Rob Fitzpatrick’s two-out solo home run in the top of the 13th inning broke a 2-all tie and Mike Yuro’s RBI double plating Chad Sumner added an insurance run. Scott Ryder earned his 11th win throwing four innings of perfect relief. Starter Joey Hamilton allowed nine hits, walked one and struck out four. The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead but defending national champion Wichita State tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. All-American Todd Greene cut down the Shockers’ winning run at home plate by nailing Jim Audley for the second out. The attendance was 6,481 which ranked as the largest crowd for a college game in the state of Kansas. Georgia Southern 13, South Alabama 4 Peter Bouma won his 10th game, going the distance. He allowed six hits, three walks and fanned six. The Eagles erupted for six runs in the third inning. Rob Fitzpatrick hit a 3-run homer that frame. Every starter hit safely as the Eagles pounded out 14 hits. South Alabama 3, Georgia Southern 2 Scott Ryder pitched one of his best games of the season but Southern’s bats were held in check until the ninth inning when Todd Greene hit a 2-run homer. Georgia Southern 5, UCLA 4 Steve Siebert’s RBI double in the ninth proved to be the game-winner. Chad Sumner’s 2-RBI single. The Eagles also tallied a RBI single

and squeeze bunt. Joey Hamilton won his 17th game 2.2 innings of hitless relief. Top-seeded Stanford survived an upset bid, defeating the Eagles. Rob Fitzpatrick’s sixth-inning blast, which a television replay showed cleared the left centerfield fence, was ruled a double instead of a 2-run homer. The Eagles took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th on a Cardinal throwing error. However, an Eagle error on a potential double play ball led to runners at first and second. Stanford scored one run on a sacrifice fly then the game-winner on a RBI single. The teams combined for 10 errors. Mississippi State 15, Georgia Southern 1 The Bulldogs plated 11 runs in the first inning, then cruised to a win that eliminated the Eagles. MSU scored those runs off nine hits and three Eagle errors. MSU sent 17 batters to the plate and broke College World Series record for most runs scored in the first inning and tied a CWS mark for most runs in an inning.
