Welcome! Welcome to the San Fernando Valley – fondly known as “the Valley”— where blue skies keep watch 329 days of the year. From the world’s center for entertainment to the rich, cultural heritage of our ethnic neighborhoods, the Valley mingles small town charm with big city lifestyles. The Valley has evolved from a collection of ranches and farms to an area of 40 bustling communities with a population of almost 1.8 million within its 260 square miles. It is our nation’s #1 retail market and home to small and family-owned businesses, as well as multi-national corporations and public companies. The Valley has served as a backdrop for many Westerns and other television and film productions; provided a home base for businesses including the aerospace and entertainment industries; and has become a favorite location for many colleges, universities, and trade schools. Boasting beautiful weather conditions year-round, the Valley enjoys an average daily temperature of 77.5 º F (25º C) making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. If we had to choose a central hub for the Valley, it would most likely be Ventura Boulevard, a strip of high-end restaurants and shops that stretches from Universal City to Thousand Oaks. Here you’ll find everything from diners and fast-food joints, boutique shopping to traditional clothing stores, grocery stores, coffee shops and lots of retail shopping. The Valley offers immense options for business and pleasure. If you’re looking for a place to live, work, play or shop, this directory is your guide. If you have any additional questions about the Valley, please contact the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce at (818) 989-0300, or the San Fernando Valley Visitors & Convention Bureau,

Life in the Valley

The San Fernando Valley is one of the most vibrant, family-friendly areas of Los Angeles. Surrounded by parks with running paths and tree-lined streets, you are close to shopping, healthcare, educational facilities (elementary through college) and numerous area attractions. Because the Valley is a part of the City of Los Angeles, you reap the benefit of having large city services in a small town environment. Schools The Valley has some of the best private, magnet and charter school programs in Los Angeles. Whether your child is gifted, has a particular interest or requires special attention, there is likely a school program that fits their needs. Parks The San Fernando Valley is home to numerous neighborhood ‘pocket parks,’ city parks, recreation areas, and large Regional Open Space preserves. This offers families the chance to spend the day together for little to no cost and to savor those precious moments in life. Entertainment When you live in the Valley, you live in a cultural mecca with access to museums, art galleries, movie theatres, and historic sites. The Valley also affords you access to television and movie studios, theme parks, horseback riding, hiking, practically anything you can think of. If you can’t find what you are looking for in the San Fernando Valley, you have easy access to freeways in other parts of the L.A. area.

Public Transportation Our public transportation system allows uninterrupted movement from many parts of the Valley to downtown Los Angeles and surrounding cities. See page 10. Shopping Retail and wholesale shopping is alive and well in the San Fernando Valley, whether its at one of several shopping malls or on a major boulevard or avenue, you can fulfill your heart’s desire. WWW.SANFERNANDOVALLEYCHAMBER.COM

Healthcare We have over 12 hospitals in the Valley, as well as trauma centers, urgent care and other healthcare facilities. Restaurants Whether you have a yen for Korean, Italian, Thai, Middle Eastern, Kosher, Russian, Argentinean, Mexican or anything else, the Valley has a restaurant to satisfy your cravings.

Fun Facts about the Valley Life in the San Fernando Valley is an exquisite and unique experience. The diversity of the population by age, culture, and interest ensures that you can fulfill a broad range of pastimes and find new ones along the way. With world-class restaurants, fun concerts, great movie theatres and several playhouses to choose from, you’ll never run out of things to do. Well-kept parks and recreation areas abound, and a remarkable freeway system makes it simple to take quick jaunts to cool beaches, majestic mountains and sun-baked deserts. And, yes, there’s also our enviable climate of which residents from New York, Chicago and just about every other metropolis can only dream. • The San Fernando Valley is composed of six incorporated cities: Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, Hidden Hills, and San Fernando, with the majority of the Valley within the jurisdictional boundaries of the City of Los Angeles. • If the Valley were its own city, it would be the sixth largest city in the nation. • The Valley covers 223 square miles. • More than half of the City of Los Angeles lies within the San Fernando Valley. • The Treaty of Cahuenga, ending the Mexican-American War fighting in Alta California, was signed in 1847 by Californios and Americans at Campo de Cahuenga, in what is now North Hollywood. • The Valley enjoys 329 days of sunshine a year.

• Small business is the backbone of the economy. • Big business has chosen the Valley as their flagship location. This is the “real home of Hollywood.” Studios, production offices and post-production houses are located here. LAKE BALBOA

Getting Around For many years, visitors and residents alike thought they needed a car to travel around the Valley and other parts of Los Angeles. With the introduction of urban rail, subways, and bus routes, this perception is beginning to change and is evident in the number of riders who now take mass transit for their business and pleasure travel. The most recent addition to our transit system is the innovative Orange Line that cuts across the Valley. This urban light rail system travels 14 miles between Warner Center and the North Hollywood Red Line subway station and is being extended four miles north from the Canoga Station to the Chatsworth Metrolink Station, offering improvements to northsouth mobility in the western San Fernando Valley. In addition, the Valley’s location provides access to major freeways, airports and train stations, allowing for more extensive travel throughout the United States. Bob Hope Airport, located in Burbank, is served by six major airlines and handles 4.6 million passengers annually. Affectionately known as “Burbank Airport,” it has two terminals and its Valley location is a wonderful alternative to LAX. Open since 1928, Van Nuys Airport is the busiest general aviation airport in the world and home to private, chartered, and small commercial aircraft. It is one of four airports owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, including Los Angeles International, Ontario International and Palmdale Regional. 10

Van Nuys Airport is also home to the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus service, which provides non-stop bus service from Van Nuys to Los Angeles International Airport. This allows travelers to park their cars at Van Nuys and not have to deal with driving to LAX or parking fees at LAX. For your convenience, we have included contact numbers you can call to find out about freeway conditions, bus and train schedules, carpooling, etc.

Doing Business in the Valley The San Fernando Valley has come a long way since the beginning of the 20th Century when its fertile ground not only nourished the development of California’s citrus industry, but also the State’s then fledgling movie and aviation industries. Today, the Valley is the nation’s #1 retail market and is home to small business, family-owned business, as well as L.A.’s most popular public companies. Here are just a few reasons to do business in the Valley: • It puts you in the midst of the aerospace, aviation, and entertainment industries; think government contracts, large corporations. • It provides you with easy access to major freeways leading to other parts of Los Angeles and the state of California. • Its abundance of colleges, universities and trade schools offer businesses a pool of potential interns, employees, and customers. • You are part of neighborhood that is loyal to its local businesses. If all this isn’t enough, you have the support of the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. Since its formation in 1911 as the Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber has been “the force behind business” in the region. It recognized then, as it 12

does now, that the Valley’s life-blood depends upon the health of its business economy. To help businesses achieve success, the Chamber provides a variety of resources, educational and informational programs, and advocacy at all levels of government. The Chamber has direct access to the “movers and shakers” in Los Angeles, the state of California, and on Capitol Hill. They have developed strategic partnerships and relationships with the Valley Economic Alliance, Valley Economic Development Center, and VICA providing a unified voice for Valley business. These relationships also provide business owners with invaluable resources to improve and successfully operate their business, including access to business loans, webinars, seminars and workshops.

The Chamber also offers members access to: • Businesses in the community, allowing networking and relationship building to take place. • SCORE, a program offered through the Small Business Administration to provide entrepreneurs with free, confidential face-to-face business counseling. • Updates on our State and local legislators’ voting records • Business discounts from other members • International trips

Business Resources

A qualified work-force and a business-friendly environment are top priorities for the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce. Both of these assure a higher quality of life for those who live and work in the Valley. Programs and resources are available to expand your business, comply with complex employer regulations, connect you to job seekers, reduce your costs, and assist you with attaining your goals. Demographics in the Valley The San Fernando Valley is a geographical area roughly bounded by the Santa Susana Mountains to the north and west, the Santa Monica Mountains to the south, and the San Gabriel Mountains to the east. It lies wholly within Los Angeles County and includes the cities of: Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, Hidden Hills, and San Fernando, as well as the Valley portion of the City of Los Angeles. This is roughly defined as the area north of Mulholland Dr. and west of Barham Blvd. It comprises the largest part of the San Fernando Valley, accounting for approximately 80 percent of the Valley’s population and 77 percent of its land area. The Los Angeles portion of the Valley is better known by its array of “named

communities.” At present, 27 “named” communities make up the Los Angeles portion of the Valley, including Universal City, home to Universal Studios Hollywood. None of these communities are legal entities; all are part of Los Angeles. The power to name a particular area rests with the Los Angeles City Council, and they exercise that power, carving newly named communities out of existing ones. In recent years, three new areas have been carved out and named – West Hills, Valley Village and Valley Glen. The Valley portion also accounts for an important and sizable part of the City of Los Angeles with 47 percent of its land area and 37 percent of its population.

Landmarks From beautiful gardens to haunted mansions, the history of the San Fernando Valley is as rich as the soil it sits on. Here are just a few of our local landmarks that tell the story of our extraordinary past. CALABASAS Leonis Adobe Museum 23537 Calabasas Rd. (818) 222-6511 Built in 1844, Leonis Adobe is one of the oldest surviving private residences in Los Angeles County and one of the oldest buildings in the San Fernando Valley. It was the home of Miguel Leonis, who was known as the “King of Calabasas.” The museum features the authentically furnished two-story Monterey-Style adobe with original buildings, period livestock, gardens and a vineyard – all recreated to portray how the ranch may have looked in its heyday. Restored, it is now operated as a living museum. The Adobe also has the distinction of being one of the most haunted sites in Los Angeles County. The British paranormal television series “Most Haunted” featured it in 2005. Until it was moved to the Leonis Adobe grounds in 1983, the Plummer House stood in Plummer Park in West Hollywood, where it was known as the “Oldest House in Hollywood.”

CANOGA PARK Shadow Ranch Albert Workman Residence 22633 Vanowen St. (818) 883-3637 Capturing the heritage of the San Fernando Valley’s ranching and agricultural past, the once prosperous Shadow Ranch and its two-story house sits on 13 acres of what originally was a 4,000-acre working ranch containing some 70 barns. Local lore portends that in the 1870s ranch superintendent Albert Workman imported eucalyptus seedlings from his native Australia and planted them at the ranch. Years later, the tall eucalyptus trees cast shadows on the home earning it the name “Shadow Ranch.” CHATSWORTH Homestead Acre/Hill Palmer House 10385 Shadow Oak Dr. (818) 882-5614 The Homestead Acre is the name given to a 1.3-acre site within Chatsworth Park South containing a quaint, old-fashioned redwood bungalow surrounded by gardens, fruit trees and rose bushes. It is the only remaining homestead cottage in the San Fernando Valley.

ENCINO Los Encinos State Historic Park 16756 Moorpark St. (818) 784-4849 The five-acre park, located at the corner of Balboa and Ventura Blvd. in Encino was once the hub of the Rancho El Encino. The property currently includes the De la Ossa Adobe, a nine-room home and the Garnier building, which now contains the Visitor’s Center, as well as a blacksmith shop, a natural spring, and a duck pond. GLENDALE Casa Adobe de San Rafael 1330 Dorothy Dr. (818) 956-2000 Built for Tomas Sanchez, first sheriff of Los Angeles County around 1865, the casa features New England-style architecture. Restored in 1932, the adobe includes a Monterey-style corridor (covered porch), sunken garden, brick patio, gray shake roof, and long narrow front windows adorned with green shutters. Interior furnishings are from the 19th century.

MISSION HILLS Andres Pico Adobe 10940 Sepulveda Blvd. (818) 365-7810 The adobe, which dates to the mid1800s, is believed to be the second oldest home in Los Angeles.

from Spain 300 years ago. The original flower-shaped fountain sits in mission plaza. NORTH HOLLYWOOD The Campo De Caheunga 3919 Lankershim Blvd. (across from the entrance to Universal Studios) (818) 762-3998 The birthplace of California, Campo de Cahuenga was an adobe farmhouse on the Rancho Verdugo where the Treaty of Cahuenga, ending hostilities in California between Mexico and the United States, was signed in 1847 The Campo De Caheunga is now a park and interpretive center.

San Fernando Mission 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd. (818) 361-0186 The 21 missions that comprise California’s Historic Mission Trail roughly trace El Camino Real (The Royal Road) named in honor of the Spanish monarchy, which financed the expeditions into California in the quest for empire. Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana is the 17th Mission on the California Mission Trail. The convento is the largest freestanding adobe in California. The church, school, convento and workshops are open for viewing. The church altar is a statue of Saint Ferdinand brought

TUJUNGA Bolton Hall Historical Museum 10110 Commerce Ave. (818) 352-3420 The “Little Landers,” an early 20th century society of Utopianists, built Bolton Hall as their community center in August 1913. They called it “The Clubhouse.” Bolton Hall contains artifacts, photographs, documents and memorabilia of Sunland-Tujunga and the foothill area. They range historically from the Gabrieleno Indian village through the Mission and Mexican land grant periods to the development of Sunland-Tujunga and the rescue of Bolton Hall. WEST HILLS Orcutt Horticultural Center Rancho Sombra Del Roble 23600 Roscoe Blvd. (818) 883-6641 The Orcutt Ranch, formally called Rancho Sombra del Roble, was the vacation and retirement estate of William Warren Orcutt and his wife, Mary Logan Orcutt. The adobe residence, its garden, ranch structures, oak trees, and citrus orchard are historically significant because W.W. Orcutt, was a pioneer of the oil production industry in California and discovered the prehistoric fossils at the LaBrea Tar Pits.

The Doctors House Museum 1601 W. Mountain Ave. (818) 548-2147 Known as the “Doctors House” because of its inhabitants – three well-known Glendale physicians, the restored two-story Queen AnneEastlake-style home dates to circa 1888. Silent screen star Nell Shipman was a later owner of the home.

The residence is surrounded by 24-acres of gardens and a citrus orchard. The gardens include heritage oaks trees (one of which is 33 feet in circumference and more than 700 years old!) wandering garden paths, formal flower beds, and a variety of interesting specimen trees, exotic shrubs, and flowering plants. Visitors to the ranch can handpick Valencia oranges and white grapefruit when the Ranch opens its orchards to the public each year in July. NORTHRIDGE Rancho Cordillera del Norte 9015 Wilbur Ave. (818) 349-3431 Rancho Cordillera del Norte (Ranch of the North Ridge) is operated under the auspices of the Multicultural Music and Art Foundation of Northridge. “The Rancho” reflects the history of Indian-Spanish-Mexican California. The bells in the bell tower were cast in Latin America during the Colonial Period; and the facade of its New Mission Theater was painted by renowned Mission art authority Dr. Norman Neuerburg in the style of Padre Junipero Serra’s Chapel in Jalpan, State of Queretero, Mexico. 23
