced grief and know that it is much more than the sorrow we feel when someone has died. There are many forms of loss and many reasons for grieving. For children, these can include events like moving far away from a place or people they love, serious conflict with friends or loved ones, the break-up of their family, and life-changing illness or disability. There are dozens of grief symptoms, and most people— children and adults—experience grief in their own unique way. However, in adults grief tends to be a more sustained emotional experience than it is for kids. Children’s grief symptoms can include intense feelings, but they tend to come and go, with periods of intense grief followed by periods of apparent happiness and well-being, sometimes all within the same day. Children may manifest symptoms similar to those commonly experienced by adults, such as crying, lethargy, sadness, bargaining, anxiety, anger and even numbness or denial. Changes in eating and sleeping are also common in grieving children. Often, however, children’s grief will show up in more subtle ways. They may start having issues with learning and paying attention, and their performance in school or activities may suffer. Some children exhibit behavioural issues like irritability, arguing and fighting. Others withdraw, disengaging from friends, family or activities they used to enjoy. Children are also likely to experience a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows and may not be sure how to handle what they feel. The grief process is different for everyone. There is no predictable schedule, and it should not be rushed. To support children who are grieving, it is important to be patient as they experience their unique reactions to the loss. With time and support, things generally do get better. However, it is normal for significant dates, holidays or other reminders to trigger feelings related to the loss. You can help children to cope by

encouraging them to take care of themselves, seek support and acknowledge their feelings. Grieving children can also benefit from support programs. Our organization, the Grande Prairie and District Grief Support Association, offers Camp Heal-A-Heart and Circle of Life to support children and youth who have been identified as experiencing loss. Our programs reduce the incidence of isolation, confusion, depression, loneliness, sadness and guilt in children, while increasing their ability to cope and find happiness in their lives. We measure our outcomes by pre- and post-tests; observation; follow-up groups; and reports from parents, social workers and teachers. In The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog and Other Stories from a Child Psychiatrist’s Notebook (written with Maia Szalavitz), Dr. Bruce Perry writes, “The more healthy relationships a child has, the more likely he will be to recover from trauma and thrive. Relationships are the agents of change and the most powerful therapy is human love.” It has been estimated that up to 75 percent of depression in adulthood is directly linked to unresolved grief issues. What we have learned from our program outcomes is that if young people deal with their grief issues now, through the support of healthy relationships and programs like ours, in the future they have a better chance to be stronger, healthier individuals. The grief support staff at the Grande Prairie and District Grief Support Association have a passion for helping children to discover and express their emotions. For more information, contact the organization at circleoflife@telus.net.
