At Gordon State College Community Education we strive to bring you new and exciting ways to enrich your life. We are offering online courses that vary from certificates to learning about business law and much more. This spring we are also offering Business Leadership Solution classes. These classes are available to individuals and local businesses who want their employees to hone up one their soft skills. These classes can be taught at Gordon State College or at your local business. For information please call the Community Education Office.

We are also offering our summer camps for children and are continuing our K-5th grade tutoring and violin lessons for all ages. Expanding people’s minds and horizons is our job and we hope you find a course or two that will help you live your life to its fullest. We have added some new courses to this catalog so be sure to look through the whole catalog before making your choices. AKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN

AKC DOG SPORT RALLY

Any breed or mix breed dog is welcome to attend as long as they are 6 months or older.

Proof of vaccination is required in order to register for the class. Please fax, mail, email, or bring a copy of the vaccination report to our office at time of registration.

The dog should be 6 months or older and all vaccinations should be up to date. The dog doesn’t have to be AKC registered.

Does your dog pull you along for walks? Are you having a difficult time teaching your dog to sit and stay? The AKC Canine Good Citizen program is a certification program designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.

Your dog will be taught different skills including stay, heel, come, and more.

Please bring a 6 foot long webbed lead and a cloth slip/choke collar to the first class.

SWIM LESSONS Gordon’s very own American Red Cross Certified Swim Instructor, Laura Huggins, is offering her services to teach others how to swim. Private lessons for children and adults are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. You choose the number of sessions, at $40 per hour session, and contact us for the specific dates that fit with your schedule.

4 Gordon State College Community Education

AKC Rally is a dog sport which serves as a stepping stone from the CGC course.

The goal is to have fun with your dog and strengthen the bond between your dog and yourself, encouraging teamwork. In rally, signs are placed to the right of the team giving specific actions, which will be learned in class. Unlimited communication is encouraged between the dog and handler, unlike formal obedience. Most teams find this dog sport very exciting as well as enjoyable.

FITNESS SWIMMING - Adults

It is important for adults to take part in activities that help strengthen their muscles, build endurance, and improve their cardiovascular fitness. This course is designed to do all of these things and more. During this course you will have access to the Gordon State College pool and our qualified instructor who will be present to assist you. You may either seek assistance or set your own pace.

Prerequisite: Participants must know how to swim.

Dawn is lead chef and owner of the successful Humble Pie Catering business.

She has worked for Tyler Perry Studios where she has prepared the food scenes in several Tyler Perry films and has also cooked for Turner Studios in Atlanta. She studied abroad at numerous international locations situated in France, Russia, and Italy; she has also studied at Le Cordon Bleu, a French culinary school in Ottawa, Canada and London, England.

BEEKEEPING BASICS People are buzzing about this introductory beekeeping course taught by Master Beekeeper Brutz English. In this class you will learn about bees in our world, from the highly structured bee colony and their intricate hives to how bees work together to sustain the ecosystem around the world.

Monday and Wednesday will be an evening classroom course on campus. On Saturday you will take part in a class that will be held in a local apiary which is a bee farm. Join us as we learn the ABeeeC’s of the world of bees.

DOUBLE BUCKET GARDENING Are you interested in gardening but do not want to commit to growing a large garden?

Dr. Richard Schmude will demonstrate the benefits of double bucket gardening. This type of gardening is easy for anyone to do and improves your yield of vegetables.

With double bucket gardening you can grow fresh vegetables right outside your door. Supplies are included to make your container and you are welcome to bring your own drill with a 2” bit.

LEARN TO DRAW In this class, you will learn to develop charcoal and pencil drawing techniques and perception skills with step-by-step demonstrations. Create your own drawings in no time while training your hand and eye to work together to draw what you see. Beginning to advanced students welcome.

MONDAY NIGHT POTTERY In this class you will study basic but important techniques of throwing pottery forms on the wheel, centering the ball, pulling cylinders, and handbuilding. More advanced students will work on more complex projects. Topics include pulling and attaching handles, sizing lids, applying glaze, firing, and more. The course includes clay, glazes, use of the wheel, and firing in the kiln.

BASIC MUSIC THEORY AND EAR TRAINING This online course in basic music theory, taught by Gordon’s own music professor, Dr. Neil Boumpani, can serve high school students who are planning to major in music in college, or aspiring songwriters who want to understand how to properly compose their music, or help those trying to produce their own music by giving them the understanding of music basics.

CLAY SCULPTURE

PRIVATE VIOLIN LESSONS

This class is for any artist who has the ambition to create portrait or figurative work from clay. You can work from life or reference material. In this course, taught

by Bob Detamore, you will learn the basics of simple terracotta sculpture, hollowing and firing, and putting on a patina color.

This course includes clay, armatures, and kiln firing.

Would you like to improve your posture and your memory skills? Would you like to play one of the most beautiful sounding musical instruments in the world? You should attend private violin lessons. Mary Stephenson, our violin instructor, provides 30-minute weekly lessons for adults and children. You can learn violin using the traditional method or the Suzuki method.

The lessons are tailored to the age and skill level of each student and recitals are usually held twice a year.

BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY This course is for beginner photographers.

You will walk around the Gordon State College Campus while learning the basics of taking great photographs. Bring your camera or phone and wear comfortable walking shoes. You should also bring bottled water and a bag lunch. There will be an hour break for lunch during the day.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP BOOT CAMP Have you ever wondered why your friend’s pictures look so much more professional than your own? Or, how they create their own holiday cards each year? We know their secret and soon you will, too. Our Adobe Photoshop class will teach you how to tweak your photographs, create greeting cards, collages, announcements, and more.

Basic computer skills are required. We only have one warning for this class: Photoshop is addictive and fun. You will want to make more enhanced photographs and other projects. As a participant, you will have access to a computer in one of our computer labs.

Our Basic Professional Etiquette class and our Dealing with Difficult People class teach some of the soft skills necessary to succeed in today’s business world. DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE

BASIC PROFESSIONAL ETIQUETTE

We’ve all been there – and wished we were elsewhere. Some people are just plain difficult. And we’ve tried valiantly to reason with that incredibly difficult person. It’s frustrating, maddening, and sometimes even frightening. There are proven techniques to help you manage these trying situations. This course provides both a mindset to cultivate in general and specific tactics to use during the difficult moments. Course length: 8 hours.

The lack of social skills has helped derail many careers. Professional etiquette is an unwritten code of conduct regarding the interactions among the members in a business setting. When proper professional etiquette is used, all involved can feel more comfortable, and things tend to flow more smoothly.

Your personal and professional brands are everything. Make sure your brands are polite, professional, courteous, and comply with accepted norms. Course length: 8 hours.

MICROSOFT EXCEL SERIES

Starting with Level One, This 4-hour course will provide a solid introduction for those new to spreadsheets, and for self-taught users wanting to enhance their skills with Excel. Basic PC and Windows skills are necessary but no previous spreadsheet experience required.

The Level Two course in Microsoft Excel Series, will teach you how to generate formulas, use functions, and customization to organize your worksheets. Basic Excel skills are required.

ROCK WALL CLIMBING CLASS

This fitness class is designed to help you learn to climb a rock wall. The rock is a part of the Highlander Challenge Course.

PRIMITIVE CAMPING TRIP TO SAND ROCK Join us for an overnight adventure as we climb the massive slabs of sandstone in Sand Rock, Alabama. Even without climbing gear, you can trek through the tunnels and the maze of trails. Bring your tents, hammocks, hiking and climbing gear as our guide, Andy Osborne leads us as we explore this unique spot in the South.

WELDER TECHNICIAN

Our Electrical Technician class provides you with an intensive overview of skills necessary for electrical maintenance. This program teaches you math, inspection, safety, quality, electrical systems, automation, motor controls, and assembly to work as an Electrical Technician, Electrician, and Wireman.

PE SWIM FOR HOMESCHOOL

Ages 6 - 12 In this six-week program, your children or younger students will participate in physical education that focuses on fitness, skill development, and sportsmanship. It will help to energize their body as well as their mind. This swimming class, taught by Gordon’s swim instructor Laura Huggins, will help children establish fitness habits as a natural part of their life. Students must know how to swim and space is limited so register today.

FITNESS FOR FUN: PE FOR HOMESCHOOLERS

Ages 6 - 12 This class is for children between the ages of 6 and 12. We want your children to enjoy moving around and exercising. Our instructor, Cheri Holliman, will lead them through fun activities that will keep them fit. From aerobics to yoga, your child will learn the value of exercise while taking part in a group filled with children their own ages.

No class session on Wed, April 3 due to a blood drive, so join us in donating the gift of life.

Is your child struggling with basic math, writing, or reading skills? Our tutor Katharine Whitelock, B.A. may be able to assist your child. This eight-hour math workshop is designed to prepare students to take or improve their scores on college admission tests such as the SAT and ACT. This workshop focuses on operations using fractions, decimals, and percentages. It also covers algebraic operations, Coordinate geometry, and more. Students will actively engage in solving math problems with the instructor.

Materials and websites will be distributed for extended practice beyond the workshop.

All courses and activities are scheduled for the main campus site, in Barnesville, unless noted otherwise.

Online Registration – Go to www.gordonstate.edu/commed and click on the “Registration” tab located on the top left of our web page where you will sign up and follow the instructions for class registration.

In Person Registration – Our office is located on Gordon State College’s campus at 301 Spencer Street, Barnesville, GA 30204.

Phone Registration – To register by phone, please call the Community Education office at 678-359-5123 during our business hours, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Mail in or Fax Registration – You may fax your registration forms to our office. Our fax number is 770-3585009. You may also mail your completed registration form with payment information to: Gordon State College Community Education, 419 College Drive, Barnesville, GA 30204.

Holidays – The campus will be closed on January 1-2 (New Year’s Eve), February 21 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), and March 11-15 (Spring Break).

Emergency Closing (Inclement Weather) – The decision to close Gordon State College due to inclement weather is carefully weighed before it is made. In the event the college is closed due to inclement weather we will make every effort to provide make-up sessions at the discretion of the college. Please make sure the Community Education office has your up-to-date contact information.

Student Accommodations – Students with special needs must notify the Community Education office a minimum of two business days before the course start date so appropriate accommodations can be arranged.

Refunds – In order to receive a refund for a course, students must withdraw prior to the first scheduled class meeting. Please call the Community Education office at 678-359-5123 to drop a course. There will be no refunds once a course has begun.

Parking Permits – Community Education students need parking permits for their vehicles. Parking permits will be disbursed by the Community Education office once registration is complete.

Junior Highlander Registrations (Includes all registration information above) Fees include a $50 non-refundable fee (except for swim lessons). Walk-up registrations for camps will result in an additional $25 charge. All registrations will receive a handbook via email or postal mail. The forms in the handbook will need to be completed by the parent and/or guardian, and returned to the Community Education office prior to the start of the camp(s) registered. If the required forms have not been completed and returned, the child will not be allowed to participant in the camp(s).

- There will be no refunds once the selected camp has started. If you should need to withdraw your child from the program, please notify the Community Education office at least one week prior to the start of the camp; you will be given a refund for the camp registration minus the required non-refundable deposit. If a camp is canceled by the Community Education office due to low enrollment or other reasons, you will receive a full refund, including the non-refundable deposit.
