Marine Corps Has Tech Look Two Tech alumni are carrying a total of seven stars in the Marine Corps, subject to Senate confirmation. Lt. General Raymond G. Davis, a 1938 ChE graduate, has been nominated by President Nixon for the four-star post of Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. Major General William G. Thrash, a 1939 CE graduate, has been nominated for his third star and the position of Commander, Marine Corps Development and Education Command, the post formerly held by General Davis. General Davis, a native of Fitzgerald, Georgia, served throughout World War II and the Korean War, winning the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism during the 1st Marine Division's historic fight to break out of the Chosin Reservoir Area. Against overwhelming odds he led his battalion in a terrific fourday battle that saved a rifle company from annihilation and opened a mountain pass for the escape of two trapped Marine regiments. In addition, General Davis holds every other United States medal for valor. He commanded the 3rd Marine

Division in Vietnam, returning in 1969 to assume his present post at Quantico. He is married to the former Willa Knox Heafner of Lincolnton, North Carolina. They have three children, Raymond G., Jr., Gordon M., and Willa Kay, who is a

sophomore at Georgia Tech this year. General Thrash, a native of Tifton, Georgia, played football for Tech during his senior year. He also served during World War II and the Korean conflict. A Marine aviator, he was shot down over North Korea, receiving one of his three Legion of Merit awards for meritorious service as senior United Nations officer in a Chinese Communist prisoner-of-war camp during his imprisonment of almost two years. He also counts the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and seven Air Medals among his decorations for gallantry in action and outstanding performance. General Thrash also served in Vietnam as Commanding General of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing before assuming his present position as Deputy for Education and Director of the Education Center at the Marine Corps Development and Education Command. He and his wife, the former Virginia Merryman of Atlanta, Georgia have two sons, William Gay, Jr. and Ralph Merryman. D

The Georgia Tech Gold Star List Plans have been i n i t i a t e d to construct a memorial in honor of those Tech men of all wars who lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces. This memorial, in the form of a bronze plaque, will be installed on the campus in the new Georgia Tech Student Center.
