Urban Design through Transformative Systems: New York City Fall 2020 Site : Inwood, New York City Instructors : Nans Voron, Tami Bahn, Noah Chasin, Sagi Golan, Austin Sakong, Ifeoma Ebo Team : Dhania Yasmin, Luchen Liu, Wenjuan Li, Ishita Ghosh ____ The city of today that we live in migrants around the world are facing a lot of injustice such as discrimination , displacement, and unemployment. Presently, in Inwood many of the local business are struggling to keep their place due to high rent. 94% of these business are still on lease and more than half of them are owned by immigrant and woman.

Thus we imagine a flexible economic corridor under the elevated of the 10th avenue can have the potential to act like a spine, connecting the current and future neighborhood. Our goal is to create a safe corridor where minority community can have an opportunity to start new business, have a room to grow and prosper.

This is enabled by almost 500 acres of impermeable surfaces, mostly parking lots, in a city that has other dire and urgent spatial needs. Our project proposes re-purposing infrastructure that supports this lifestyle into much needed housing, open public space and energy infrastructure.

KINGSTON MAIN STREET MIDTOWN INFILL

in Ponckhockie, a space between the local church and library becomes a cooperative grocery. With the addition of new shared resources : food, energy and transportation; the community is incentivized to pivot towards walkable and more equitable neighborhoods while transforming underutilized land.

POST-INDUSTRIAL RESIDENTIAL LINCOLN PARK INFILL

To promote skill building and address issues of economic stagnation in the area, reclaimed land in this neighborhood is transformed to accommodate co-working spaces and workshops in the framework of community solar subsidies and new public transport facilities.

LOW-DENSITY RESIDENTIAL PONCKHOCKIE INFILL

The public spaces in the midtown intervention are designed to be diverse and introduce vitality to the previously underutilized land. From walkable, continuous shopping streets to semi-enclosed courtyards, the project strives to achieve sustainable neighborhoods and greater quality of living.

The ground level is dedicated to walkable commercial streets and community space while the dense affordable housing is a step in the right direction in tackling the city’s housing crisis. The MidTown project embodies the motto, “Less space for cars, more space for people”.

The Midtown project stitches the city’s grid back together and extends the greenline into a new central park for Kingston. Living within the site is incentive and enriched by community solar and access to new sustainable mobility options

Water Urbanism: Envisioning the Mississippi as a Living River Summer 2021 Site : Quad Cities, Iowa and Illinois Instructors : Kate Orff, Dilip Da Cunha, Geeta Mehta, Adriana Chavez, Justine Holzman Team:| Dhania Yasmin, Jil Shah, Chrysothemi Kouloumentas, Yoo Jin Lee ____ Tallgrass prairies, one of the diverse landscapes and ecosystems of the Upper Mississippi River Basin, functioned as an effective water holding and management system for the region. Drawing inspiration from the resilient operative notions of this native landscape, our project proposes to build an equitable and healthy way of living with water by taking Duck Creek, which traverses Scott County, as a transect.

Prior to the widespread European settlement in the region, Upper Mississippi River Basin was predominantly a confluence of diverse landscapes of Forests, Prairie grasslands, savannahs and wetlands The prairie grasslands have various ecological benefits, most notably, the ability to soak up a substantial amount of water with their long roots that seep deep into the soil. They are also a natural system which captures, slows and filters water, reducing nutrient runoff throughout the region.

Today, there are reactionary flood mitigation efforts focused along the edges of the Mississippi River, in forms of both gray infrastructure like the levees, and green infrastructure like marshlands and waterfront parks.

With the current infrastructure, if for example, the levee fails then some of the most economically vulnerable communities will be the first on the line.

This includes manufactured home park sites that are generally located near tributaries susceptible to seasonal flooding.

Flooding events are more prone in urban areas, and seem to be getting worse with the years.

We are inspired by the deep roots of the prairie grass which capture, slow and filter the water and also mediate between two conditions of high and low grounds.

Taking their characteristics and applying them to the context of the Quad Cities, we aim to restore the capacity of the land to mitigate flooding, tackle water pollution and repair soil health.

METHODOLOGY

How much distance DSNY truck travels per mile (VMT) while transferring municipal solid waste from NY Sanitation Districtts to Transfer Station?

Which sanitation districtt has the highest VMT and why?

Is the location of the current assigned transfer station associated with the highest VMT sanitation district the most efficient one?

The GHG and other harmful emission is caused due to maximum distance traveled by DSNY Trucks which is determined by the highest VMT. Hence VMT determines the emission caused per community district.

nyc waste ride GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM Fall 2020 Site : New York City Instructors : Leah Misterlin, Carsten Rodin Team : Dhania Yasmin, Ishita Ghosh ____ In New York City, we discovered that residential waste that is disposed on the streets, collected by DSNY workers and transported to transfer stations by before further separated and transported to landfills and recycling facilities. Although the sanitation department divided the collection truck by community district, the transfer station location where the waste is temporarily stored is not present in every community district. Through GIS we try investigate if the location of the current assigned transfer station associated with the highest VMT sanitation district the most efficient one.

Changing the location of Brooklyn 18 to the nearest available will result in almost 56% VMT/GHG reduction on the transfer process.

Changing the location of Manhattan 12 to the nearest available will result in almost 70% VMT/GHG reduction on the transfer process.

Although Hamilton is closer, it already have been burden with 7 other districtt thus IESI Transfer Station would be a better choice. To be able to do that both IESI Court and 50St Transfer Station need to increase their capacity as the districtt refused is the third highest inside the borough.

Action Stanley would be a better choice because WM Harlem already been burden with 12 other Bronx Districtt while WM Fairview located in Jersey.

Action Stanley would be a better choice because WM Harlem already been burden with 12 other Bronx Districtt while WM Fairview located in Jersey.

The next step to reduced the VMT/GHG is by encouraging the resident to produce less trash hence reducing the number of pick up by the DSNY truck.

Wa Team : Dhania Yasmin, Mariana Majima, Yoo Jin Lee ____ As part of the city’s path to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating effect it has had on the city’s cultural and economic ecosystems, this workshop examined the possibilities that residual space offers as usable, occupiable, and buildable space to adjacent communities, cultural institutions large and small, and to the city as a whole. Emerging from the pandemic are needs, habits, patterns and priorities that have been met with creative, provisional and improvised solutions providing clues to how residual space may be transformed into valued civic resources.
