PROFILE OF GREEN SAHEL AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE 1
Green Sahel and Rural Development initiative is an NGO established in 2008 with only five (5) governing members with the objectives of empowering the small scale farmers and entrepreneurs to uplift themselves to overcome poverty. It is also among its objectives to facilitate the changing or turnings Sahel zone to green land using cooperative approach. The organization started its main activities as consultants in agricultural and rural development, as well as the sell of agro inputs and later was involved in facilitation, partnering, collaboration and linkages with other organizations to conduct some outlined activities. It was formally registered as a consultative firm under the name “Green Sahel Agro Ventures” and now an NGO under the name of “Green Sahel and Rural Development Initiative”. Now we are strengthening our partnership and relationship with 2 SCALE and MIR+ projects both of IFDC, signed MoU with BMGF/ICRISAT Tropical Legumes II Project and looking forward to establishing strong business relationship with ICRISAT-HOPE Project on Striga Management and Control, Millet production and Millet product Value Chain as well as with USAID/E-ATP and CORNEL University on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) Technology. GSARDI, in partnership of IFDC 1000s+ Project, have made tremendous achievements statewide that the name “Green Sahel” is now a household name among the farmers’ organizations in the state. Among the successes are formation, development and facilitation of 5 Commodity Agribusiness Clusters in 5 different Local Government Areas of Jigawa State. Each cluster consists of different actors related to agriculture. The commodities are Millet, Rice, Sesame, Cowpea and Groundnut. In-collaboration with other partners, such as IFAD-CBARDP, Local governments etc, GSARDI have organized numerous trainings first of its kind to be organized by any Indigenous Agricultural NGO which widen the scope of the farmers and entrepreneurs on various agricultural technologies and other challenges ahead. These trainings focused on various fields of production, marketing, social and moral system. A sited example is when GSARDI trained the farmers to integrating organic and in-organic fertilizers in crop production which recorded a remarkable success (ISFM demonstrations). Other cross cutting issues, such as Gender, HIV and Sanitation, were also tried successfully to enable bridging the knowledge gaps in the rural areas. In fact, in its effort to make the commodity clusters have sense of belonging, empowered and the achievements sustained, GSARDI linked them with other important business development agencies. In fact the visits to the Agricultural Research Institutes of IITA, NCRI and LCRI were the “first of its kind ever done by farmers’ cooperative societies” as remarked by one of the Directors of the institutes (LCRI). Indeed, GSARDI success cannot be over-emphasized because apart from linking the Clusters with Scientist and Researchers to acquire knowledge, exchange ideas, some clusters were selected by the Researchers to 2
established Seed Village. As such the clusters are now using foundation and certified seeds in their production activities for their integrity and output to improved their production capacity. On the other hand, the clusters were linked with appropriate Marketers, Processing Companies, Fetiliser Companies, seeds and other Agro Input Companies, such as Dala Foods Company, Kano, NATORE Fertilizer Company, Jubaili Agro Tec, Seed Project, just to mentioned but a few, based on cluster demand. Significantly the clusters were linked with financial institution, such as NARCD Bank, for their financial commitments. In a nutshell GSARDI mobilizes, facilitates, empowers, and create awareness where the cluster members have acquired wide knowledge and experience, they now learnt how to produce, processes and sale their products using value addition technology. They learnt more on where and when to contact and how to manage their factors of production (Input, Capital, Land and Labor). They formed cluster forum where they gathered and share views and exchange ideas. These are the initials of sources of income and legal backing. Surely more are forthcoming.
