The archaeological site is the top experience of Aquileia. Most of the Roman finds are freely accessible with a confortable walk through the site (The Roman Forum, the River Port, etc). The National Archaeological Museum collects a great number of finds (sculptures, mosaics, carved gems) organized in two floors and different rooms.
Once a year Aquileia gets crouded of masquerade people wearing Roman suits. The event is named "Tempora" and is just a re-enactment of the city founding: Celts and Romans fight on the battleground showing the different habits, dances and traditions of that age and those peoples. Some of them are our guests!
The Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta has grown through the centuries over the original roman nucleus (IV DC). The largest roman mosaic floor ever known is still visible and well preserved. Aquileia, ancient seat of Patriarchate, is the starting point of "Iter Aquileiense" and other religious tours through the region.
Aquileia from 1998 is defined by UNESCO as a world heritage site for his archaeological remains. With a short day trip of 40 km the town of Cividale del Friuli (another wonderful UNESCO World Heritage site) is easily accessible, Less than 20 km to reach the beautiful fortified town of Palmanova that is waiting 2016 to reach the same UNESCO recognition.
