What do we eat? Data and studies have revealed that a significant portion of us is eating unhealthy foods daily, such as processed or fast food. However, it is not necessarily our fault - people in our very own cities are suffering from the lack of access to fresh food. Public Food integrates urban agriculture and food consumption with public schools in the Lower East Side - this way, we are able to enhance the functions of existin infrastructures. Furthermore, it can also educate future generations about the benefits of healthy living, raise awareness on food insecurity, and explore possibilities of growing fresh food locally.

About 19 billion pounds of food are imported throughout New York City every year. Most of the food reaches New York City is conveyed to consumers by following the geographic distribution food business system. In this process, more than 99 percent of the food is delivered through trucks, and about 50 percent of them is imported through four bridges and two tunnels in Manhattan. This results in a limit on the amount of food transported and more than 48 percent of the food is delivered frozen or refrigerated. Finally, they reach consumers through numerous retail outlets.

Through this process, it takes about four to five days for food to be consumed on average. Although we face additional vulnerabilities if we have limited choices of where to purchase food on a daily basis. Especially, Lower East Side in Manhattan is suffering hardly with this problem as a food desert - which means we all have a hard time accessing quality and fresh food.

The proposed system begins in 3 public schools in Lower East Side, where fresh food will grow in a greenhouse located on the roof of the school’s building. This activity will be in charge of community members that are unemployed and wish to find a job and become part of the project. At the same time, kids will be receiving educational workshops and hands-on-experience activities focused on urban agriculture. The main idea would not only be that the kids learn how to cultivate, but also about the importance of a good nutrition.

In this sense, the meals prepared in the cafeteria will change incorporating fresh and healthy food meals for your kids in order not only to improve their diet, but also to create in them the habit of eating healthy.The rest of the community will be able to acquire fresh produce through different ways: either through soup kitchens, food distribution centers, farmers markets, restaurants or bodegas of the Lower East Side.

As the last step, the food waste is collected and transformed into compost, continuing with the cycle.

PS002 CURRENT The following scenario shows how our school can open its fences to neighbors as a food hub. The current PS002 is cutting off its neighbors 24 hours a day with high wire fences. However, we made a change: these fences can be open and closed through the newly designed fence. During the school time, the closed fence acts as a green wall for our kids’ safety. However, after class, fences open towards the neighbors and become a new platform for various activities such as farmers markets and food distribution.

Where the project proposes to place another option to consume the fresh food will be through our affordable restaurant working out of school’s hours in the PS184. As you can see in the image, the cafeteria will have this openable wall that integrates the interior of the building with the outside. During school hours, the walls will remain closed as we can see in the left to keep your children safe. see in the left. The profits from the restaurant will help maintain and make the system sustainable, but also will add a new familiar space to the community to go.

You will be able to join us in cooking classes, have lunch or dinner in our Soup Kitchens and if you are in a hurry, visit our Grab n Go. Plus, you will be helping our community as the food cooked in these classes will be served in our Soup Kitchen.

Food production accounts for a quarter of global carbon emissions. Conventional farming practices are not sustainable. In an effort to both curb emissions and enhance the nutritional content of produce, farms in the Hudson Valley are transitioning to the practice of regenerative farming.

This proposal aims to create a shared infrastructure for these regenerative farmers to support them economically. The location of the hub near the waterfront in Hudson will enable transport of local produce to communities up and down the river, as far as New York City. The proposed infrastructure will generate increased access to healthier and affordable options within the Hudson valley region.

While numerous efforts are made to reduce the amount of carbon emission worldwide, about 36 Billion tons of carbon is still emitted every year. Among them, 26% are food-related industry. This is because large quantities occur in through all the production, transportation, and consumption processes. In the US, it is still the second largest carbon-emitting country and 10% of total emission coming from agriculture. Especially, we recognize the seriousness of carbon emissions from the production process, which accounts for more than 60 percent of the total food industry. In this situation, we found great potential of regenerative farming and we’re trying new changes in the Hudson Valley area, where many farms are concentrated.

On the other hand regenerative farming aims to create an ecosystem. Which means no tillage. Microbes thrive in the soil and helps sequester carbon dioxide in the soil and reduced carbon emission.

U.S agriculture emitted an estimated 698 millions tons of carbon emissions during 2019. Th is is due to plowing, tillage and chemical fertilisers. Which kills the microbes in the soil and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Conventional farming processes does not involve nurturing the soil which has lead us to 75% of degraded soil.

This is a map of hudson river valley, showing a list of certified regenerative farms. Officially there are only 130 regenerative farms in New York state.

Since 98% of the farms are family owned. There is a decline in the number of farms since 2012. Especially dairy farms because of the competitive market with lowered prices of large scale industrially manufactured products.

Our project aims to help these farmers and promote regenerative farming to lower the carbon emissions and provide access to good quality produce

To achieve a greater capacity for production and processing, our intervention is placed closed to the waterfront. This site provides ample access for the public as well as farmers as we also propose farmers organization center where more understanding about regenerative system is presented. The Amtrak line that separated the site from the city, can now be utilized for tourism of the public facing regenerative farming displays. Main access for residents is created by the city renovated bridge on Ferry Street, while food industry activity is kept along Broad Street on the south.

Products are then transported to the proposed dock by small electric trucks from the processing hub, to be placed on an electric barge to connect to the rest of the region. Between this is the Dunn Warehouse has been refurbished to be used for public accessible commercial space.

Cairo is at the center of the river: not only is it at the physical confluence of three states, but it is also at the union of three rivers. However, recent events and dated controversies have caused issues in the area - it is the site of a lawsuit. A major flood occurred on the Mississippi River back in 2011 - threatening all lives in Cairo. The Army Corps of Engineers had delayed the opening of the New Madrid Floodway by a few days believing that it wasn’t necessary, but as water levels continued to rise, the levee was detonated to relieve water into the floodway. This detonation sparked a lawsuit from a century-old contract against the Army Corps of Engineers, with farmers suing them for destroying their land. Unfortunately, when we look at the bigger picture, it’s a battle of social injustice with 150 farmers against thousands of residents and a much larger ecosystem.

This event has left the region of Cairo and New Madrid Floodway is a massive site of contention. Heated arguments highlighted both sides of the story, but the social and economic damage has already been done and will continue to occur.Regardless of what type of infrastructure is in place, the decision of what and what not to protect is ultimately left in the hands of just a few people.

We can’t just have two options on the Mississippi River: floods or droughts.

In the past century when climate change was less of an issue, claiming floodways on the Mississippi River provided economic benefits. Nowadays, with water levels rising, communities are suffering from the politicized process of reopening them. During a flood in 2011, a delayed decision almost wiped Cairo off the map, destroyed frontline communities in the New Madrid Floodway, and caused 2.8 billion dollars of damage. Despite these losses, detonating levees remain as a solution for flood prevention.

What if instead we returned these floodways to the Mississippi River? Our intervention utilizes the existing levees as armatures for design operations that empower frontline communities, restore lost floodplains, and connect people through education. It reduces the political dimension for flood prevention, and allows for nature to guide our designs. We have to stop fighting against nature - let’s work with it instead.

These four design operations will respond to different areas of the existing levee.

Shaving will open the levee to the river, appropriating will change the levee around Cairo, extending will create new space linking the levees and high grounds, and finally regenerating will restore the ecological wetlands in the low grounds of the current floodway.

Instead, we can appropriate the levees and transform it into a direct connection to the New Madrid Riverway. The existing road can be used for public transportation, as well as creating new spaces that allow residents to access the waterfront.

SHAVING THE LEVEE

Instead of bombing the levee everytime water levels are high, we want to permanently make room for the river in the New Madrid Floodway.

Taking inspiration from the project “Renaturation of the River Aire” by landscape architects Superpositions, we can cut a pattern that will guide the water as it flows inwards.Then, the current levee is shaved so when water reaches a certain height, it would spill into the floodway.

To maintain accessibility, fingers will strategically extend from the levees toward the high grounds in the area. Farmers working on these elevated agricultural lands can also easily access Cairo via the levee roads, while researchers can effectively reach the lower ecological wetlands.

The low grounds become an indispensable research area for next century design. The seasonally inundated areas are perfect environments for various species, and will also allow for interactions between local communities and ecologies. This opens a window into the future where the boundaries of land and water are blurred.

This whole vision coincides with the beginning of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, where many floodplains have been lost. The proposal can continue to grow, creating an impact in the lower communities of the river, and revive the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley.
