Take your next step like a G.I.R.L. Welcome to a new year of exciting Girl Scout activities! We have added some new programming and new program partners to help every girl develop or hone skills she’ll use now and in the future. This focus on sustainability has always been at the core of the Girl Scout Movement. We want every girl to identify and utilize her leadership ability now so that, in conjunction with the skills and knowledge she gains through Girl Scouts, she’ll have a positive impact in the world throughout her lifetime. This year our programming includes archeology activities, entrepreneurial workshops, movement sessions in the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Program Center dance studio, architecture exploration, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concerts, and 100 years of women’s right to vote celebrations. For our outdoor explorers we have new programs, patches and badges -- like Take Your Best Slingshot, target sports that include throwing tomahawks and a winter outdoor challenge. And, we hope all girls (age appropriate) will make their way to Camp Conowingo to try out our new ropes course! Our STEM programming continues to expand so girls can increase their competencies in the world of technology as this will be an important part of many careers in the future. We have something to offer whether girls like designing wooden vehicles or robots, thinking like a programmer or engineer, or want to soar in the iFly wind-tunnel. We are excited for our Cyber Challenge on October 19th. Raytheon has designed an epic adventure that allows girls to put their leadership skills to the test to save the moon. I look forward to seeing you at these and other activities in the coming weeks and months. Have a great Girl Scout year! Yours in Girl Scouting,

Violet M. Apple Chief Executive Officer Join Violet M. Apple, and special guest speakers for two informative discussions designed to help girls thrive. Light fare and refreshments are included in the registration fee.

42 New Ways to be a Girl Scout

This is BIG: new Girl Scout Journeys and badges are here to take the girl leadership game to new heights. We’ve added even more skill-building, life-changing experiences to the Girl Scout program! Among the 42 new offerings are Outdoor High Adventure badges that feature, for the first time in Girl Scouts’ history, two distinct activity options, letting girls choose how they want to earn each badge. Giving girls choices is important for developing their sense of self, their own voice, and gender equality.

In addition to existing badge offerings, girls in grades 6–12 can now pursue: • Nine Cybersecurity badges. Activities range from decrypting and encrypting messages, to learning • •

proper protection methods for devices, to exploring real-world hacking scenarios (funded by Palo Alto Networks) Three Space Science badges, through which girls explore topics such as the universe and their place in it, properties of light, and inspiring careers in space science (funded by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate and led by the SETI Institute). Think Like a Citizen Scientist, a Girl Scout Leadership Journey during which girls participate in interactive activities to practice observation techniques; collect data; and share their findings with real-world scientists through an online network (funded by Johnson & Johnson and The Coca-Cola Foundation).

The new programming for girls in grades K–12 includes: • 12 Outdoor High Adventure badges, designed for girls to explore nature and experience exciting outdoor

30

adventures like backpacking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, and tree climbing—giving them the confidence to support one another, take healthy risks, and spend dedicated time in nature (funded by The North Face). 18 Coding for Good badges, which not only teach girls the basics of coding but also detail how every stage of the coding process provides girls with opportunities to use their skills for good. Girls will learn about algorithms through age-appropriate, creative activities, such as coding positive memes to spread a message about a cause they care about, designing a digital game to educate people about an issue, and developing an app to promote healthy habits. Every Coding for Good badge includes a plugged-in and unplugged version, so that all girls can learn the foundations of coding, regardless of their access to technology (funded by AT&T and Dell Technologies).
