Larus Design Urbano Facilities The present building includes the manufacturing facility and all the services related to it: management, design, sales department, manufacturing department, etc. We are planning to extend our facilities, giving greater importance to management and social department, as well as the project team. Thus, considering that innovation is the key factor in our development, it contributes to strengthen our position on the market. Larus is also planning to build a design museum, an auditorium with educational purposes, a showroom, an area for temporary thematic exhibitions, and so on. Projected by Jorge Trindade.
CULTURE
PHILOSOPHY AND VALUES
LOGO
The company culture is a set of values and principles, which inspire and influence the collaborators and employees in their day-to-day habits and practices. Frequently, they stem from the values set by our founder, although, when the employees - its main asset – get deep into the company, they encourage new procedures to improve its operations and results, inspiring a philosophy that sets it apart from its rivals, creating sustainable competitive advantages. It is a dynamic, evolutionary, participating process, which proactively develops autonomy and responsibility in its members, as an immediate result of being a company dedicated to investigation and development.
Larus’ philosophy is displayed in the image of the company, in the logo and its use on the uniforms, in the indoor and outdoor decoration, in the language, in the calm and informal relationship between employees and with the clients, in the concern about meeting our customers’ needs, and, in an original way, in the relationship with external authors who were invited to plant the tree curtain that surrounds the facilities, thus encouraging loyalty to the company.
The seagull, included in the logo, is characteristic of the Aveiro region, and is in the origin of the company’s name.
This reflects the whole responsibility that guides Larus philosophy: beyond all the management skills, a solid sense of understanding and human comprehension, is permanently demanded.
www.larus.pt | +351 234 520 600
Larus means seagull in Latin and reflects a message of freedom (creative ability), balance (between the company’s goals, customer and employee satisfaction and sustainable development) and environmental awareness (ecological concerns, material rationalisation and productive processes, framing of its facilities within the landscape and product suitability to the open spaces they are aimed at).

“A sense of collection between different pieces, through a constructive concept: a common structural element evocative of a precise conceptual universe, that supports each functional performance. Neutral, humble and discreet, with objects that do not contaminate space, to the extent that public space is not built on furniture, which must be contained and have the capacity to not erase all else surrounding it.” João Nunes

IP6 bench design Jesús Irisarri | Piñera “The design comes from territories outside the concept of furniture. The idea is to design a mechanism that generates a meeting space, a central point to be in group. Rather than proposing a particular use, it opens up a range of possible uses, different ways of being, bound and generated from the relationships established between users. Thus, the way to sit, rest or lie down will depend on the number and disposal of the group of people that converge to the equipment.” Jesús Irisarri

Rua line design J.M.Carvalho Araújo “Streets, squares and public gardens should be a big living room, comfortably furnished. The urban furniture should be stable, firm, oriented, resistant to vandalism, reparable and adaptable to its users. Preferably, it should not retain rain water, being able to dry fast. In addition, it should not have a superfluous exposure in order to respect the surrounding. A simple design could be the correct answer, with a neat and vigorous design susceptible of further adaptations, using different acces¬sories, to other situations without ever losing its identity.” J. Axis line design Pedro Martins Pereira | Larus The Axis bench was developed with an ergonomic seating line. Its seating surface is of Tali, wood of high density. It is protected with a non toxic varnish and attached to a support leg which is fixed to the ground and made of Euronorm cast iron 1561:19997, metallized and painted. The resistant axial leg allows us to obtain a simple design, of easy integration in historical or contemporary, urban or rural environments. The other elements of this line follow the same principle of depurated forms.

Comendador line design Daciano da Costa Using elements that recur in the shapes of the pieces, that for decades made Alba Factories a recognized name, Daciano da Costa designed this urban furniture line, named after the founder of this company, Augusto Martins Pereira, one of the anonymous artists who designed the cultural identity with which we identify ourselves. Benches, public lighting, fire hydrants and pieces that he designed for his home, such as banisters, lamp holders, doors and trims, repeating vertical and horizontal lines, were the references for the “Comendador Line.

Daciano da Costa line design Daciano da Costa References were the historical components, of an austere design, of the city and work of Jorge Vieira (1926-1998), “a sculptor of popular Mediterranean expression, figurativeabstractionist, who violently deconstructed the human figure”, to quote the words of Prof. Daciano, who has named this a “design of citation”, because of the recurrence of materials and technical solutions used by his friend: the corten steel and the pieces supported by T-shapes, thus suggesting the three support points.

Cais line design Pedro Martins Pereira When thinking of the pier [Cais], one is reminded of sheltered vessels, of forgotten, entwined or stressed cables moored to cast iron bollards, that resist the corrosion of the maritime environment with a enduring stubbornness. The Cais Line takes inspiration from these elements; in the enjoyment of seaside promenades.

Embondeiro Line design Pedro Martins Pereira Angola. Savannah. The playful, grotesque and surprising physiognomy of the secular baobab tree, is distinguished within this lonely and warm wilderness. The historical and cultural reference intervened in the street furniture project, strengthening its local identity. The cast iron, a noble material, gives body to the trunk and the branches of the tree, which support the slats of the park benches. The timber used is autochthonous. The bollards, in cast iron for the same reason, suggest the trunk, but more elegant. They also served as support to the paper bin, of considerable dimensions, as is local practice, whose basket is produced in metalized and painted steel, galvanized steel or stainless steel.

17Âş lighting pole design Francisco ProvidĂŞncia The inclined angle unites the components of this light: the vertical elevation of the pole and the horizontal projection arm. Inside the tube of the lamp, there is an almost vertical projection of light. The cut in the tube shows the intersection between the cylinder and the illumination cone. Maintenance is made easy, thanks to its upper access. The brief and easily recycled concept, inspires a quality of life reduced to essentials, to life in freedom.

Containerized cafeteria / bar serving as support to the river-tour pier of Entre-os-Rios.
Resulting from the transformation and modernization of a degraded historic centre. An ambitious project was undertaken for the pedestrianization and removal of road traffic. The redesigning of the park led to it being occupied by several public facilities, allowing for new commercial and recreational uses, respecting the older building structures and introducing an impressive new structure, large in size but nevertheless gracious, thus conferring a modern look to the older styles.
On the coastal slope of Almada, facing the city of Lisbon, a terrace bar was built, allowing for the enjoyment of the Tagus river and the capital city views. Using copper sheets around the ledges.

Outdoor Check-Up Tracks Iberian artistry, Dr. António Lúcio Baptista design Larus, Marta Afonso Based on the concept of “Self-Assessment”, “Check Up Tracks” were designed to be mainly developed in municipal structures already in place, with pedestrian footpaths that serve the local population. In the designated areas 12 billboards are placed along a training circuit already indicated through complementary directional signposts. Along the way, the park users are encouraged to perform a series of physical tests which will help alert them or make them aware of various health related issues. All of the readings are then recorded onto a sheet of copy paper which is delivered to the users and which they may use as reference in the future. A copy of this sheet may also be left at the park enabling the undertaking of studies and statistics regarding the general health of the local population. Before starting their pedestrian circuit, users are referred to the “Check up Centre”, an indoor area, where they may find a series of medical equipment and informational boards. After undertaking the various assessments available there, they should go outdoors again so they may start the circuit.

STEEL / STAINLESS STEEL
Steel is an alloy combining iron and carbon, with a maximum carbon content of approx. 2.1%. The non-alloy steel with low carbon content (<0.3%), has a high ductility and good characteristics for the mechanical work and welding, being the structural steel used by Larus (EN10025). Steels with a high content of alloying elements, such as stainless steel, contain at least 11% of chromium, ensuring a high resistance against corrosion, forming a thin adhesive film, which protects the material from corrosive attacks in contact with water or moist air. With the appropriate additions of chromium, nickel and molybdenum, it is possible to obtain alloys particularly suited to be used in saline or acidic environments (AISI 316), being the stainless steel adopted by Larus.
CAST IRON
Cast iron is a ferrous alloy with a carbon content higher than 2%. The lamellar gray cast iron (because it has a grey fracture surface, due to the presence of graphite in the form of flakes) solidifies in a stable way, as a result of a chemical composition within certain parameters, such as high levels of carbon and silicon and of slow cooling laws. This alloy has a high capacity for vibration damping, high aptitude for machining, facilitated by the graphite flakes which have a lubricating function, good corrosion resistance in many common environments (greater than carbon and steel) and a reduced contraction of metal associated with good fluidity that facilitates the casting of complex parts produced by Larus. lamellar
METALLIZATION
Protection of a surface, that consists on the projection of zinc or of a zinc / aluminum alloy (85% Zn – 15% Al), melting and projecting the metal wires with a gas (O2 propane or O2 acetylene) or electric pistol. To be durable, allowing the proper adhesion of the metallization, a careful preparation of the surface of the metal piece is required, to achieve the degreasing, the deoxidation and the necessary roughness of the metal. An abrasive jet of shot blasting SA 2.5 - 3 SA is used (dry compressed air projection – dry and oil-less – or through turbines) The thickness of the zinc layer comes from the mechanical deposit of zinc particles in the roughness of the support, obtained by successive passages until a minimum thickness of 30-40 microns is reached.
nodular
ACETYLENE PROPANE OXIGEN
Nodular or spheroidal cast iron is obtained by the liquid bath treatment, with the introduction of a small addition of alloying elements (inoculants). The graphite precipitates, not in the form of flakes, but in the form of nodules or spheres, improving substantially its mechanical properties, which approaches it to steel in ductility and tensile strength, being used by Larus particular situations.

Painting on metallization The roughness of the surface favors the perfect adhesion of subsequent paintings: - A first layer using very diluted ink (+ or 30%), applied a maximum of 40 hours after metallization; - Following layers, finishing or intermediate, can be applied immediately after. Advantagens: - Long lasting protection against corrosion, with an excellent abrasion resistance, which limits the frequency and cost of the maintenance and the assembly of metallic structures, by adjusting the thickness of the coating, depending on the aggressiveness of the environment. - It is an ideal surface for subsequent application of painting (first layer and finishing). - No change of the mechanical properties. Disadvantages: - The interior areas of pieces are not protected.

GALVANIZATION
Protection of the surface, obtained by the immersion in a bath of liquid zinc (min 98% of pure zinc) at about 450 째C. The parts are immersed long enough to reach the bath temperature and then are slowly withdrawn.
WOODS
Wood is one of the most important building materials and requires an energy comsumption for its production (5 to 7.5 KWH / Ton) much lower than other materials (concrete 25 to 300; glass 6000, plastic 8200 to 20.000, aluminum 72.000). It is also the only renewable building material and neutral regarding the CO2 emission. In several conditions it is essential to use protective measures:
The zinc metallurgically reacts with the metal surface of the piece, forming a zinc/iron alloy whose chemical composition varies from 25% Zn - 75% Fe at the base, up to 100% Zn at the surface. The thickness of the zinc layer obtained is at least 60 microns.
- In contact with ground water, or soaked, the wood may be attacked by fungi; - In environments of low oxygen content, the wood may be attacked by bacteria; - Used outdoors, it is susceptible of having cracks caused by the absorption of water; - Subject to the action of UV rays, lignin, a component of the wood, rots. Thus, for each use it is necessary to apply the woods with the most recommended features, as well as to employ preserving treatments.
Cells
Green wood (over 30% of water)
Wood at the point of saturation of fiber (about 30% of water)
Absolutely dry wood
A living tree has a water content of above 40%. After slaughter, the water content decreases. At first, the free water evaporates, until reaching the saturation point of the fibers. Here, the remaining water is retained in the cell walls and its content is around 30%, depending on the temperature. If the wood dries below the saturation point of the fiber, it shrinks, but it swells again if it is moistened. Contraction by drying

The preparation of the surface of the metal piece is of paramount importance. It is applied the same method used to prepare surfaces for metallization. Painting on galvanization The surface is phosphatized after a slight abrasive blasting. The Phosphatizing creates a crystalline surface of phosphates with an appropriate roughness to maximize the adhesion between the ink and the zinc layer. Advantagens: - As galvanization involves the total immersion of the piece, all the surfaces are coated. Even the inside of tubes or hollow parts. - The thickness of the coating is fairly uniform, ensuring protection in critical areas such as edges and corners. Disadvantages: - The surface may present runoff of the zinc bath.

The lighter and softer species have simpler construction than the harder and denser species. The shape, the constitution and size of the cells of the tree determine the nature and the properties of the wood. The cells of the inner layers are no longer alive and are usually darker, due to the formation of resin and oxides that provide natural protection. These cells are closed to fluid transport. Usually this is the most durable and less subject to water penetration area. Thus, the protective measures are specifically targeted to the outer layers.
The contraction of the wood is very different depending on the direction: - The tangential contraction is about twice the radial contraction; - The axial (length of the torus) contraction is very low, not relevant. Dense woods have a greater contraction than the light ones. The wood should be dried out before use (until the characteristic content moisture of the application area).
FINISHING - PAINT
Cracks and warping
Protective varnish
When hitting one side of the timber, the sun and wind remove the surface water. The water in the interior will come to the surface at a speed slower than its removal from the surface. The peripheral layers (more dry) shrink more than the inner layers (more humid), creating internal tensions that are relieved with the opening of cracks that soften when the external humidity increases.
The action of the U.V. rays causes the degradation of lignin, favoring its decay to a thickness that varies between 1mm and 2mm. For a better protection, the varnish used by Larus has iron oxides and other components that, working as lamellae parallel to timber surface, promote the reflection of the U.V. rays. The greater the number of varnish applications is, the greater the UV protection would be. However, it darkens the color of the wood.
Liquid paint - Enamel Forge On the primary is applied metal enamel with high anticorrosive power and weather resistance. It gives the appearance of wrought iron, with a color formulated for Larus. Liquid Paint – Epoxy If we need higher durability, hardness and resistance while maintaining the look of wrought iron, we apply multifunctional epoxy iron oxide paint.
The wooden slats found in furniture are protected by non-toxic varnish (aqueous solvent) that is particularly suitable for the use of children.
In the case of a board, the warping is caused by the contraction of the layers under the sun and wind effect, in opposition to the opposite side, that doesn´t contract in the same way and is unable to completely counteract this effort. Therefore the use of wide boards should be avoided.
The initial protection, carried out in the factory, includes the application by immersion of a wood filler that, in addition to improve the U.V. protection, promotes the adhesion of resin to wood, followed by a minimum of two varnish coats without sanding between coats. Maintenance of Wooden Slats The wooden slats require maintenance that depends on the environment where the equipment is installed: Liquid Paint - Synthetic Enamel - Sanding the wooden slats individually, preferably after cleaning the layer that contains decomposed lignin (if this has already occurred). The wooden slats must be sanded to remove any remaining varnish and prepare them for the varnish, which will provide the necessary protection. - Apply at least two coats of non-toxic varnish (which may be provided by Larus), without sanding between coats.
The wood cracks the most the lower its density is, because there are more empty spaces between the cells occupied by air. The wood most used by Larus in its furniture lines is Tali. This is an exotic wood from Central Africa which, therefore, is not subject to the action of European agents such as worms, fungi, wood decay, etc. Due to its high density (900 kg/m3), it is very resistant to water penetration and thus to the consequences that affect more severely the less dense woods.
The regularity of maintenance depends on the environment in which the wooden slats are installed. In a place with natural environmental aggressiveness, it is recommended that the maintenance is performed within two-year intervals, when the wooden slats begin to show some wear. This time period should be reduced with the increasing aggressiveness of the environment. With a greater number of varnish coats, we enlarge the time period between maintenance.

It is an alkyd, solvent, bright, used for the painting of steel structures. It has good gloss retention. Liquid paint - Polyurethane Enamel With high brightness, is used in the painting of metal structures. It has high gloss retention and risk resistance. It has an excellent adhesion to iron and wood. It reveals high resistance in corrosive environments. Dry Paint - Electrostatic powder coating Without solvents, this paint is used in dry powder. The powder receives a positive electric charge making it electrostatically attracted by the piece. It is cured under heat at 200 ° C. During this process the powder melts into a uniform film which, that after cooling, results in a uniform coating with excellent finishing. This process presents excellent adhesion characteristics, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance. It is an environmentally friendly process because it contains no solvents, non-emitting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere.
ROTOMOLDING
ELECTRICITY
Kiosks and Terraces Protection of People The protection against electric shock and direct and indirect contact must be ensured, guaranteeing the extinction of defects within the established maximum times (according to the Technical Rules of Low Voltage Electrical Installations). In the use of TT system (neutral earthed and earthed mass), protection against electric shock requires the implementation of security measures. In the case of direct contacts, is used the isolation of the active parts or equipments with enclosure IP code equal or superior than IP2X (when it isn’t possible to isolate the active parts). In addition, high sensitivity differential devices are installed (I n<30mA). In the case of indirect contacts, differential devices are used with sensitivity according to the circuit to be protected conditions (humidity, type of users). Since there are several metal masses accessible simultaneously (kitchens) it is assured the equalization of mass powers. Facility Security Due to its serious consequences, in the design of electrical installations the protection against overloads and short circuits is assured. Thermal-Magnetic Breakers are installed (automatic cutting devices) at the origin of the circuits, ensuring the protection against these two phenomena and that the circuits do not work for long periods in over load conditions (avoiding overheating) and that short circuits are eliminated before the thermal fatigue time of conductors (avoiding damage to the insulation and changes in the properties of conductor). Interior Lighting The facilities are designed according to the characteristics of space, ensuring high levels of energy efficiency and visual comfort. The compact fluorescent lamps with integrated electronic ballast (energy saving lamps), used in kiosks and terraces, ensure an efficient interior lighting. CFLs advantages: - Low energy consumption - Good color rendering index (CRI> 85) - High average length of life (6000h) - Several color temperatures available (2700K to 6500K, from warm white to cool white) - Elimination of flicker effect (causing eye strain)
Public Lighting The main objective is to ensure the safety of users of outdoor public spaces (gardens, footpaths, urban roads, high ways) by the implementation of lighting systems that provide light levels suitable for the space to be illuminated (EN 13 201). The lighting poles produced by Larus combine an attractive design with good quality of light. The light quality varies depending on the lighting source used, being constrained by the color temperature and by the color rendering index (CRI) provided. In order to obtain a high quality of light, Larus uses metal iodide lamps and, more recently, LED light fixtures (light emitting diode). Characteristics of metal iodide lamps: - Good color rendering index (CRI> 80) - Color Temperature (2800K, warm white) - Average length of life (6000h) Characteristics of LED light fixtures: - Good color rendering index (CRI> 75) - Color Temperature (5300K, cool white) - Average length of life (60000h, the highest among all sources of light) - Low energy consumption Autonomous lighting columns (not connected to the mains electricity system): The development of LED and Photovoltaic technology, enables the design of autonomous lighting poles, as is the case of Larus Solar Pole. Such lighting poles produce electricity during the day through an integrated photovoltaic generator, which is stored in a battery bank and used later in the night period to feed the lamp. This way, it is possible to remove the energy consumption from the mains and to significantly reduce the manpower, cost and assembly time of the lighting poles, since it is not necessary to install electrical feeding circuits, making the opening of ditches unnecessary.
