Invisible Futures is a collection of projects by brenda lim that seek to understand the trajectory and agency of architecture and the built environment in the contemporary climate.

The projects explore interests (but are not limited) in construction, envrionment, community, materiality, networks and infrastructure. The projects are a series of open-ended ambition of rethinking spatial solutions by observing invisible relationships between objects, people, time and place.

New Futures and the Wasteland is an exercise in architectural succession, wherein each built element is considerate of its own past, present and future in the timescale of toxic land remediation.

This project examines the notion of toxic land and concepts of land productivity - considering shifts in urban population and increasing demand for housing and food.

How can toxic land be rexonsidered within urban contexts to become resources and catalysts for cohabitation between people and wildlife?

This project utilizaes three different remediation strategies phytoremediation, in-situ chemical remediation and excavation - each with different social and economic consequences.

Can we maximize temporary architecture, in this case remediation structures, to become substrates for future social, natural, infrastructural environment?

In order to create conditions where both wildlife and humans exist not in opposition but a parallel manner, the concept of porosity is deployed across all scales, from the building element to urban infrastructures.

The site, which is a National Grid gas holding facility in East Williamsburg, is at risk of flooding. This amplifies that need to remediate the land in ways that respond to changing water levels, either in a preventive or opportunistic manner, that respects the relationship between the manmade and the natural environment.

In Newburgh, Broadway is treated as a supermarket of the streets where the customers are well acquainted with their local store owners. However due to inefficiencies in the food production and supply chain, Newburgh is a food desert despite being in an agriculturally rich region.

Our architecture expounds on the potential of incremental tlocal businesses through communal spaces and resources.

These hybrid spaces then form a larger 25% aggregate, using the same principles, to fulfill the communities’ social needs by expanding access to the region’s agricultural resources.

A spin on conventional courtyard housing typology that respects the courtyard as an autonomous entity - by first designing the courtyard (shared spaces), then creating residential units around the courtyards.

The urban garment district weaves together different aspects of contemporary garment making, through the insertion of armatures of different scales and programs onto our site in Sunset Park.

These armatures are not only catalysts for both mechanical and social processes in the running of a factory, but they also serve as crucial urban infrastructures for the residential and manufacturing districts of Sunset Park - forming a larger urban ecosystem.

Existing Infrastructures

A large LatinX and Chinese community that has existed in Sunset Park for the past 50 years and many of them are former garment industry workers that lost their jobs after the decline of garment businesses in the area.

The Urban Garment District also aims to bring back the garment industry in a more sustainable way. So we looked into using the product Repreve, which is a polyester material made from recycled PET bottles. SIMS recycles 6,500 tons of PET plastic per year, which is plastic that we could be using for our factory. Garment businesses in the area could also occupy our building and use Repreve in their clothing.

The armature system is a spine that integrates scale, program and networks that exist on the site. They provide infrastructural and social amenities and circulation that are vital to the production process. It is an extension of the urban streets, provided threedimensional circulation from the street level into the complex.

By using the weaving armature system to connect all the different scales of manufacturing living in our building, we’ve created a factory complex that redefines structure as bridges of interstitial spaces which allows for a more integrated manufacturing and community network.

The armatures also adapt to the change in programming, acting as the infrastructural and social nodes between buildings

A 3-week summer workshop with Material Science researcher from ETH Zurich. The mission was to test and prototype and arch 1m wide and 2m tall, that would be supported by a wall. The catch was to test ways to fabricate with a new research material made from flyash lighter but more brittle than conrete

Archaeological documentation of failures and cracks.

The experience of working with a new material was frustraing yet rewarding at the same time. Many characteristics were observed from the multiple failures.

Structural strength and balance. It was a process trying to figure out how the remaining unbroken modules would be assembled in a way that load is more evenly distributed to prevent crumbling and breakage.

Downscale. The smaller modules that were made small enough to fit in the oven were the few best pieces that came out of our experiment as they were able to fully dry.
