Welcome We’re in full swing again this summer with our overprints on the Post & Go GG03 desktop unit for the cruise ship season. Located at the Guernsey Information Centre, the GG03 is vending a welcome message to all in Guernsey French, our local patois. We are delighted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landings on July 20, when American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first people ever to land on the moon in 1969. For this special issue, we have included sheets of twenty with gutter pairs - something we haven’t done in a long time. We also commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Prince of Wales’s Investiture, which took place at Caernarfon Castle in Wales. Prince Charles received the title of The Prince of Wales when he was a young boy of nine, although his investiture was not held until 1 July 1969 when the Prince was older.

We mark the re-opening of Hauteville House, the home of Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to name a few. Hauteville House has recently undergone extensive work to restore the building and its décor to their original state and our stamps depict the Look-Out and the Red Room, both of which have now been beautifully restored to their former glory. Our Alderney issue features the author John Keats and his sequence of six lyric odes, written 200 years ago between March and September 1819, when he was just 24 years old. Superbly illustrated by Keith Robinson, the stamps visualise the thoughts behind Keats’s work. Keats never achieved widespread recognition during his own lifetime but is now considered one of the greatest English poets and a key figure of the Romantic Movement. We hope you have a wonderful summer and enjoy our new issues.

Customer Corner Post and Go Our DKU (GG03) has made its trip to Essen and is now back at the Guernsey Information Centre (G.I.C.), where it is vending the Guernsey Old Car Club stamps with a welcome overprint in Guernsey French for tourists or cruise ship passengers alike.

50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing Issue date: 20 July 2019 Presentation Pack: £3.73

The American objective to send astronauts to the moon followed an appeal by President John F. Kennedy, who, in an address to a joint session of Congress on 25 May 1961, said: - “First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.” Competition with the Soviet Union (USSR) helped to drive President Kennedy’s ambitious programme in the socalled ‘Space Race’ and set the stage for an exciting period of development in the United States’ space programme. The Apollo programme In 1966, after several years of work by a team of scientists and engineers, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) carried out the first unmanned Apollo mission to test the structural integrity of the proposed launch vehicle and spacecraft combination. However, tragedy struck on 27 January 1967, when a fire inside the command module of Apollo 1 claimed the lives of all three astronauts during pre-flight testing. It would take more than 18 months, and extensive redesigns, before NASA sent more people into space. The following year, on 11 October 1968, the maiden voyage of an Apollo crew took place as Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele and Walt Cunningham lifted off for the Apollo 7 Earth orbital mission. Just two months later, the Apollo 8 astronauts flew the first lunar orbital mission aboard a Saturn V on 21 December 1968. A live broadcast of their mission showed the astronauts orbiting the moon with previously unseen images, including a view of the Earth rising above the lunar surface. The lunar orbital missions of the Apollo programme had shown that it was possible to reach the moon and return, but all eyes would be on the Apollo 11 crew to prove that they could also land on the moon and return home. At 9:32 a.m. EDT on 16 July 1969, Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy carrying Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. The eight-day mission took the crew on a 935,000-mile journey to another world. An estimated 530 million people watched the televised image and heard Armstrong’s words as he became the first human to set foot on the moon, fulfilling President Kennedy’s objective. By the end of the decade, America’s Apollo space programme had successfully completed two moon landings and Kennedy Space Center was considered to be the launch capital of the world.

50th Anniversary of Prince Charles Investiture Miniature Sheet Sheet £2.00

Issue date: 24 July 2019

In September 2017, Prince Charles became the longest serving Prince of Wales in British history. The Prince of Wales is not an automatic title but one that Charles was bestowed with in 1958, although it wasn’t until 1969 that his investiture took place in a ceremony at Caernarfon Castle in Wales. As heir to the throne, upon his mother’s accession as Sovereign in 1952, Prince Charles automatically received the title of Duke of Cornwall, which meant that he could receive the full income of the Duchy upon reaching the age of 21. He did not become Prince of Wales, however, for another six years when, in 1958, Her Majesty the Queen appointed her son, ‘The Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester’ via Letters Patent, which are the legal documents that the Monarch uses to grant titles. The title ‘Prince of Wales’ was originally granted to Welsh Princes from the 12th century, but the last sovereign Prince of Wales, Llywelyn, was killed in battle by King Edward I in 1282. Edward I’s son, Edward, who was born at Caernarfon Castle, was invested as the first English Prince of Wales. Since then, the title is dynastic and is granted to the male heir apparent of the English – and subsequently British – throne. The title merges with the crown upon accession, and does not pass on to the next in line, which means that the new Sovereign must create the new heir as Prince of Wales. The Earldom of Chester, which is one of the most powerful Earldoms in medieval England, is also granted in conjunction with the title, style and dignity of the Principality of Wales. We are delighted to mark the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Prince Charles’s investiture with our commemorative miniature sheet.

SEPAC: Old Residential Houses: Hauteville House Miniature Sheets: £3.37

Issue date: 24 July 2019

Victor Hugo’s life in exile ‘To the rock of hospitality and liberty, to that portion of old Norman ground inhabited by the noble little nation of the sea. To the island of Guernsey, severe yet gentle’...Victor Hugo Victor Marie Hugo, one of the greatest French writers, moved to Guernsey in 1855 after being exiled from France for opposing Napoleon III. The poet, novelist and dramatist spent 15 years living as an islander and in his words, Guernsey was a rock of hospitality and freedom. He bought Hauteville House in St Peter Port, the only home he owned, and with the help of local craftsmen, set about transforming it into a work-of-art. He created a look-out at the top of the house, with panoramic views of the sea and his homeland in the distance and it was here he penned some of his masterpieces, including Les Misérables, one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Hugo also wrote Toilers of Sea, a story about a reclusive fisherman from the Channel Islands who must free a ship that has run aground to win the hand of the woman he loves. He dedicated the novel to the people of Guernsey. Hugo returned to France in 1870 but his Guernsey home stayed in the family until the writer’s grandchildren gifted it to the City of Paris in 1927. Now a museum, it has recently re-opened after extensive restoration to re-create the house as it would have looked in his day. A statue of Victor Hugo was presented to Guernsey by France in 1914 in recognition of the island’s hospitality to him during his exile. The statue in Candie Gardens depicts him mid-stride as though exploring the island on foot, one of his favourite pastimes. - Hugo’s works continue to be widely read today.

200th Anniversary of John Keats ‘Odes to A....’ Set of 6 stamps: £4.47

Issue date: 24 July 2019

John Keats was born in 1795 in London. When he was still young, he lost both his parents – his father died in 1808 and his mother just two years later in 1810. When he was 15, Keats entered into a medical apprenticeship and eventually went to medical school. He wrote his first poems in 1814 and, in 1816, he abandoned medicine to focus on poetry. His first volume of poetry was published the following year but drew critical attacks from an influential magazine. In 1818, Keats nursed his brother Tom through the final stages of tuberculosis, the disease that had killed their mother. Tom died in December and Keats moved to a friend’s house in Hampstead. It was there that he fell in love with 18-year old Fanny Brawne. It was whilst in Hampstead that Keats entered a time of remarkable creative inspiration and produced some of his best work. However, it also marked a period where his health and finances fell into sharp decline. In the summer of 1820, Keats and his friend, the painter Joseph Severn, set off for the warmer weather of Italy in a bid to recover his health. Keats knew he was dying, recognising the first symptoms of what he referred to as the “family disease”, having nursed his mother and a younger brother through their deaths, Severn nursed Keats until he eventually succumbed to tuberculosis in Rome on 23 February 1821. He was buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome. Keats’s work never achieved widespread recognition during his own lifetime although, perhaps reflecting an inner confidence, following an unfavourable review of his work, Keats wrote, “I think I shall be among the English poets after my death”.
