Entertainment as a tool to raise awareness

Advanced Architecture Design Studio: For your entertainment Pedro & Juana, TA Peter Maxwell Summer 19’

During periods of excessive rainfall and snowmelt, Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) discharge wastewater from main New York sewage pipes into the East River and Roosevelt Island, carrying not only storm water but also untreated human and industrial waste. In response, a floating device is proposed as a new filtration system.

After acting around the CSO´s and being adapted into three variations that provide activities for the public, these leisure units work as collective clusters that along with the community aim to help the restoration of the river´s ecosystem and the creation of a safe and joyful environment.

Plug-in Floating Communities A cultural network along the Hudson River

Advanced Design Studio V: Art House - Community building vPPR Architects Fall 19’

The project understands that art and artists’ communities are not static realities, they are always changing through time and adapting to new contexts, formats, ways of production and exhibition. A new plug-in floating system of living, working and leisure clusters built over obsolete barges is proposed, aiming to replace the oil trade of the Hudson River with a new network based on communal life and cultural interaction. The floating strategy allows the project to react to the most recurrent flooding due to Global Warming and permits the recovery of the river´s ecosystem.

Cultural decentralization through Archival Programs

Advanced Design Studio VI: Infrastructural Geography: water, leisure and energy policies Juan Herreros, TA Jesse McCormick Spring 20’

Centralization has been the reason of social and political unrest in the Spanish countryside for the last decades. Among different infrastructures found in our area of study, the bullring stands out as a symbol that represents both tradition and modernity, and at the same time an icon of the current isolation of the so-called “Empty Sapin�. Utilizing the repetitive and constant formal configurations and dimensions of the bullring, we propose to build a network of art archives in order to generate new opportunities in these villages.

These structures will be complemented with other social programs in order to understand the new archive typology not only as the spaces of information that it stores but as the spaces of information that is deployed.

MAKING, exploring on materiality, both as an opportunity and as a constraint. In all my 12”x12”x12” cubes, there is an intention of testing and exploring issues related to: primitiveness tectonics flexibility movement mundanity porosity fragility roughness lightness The way I have always tried to make these cubes is by being impulsive and intuitive, taking decisions in a short lapse of time.

When planning too much, I failed.
