01 Bromma Hangar Feb2023 - May2019 Site: Bromma, Stockholm

Project 1:

Bromma Airport Hangar Design Tingyu Su

Portfolio Description: Bromma Airport is Stockholm's first airport, but since the construction of Arlanda Airport, the airlines that used to operate at Bromma Airport gradually decreased. Now, only civil small aircraft, government aircraft, and air ambulance planes stop at Bromma Airport. In the years following the construction of Arlanda Airport, the buildings inside Bromma were gradually demolished and renovated. The once vast hangar buildings were transformed into large shopping centers, and a large hangar was converted into a new small terminal building. With the advancement of aircraft technology, Bromma's runway became unsuitable for most planes. Additionally, with population growth and a shortage of housing in the city center, the Swedish government plans to abandon Bromma in 2026 and turn it into a residential area.

As Bromma is dismantled in the future, the newly created residential area lacks infrastructure such as fire stations and medical centers. The building I have designed this time was initially intended as a hangar for air ambulance services, which includes a medical station, aircraft maintenance workshops, and offices. Firefighting and medical center functionalities were considered from the outset, and a two-phase plan was designed. The initial phase is the hangar, and in the later phase, it can be expanded and converted into a fire and medical center. This includes a fire station, accommodation for firefighters, a training area, changing and office spaces for medical staff, an open medical center for consultations, and a lecture hall for safety awareness campaigns.

Architecture & Daylight 2022

02 Off the Grid Nov2022 - Dec2022 Site: Stockholm, Sweden

Project 2: Daylight Openings Detailing Tingyu Su

Portfolio Description: This architectural structure is nestled within a forest in the southeastern region of Stockholm. It creates an idyllic, self-contained space intended for solitary occupation. It has been meticulously designed to cater to the dimensions of a single individual and to support self-sufficiency for approximately one week, with access to water and provisions. This dwelling offers functionality for cooking, enduring winter nights, engaging in artistic pursuits, and facilitating meditation. The structural design concept amplifies the minutiae of conventional wooden walls. Beyond the interior walls, insulation, structural components, and waterproofing layers, it enhances the dimensions of the ventilation layer. Within the framework of the exterior facade, it accommodates activities within the neutral zone, such as cooking, dining, and reading. Thoughtful adjustments in the dimensions of the facade panels provide a balance: preventing rainwater infiltration while allowing visual engagement with the surrounding scenery.

Beneath the expansive framework, adapted for summertime conditions, an insulated winter chamber is integrated. This chamber is fully equipped to provide a space for relaxation, artistic endeavors, meditation, and scenic contemplation, thus adapting to the changing seasons. The structure of the summer cabin employs 200x50 wooden beams to support both the eastern section and the roof panels. Secondary beams are employed to support the panels, requiring only nail fixation for the roof panels. This set of architectural drawings encompasses all the plans from the second iteration of the design, as well as detailed models from the initial design phase.

02 Syrian Rebuild Jun2020 - Oct2020 Site: Damascus, Zamalka

Portfolio Description: The site is located in Damascus Zamalka, Syria, in an area of moderate post-war damage. The buildings in the moderately damaged areas, the building facades and staircases are incomplete, and there is more room for repair and renovation of the original building framework. The post-war population is mainly divided into domestic residents and foreign refugees. My design divides the reconstruction plan into two phases: the first phase addresses the urgent housing and education problems of the domestic residents by building scaffolding structures to repair the broken walls, as well as a temporary school on the first floor for the out-of-school children. The second phase was to attract refugees from abroad back to their home countries. After the house was repaired, a facade was added to the steel scaffolding to turn it into a permanent external structure. In combination with the cooling cavity, a moist and cool space was created for people to rest.

In addition, the building is combined with a solar chimney on the south side of the building to cool down and humidify the air inside the building, further increasing people's activity space and living comfort by using low-cost green building methods. Materials are recycled in the design process. Post-war building debris can be collected by residents and made into recycled bricks by adding concrete, cutted wheat-straw, concrete and sand. The temporary school will be used for emergency purposes only. When the schools around the site resume classes, the temporary school will be dismantled, and the materials can be reassembled in the open space as a playground for children to climb and pedestrians to rest. This site's technology and design techniques can be applied to other post-war reconstructions in similar areas.

UIA City Dimension Tingyu Su

04 City Dimension Jun2020 - Nov2020 The new Babylon was designed for the architecture of the future. It was designed for a society of creative people who would be free from the drudgery of everyday life. ----Constant

Postmodern Issues In the post-2020 postmodern world, human communication has transitioned from oral to written, print, and information technology eras. This technological leap has brought convenience but also challenges. Supported by new media tech, cities are undergoing significant spatial and structural changes. To address new crises, cities should possess problem-solving abilities. We achieve this through the concept of 'latitude,' constructing cities from four directional axes, making them dynamic and adaptable to diverse environments and functions.

Q: What does the medium enhance? The problem with media enhancement. A: sensory overload, consumerism takes over thinking, and too much information makes people lose their ability to choose.

Q: Is the media pushed to extremes? A: People lose the ability to think, unable to filter the information presented to them, no time to reflect on themselves and communicate with themselves, confined to their daily life trivia, just killing time.

Q: What have we lost through the media? A: the loss of real human contact, real human contact with nature

Q: What does the medium restore? A: The media restore the architectural space that is not bound by function, the emotional connection between neighbors, and the community-based gathering activity.

05 Work project

Portfolio Description:

Sep2021 - Dec2021 Site: China, beijing Contribution: Plan& Section&Construction drawings

In September through January of 2021, I interned under the supervision of Master Chen Yifeng at China architecture design & Research. During this internship, I participated in two main projects. One was related to the architectural design phase of a local police station, and the other one is presented here. I was involved in and completed various tasks for this project, including modifying and creating site plans, drawing elevations and sections, as well as building partial models of the entire site in SketchUp and Rhino, including the western buildings and facades of the main building. I also contributed to the detailed drawings of the stairs.

The entire internship lasted for four months, during which I primarily participated in the design and drafting processes of these two projects. I collaborated with colleagues to discuss different design solutions and learned how to align our designs with the requirements of the client while ensuring design quality and cost-effectiveness. I also realized that architecture is not an isolated discipline but an industry that collaborates with other specialties such as structural engineering, HVAC, interior design, and more.
