This project is mainly aimed at the instability of NYCHA’s power

supply, bringing out people’s inequality towards NYCHA and in society.

Residents living here need stronger resilience to respond to emergencies, they need more vitality on the NYCHA campus, they need clean energy to mitigate climate change, renovate open spaces to build a strong on-site energy system. We discovered that the microgrid is extremely suitable for this particular site in order to realize the community energy wonderland.

Solar energy offers a lot of promise in this area, particularly on rooftops and in open spaces.

To satisfy emergency demands, the system would manage the power generated on-site and function independently. Harvesting energy, and hence controlling and storing it through the microgrid network, is required to establish a robust microgrid. When confronted with a flood, we use higher components to protect it. As a result, we can build structures such as pathways on campus, allowing our neighbors to use public space for a variety of activities.

This project is to examine a region through a series of systems that operate in and impact the region, allowing you to map the systems underlying our ecological footprint, histories of systemic inequities, and power. To de-construct the larger national or global systems of capital that these systems are situated in and depend upon. At the same time, spatially extends beyond the discrete site, neighborhood, city, or county to the regional, state, national, and even global scales, and crosses multiple processes and time frames.

During the pandemic period, it has strained most businesses, a sudden fall of income from unparalleled unemployment levels, the closure of physical stores, and the self-quarantine, online retails are increasing significantly.

So, today, we will be focusing on the aspect of E-commerce. Contemplating that E-commerce has been reducing the cost of purchases, leading to corporate profit growth and helping us move through the pandemic.

However, we cannot neglect its by-products.

Our project sort of introduces a extremely new type of waste collection infrastructure and primarily broadens the specifically existing recycling programs. With a focus on reuse, repair, and resource recovery education, our design in fact is not only predominantly applicable in Kingston but also certainly replicable throughout the region by in fact implementing community-engaged collection nodes anda mainly municipal distinctly central hub.

Consumption Culture

Economic growth in the US is based on a never-ending cycle of production and consumption, pushing people to buy new items instead of repairing the ones they already own. As shown in the chart, the household consumption growth in the US has been more stable than wealth growth from year to year, and never stopped increasing except for a few years after 1970.

Consumption culture led to a phenomenon where people rather buy new things than repair what they already had. The logistics, mass manufacturing, group psychology, loss of repairing skills, the price to repair, and the inconvenience to repair push people to buy more and more new stuff.

Current Waste Management

Currently, Kingston has a dual-stream recycling program that separates recyclable materials into two categories with tighter restrictions and changing demands of these materials. In addition, the recycling initiative research revealed that Kingston’s waste would be sent to a disposal site, Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA), and eventually go to landfill.

Broadened System

Knowing the absence of reuse and repair in Kingston, we propose a neighborhood-scale design to provide easy access for the residents and promote everyone’s participation. A central hub in Midtown Kingston is added to create a space that eliminates the idea of "trash" and engages residents by offering a diversified range of spaces and experiences that relate to the reuse and repurposing of "trash".

Collection Hub

The site was chosen for its central location in the city, as well as for current land use and a great number of vacant lots. It sits at the intersection of Greenline park and many commercial venues. Abandoned industrial buildings will be repurposed.

During weekdays, residents will walk to the nodes to drop off their daily wastes and get "Trading Coupons". This system of coupons will allow residents to get refurbished items in the Central Hub and encourage them to actively participate in the recycling program. The waste will be collected by category and sent directly to UCRRA.

Weekly or monthly events will be held in the node areas, so that residents can gather and bring items for repair and reuse, such as furniture, electronics, or textiles. These items will be then transported to the Central Hub for sorting, repair, and reuse.

The design connects the greenline with a shared-use path in the site. Bikers move freely and can have a visual connection with the linear park

Using a vacant building and to repurposed as a second-hand store and education pavilion with recycled materials.

During events, reuse, repair, and resource recovery education lectures and serve as a rest area during the weekday.

A Flea Market where will expand to all the open spaces during event days. Visitors will be able to repair, swap, and trade second-hand articles.

Behind the education pavilion is the second-hand store, it is also in the same renovated building. Items that are collected from the recycle-item dropoff area will be repaired and put ‘back to life’ here.

Ecology Restoration

L

ocated in the lower regions of the Mississippi Delta, The Yazoo Sponge provides an ecologically and socially driven alternative to the currently planned controversial Yazoo Pump Project. The project will cost $300 million to relieve floods for 30 farmers in the Backwater Area. The pump will also dry out 67,000 acres of wetland habitat and increase the flood risk for 31,000 residents who are already vulnerable. Our design proposes to reinvest the funding to establish a democratized diffused network of natural and nature-based features for flood mitigation. This would be a potential solution instead of the single-use infrastructure currently being considered. The goal of the project is to 1) reconnect the land to its sponge heritage and 2) create a just transition to a new sustainable economy through the restoration of wetland habitats in the backwater area. All this will be achieved through the Yazoo Sponge Alliance, a collaborative, including the US. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Audubon chapter and National Wildlife Federation. Ultimately to restore the Backwater Area’s wetland ecosystem.
