GROUNDSWELL ANNUAL REPORT

01

Groundswell brings together artists, youth, and community organizations to use art as a tool for social change, for a more just and equitable world. Our projects beautify neighborhoods, engage youth in societal and personal transformation, and give expression to ideas and perspectives that are underrepresented in the public dialogue.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR This year was a landmark for Groundswell as we celebrated our twentieth anniversary as New York City’s premier mural-making organization. I am inspired by how two decades of dedication have led to our most productive year ever with fifty-five works of public art completed, involving hundreds of youth, artists, community members, and supporters like you. Our increased capacity amplified Groundswell’s ability to make change, as I saw exemplified by last year’s monumental fifteen-mural “Public Art / Public Housing” Initiative. The Initiative offered a platform for youth to engage their communities in envisioning a new future and identity for public housing residents. “Public Art / Public Housing” demonstrated how the seemingly distinct priorities of art, public housing, and Groundswell’s youth and community development models can be aligned to support long-term change in our neighborhoods. As Groundswell grows, I am thrilled to welcome Robyne Walker Murphy as Groundswell’s new Executive Director. I am confident that Robyne’s vision will lead Groundswell to further excellence as we begin our third decade of transforming communities through public art and public discourse. SINCERELY, NAZLI PARVIZI BOARD CHAIR

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Mobilized by national conversations on youth leadership, public safety, and social inequities, the youth artists behind every Groundswell project bring key community issues to life through the mural-making process. I have long respected Groundswell’s collaborative artmaking process, and I am honored and excited to now take the helm of this nationally-recognized organization committed to using art as a tool for social change. This position gives me the opportunity to engage with all of my passions: youth, community, artists, artistry, and social justice. I want to thank the board, staff, artists, and supporters who make Groundwell’s successful operation possible. I look forward to honoring the legacy of this community through the creation of a strategic plan. A strategic plan is a tremendous opportunity to celebrate where we have come as a community, and then envision where we are going in the future. As we enter Groundswell’s third decade, I look forward to how we can continue to best serve our constituents by using art to create a more just and equitable world. YOUTH

“In my college applications, my Groundswell experience really set me apart from other candidates who probably just drew from still lives, but didn’t have the best understanding of the field choice. I have a strong vision of what it takes to follow a career in art before the degree is even in my hands.” Publio Lantigua, youth artist on eleven projects who now attends LaGuardia Community College.

Youth are front and center to each of Groundswell’s public art programs. Groundswell’s programs use artmaking and mentorship to develop critical creative and leadership skills in youth who face obstacles to success in their lives, empowering them to become informed advocates for social change and to become leaders in their communities.

KNOWING THE POWER WITHIN OURSELVES A MAKING HIS’TORY TRIUMPH Making His’tory is a leadership development program for exceptional young men, some of whom have a history in the juvenile justice system. With an approach centered on personal narratives and storytelling, the Making His’tory team challenged notions of identity to break cycles of inequity facing young men of color today. Their mural, entitled “The Fall of Oppression,” depicts young men of color impacted by internalized injustice as they realize their potential as empowered community leaders. Inspired by Diego Rivera’s mural, “Man at the Crossroads,” the young men structured the mural in an arc of transformation, a process mirrored in the youth artists. “I had a huge change in mindset this summer,” said youth artist Kamal James about his transformation. “Working with my peers/brothers this summer has been an invaluable experience. I learned to appreciate the difference I have with others and channel a better vibe into my daily activities. Painting ‘The Fall of Oppression’ helped me redirect my emotions of being a man of color into something more powerful and beautiful. Thanks to Groundswell and the teaching artists Raúl and Ashton, I’ve learned to be more tolerant of others and understanding in uncomfortable situations. I carry a lighter bag now.” 09

OUR LEGACY STARTS WITH STRONG ROOTS

SPOTLIGHT ON VOICES HER’D Voices Her’d is a work skills program for young women who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to social justice and a potential for leadership. The Voices Her’d team illuminated and celebrated the power of women of color in Crown Heights through their mural, entitled “Passing Wisdom, Planting Seeds.” The youth artists investigated and elevated perceptions of women of color’s self-worth in order to challenge how racism and sexism impact contemporary culture. The team was inspired by the community leadership of the mural site, Mama Dee’s Community Garden. Women, young and old, are shown together in this mural to illustrate their force as the foundation of their communities. Symbols of figurative, architectural, spiritual, political, and natural importance to women of color gesture to the complexity of individual and communal identity. “This mural has given me the confidence to project my thoughts to a wider, more public audience. It is my hope that ‘Passing Wisdom, Planting Seeds,’ and all the work that I put into this mural, will support social justice for years to come,” said Voices Her’d participant Lydia-Rose Aigbedion. FIVE COMMUNITIES, ONE CITY TRANSFORMED

PUBLIC ART / PUBLIC HOUSING In 2016, Groundswell teamed up with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and New York Council Committee on Public Housing Chair, Ritchie Torres, to present “Public Art / Public Housing.” This mural initiative brought together youth, teaching artists, and community leaders to co-create fifteen murals at five NYCHA public housing developments. This collaboration celebrated the stories, hidden treasures, and imaginations of NYCHA residents by activating their communities as sites of dialogue through public art. Groundswell employed 200 NYCHA resident youth to use art as a tool for social change by cultivating stewardship of public space, community asset mapping, and the collaborative mural-making process. The artist teams illustrated a shared vision of revitalized communities by tackling a diverse array of pressing issues, including promoting holistic wellness, bridging the intergenerational divide, and ending gun violence. On the opposing page, details from all fifteen murals represent the work completed at the Tompkins, Queensbridge, Saint Nicholas, Castle Hill, and Stapleton developments (grouped vertically, named left to right). 13

“These murals have uplifted the whole community and deeply engaged young people who worked diligently for six months to better this housing development. They became part of something that will last for a long time.” Tenant Association Leader Geraldine Lamb on the murals created at Castle Hill Houses. As she described in an interview with the New York Times, at first she resisted the Initiative but soon became one of our greatest supporters.

Groundswell artists use art as a tool for social change through the creation of high-caliber, site-specific, collaborative works of public art. Our collection of public art honors the practices of Los Tres Maestros (Great Three Muralists) – Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros – while pushing forward the legacy of the community muralism movement. This year, Groundswell artists transformed blank walls into sites of dialogue in over thirty New York City neighborhoods.

A DIVERSITY OF TALENT ARTISTS AS INNOVATORS Leading every one of Groundswell’s murals are skilled teaching artists who bring youth imaginations to life through striking designs. Research, design, fabricate, celebrate: each Groundswell project follows a collaborative mural-making process perfected over twenty years. In 2016, our cohort of over three dozen artists used this collaborative model to create visions of restorative futures. Their unique styles yielded moments of beauty, healing, and social change. Groundswell has drawn together a network of skilled artists. This community of artists inspires personal, creative, and professional growth. Artist Marina Perez-Wong attests, “I am always pushing my personal practice to discover new elements, and I now look to other Groundswell artists to incorporate some of their ideas and styles into my own work.” ART
