Lower Manhattan, New York Studio Critic _ Christoph Kumpusch Core I Fall 2018 In Manhattan, the presence of scaffolding is easily the most noticeable addition to the built environment. Twenty years after the passing of Local Law 11, which states that buildings with 6 stories or more need inspections every 5 years on all facades, over 190 miles of scaffolding exist in the city- enough to wrap around Manhattan 6 times. The growth of this billion dollar industry is fostered by the lack of legislation dictating the timeframe for removal. For building owners, it is financially in their best interest to leave scaffolding up between facade inspections or for future construction, meaning sidewalk sheds often outlive their necessity. For residents, these sheds have either an unremarkable presence or are an eyesore unable to be removed.

Urban Interruptions rethinks the scale that citizens can engage with built environments by appropriating the framework of scaffolding. This project initiates a catalogue of 3D printed plastic joinery to attach to existing scaffolding components that could potentially be used in both commissioned site installations and grassroots operations of public art.

This digital catalogue can be downloaded, printed and implemented by anyone. As a result, residents are encouraged to engage with their surroundings through a process that is low cost, has a low carbon footprint and can translate across multiple scales. It also aims to inspire further iterations of joinery, allowing the catalogue to grow as a reflection of residents’ needs.

Three sites were selected as representative conditions for engaging with scaffolding through this catalogue.

The first site in commercial Soho rethinks the sidewalk space defined by the overhead scaffolding canopy and the ambiguous borders of the street and building storefront. The installation extends the geometry of the arched storefront openings as vaulted projections onto the frame to intersect with delineated expressions of the street edge. These intersections allow for new moments of pause and opening within the existing frame that serve to break up the monotony and linearity of moving along the city block. Under the canopy plinth, the materiality of these fragments illuminates the shadowy interior and provides visual extensions into the street and facade.

The second site is a landscaped plaza rendered unenjoyable by scaffolding coverage. An intervention here punctures the overhead plinth to bring people up and into a new layer of occupiable space between facade and scaffold. The stair acts as a circulation baseline from which programmatic areas can extend and is deliberately depicted in an ambiguous state of completion to be developed by program.By appropriating the existing conditions to vertically create public space, the construct itself poses questions of permanence.

The third site is on the opposite end of the pedestrian passageway from Wall St Plaza and framed by commercial and residential towers.

Rethinking this urban corridor, the introduction of a meandering path through a forest of additional scaffolding columns acts as a visual and physical filter for large groups of passerby to reduce dense movement through the site and reclaim the space for local employees and residents to enjoy.

The 3D printed joints act as spacers for sections of the vaults made from dichroic vinyl melted onto thermally formed, two directionally curved plastic pieces; a fritted acrylic screen with select coutouts is held in place between two layers of vaults by the 3D printed joints. Pipe (representing scaffold frame) is bolted into a PVC sleeve cast into a concrete base. Detail is approximately 1’ x 2’ x 3’.

Public Library + Bathhouse

Lower East Side, New York City Studio Critic _ Erica Goetz Core II Spring 2019 The branch library responds to the existing separation of activities in Sara D Roosevelt park by providing an architecture that invites multiple publics to interact with one another through the combined programs of recreational bathhouse and library. The facility activates its adjacency to a busy passageway though the park by pushing program below and above ground, allowing visitors to meander through the open ground floor into the building’s three distinct entrances.

The bathhouse and library are separated by shared collective spaces and staff offices into programmatic bars, with independent circulation bringing the user up and through the “bar” of the building to experience the changing scenery of park on the library side and the urban street on the bath side.

CO(MBINED) LIVING

Bronx, New York Studio Critic _ Eric Bunge with Taylor Urbshott Core III Fall 2019 Co (mbined) Living addresses housing needs responding to two demoraphics in the Bronx - young professionals seeking options for more affordable co-living arrangements and families caring for elderly family members. Two typologies are designed to address these needs - the co-living micro unit housed in the horizontal plinth of the project, and the traditional apartment units of studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom housed in three corresponding towers around the site. Both typologies are organized around an interior courtyard - the vertical punch in the plinth and the hortizontal one in the tower. These courtyards promote shared exterior spaces at a more intimiate scale than the large public communal areas in the plinth.

A NEW ZONE FOR AGRICULTURE

Kingston, NY Studio Critic _ Nahyun Hwang with Tianyu Yang + Helen Winter ADIV Spring 2020 A new experimental campus responds to prototypical conditions of urban sprawl and addresses issues with three parallel infrastructures of agriculture: agritourism, logistics, and seasonal migrant labor. Lifted above the floodbanks of Esopus Creek, the residual space of overlapping highway infrastructure, disconnected ecological corridors, and insular human - non human communities is appropriated. Defined by the overarching grid, the new zone establishes a boundary independent of conventional zoning ordinances and legal status within which industrial, educational, agricultural, and residential uses are productive together. At 250 acres, the campus is comparable to the scale of contemporary agriculture (farms, processing plants, warehouses, research institutes) and although similar in ambition, critiques the resulting output of fragmented social infrastructures from a lineage of agricultural utopias. Designed through overlapping layers of ecological corridor, water, agriculture (farmland and greenhouse), housing, education, infrastructure, and transportation, our campus captures these intersections through a variety of hybrid typologies that address the 1) lack of a permanent community for seasonal migrant workers and their families 2) the disconnect of ecological corridors due to urban sprawl 3) unsustainable agritourism models that feed off a romanticized idea of a bucolic landscape 4) the lack of a medium entry into distribution between local CSAs and wholesale chains. By blurring the typical separation between agritourism, agriculture logistics, and migrant labor, our campus reevaluates the relationships of human-machine, humananimal, and human - human within the r(urban) context.

ACADEMY OF EXPANDED GENEALOGY

Honolulu, Hawai’i Studio Critics _ Leong Leong + Sean Connelly ADV Fall 2020 The Academy of Expanded Genealogy is a new burial for indigenous Hawaiians that will replace the existing military fort located on Waikiki Beach.

Fort Derussy is a symbol of the disinterment of buried Hawaiians from burial sites in the sand through the controversial militarization of Hawai’i.

In contrast to a more Western understanding of the value of land, Hawaiians value land as an expansion of their own genealogy. For native Hawaiians, the iwi or the human bones, are a container of a person’s spiritual power or their mana.

The Academy of Expanded Genealogy reclaims a deeply significant site to bridge continuity between the past and the present, providing a new platform for indigenous practices of burial and repatriation. Over time,the material accumulation of sand, saltwater, and wind on the building as a landform mediates this site between the adjacent urban and coastal ecosystems. The building ages, sinks, and expands alongside the genealogy of an individual and the genealogy of the ahupua’a.

PFOA ARTIC HOTEL

Artic Circle Studio Critic _ Mark Wasiuta ADVI Spring 2021 The PFOA Artic Hotel highlights Teflon’s global reach by exposing the extent of environmental proliferation from the banal domestic spaces of the everyday user to the Artic Circle. Coating everything from domestic objects like the coating pan to American cultural symbols like the spacesuits worn on the first lunar landing, Teflon has become both a chemical and cultural staple of American usage over the past 80 years. However, the offgasing of toxic chemicals that linger on the final products, most notoriously the compound PFOA, has led to environmental profileration around the world by atmospheric and ocean currents. The purity of the Artic Circle is an image that belies the environmental conditions that trap and retain these chemicals through snow and ice.

The PFOA Artic Hotel rethinks these sites of ice core drilling in the Arctic Circle as a new offering of tourism to force encounters with Arctic tourists to acknowledge their own contribution to this global proliferation and retention of Teflon in the evnironment. As a deployable system combined with snow and ice architecture, the PFOA Artic Hotel is designed as an expandable system to accomodate future sites of drilling as climate change continues to affect how and where these compounds can be observed.
