The student is exposed to emergency patient care through both classroom training and hands-on application. Topics include patient assessment, basic life support techniques (including airway management and CPR), oxygen therapy, treatment of shock, treatment of fractures, management of various medical emergencies, and emergency childbirth. This course allows the advancement of IV Therapy and Medication Administration. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be eligible to take the North Carolina and/or National Registry Intermediate Emergency Medical Technician certification exam. Fee is waived for law, fire, and EMS personnel. Pre-registration is required. Pre-requisites that are required include successful completion of compass tests. Minimum scores are: 81 on reading, 70 on writing, and 45 on pre-algebra, along with current EMT Basic Certification and current CPR certification, a High School Diploma or GED. Students will be required to have a physical and shot records for clinical and rides. If you are affiliated with a fire/ EMS/police agency, you must present valid proof during registration and a letter from your agency of affiliation for the fee to be waived. Medication Administration Aide This course is designed to meet training requirements for the North Carolina Board of Nursing Medication Aide Certification. The training prepares Nurse Aides to administer medications to long term care residents. Course topics include scope of duties; legal and ethical responsibilities; administration of medications by various routes; infection control; and documentation including commonly used abbreviations. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate and are then eligible to take the state competency exam administered under NC Division of Health Services Regulation. The Medication Aide employed in a long term care/ skilled facility must also be listed on the Nurse Aide 1 Registry. Therefore a requirement for course enrollment is that the student is an NA 1 with active listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide 1 registry. **Medication aides who pass medications in long term/ skilled nursing facilities should not be confused with medication aides who pass medications in adult care settings such as assisted living or group homes. Additional Information: On the first day of class, you must present a copy of verification as a Nurse Aide 1 in good standing on the NC Registry. This can be verified on line at https:// www.ncnar.org/verify_listings1.jsp. A contact email should be sent to the Director of Health Careers & NA Training Program (rwcrow@gtcc.edu) to receive the Employment certification form and make an appointment to present these two documents (NA Registry verification and Employment certification) for preregistration for the course. Nurse Assistant 1 (NA) This course introduces basic nursing skills required to provide personal care for patients, residents, or clients in a health care setting. Topics include communications, safety, patients’ rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, emergencies, rehabilitation, and mental health. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills necessary to qualify as a Nursing Assistant 1 with the North Carolina Nurse Aide 1 Registry. This is a certificate-level course. A high school diploma or GED is required. YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS TO REGISTER AND ATTEND A COURSE: 1. Be at least 18 years of age (no exceptions)
