: welcome to :danish+ 2018 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT TEATRET GRUPPE 38, BODIL ALLING

: dear guests Welcome to :DANISH+. Once again we have gathered a large handful of great and very different performances, which all have that in common that they want to matter, and move us – and delight children as well as adults. Surely our life experience is somewhat greater than that of the children we play for, but we still misunderstand the world sometimes, conclude wrongly and become unhappy and lonely and fear death in our misunderstandings and our inadequacies. We admit that in our performances – and thus children as well as adults can recognize themselves in us and in our performances.

4

Once again a bunch of wonderful and dedicated people from all over the world will visit us. They come because they know that you become happier, more open-minded, more sociable, more courageous, more reflective, wiser – and definitely more beautiful – from watching great theatre. We look forward to meet you, to watch and listen, talk and discuss, to agree and disagree – and raise glasses in the certain knowledge that life is still worth a polka. Be welcome

Bodil Alling Artistic director at Teatret Gruppe 38

: welcome to aarhus Mayor of Aarhus, Jacob Bundsgaard

As mayor, it is my great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the sixth :DANISH+ event, which presents the best of contemporary Danish performing arts for children and young people to theater professionals from around the world here in the lovely city of Aarhus. Aarhus is a historic city with roots going right back to the Viking age, but at the same time it is a vibrant modern city, where students at numerous places of education create a very special dynamic pulse. Just like :DANISH+, which is an important event in the annual Aarhus cultural calendar. As the second largest city in Denmark, with a population of over 340.000, Aarhus has everything you could wish for: Michelin-starred restaurants and tempting shops at the heart of the town, and a wide range of culture.

If you’ve visited us before, I’m sure you will notice the many changes that have taken place since the last time you were here. Aarhus is developing. More and more rapidly than ever before. And if this is your first visit to Aarhus, I hope you’ll enjoy all the city has to offer. I can only encourage you to explore our lovely city. In Denmark, Aarhus is known as the City of Smiles. I hope that your stay here will show you why. We’ve certainly been looking forward to welcoming you all. Welcome and have a pleasant stay.

Jacob Bundsgaard Mayor of Aarhus

: welcome to denmark THE DANISH MINISTER for CULTURE, mette bock

: dear visitors What a great honor it is to be able to welcome you to Denmark, and to the city of Aarhus. A great city with a vibrant cultural scene and I’m proud to say – one of many in Denmark. Many of you have travelled a long way to visit :DANISH+. I am convinced that this can be attributed to the insisting aspiration of Danish Performing Arts for children and young people to keep seeking and challenging new ways of developing and refining this artform, thereby making it internationally relevant and interesting. You are all here to see and experience Danish performing arts for young audiences. This showcase is a great venue for the Danish Performing Arts for children and young people to show of what Danish artists are capable of. 6

When seeing the performances, you will get a picture of a segment of Danish artists that are extraordinarily brave and always take their audience seriously. Shows with high artistic quality performed at eye height are the trade mark. Something that I as minister for culture am very proud of. I am sure that you will have many fruitful dialogues and will benefit from visiting :DANISH+. Hopefully through inviting the Danish performing artists to your countries and to your festivals, but also from meeting international colleagues from Denmark and from around the world. I hope you will feel free and inspired to engage in various dialogues and hopefully future collaborations – in- and outside of the scope of this showcase. It is through meetings and showcases like this that we enhance the international under-

standing of our individual arts & culture. We are able to experience the feeling of understanding and being engaged in a performance from a whole different cultural perspective, reflecting in it, feelings that are universal – which speaks to all of us. That is so important, and that is what the world of arts and culture is capable of doing. Welcome to the sixth edition of :DANISH+. Welcome to Aarhus and welcome to Denmark.

Mette Bock Minister for Culture

: About the performance

: About teatret gruppe 38

A 20 years anniversary

Teatret Gruppe 38 is a prizewinning theatre located in the city of Aarhus, Denmark and led by the Artistic Director, writer and actress Bodil Alling.

Now, listen to me! We have to do something! We will die from hunger! Tomorrow we will give the children a piece of bread and take them into the forest. We will light a fire, then we will go away and leave them behind. J. Grimm

The theatre strives to create intimate, thoughtful and poetic theatre, for children and adults. Teatret Gruppe 38 also organizes and co-organizes a number of festivals and biennales – including :DANISH+.

The wonderful thing about fairytales is that they are entertaining as well as useful. They are incredible stories about fighting against life’s difficulties, about distinguishing between good and evil and about sorting out all those confusing impressions that reality offers.

: About the performance

: About teater v

Meaningful Danish theatre about the threat of nothingness ...

Teater V in Valby, Copenhagen is a small but active theatre, producing new Danish drama every year.

One day Pierre-Anthon climbs up in a tree and stays there. From there he shouts to his classmates: “Nothing means anything – therefore there is no reason to do anything”. His classmate decides to prove him wrong and starts to find things that matters to them. Everyone has to contribute and the more painful their sacrifices are, the more important is it, right?

The main purpose is to present relevant theatre for the young, teenagers, adults and elderly people. Every season the theatre has between 15-17 different shows, guest plays and international visits.

Teater V presents Pelle Koppel’s critically acclaimed stage version of Janne Teller’s award-winning, existential young adult novel about 13-year-old Pierre-Anthon who one day declares that there is no meaning to life.

: About the performance

: About kulturmarkt

A comedy about becoming oneself

Kulturmarkt is created to add what is not already there. They produce theatre-, comedy- and magic shows – all build on the basis of a good story.

An actress and her part must perform an important scene together. But not everything goes as planned. The actress is overwhelmed with anxiety and the part must take over. The part realises that it likes the spotlight and the actress must fight to reclaim the stage and stand up for herself. Maybe that was the parts plan all along? The Comical Tragedy is about the fear of failing and the road toward daring to do what you really dream about. It is a story about becoming oneself and listen to that little voice inside that sometimes speaks the truth.

: About the performance Melodramatic Silent Cinematic Theatre: Aarhus, 1910 – the Golden Age of Danish Silent Cinema. Where heroes are heroes and villains are really not very nice. A plucky little film company struggles to finish their masterpiece. This will surely be their breakthrough, especially for the young heroine, Asti. The revolutionary invention has created a world of hope and inspiration, where talents are born and where each day brings new wonders. But cheating, sabotage and other villainy is the order of the day in the competition between aspiring companies, and Asti soon finds herself caught in a web of lies and hidden motives which will test her loyalty, friendship and even love.

Who is the villain and who’s the hero, when the camera stops running? In Teatret Thalias Tjenere’s wild, visual, comic mask universe, we travel back to the time when Aarhus’ streets were whirring with movie cameras – before Hollywood was invented. It’s funny. Surprising. And for the whole family!

: About teatret thalias tjenere Since 1996, Teatret Thalias Tjenere has produced original work using masks of all sorts. Often without words, their ensemblecreated, layered performances aim to engage and challenge the young, while speaking to the child in the adult.

32

: About the performance

: About randers egnsteater

Palle alone in the world is a performance which puts focus on the eternal issue of the big difference of being alone and being lonely. Sometimes the world is unfriendly. Everything that surrounds you is stupid and unfair right from you wake up in the morning. You could allow yourself to wish that both the harsh mother, the malicious dog that lives upstairs, and the classmates were not there. What if you were alone in the world and could decide everything yourself? That would be amazing! On the other hand, would it?

Randers EgnsTeater is a regional theatre, with a long history. The theatre’s primary function is to produce high quality theatre for children and young people. The theatre is touring in Denmark and the rest of the world.

We follow the boy Palle when one day he wakes up and discovers that he is the only person in the world. With all the opportunities and challenges it provides. Now he can drive a fire truck, fly an airplane, eat delicious cakes from the bakery shop, and even get the whole playground for himself. However, something is still missing – and it is just more fun to play when you have friends.

: About the performance Brand new performance! Premiered February 2018 The sailors: Please believe us when we say: We didn’t do it out of evil. The sea was calling us, and the birds cried Out! Out! We turned our back to our sick and their bloody cough in sweaty handkerchiefs. We ran from bread and water, reproachful stares, the clock on the wall, the black fields, the roaring priests, the fat bellies in the provinces ... We were drawn to the harbours, towards the ships yearningly, creaking, waiting for us to get onboard ... we had no idea what lay ahead ... The Danes have travelled the world, inquisitive and seduced by the exotic, and greedy for riches. Through centuries, sugar has flowed from the West Indian colonies to Copenhagen. In 1878 the biggest labor revolt breaks lose in St. Croix and is never recorded in the Danish history books. Why?

Sugar is the first part of the trilogy: A nations self-hatred – Denmark between shame and self-overestimation, about how the Danes view themselves through the last 300 years. Second part will be called Salt. The third part Knock, knock, knock! Who´s there? In 2020 the trilogy is gathered in one big performance.

: About the performance Sara is a normal 16-year-old Danish girl. She lives with her parents and spends her time on school, friends and choir practice. One morning Sara awakes and discovers that she now speaks Arabic, and only Arabic. She still thinks in Danish and only understand Danish, but the words coming out of her mouth, are suddenly Arabic.

Habibi is a modern fairy tale about identity, differences and fear. About what happens when fear moves into society, into families and all the way into the individual. Habibi won the Danish Playwright Associations award for Best Children- and Youth Manuscript in 2017.

: About opgang2 turnéteater That is not normal! That is strange and inexplicable. What is going on? All the people she loves become scared of her. Who is Sara? Has she become radicalized? Is she a spy? Has she secretly converted to Islam? Is she just a wanna-be Arab or does she merely crave attention? All of a sudden, Sara is a stranger in her own life. Everything is out of control and she no longer has anything to lose.

Opgang2 Turnéteater was started in 2001 and tours Denmark with theatre that inspires dialogue and debate about ethnic and cultural differences. Every year Opgang2 perform between 150 and 200 times and annually premieres a new play at Aarhus Teater.

: About teater patrasket

Poetic puppet theater drama!

Teater Patrasket is a well-known traveling theatre from Copenhagen, who make theatre for children and other human beings.

Arthur and Marta are two very old puppeteers, who have been together most of their lives. With a magical pavilion as a focal point, they play the story of the poor orphan boy Max, who’s biggest dream is to fly. But being completely alone in the world, Max experiences nothing but humiliation and exploitation. Until he meets the giraffe woman Lily – and the great love that might give him wings ...

A theatre based on playfulness, physicality, visuality and appealing stories – that wishes to deal with the important issues of life through empathy and a gentle touch of humor.

The performance is created in collaboration with director Giacomo Ravicchio and draws on inspirations from melodrama, freak show and circus romance.

: About teater my

When I think about my day, I remember everything. Because I am me, and inside my head is everything, that I did today. My eyes have seen so many things. My ears have heard so many sounds. Music too. I talk with myself, and everything I say, is something I decided. From the edge of my bed, I can gaze at my entire world. At everyone I know. Tomorrow when I open my eyes I’ll see you. And if you ask, if you can come in here to me I’ll say yes.

Award-winning Teater My aims to create a calm and peaceful experience embracing the very little ones. The productions possess a rare ability to generate a warm atmosphere of poetic and reflective moments. Teater My creates a secure relatable environment, where the simple exciting stories and images are given space to come into existence.

It is time to fall asleep. From the bedside we glance out of the window looking at the moon and the sky lit by stars. The house is full of sounds, and the mind is full of thoughts. Right here the story begins ...

: About the performance

: About teatergruppen batida

The conductor is waiting impatiently. But the members of The Sweet Seven Magic Orchestra call one after the other to say they can’t make it to the concert. Initially despairing, he decides to make the most of a hopeless situation: He will instead play his secretly composed Solo Trumpet Concerto which undoubtedly will make his fame.

A vibrant and colourful ensemble of musical actors, Teatergruppen Batida has developed it’s very own unique and interacting theatrical style and has over time created a wide range of shows, addressing all age groups – adults included.

Just as he is about to begin, one final band member shows up; the most untalented and hopeless musician who thinks of nothing but football. This can only end in disaster ... and it does! However, it comes to show that the two musicians have more in common than first expected – especially a very unusual song from the small town of Libovich!

The shows are performed at Batida‘s own theatre – a converted factory building in Copenhagen – as well as on tour anywhere in the world where they may find an audience. Batida has toured in more than 45 different countries.
