Publishers Chalk Talk

by Jeffery Neil Fox Special Edition Super Guide

TAMPA BAY HAS THE BEST FANS!

It’s a new year and we are in full swing of the USF Basketball and Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey season. I know that I’ve become an expert on fan culture over the past four decades and have been fortunate to cover our hometown teams as a member of the media and as a fan. The media does a great job of covering the games, but the loyal fans are the ones that carry the torch for spirit and support the local teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the University of South Florida Bulls, Tampa Bay Lightning and the Tampa Bay Rays. Win or lose, true fans will continue to root and hoot for their teams. Sure, I have to mourn when my team loses, but I use mind control, and get over the loss quickly and set my sights on the next game hoping that my team will rally, play relentlessly, and get back on track and win. Yes, winning is everything. You just have to believe that the players and supporting cast will dig deep and do whatever it takes to win. I have seen enough games to determine that the teams that win are the ones that don’t allow big plays and make the big plays. Do you believe in miracles? I know that I do. I’ve seen my share, many of them on the sports playing fields. There is nothing more exhilarating than to see your favorite team end the game victorious. I know I always like leaving the stadium/arena after a win versus a loss. I’ll never get used to losing and I’ll never tire of watching my favorite teams win. After all, the word “fan” is short for the word “fanatical.” Do I sound like I’m a bit fanatical? I have been fortunate to have attended sports games across the country during my career publishing the team newspaper and publication covering the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and I now publish the popular fan guide your are now reading called “Gear Up For The Game.” I’ve roamed the sidelines catching the action with my camera. I do take action photography of the action on the field, but my favorite shots are human interest pictures. I like focusing on the fans and point my camera on the spectators that support the teams. My wife and I own the Authentic Team Merchandise retail super center “It’s Bucs, Bulls, Rays and Lightning Heaven.” We are the official merchandiser for the USF Bulls. We do have a good feel of the pulse of fandom. I am amazed on how the Tampa Bay fans dig in for pre game tailgates in preparation for the game. Tailgating before the game has become a Tampa Bay tradition. I love cruising the parking lots outside Raymond James Stadium before the game to see how creative tailgaters can get. I am amazed at the ingenuity that I continue to see. Everyone tries to outdo each other with decorations, favorite recipes, and drink sensations. Some fans paint up and take on a “Super Character” persona like the world famous fan icon and emperor of the Pewter Nation, “Big

Nasty.” The party starts in the parking lot as fans put on their game face and become the 12th man on the field. There is no negativity pre game. Everyone is happy with great anticipation that their team will be victorious when the final seconds roll off the clock. As far as I am concerned, the ultimate smack is the scoreboard. Nothing wrong with some bantering and smack talk with other fans, but I firmly believe in treating opposing fans with respect. I believe that we should all be ambassadors for our team and make everyone feel welcome to the great city of Tampa, Florida that we live in.

Bulls Heaven on Fowler

Have you been to our brand new Bulls Heaven retail store on Fowler Avenue. We recently opened up the store (second location) on the corner of Fowler Avenue and Bruce B. Downs. We are located right across the street from the University of South Florida Tampa, campus. We are inside the Mobile service station adjacent to the Bulls Express convenience store. Poke your head inside and say hi. You can get gas, refreshments, snacks and all your Bulls gear all at the same time. We will continue to focus on the new merchandise that manufacturers are bringing to the retail marketplace. We usually are the first to get in novel and new gear with the Bucs, Bulls, Lightning and Rays logo.

Athletic District

Bill McGillis the Senior Assistant Athletic Director at USF took my son Eric, my wife Sara and I for a complete guided tour of all the construction in progress at the Athletic District on the South Florida campus in Tampa. We looked at the new construction which included theBasketball training complex, the new joint Baseball/Softball stadium, brand new Soccer Stadium and the new football fields that have been constructed. All of us were very impressed with all the construction on that will soon be completed. I talked with USF’s Athletic Director Doug Woolard and he said that when all is completed that USF will have the finest athletics complex amongst all the Big East schools. I can easily say that USF’s facilities will be the “crown jewel” and will be a huge recruiting tool. When I was a student at USF back in the early 1970’s I founded the USF Lacrosse Club. I used to shag lacrosse balls where the main football field is now. I did get a flash back of my years as a student close to four decades ago. The campus has changed over the years. I’m a proud Alumni. Jeffrey Neil Fox has covered the Tampa sports scene since arriving in Tampa in 1971. Fox and his wife Sara own the Authentic Team Merchandise Retail Super Store “It’s Bucs, Bulls, Rays and Lightning Heaven” at 14823 N. Florida Avenue, Tampa, FL 33613 and the new Bulls Heaven store at 2829 E. Fowler Avenue Tampa, FL 33612. 813-908-2827 www.BullsHeaven.com www.BucHeaven.com www.GearUpForTheGame. com Fox publishes this popular fan guide “Gear Up For the Game.” jnf@bullsheaven.com

We may not be Super Bowl hosts this year. We may not have our team in the Super Bowl this season. What we do have is a big pirate celebration. As a further extension of our love of all things Buccaneer, we take to the streets and laugh at our troubles. Heck, what troubles? We’re pirates (for the day)!!! Argh! We laugh…at dangerously high unemployment rates. We scowl…at ridiculously low property values. We taunt…identity thieves with unsecured computer networks. I know, not everyone likes to party like a pirate. Some would rather stay home and scowl at the revelers being shown misbehaving on the local news. If you want to have a good time and you enjoy some of the best people watching on the planet, join me. One of my favorite ways to enjoy Gasparilla is on a bicycle. With a little advance planning, like a pre-approved parking space and a very early start, you can see more of the day and not be stuck in the area that is as far as you’re willing to walk. If you’re vertically challenged (under tall), a bike seat raises your view above the crowd. Remember to wear a backpack and bring a padlock. You may not always be able to pedal your ride through the crowds. For your safety and the safety of others, walk your bike through high density areas. Some pirates are pretty dense. If you’ve never been on a boat for Gasparilla, it’s as fun as it looks. There are certain challenges, though. Don’t boat with someone whose consumption of pirate ale is not under careful control. Also, make sure there are, ahem, facilities available on the boat or you may be using a bucket for something other than bailing. Then there’s the personal residence party on the parade route. The key to this way of enjoying the festivities is to GET INVITED. Showing up on someone’s lawn and fitting in with the crowd might work if you say you’re there with…Ed. Or, Bob. Yeah, that’s it, I’m with him. If you are actually invited, know that you will likely need to arrive early and stay late due to the massive crowd around the parade route. Yet another way to enjoy the festivities is to be fortunate enough to belong to a Krewe. They’re a mysterious lot, the krewes. Legend has it you must contribute wisely and often of your treasures to belong to one of the infamous clans. The way some tell it, you must be willing to bleed your very

life blood for ye’ krewe. Of course, the beneficiaries are very often worthy social causes so give until it hurts, ya’ scallywags. Put your cell phone on vibrate. The street party is too loud and you won’t hear it ringing over the ringing in your ears from cannon fire. Meet me at the Platt Street Publix. Last year we sat on the sidewalk and had lunch before the parade. I had cheese and crackers. My friend had the seafood guy steam her some shrimp. That was funny; the way people were smelling the Old Bay and wondering “Where did that come from?” There were people enjoying Publix fried chicken and doughnuts washed down with Budweiser. It was a regular smorgasbord…that’s a pirate feast for you landlubbers! Samantha Bond PEO & Insurance Broker 1.877.4Bond.20 Toll Free Phone www.Sbrecommend.com

C

ongratulations to our Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a wonderful season! I wish I had entered a pool on how many games the Bucs were going to win! I would be rich! As we settle down in disappointment but pride for our home town team, we have visions of what if. Each game we played, we see where we could have done things differently, called different plays, changed referees. Just kidding. The door is closed on yesterday and we need to support teams that are climbing their way to booking their flights to Dallas. We are not finished yet, as Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans! We have homegate parties to plan! That is right! Don’t retire those jerseys to the closet until Draft Day in April. Get out the gear and put on the face paint. We need to “Get ready for some football.” Now is the time to start your list for your favorite tailgate/ homegate foods. Make it easy on yourself. Use Evites for your invitations to your friends and family to attend your Super Bowl Party. Head on over to Buccaneer Heaven on Florida Avenue for the greatest and latest supplies. I thought of something I would like each and every reader of GUFTG magazine to do. Google WTB Tailgate. You will find BucsChat.com, WTB tailgate fans and much more. Try one of these tasty recipes at your Super Bowl Party from Chef Red: Kansas City BBQ, Sweet and Spicy Southern Style Baked Means, Cleveland Jerk Wings, Pirate Ship Pork Loin, etc. Learn about some of our super fans: The BucWildBoyz, Captain Bones, BucNutz. BUCarino, Scott Dixon, Mark ATLBuc Goodman, Tim, Derek and others. You can always get in contact with Big Nasty and Krewe, Pirate Lady Tampa and Pirate Tom by calling our Chief and “bossman”, Jeffrey Neil Fox. BucGear.com is there for you to conveniently click and order the things that you didn’t get from Santa. I absolutely loved the WTB tailgate time prior to the Buccaneer/ Atlanta game. It was fun, threatening a Falcon fans with his own real sword brought from Atlanta. It was a good thing he didn’t fly and try to get it through airport security. He would have missed the game, or seen it from a jail cell. Ha! We had so much fun posing for fan pictures, watching fans compete in

various games and just waltzing around the camp to the various fans, to give out red, black and silver beads. I screamed out, “THESE are NOT Atlanta’s colors!!!.” There are really nice facilities at camp that cannot be tipped over, if you know what I mean. (You would have to had experienced watching the Gasparilla Parade at the bridge where the Mayor is captured, near the Publix on Bayshore.) Fans enjoyed watching the game on the huge TV screen, with deck seating. With the exclusive camp set up, it wasn’t all that bad if you did not have a game ticket. I loved the bar set up and the food buffet under tent for all the fans. Rain or shine, fans were in and out of that area frequently. I mention all this to tempt you into starting up or enhancing your own tailgate camp for the Bucs and Bulls games. You can get all you need by not just reading this magazine and placing it as your newest coffee table book. Snip the recipes for your grocery shopping list and either get online or stop by one of the two Bucs and Bulls Heaven stores. Remember there are discount coupons to be had for your gear shopping. Now is the time to gather your food and drink supplies and plan your trip for your tailgate/homegate supplies for the Super Bowl. There is plenty of time throughout the week and on Saturday or Sunday, prior to the playoff games, to run out to the biggest sports gear shopping center store in Tampa. I am counting the days until the Draft Day Party at RJ Stadium and the Tampa Bay Buccaneer Fanfest in June 2011. GO BUCS!! Stay healthy as you never stop training to be the next Super Bowl champs after February 6th. Let’s all look forward. Forward to getting together, meeting new fans and supporting our local Tampa teams. Let’s also remember to support our Bolts and Rays. They could use some pirate fans and hey, secure your tickets to some of their games and get out your gearwear. Tailgate in the hockey and baseball parking lots. The job is NEVER done for the Tampa fans!!! May the best team win the Lombardi Trophy!!! Sylvia Huddleston aka Queen of the Pewter Nation

Wow what a season! Could anyone have predicted that the 2010 season was going to be so awesome? Even the most optimistic of us wouldn’t have guessed a 10/6 record for this year. Granted we had a favorable schedule, but after going 3/13 last year it was quite a turn around. We really have to give a lot of credit to coach Morris and GM Dominick for putting some great talent on the field and getting the most out of a bunch of young players. This was the best turn around in team history and it was done with the youngest team in the league. Not only that but after having a bunch of injuries we continued to get better. I’m not sure even the Bucs realized how good we would be. It is wonderful to imagine what this team may be able to do going forward. It looks like we finally have a franchise quarterback. Maybe the best this team has ever had (no disrespect to Doug Williams). With incredible talent at wide receiver, a couple of great running backs and some really good offensive lineman, it looks like we have an offense that we will be proud of for years to come. On the defensive side of the ball we continued to get better as the season went on. With losses of key players we still managed to keep it together enough to beat the reigning champs ( New Orleans Saints) in their house in the last game of the year. Really if not for a bad call (offensive pass interference, are you kidding me) in one game we would have been in the playoffs. As far as I’m concerned though, I was not at all disappointed in our season overall. As someone once said” Our future’s so bright we’ve got to wear shades.” So where do we go from here? Well I think it’s pretty

obvious that we need to improve our pass rush. I would think that defensive end and maybe outside linebacker would be a priority in the draft as well as free agency. Some people think that Barret Ruud should be replaced. I wouldn’t mind seeing someone compete for the position. We still need depth at defensive back as well, although the players that stepped in to replace the injured starters did very well. I would think we may be looking for a center, since Fain has had some injury problems over the last couple years. If you put Zutta there you need someone as versatile to replace him. That may be hard to find. I do feel confident in the team’s ability to find good talent. The last couple of years I must admit like a lot of you I was discouraged (to say the least) that the owners were not spending a lot of money to bring in free agents. After this season however I think they are on the right track. After all how many of us went out and bought new Bentleys. Even if we could we would test drive the Benz or Cadillac first. The results pretty much speak for themselves. To put together a team and coaching staff this good on a budget is pretty impressive. Many think this is why we haven’t been selling out the stadium, when truly it’s probably do more to the fact that the fans that used to attend games just don’t have the money. I think the owners probably saw this coming. So what do I worry about for next season? Not a lot! There are only two things that concern me about next season; the loss of an awesome special teams coach Rich Bisaccia and the Collective Bargaining Agreement. I’m not sure why we let Rich go, but I hope the new guy is as good or better. As we all know all three phases of the game are important. Mostly I’m worried about the Collective Bargaining Agreement and a possible lockout. I would hate to see the same thing happen to the Buccaneers that happened to the Lightning after the Stanley Cup winning year. It has seems taken the Lightning till this season to recover And that lockout happened in 2005. So good luck to the players in dealing with the owners, and Good Luck to the Bucs in the draft and free agency. I can hardly wait till next season. In the mean time Go Lightning, Go Storm, and Go Rays!

The Great City of Tampa. Mayor Pam Iorio will be leaving her 8 year post unfortunately and we need to find a good replacement for her.

Finish Strong Tampa Bay, words to live by in 2011 for all of us!! Last publication, I wrote about BBAG’s (Big {Biblical, Believer, Bay, Bullish, Buccaneer any B is OK} Audacious Goals, so hope you have some BBAG’s shared that you will accomplish this year? Today, I’d like to remind you of your civil duty, as a citizen in your community, to please take time to get out to vote this month (February and March) in your city or county for any election that might be happening. For instance, in Tampa, there will be early voting February 19-26th and then the General Election will be March 1st. Who should you vote for? Well, I really don’t know and am more of a sports guy than a political guy, but I am leaning towards someone that might be the best for our love of the Bucs, Bulls, Lightning, and Rays here in

I had a chance to hear and talk with Past Mayor Dick Greco (1967-1974 and then again 1995-2003) recently. I had shook his hand and heard him several times over the years and always thought he was a pretty good guy. I also thought, he was like a Tampa Fossil, old enough to be my grandfather. Learning more about his accomplishments from his first term, such as how he has calmed racial tension, brought an end to a century-old illegal gambling ring, cleaned up some of Tampa’s most blighted neighborhoods and how he was the first Tampa Mayor to lure major corporations from other big cities to our city, excites me again! Then more recently in his last two terms, he recruited more big companies (kept my former employer Kforce in Tampa), helped a decaying Ybor City come back to life, and helped keep the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa. Greco was the Mayor when the Bucs won their inaugural Super Bowl back in 2003. He still packs it and is sharp as ever! Kind of reminds me of a Ronald Reagan type guy, but is non-partisan, says his political party is called the “Reasonable” Party. He knows Tampa, our sports needs, and more! Heck, he has been in real estate lately, working with Eddie DeBartolo (ex-owner of the San Francisco 49er’s and long-time resident) and even joked with him that maybe he could get his friend to buy the Buccaneers and get Tony Dungy (long-time resident) to be our coach again! You heard it here first!! I’m not a real religious guy necessarily, but he read a quote from The Bible, Old Testament, Proverbs 16:8 (KJV) reading “Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right”. Well, I think we have a lot of good candidates running for Mayor and City Council, so please take the time to learn the facts and get out to vote for the right candidates in your district! So, mark your calendars for early voting February 19-26th or general election on Tuesday, March 1st! I believe our communities will Always Finish Strong together with our voices in voting!
